This paper addresses the variation of the attenuation characteristics of the Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) in a lossy medium as a function of the distance between an antenna and the medium with different EM-source sizes. Analysis and measurements were performed using a dipole antenna at 900 MHz and a COST244 cubic phantom. From this, an empirical equation has been derived, representing the attenuation characteristics of the SAR. The equation takes into consideration an energy loss due to the spatial spread of electromagnetic waves. In the case where an antenna is placed more than λ/2π away from the medium, the attenuation characteristics of the SAR are those obtained from plane waves in the lossy medium. In the case where a half-wavelength dipole antenna is located close to the medium, at a distance of less than λ/2π, the attenuation characteristics of the SAR are calculated from an equation that includes a loss caused by the spread of energy as a cylindrical wave. Moreover, when the length of antenna is short, it is found that a spatial attenuation factor appropriate to a spherical wave should be taken into account.

We investigated the radio propagation characteristics for line-of-sight (LOS) inter-vehicle communication (IVC) at 60 GHz on an actual road with an undulating surface. Radio propagation tests between two moving vehicles were carried out on a test course. From this, it was found that the measured received power on the actual road and the results calculated for a flat road approximately follow logarithmic normal distributions. To investigate this phenomenon in detail, a propagation test between two stationary vehicles on a road was performed. Furthermore, calculations using geometrical optics taking road undulation into consideration demonstrated that undulation in the road can cause variations in the received power that follow a logarithmic normal distribution. Finally, the received power for moving vehicles on an undulating road was calculated using the model.

A low-profile bi-directional cavity antenna has been developed for the IMT-2000 indoor base stations. The geometrical relationships required for the design of an antenna with broadband impedance characteristics, which are obtained as a superposition of two resonant modes (M-antenna + metal case), are presented. The approximate equations describing the resonant frequencies associated with the two resonant modes are derived. By using the equations, a cavity antenna with dimensions of 120 mm 120 mm 12 mm and a fractional bandwidth of 18.3% (VSWR <2) that meets the IMT-2000 specification can be designed successfully. The proposed design procedure of the antenna is confirmed by the measurements.

A path loss prediction formula for IoT (Internet of Things) wireless communication close to ceiling beams in the 920MHz band is presented. In first step of our investigation, we conduct simulations using the FDTD (Finite Difference Time Domain) method and propagation tests close to a beam on the ceiling of a concrete building. In the second step, we derive a path loss prediction formula from the simulation results by using the FDTD method, by dividing into three regions of LoS (line-of-sight) situation, situation in the vicinity of the beam, and NLoS (non-line-of-sight) situation, depending on the positional relationship between the beam and transmitter (Tx) and receiver (Rx) antennas. For each condition, the prediction formula is expressed by a relatively simple form as a function of height of the antennas with respect to the beam bottom. Thus, the prediction formula is very useful for the wireless site planning for the IoT wireless devices set close to concrete beam ceiling.

This paper presents an investigation of radio-wave propagation characteristics in the 5 GHz band in a residential two-story house. We investigated the 3-D angular spectra of incident waves when a transmitter and a receiver were situated on the first and second floors, respectively. First of all, correlation in the measured "home environment" containing furniture such as beds, a sofa and tables was determined to confirm a quasi-static environment. Then, 3-D angular spectra measurements were performed by using an eight-element Yagi-Uda antenna as a receiving antenna. Furthermore, the 4-by-4 MIMO channel capacity at each elevation angle was estimated by using elevation angular spectra and the propagation characteristics between the first and second floors were evaluated. The results indicated that the channel capacity in the elevation direction was strongly influenced by the direction of the transmitting antenna.

This paper presents a spatial fading emulator for evaluating handset MIMO antennas in a cluster environment. The proposed emulator is based on Clarke's model and has the ability to control RF signals directly in spatial domain to generate an accurate radio propagation channel model, which includes both uniform and non-uniform angular power spectra (APS) in the horizontal plane. Characteristics of a propagation channel such as fading correlations, eigenvalues and MIMO channel capacities of handset antennas located in the vicinity of the emulator's ring can be evaluated. The measured results show that the fading emulator with 31 antenna probes is sufficient to evaluate fading correlation and MIMO channel capacity of handset antenna in the case of a narrow APS with the standard deviation of more than 20 degrees.

A number of mobile hosts might be densely staying in an area caused by traffic congestions. The greater part of the mobile hosts will require commonly useful data, such as traffic information, parking information and other driving related information in such environment. Simultaneous data transmission broadcasts using a common link are regarded as a suitable means to distribute this location-dependent information. However, there is no guarantee that mobile hosts can finish receiving the information completely within a limited time. In this paper, we propose a data retransmission method for communications between a base station and mobile hosts and a data recovery processing method for use between base stations. The data retransmission method called "TOA" (The Order of Arrival) schedules retransmission data specified in the first NACK request received after retransmission processing. We have proposed "Advanced" Join system in which a base station makes consolidated join requests to a multicast group on behalf of mobile hosts. Applying the TOA method to resending in the Advanced Join system, data-receiving efficiency is higher than with the simple Advanced Join system and the absolute number of completed mobile host data reception is higher. Using the TOA method, even with the base station disposition rate of 50% the number of completed reception is higher than with the Advanced Join system at 80%. The proposed reliable multicasting system to the DSRC-based ITS network can realize an efficient base station arrangement in the ITS network infrastructure and contribute to the deployment of a superior ITS.

We proposed a method for suppressing arc ignition in mechanical contact devices using a transient current switch and a capacitor. We applied the method to conventional reed switches. For the electric circuit analysis, we clarified the momentary voltage-current characteristics at breaking operation of reed switches by FEM analysis. We could also estimate the capacitance of the contact electrodes at the metal bridge rupture by FEM analysis, and would derive the non-arcing condition using SPICE simulation. The suitable capacitor value in the transient current circuit for arc ignition suppression would be depend on the load impedance, the power supply, the time depending contact resistance R(t)s, the contact capacitance, and the minimum arc voltage and current.

This paper proposes a simple learning algorithm that can realize any boolean function using the three-layer binary neural networks. The algorithm has flexible learning functions. 1) moving "core" for the inputs separations,2) "don't care" settings of the separated inputs. The "don't care" inputs do not affect the successive separations. Performing numerical simulations on some typical examples, we have verified that our algorithm can give less number of hidden layer neurons than those by conventional ones.

This paper describes a spatial fading emulator based on Clarke's model that can evaluate spatial correlation characteristics between signals received by handset antennas including human-body effect under emulated multipath propagation environments. The proposed model is composed of scatterers, phase-shifters and attenuators. The scatterers are located at equal intervals on the circumference of a circle. Phase shifters and attenuators in a control circuit are used to control the phase and amplitude of each wave radiated from the scatterers in order to emulate multi-path propagation environments, such as Rayleigh or Nakagami-Rice distribution, to be generated at their center. In this paper, the maximum distance between receiving antennas that could be used to evaluate spatial correlation characteristics between antennas was investigated experimentally. The measurement results show that 15 scatterers with a radius of 1.5 m are sufficient to evaluate spatial correlation characteristics within the branch separation of 1.7 λ when parallel dipole antennas are used as receiving antennas.
