  • Polymeric Waveguide Optical Switch Using Rotary Drive Mechanism

    We propose a polymeric waveguide optical switch using a novel drive mechanism. The switch uses a flexible polymeric waveguide film where trenches are formed at cross-points of the waveguides. Light passes through the trench while it is closed. When the trench opens, light path changes by total internal reflection between the air gap and the polymeric waveguide. Therefore, we can control light paths by changing the trench state between closed and open one. In order to realize this, a rotating arm is inserted near the trench. As rotational force transfers to the trench through the arm and the film, the trench switches from closed to open state and vice versa. We investigated this rotary drive mechanism by three-dimensional (3D) structural analysis, designed the optical switch, and experimentally demonstrated the switching operation.

    Among various characters invented by the human being ,Kanji (Chinese character) is outstanding in its diversity and complexity, in contrast to Roman alphanumerics. So machine recognition of handwritten characters requires particular technics. This paper concerns commercially available optical character readers (OCRs) and the recognition techniques using therein. Methods of character recognition is classified the pattern types and the method of extracting features, to discuss the present states of the character recognition. In regard to the structural analysis, the proposed techniques are classified and discussed in accordance with the extraction method of line segment and axial correlation. Finally, various techniques are compared with one another by using a common database, so as to understand the present states of character recognition and to discuss the technical trends.

    Scientific database systems for the analysis of genes and proteins are becoming very important these days. We have developed a deductive database system PACADE for analyzing the three dimensional and secondary structures of proteins. In this paper, we describe the statistical data classification component of PACADE. We implemented the component for cluster analysis and discrimination analysis. In addition, we enhanced the aggregation function in order to calculate the characteristic values which are useful for data classification. By using the cluster analysis function, the proteins are thereby classified into different types of structural characteristics. The results of these structural analysis experiments are also described in this paper.

  • One Dimensional-Two Dimensional Dynamic Programming Matching Algorithm for Character Recognition

    Dynamic programming based one dimensional-two dimensional adaptive pattern matching methods were investigated. In these methods, the reference pattern is represented as a sequence of directional vectors and the input pattern as two dimensional dot pattern. The input pattern needs no preskeletization or local feature analysis, and thus stroke order free top-down pattern matching is carried out. As the starting point, Rubber String Matching algorithm using fixed direction vectors was newly investigated. At latter stages, the reference pattern vectors were permitted some freedom in their directions to cope with abrupt aberrations in input pattern line segments, improving the flexibility of matching. Two cases were considered, allowing 45and approximately 20deviations from the vector directions. The 20version gave the best recognition score.
