In this paper, we propose a novel placement algorithm for mixed-grained reconfigurable architectures (MGRAs). MGRA consists of coarse-grained and fine-grained clusters, in order to implement a combined digital systems of high-speed data paths with multi-bit operands and random logic circuits for state machines and bit-wise operations. For accelerating simulated annealing based FPGA placement algorithm, range limiter has been proposed to control the distance of two blocks to be interchanged. However, it is not applicable to MGRAs due to the heterogeneous structure of MGRAs. Proposed range limiter using connection bounding box effectively keeps the size of range limiter to encourage moves across fine-grain blocks in non-adjacent clusters. From experimental results, the proposed method achieved 47.8% reduction of cost in the best case compared with conventional methods.

This paper describes the effects of system LSI design with C language-based behavioral synthesis following several trials of design period reduction and quality improvement for a variety of circuit types. The results of these trials are analyzed from the viewpoints of description productivity, verification productivity, reusability and design flexibility as well as hardware and software co-verification. First the C-based design flow proposed by the authors is described, and the design productivity and verification productivity under this design flow is compared to RTL design. The reusability of the behavioral IP core and its efficiency with HW/SW co-verification are also shown using design examples. Next, using the example of an MPEG-4 video decoder design, a typical design process in a C-based design is shown with considerations regarding verification efficiency, reusability of the IP core and HW/SW co-verification. Finally, the authors' perspectives regarding future directions of system LSI design are discussed.

This paper introduces our developed noise robust speech communication techniques and describes its implementation to a smart info-media system, i.e., a small robot. Our designed speech communication system consists of automatic speech detection, recognition, and rejection. By using automatic speech detection and recognition, an observed speech waveform can be recognized without a manual trigger. In addition, using speech rejection, this system only accepts registered speech phrases and rejects any other words. In other words, although an arbitrary input speech waveform can be fed into this system and recognized, the system responds only to the registered speech phrases. The developed noise robust speech processing can reduce various noises in many environments. In addition to the design of noise robust speech recognition, the LSI design of this system has been introduced. By using the design of speech recognition application specific IC (ASIC), we can simultaneously realize low power consumption and real-time processing. This paper describes the LSI architecture of this system and its performances in some field experiments. In terms of current speech recognition accuracy, the system can realize 85-99% under 0-20dB SNR and echo environments.

It is known that the clock-period can be shorter than the maximum of signal-delays between registers if the clock arrival time to each register is properly scheduled. The algorithm to design an optimal clock-schedule was given. In this paper, we propose a clock-tree routing algorithm that realizes a given clock-schedule using the Elmore-delay model. Following the deferred-merge-embedding (DME) framework, the algorithm generates a topology of the clock-tree and simultaneously determines the locations and sizes of intermediate buffers. The experimental results showed that this method constructs a clock-tree with moderate wire length for a random layout of scheduled registers. Notably, the required wire length for a gentle layout of scheduled registers was shown to be almost equal to that of zero-skew clock-trees.

A methodology to automatically convert fixed point data type representations into integer data types for high level synthesis is presented in this work. Our method converts all major C operations using fixed point data types into integer data types, models quantization and overflow modes, type conversion and casting. The conversion rule for each operation is described in detail as well as a regression test environment with 600 test cases to validate the method and to verify the correctness of each conversion compared to the same cases written in SystemC. The test environment converts each test case with fixed point data types into integer data types and synthesizes them with a high level synthesis tool to generate RTL. An RTL simulation is ran and the results in turn compared to the SystemC's OSCI simulation. For all of the 600 test cases the RTL simulation results matched the SystemC results proving that each conversion is accurately modeled. A larger real test case is also presented to validate the conversion method in a complex case.
