An inpainting method via sparse representation based on a new phaseless quality metric is presented in this paper. Since power spectra, phaseless features, of local regions within images enable more successful representation of their texture characteristics compared to their pixel values, a new quality metric based on these phaseless features is newly derived for image representation. Specifically, the proposed method enables spare representation of target signals, i.e., target patches, including missing intensities by monitoring errors converged by phase retrieval as the novel phaseless quality metric. This is the main contribution of our study. In this approach, the phase retrieval algorithm used in our method has the following two important roles: (1) derivation of the new quality metric that can be derived even for images including missing intensities and (2) conversion of phaseless features, i.e., power spectra, to pixel values, i.e., intensities. Therefore, the above novel approach solves the existing problem of not being able to use better features or better quality metrics for inpainting. Results of experiments showed that the proposed method using sparse representation based on the new phaseless quality metric outperforms previously reported methods that directly use pixel values for inpainting.

Generalized approximate message passing (GAMP) can be applied to compressive phase retrieval (CPR) with excellent phase-transition behavior. In this paper, we introduced the cartoon-texture model into the denoising-based phase retrieval GAMP(D-prGAMP), and proposed a cartoon-texture model based D-prGAMP (C-T D-prGAMP) algorithm. Then, based on experiments and analyses on the variations of the performance of D-PrGAMP algorithms with iterations, we proposed a 2-stage D-prGAMP algorithm, which makes tradeoffs between the C-T D-prGAMP algorithm and general D-prGAMP algorithms. Finally, facing the non-convergence issues of D-prGAMP, we incorporated adaptive damping to 2-stage D-prGAMP, and proposed the adaptively damped 2-stage D-prGAMP (2-stage ADD-prGAMP) algorithm. Simulation results show that, runtime of 2-stage D-prGAMP is relatively equivalent to that of BM3D-prGAMP, but 2-stage D-prGAMP can achieve higher image reconstruction quality than BM3D-prGAMP. 2-stage ADD-prGAMP spends more reconstruction time than 2-stage D-prGAMP and BM3D-prGAMP. But, 2-stage ADD-prGAMP can achieve PSNRs 0.2∼3dB higher than those of 2-stage D-prGAMP and 0.3∼3.1dB higher than those of BM3D-prGAMP.

Radar Cross Section (RCS) can be obtained from near-field data by using near-field to far-field RCS transformation methods. Phase errors in near-field data cause the degradation of the prediction accuracy. In order to overcome the difficulty, we propose the far-field RCS prediction method from one-dimensional intensity data in near-field. The proposed method is derived by extending the phase retrieval method based on the Gerchberg-Saxton algorithm with the use of the relational expression between near-fields and scattering coefficients. The far-field RCS can be predicted from the intensity data of scattered fields measured at two different ranges. The far-field RCS predicted by the proposed method approximately coincides with the computed one. The proposed method also has significant advantages of simple and efficient algorithm. The proposed method is valuable from a practical point of view.

A phase-retrieval method is applied to the quasioptical feed system of the offset Cassegrain antenna of the Superconducting Submillimeter-Wave Limb-Emission Sounder (JEM/SMILES) to be aboard the International Space Station for evaluating the beam alignment by estimating the phase pattern from the beam amplitude pattern measurements. As the result, the application of the phase retrieval method is demonstrated to be effective for measuring and evaluating the quasioptical antenna feed system. It is also demonstrated that the far-field radiation pattern of the antenna main reflector can be estimated from the phase-retrieved beam pattern of the feed system.

A new phase retrieval method using an active contour model (snake) for image reconstruction is proposed. The proposed method reconstructs a target image by retrieving the phase from the magnitude of its Fourier transform and the measured area of the image. In general, the measured area is different from the true area where the target image exists. Thus a snake, which can extract the shape of the target image, is utilized to renew the measured area. By processing this renewal iteratively, the area obtained by the snake converges to the true area and as a result the proposed method can accurately reconstruct a target image even when the measured area is different from the true area. Experimental results show the effectiveness of the proposed method.
