We report on a subsystem of electromagnetic wave radiation and propagation estimation using high-Tc superconducting (HTS) receiving filters for S band. The subsystem, comprised of HTS filters, a rubidium standard signal generator (Rb SSG), a global positioning system (GPS) unit, etc., was used to evaluate the electromagnetic-wave (EMW) intensities, frequencies, the frequency interferences and the ground positions where the EM are measured. The developed subsystem showed high frequency selectivity for S band by using the HTS filters. Furthermore, we verified that the subsystem with the HTS filters operated on the moving car.

A method for bandwidth enhancement of radar cross section (RCS) reduction by metasurfaces was studied. Scattering cancellation is one of common methods for reducing RCS of target scatterers. It occurs when the wave scattered by the target scatterer and the wave scattered by the canceling scatterer are the same amplitude and opposite phase. Since bandwidth of scattering cancellation is usually narrow, we proposed the bandwidth enhancement method using metasurfaces, which can control the frequency dependence of the scattering phase. We designed and fabricated a metasurface composed of a patch array on a grounded dielectric substrate. Numerical and experimental evaluations confirmed that the metasurface enhances the bandwidth of 10dB RCS reduction by 52% bandwidth ratio of the metasurface from 34% bandwidth ratio of metallic cancelling scatterers.

The authors propose a single-layer hollow-waveguide 8-way Butler matrix. All components of the Butler matrix are in a single layer which contributes to low-cost fabrication. To reduce the length of the couplers, a step structure is installed in the coupled region. 50% length reduction is obtained in comparison with the conventional design using reflection-suppressing posts in the coupled region. The total size of the matrix is 17.1λg6.0λg. The full structure of the matrix is fabricated by hollow waveguides at 22 GHz band and the total measured loss is only 0.25 dB.

Microwave/millimeter-wave phase and amplitude characteristics of the optically controlled phased array antenna with a different SMF for each antenna feed were measured. Suitable phases for the beam steering can be realized by the adjustment of the LD wavelength independently with multiple SMFs. In addition to the phase, amplitude of each antenna feed can be controlled stably using LD current without phase variation. Furthermore, effectiveness of the calibration method of the phased array using multiple SMFs by LD wavelength adjustment is experimentally verified. Excellent microwave/millimeter-wave phase characteristics using 2- and 3-element optically controlled phased array feed were experimentally demonstrated with calibration of the phases. Phase characteristics of the array using multiple SMFs were also compared with that using a single SMF experimentally.

The authors proposed a switching beam slot array antenna with a 4-way Butler matrix. All are integrated in one substrate with post-wall waveguide techniques. The planar Butler matrix is realized by using short slot directional couplers (cross coupler). Experiments in 26GHz band confirmed the key operation of this antenna; almost identical four beams are switched to cover the total of horizontal 90-degree sector with equal angular spacing.

A post-wall waveguide slot array with a three-way power divider on a single-layer substrate is designed to have a H-plane sectoral beam and an E-plane cosecant pattern with null-filling. Experiments in the 26 GHz band confirmed the sectoral beam with a -3 dB beam width of 117 deg and a ripple width of 2 dB in the sector.

The authors realize a 50% length reduction of short-slot couplers in a post-wall dielectric substrate by two techniques. One is to introduce hollow rectangular holes near the side walls of the coupled region. The difference of phase constant between the TE10 and TE20 propagating modes increases and the required length to realize a desired dividing ratio is reduced. Another is to remove two reflection-suppressing posts in the coupled region. The length of the coupled region is determined to cancel the reflections at both ends of the coupled region. The total length of a 4-way Butler matrix can be reduced to 48% in comparison with the conventional one and the couplers still maintain good dividing characteristics; the dividing ratio of the hybrid is less than 0.1 dB and the isolations of the couplers are more than 20 dB.
