  • An Academic Presentation Support System Utilizing Structural Elements Open Access

    In academic presentation, the structure design of presentation is critical for making the presentation logical and understandable. However, it is difficult for novice researchers to construct required academic presentation structure due to the flexibility in structure creation. To help novice researchers revise and improve their presentation structure, we propose an academic presentation structure modification support system based on structural elements of the presentation slides. In the proposed system, we build a presentation structural elements model (PSEM) that represents the essential structural elements and their relations to clarify the ideal structure of academic presentation. Based on the PSEM, we also designed two evaluation indices to evaluate the academic presentation structure. To evaluate the proposed system with real-world data, we construct a web application that generates evaluation and feedback to academic presentation slides. The experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed system.

  • Assessment System of Presentation Slide Design Using Visual and Structural Features

    Developing well-designed presentation slides is challenging for many people, especially novices. The ability to build high quality slideshows is becoming more important in society. In this study, a neural network was used to identify novice vs. well-designed presentation slides based on visual and structural features. For such a purpose, a dataset containing 1,080 slide pairs was newly constructed. One of each pair was created by a novice, and the other was the improved one by the same person according to the experts' advice. Ten checkpoints frequently pointed out by professional consultants were extracted and set as prediction targets. The intrinsic problem was that the label distribution was imbalanced, because only a part of the samples had corresponding design problems. Therefore, re-sampling methods for addressing class imbalance were applied to improve the accuracy of the proposed model. Furthermore, we combined the target task with an assistant task for transfer and multi-task learning, which helped the proposed model achieve better performance. After the optimal settings were used for each checkpoint, the average accuracy of the proposed model rose up to 81.79%. With the advice provided by our assessment system, the novices significantly improved their slide design.

    Presentation slide composition is an important job for knowledge workers. Instead of starting from scratch, users tend to make new presentation slides by reusing existing ones. A primary challenge in slide reuse is to select desired materials from a collection of existing slides. The state-of-the-art solution utilizes texts and images in slides as well as file names to help users to retrieve the materials they want. However, it only allows users to choose an entire slide as a query but does not support the search for a single element such as a few keywords, a sentence, an image, or a diagram. In this paper, we investigate content-based search for a variety of elements in presentation slides. Users may freely choose a slide element as a query. We propose different query processing methods to deal with various types of queries and improve the search efficiency. A system with a user-friendly interface is designed, based on which experiments are performed to evaluate the effectiveness and the efficiency of the proposed methods.

  • UPRISE: Unified Presentation Slide Retrieval by Impression Search Engine

    A combination of slides used in a presentation and a video recording of the circumstances of the presentation are quite useful for many applications, such as e-learning. However, to create new content from these with current authoring tools requires considerable effort for the author and the products have reduced flexibility. In this paper, we propose the preparation of a unifying function without creating new content manually. We also propose a new approach to search unified presentation manuscripts for slides matched with given keywords by considering the features peculiar to the presentation slides. We propose impression indicators to express how well a slide matches the given keywords. We also propose a system for retrieving a sequence of desired presentation slides from archives of the combined slides and video. We named the system Unified Presentation Slide Retrieval by Impression Search Engine or UPRISE. We describe the system configuration of UPRISE and the experimentation undertaken to evaluate the effect of the proposed indicators and to compare the results with those of the traditional tf.idf retrieval method.
