This paper investigates an interference mitigation technique for dynamic time division duplex (TDD) based frequency-separated small cell networks in future long term evolution advanced (LTE-A) based wireless access systems. In dynamic TDD, cross-link interference, i.e. evolved node B (eNB)-eNB interference and user equipment (UE)-UE interference, also occur, and eNB-eNB interference in particular significantly degrades the uplink (UL) transmission performance. In order to alleviate the impacts of eNB-eNB interference and to obtain high traffic adaptation gain, we investigate a transmit power control (TPC) based interference mitigation (IM) scheme. In TPC-IM, time-domain subframes are divided into two subframe sets according to whether the cross-link interference can occur or not, and different TPC parameters are applied depending on the type of subframe. To improve of UL signal to interference plus noise power ratio (SINR) in the subframe set with the potential to occur eNB-eNB interference, there are two approaches of UL power boosting and downlink (DL) power reduction. We investigate the adequate combination of these two approaches to avoid an impact of DL performance degradation and increase of UE power consumption. Moreover, we further investigate a combined scheme of the TPC-IM and a cell clustering interference mitigation (CCIM) to avoid the significantly strong cross-link interference from the neighbouring cells. Computer simulation confirms that the proposed TPC-IM scheme can achieve 4.4% and 26.2% gain in the average DL and UL throughputs, respectively, compared to the case without any IM schemes on dynamic TDD. Moreover, when the CCIM is applied to the TPC-IM scheme, 11.6% and 40.3% gain can be achieved in the average DL and UL throughputs, respectively.

This paper proposes a spectrum-overlapped resource management (SORM) technique where each user equipment (UE) can ideally obtain the frequency selection diversity gain under multi-user environments. In the SORM technique for cellular systems, under assumption of adopting a soft canceller with minimum mean square error (SC/MMSE) turbo equalizer, an evolved node B (eNB) accepts overlapped frequency resource allocation. As a result, each UE can use the frequency bins having the highest channel gain. However, the SORM becomes non-orthogonal access when the frequency bins having high channel gain for UEs are partially identical. In this case, the inter-user interference (IUI) caused by overlapping spectra among UEs is eventually canceled out by using the SC/MMSE turbo equalizer. Therefore, SORM can achieve better performance than orthogonal access e.g. FDMA when the IUI is completely canceled. This paper demonstrates that SORM has the potential to improve transmission performance, by extrinsic information transfer (EXIT) analysis. Moreover, this paper evaluates the block error rate (BLER) performance of the SORM and the FDMA. Consequently, this paper shows that the SORM outperforms the FDMA.

This paper proposes a channel estimation technique for the dynamic parameter controlled--orthogonal frequency and time division multiple access (DPC-OF/TDMA) systems studied as one of the candidates of the beyond third generation (B3G) systems. In the proposed scheme, the impulse response, which represents the channel state information (CSI) is estimated using carrier interferometry (CI) which is equivalent to impulse signal transmission. Moreover, because the minimum number of subcarriers allocated to terminals is 64, in order to estimate a CSI with its spreading factor of 64, we employ a code-multiplexed CI signal for a cell search process and a time-domain-multiplexed CI signal for transmit antenna identification. Furthermore, we also propose a flexible CSI estimation scheme that supports two cases: multiple subchannel block assignment and MIMO transmission cases. Computer simulation confirms that the proposed scheme can estimate the CSI with high accuracy.
