In this letter, we propose a low-complexity sparse channel estimation method for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems. The proposed method uses a discrete Fourier transform (DFT)-based technique for channel estimation and a novel sorted noise space discrimination technique to estimate the channel length and tap positions. Simulation results demonstrate that the reduction in signal space improves the channel estimation performance.

The information of channel impulse response (CIR) length and noise variance play an important role in blind identification and equalization of wireless multipath channels. In orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems, multipath fading channels introduce interference between adjacent symbols which can be prevented by inserting a cyclic prefix (CP) before each symbol. In this letter, we find that the interference power in the cyclic prefix (CP) interval and its variation can be used to estimate the CIR length and noise variance jointly and blindly.

Universal filtered multicarrier (UFMC) systems offer a flexibility of filtering sub-bands with arbitrary bandwidth to suppress out-of-band (OoB) emission, while keeping the orthogonality between subcarriers in one sub-band. Oscillator discrepancies between the transmitter and receiver induce carrier frequency offset (CFO) in practical systems. In this paper, we propose a novel CFO estimation method for UFMC systems that has very low computational complexity and can then be used in practical systems. In order to fully exploit the coherence bandwidth of the channel, the training symbols are designed to have several identical segments in the frequency domain. As a result, the integral part of CFO can be estimated by simply determining the correlation between received signal and the training symbol. Simulation results show that the proposed method can achieve almost the same performance as an existing method and even a better performance in channels that have small decay parameter values. The proposed method can also be used in other multicarrier systems, such as orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM).

In this letter, a joint estimation algorithm of Doppler spread and frequency offset for OFDM systems in Rayleigh fading channels is proposed based on the autocorrelation function between the last part of the received OFDM signal and its copy in guard interval. It is shown by computer simulations that the proposed algorithm performs well for different Doppler spread values and carrier frequency offsets.

In this letter, a novel channel estimation method is proposed for frequency-domain equalization of OFDM systems in fast fading multipath channels. It is shown by computer simulations that the proposed method can not only estimate the channel impulse response (CIR) accurately but also achieve lower BER than conventional method at low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR).

In OFDM systems, the correlation of cyclic prefix (CP) with its corresponding part at the end of the symbol can be used to estimate the maximum Doppler spread. However, the estimation accuracy of this CP based method is seriously affected by the inter-symbol interference (ISI) generated in the multipath channel. In this letter, we propose an enhanced CP based method which is immune to the ISI and can hence obtain an unbiased estimate of the auto-correlation function in multipath channels.

In this letter, we propose a novel sparse channel estimation method for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems. The proposed method uses a discrete Fourier transform (DFT)-based technique for channel estimation and a sorted generalized Akaike information criterion (GAIC) to estimate the channel length and tap positions. Simulation results demonstrate that an improved channel estimation performance is obtained due to the reduction of signal space.

Accurate channel estimation is necessary before we can demodulate orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signals since the radio channel is frequency-selective and time-varying for wideband mobile communication systems. For pilot-symbol-aided channel estimation, pilot sequences are inserted periodically into the data stream enabling coherent detection at receiver. The control signal information can be embedded in pilot sequences and transmitted implicitly in OFDM systems to save the bandwidth. In order to estimate the channel and control signal jointly at the receiver, we propose a novel noise subspace based method in this paper. The proposed method is developed from the DFT-based channel estimator. If the hypothesized sequence coincides with the transmitted pilot sequence, the last part of the channel impulse response (CIR) estimate is only contributed by Gaussian noise and its average power is expected to be the minimum among all possible hypothesized sequences. Simulation results show that the proposed method works well in any of the channels even if integer carrier frequency offset (CFO) is considered.
