  • Algorithms for Continuous Allocation of Frequency and Time Slots to Multiple GES's in Non-GEOS

    FDMA/TDMA non-geostationary earth orbit satellite systems (Non-GEOS) generally require a pre-planned pool of radio resource, i.e., frequency and time slot plan (FTSP), for each gateway earth station (GES) prior to the real-time channel assignment by the multiple GES's sharing the resources harmoniously. The time-variant nature of those systems implies that a dynamic FTSP planning method is crucial to the operation to cope with the time-variant traffic demand and the inter-beam interference condition. This paper proposes and compares three algorithms (Serial-numbering, DP-based, and Greedy algorithms) mixed with two strategies (concentrated- and spread-types) for the resource allocation. The numerical evaluation demonstrates that Greedy algorithm with the spread-type strategy is very effective and promising with feasible calculation time for the FTSP generation.

  • A Call Admission Control Scheme for Multi-Rate Traffic Based on Total Received Power

    In this paper, CAC (Call Admission Control) algorithms where decisions are based on total received power for the reverse link in CDMA systems with multiple types of services are proposed. The proposed CAC schemes have advantages in that they have control over the cell load dynamically and guarantee the required SIR, that is, QoS (quality of service). The optimal ratio of required transmission power that achieves the maximum capacity is derived for evaluating the cell load and SIR (signal to interference ratio) reflected in total received power at base stations. Allocation of different thresholds can be made for different services which can be regarded as priority based schemes. Two types of services, voice and data, are considered and the maximum throughput is obtained when threshold values are the same. In addition, the transmitter removal scheme is adopted that eliminates calls when the system does not meet the required SIR. Simulation results are provided to evaluate the performance.

  • Proposal and Performance of Flow and Radio Resource Control Schemes for ABR Service in Wireless ATM

    This paper proposes radio resource control scheme for ABR service that execute flow-control on the transmission rate and assignable bandwidth according to the congestion conditions in both wireless and wired networks. The proposed scheme is useful in improving frequency utilization and meeting the QoS requirements. There are two methods to realize the proposed scheme: explicit rate control (ERC) and binary control (BC). We estimate the performance of the proposed scheme by simulation in comparison with a scheme without flow control in a wireless network under the conditions of a finite buffer, wired network congestion, and RM-cell errors. Consequently, we confirm that the proposed scheme is more effective than the scheme without flow-control under all service conditions. In addition, we clarify that both ERC and BC are effective under the conditions of a finite buffer, wired network congestion, and RM-cell errors.

    This paper is concerned with radio resource allocation in multiple-chip-rate (MCR) DS/CDMA systems accommodating multimedia services with different information rates and quality requirements. Considering both power spectral density (PSD) over a radio frequency (RF) band and the effect of RF input filtering on the receiver in MCR-DS/CDMA systems, criteria for capacity estimation are presented and the characteristics of co-channel interference between subsystems are investigated. System performance in MCR-DS/CDMA systems is strongly affected by radio resource assignment. A minimum power-increment-based resource assignment scheme for an efficient resource assignment scheme is proposed herein. The performance of this scheme is compared with that of a random-based resource assignment scheme in terms of blocking probability and normalized throughput. The minimum power-increment-based resource assignment scheme yields a better performance than the random-based resource assignment scheme for multimedia services.

  • Dynamic Scheduling for GSM Data Services

    A new GSM data protocol called high speed circuit switched data (HSCSD) have been developed by European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) for high speed file transfer and mobile video applications. HSCSD increases data rate by using multiple TDMA time slots (up to 8) instead of one time slot in the current GSM implementation. The problem of multiple time slot assignment is that blocking rate of the system will increase. This problem can be solved by flexible resource assignment where the service specifies the maximum and the minimum capacity. Based on the current available capacity of a base station, a user will be assigned any rate between the maximum and the minimum capacities. This article describes HSCSD protocol and presents four radio resource allocation strategies for HSCSD: always allocates maximum, always allocates minimum, allocates maximum unless available resources are not enough, and allocates resources according to the current blocking statistics of the base station. A simulation model is proposed to investigate the performance of these algorithms. The blocking probability, the call completion probability, and the quality of service are used to evaluate the effects of algorithms in different system behaviors.
