Abstract: The feasibility of a 1600 mechanical optical switch is demonstrated. The maximum insertion loss is 0.2 dB and the loss variation throughout 500 switching cycles is less than 0.1 dB for both multimode and single-mode fibers at wavelengths of 0.85, 1.3, and 1.53 µm. The maximum switching time is 3.4 seconds.
