  • Video Error Concealment Using Fidelity Tracking

    We propose a method to prevent the degradation of decoded MPEG pictures caused by video transmission over error-prone networks. In this paper, we focus on the error concealment that is processed at the decoder without using any backchannels. Though there have been various approaches to this problem, they generally focus on minimizing the degradation measured frame by frame. Although this frame-level approach is effective in evaluating individual frame quality, in the sense of human perception, the most noticeable feature is the spatio-temporal discontinuity of the image feature in the decoded video image. We propose a novel error concealment algorithm comprising the combination of i) A spatio-temporal error recovery function with low processing cost, ii) A MB-based image fidelity tracking scheme, and iii) An adaptive post-filter using the fidelity information. It is demonstrated by experimental results that the proposed algorithm can significantly reduce the subjective degradation of corrupted MPEG video quality with about 30 % of additional decoding processing power.

  • An Analysis of Optimal Frame Rate in Low Bit Rate Video Coding

    We analyze frame rates in low bit rate video coding and show that an optimal frame rate can be theoretically obtained. In low bit rate video coding the frame rate is usually forced to be decreased for reducing the total amount of coded information. The choice of frame rate, however, has a great effect on the picture quality in a trade-off relation between coded picture quality and motion smoothness. It is known from experience that in order to achieve an optimum balance between these two factors, a frame rate has to be selected which is appropriate for the coding scheme, property of the video sequences and coding bit rate. A theoretical analysis, however, on the existence of an optimal frame rate and how the optimal frame rate would be expressed has not been performed. In this paper, coding distortion measured by mean square error is analyzed by using video signal models such as a rate-distortion function for coded frames and inter-frame correlation coefficients for non-coded frames. Overall picture quality taking account of coded picture quality and motion smoothness simultaneously is expressed as a function of frame rate. This analysis shows that the optimum frame rate can be uniquely specified. The maximum frame rate is optimal when the coding bit rate is higher than a certain value for a given video scene, while a frame rate less than the maximum is optimal otherwise. The result of the theoretical analysis is compared with the results of computer simulation. In addition, the relation between this analysis and a subjective evaluation is described. From both comparisons this theoretical analysis can be justified as an effective scheme to indicate the optimal frame rate, and it shows the possibility of improving picture quality by selecting frame rate adaptively.

  • A Watermarking Method Retrievable from MPEG Compressed Stream

    A digital watermarking method for moving pictures is proposed in which a watermark can be retrieved from an MPEG bitstream directly. In the proposed method, the watermark is embedded in multiple frames of an original moving picture, and it is detected statistically using multiple frames. Embedding is based on the modification of DCT coefficients that are in the chosen pixel blocks in each video frame. These pixel blocks are chosen differently per video frame in order to avoid regularity and periodicity. The features of the proposed method are that it does not need the original picture nor MPEG decoding processing. The proposed method is evaluated through various attacks including MPEG encoding and StirMark tools. It is shown that the watermark can survive MPEG encoding and frequency domain attacks. The reliability of watermark retrieval is also discussed in terms of statistical test.

    This paper proposes a novel approach of constructing statistical preference models for context-aware personalized applications such as recommender systems. In constructing context-aware statistical preference models, one of the most important but difficult problems is acquiring a large amount of training data in various contexts/situations. In particular, some situations require a heavy workload to set them up or to collect subjects capable of answering the inquiries under those situations. Because of this difficulty, it is usually done to simply collect a small amount of data in a real situation, or to collect a large amount of data in a supposed situation, i.e., a situation that the subject pretends that he is in the specific situation to answer inquiries. However, both approaches have problems. As for the former approach, the performance of the constructed preference model is likely to be poor because the amount of data is small. For the latter approach, the data acquired in the supposed situation may differ from that acquired in the real situation. Nevertheless, the difference has not been taken seriously in existing researches. In this paper we propose methods of obtaining a better preference model by integrating a small amount of real situation data with a large amount of supposed situation data. The methods are evaluated using data regarding food preferences. The experimental results show that the precision of the preference model can be improved significantly.

  • Light Weight MP3 Watermarking Method for Mobile Terminals

    This paper proposes a novel MP3 watermarking method which is applicable to a mobile terminal with limited computational resources. Considering that in most cases the embedded information is copyright information or metadata, which should be extracted before playing back audio contents, the watermark detection process should be executed at high speed. However, when conventional methods are used with a mobile terminal, it takes a considerable amount of time to detect a digital watermark. This paper focuses on scalefactor manipulation to enable high speed watermark embedding/detection for MP3 audio and also proposes the manipulation method which minimizes audio quality degradation adaptively. Evaluation tests showed that the proposed method is capable of embedding 3 bits/frame information without degrading audio quality and detecting it at very high speed. Finally, this paper describes application examples for authentication with a digital signature.

    This paper presents a novel data transmission protocol "SVFTP," which enables high-speed and error-free video data transmission over IP networks. A video transmission system based on SVFTP is also presented. While conventional protocols are designed for file transmission, SVFTP focuses on video data as a continuous media. In order to fit a flexible video transmission system, SVFTP achieves higher throughput on the long distance link as well as transmission interruption/resumption and progressive download and play back. In addition, a rate shaping mechanism for SVFTP is introduced in order to control greediness and burst traffic of multiple-TCP sessions. Laboratory and field transmission experiments show that SVFTP achieves high performance and functionality.
