Trouble management is a key function in solving the problems and maintaining the high communications capability of a network when communication service network users encounter problems in the quality of services [1]. This paper proposes technologies and architecture for an intelligent management system to achieve advanced service/network trouble management. The system generates operation scenarios to find a cause to solve a reported trouble, executes them, and modifies them according to operation circumstance changes. In the scenario execution process, fault propagation simulation is used to isolate a fault in necessary cases. The evaluation of the system applied to the ISDN services shows that the proposed system can achieve high-speed, precise trouble management by the integrated cooperative work of a human (operator) and a machine (operation system).
In clad contacts of bonded dissimilar metals used in relays and switches, the bonding state affects the switching performance of those devices. Examining the bonding state and analyzing the relationship between the bonding state and the causes of malfunction, such as welding of the contact, leads to improvement in reliability of electromechanical devices. In this experiment we examined, with an ultrasonic microscope, the bonding state in riveted clad contacts which had been subjected to load-breaks of in-rush current, and were able to demonstrate the causal relation of the bonding state with malfunctions of the contacts. The use of the ultrasonic microscope made it possible to perform a hitherto difficult detailed analysis of the bonding state of clad contacts. It was also confirmed that this was an extremely effective method for studying the relationship with switching performance.
In this paper, we present a unified model for dialogue understanding involving various sorts of ambiguities, such as lexical, syntactic, semantic, and plan ambiguities. This model is able to estimate and revise the most preferable interpretation of utterances as a dialogue progresses. The model's features successfully capture the dynamic nature of dialogue management. The model consists of two main portions: (1) an extension of first-order logic for maintaining multiple interpretations of ambiguous utterances in a dialogue; (2) a device which estimates and revises the most preferable interpretation from among these multiple interpretations. Since the model is logic-based, it provides a good basis for formulating a rational justification of its current interpretation, which is one of the most desirable aspects in generating helpful responses. These features (contained in our model) are extremely useful for interactive dialogue management.

A new system of measuring the thickness of thin filn or paper using 40 kHz ultrasonic wave in air is described. The thickness of samples measured is smaller by a factor of sevreal hundreds than the wavelength of sound. Experinents with polymer and metal films and paper are described to demonstrate the measurement possibilities.

We have calssified parenchymal echo patterns of cirrhotic liver into four types, according to the size of hypoechoic nodular lesions. Neural network technique has been applied to the characterization of hepatic parenchymal diseases in ultrasonic B-scan texture. We employed a multi-layer feedforward neural network utilizing the back-propagation algorithm. We carried out four kinds of pre-processings for liver parenchymal pattern in the images. We describe the examination of each performance by these pre-processing techniques. We show four results using (1) only magnitudes of FFT pre-processing, (2) both magnitudes and phase angles, (3) data normalized by the maximum value in the dataset, and (4) data normalized by variance of the dataset. Among the 4 pre-processing data treatments studied, the process combining FFT phase angles and magnitudes of FFT is found to be the most efficient.

Reflection mode diffraction tomography is expected to reconstruct a higher resolution image than transmission mode. Its image reconstruction problem, however, in the many cases of practical uses becomes ill-posed one. In this paper, a new reconstruction method of limited angle reflection mode diffraction tomography using maximum entropy method is proposed. Results of simulation showed that the method was able to reconstruct the better quality images than IR method poposed by Kak, et al.
In this paper, we propose a fuzzy Petri net model for a rule-based decision making system which contains uncertain conditions and vague rules. Using the transformation method introduced in the paper, one can obtain the fuzzy Petri net of the rule-based system. Since the fuzzy Petri net can be represented by some matrices, the algebraic form of a state equation of the fuzzy Petri net is systematically derived. Both forward and backward reasoning are performed by using the state equations. Since the proposed reasoning methods require only simple arithmetic operations under a parallel rule firing scheme, it is possible to perform real-time decision making with applications to control systems and diagnostic systems. The methodology presented is also applicable to classical (nonfuzzy) knowledge base systems if the nonfuzzy system is considered as a special case of a fuzzy system with truth values being equal to the extreme values only. Finally, an illustrative example of a rule-based decision making system is given for automobile engine diagnosis.

We present a navigation system using ultrasonic sensors for unknown and dynamic indoor environments. To achieve the robustness and flexibility of the mobile robot, we develop a behavior-based system architecture, consisting of multi-layered behaviors. Basic behaviors required for the navigation of a mobile robot, such as, avoiding obstacles, moving towards free space, and following targets, are redundantly developed as agents and combined in a behavior-based system architecture. An extended potential filed method is developed to produce the appropriate velocity and steering commands for the behaviors of the robot. We demonstrate the capabilities of our system through real world experiments in unstructured dynamic office environments using an indoor mobile robot.

This paper describes the integration of a qualitative method and a quantitative method by Bottleneck Diagnosis/Improvement Expert Systems for Synchronized queueing network (BDES-S and BIES-S). On the basis of qualitative reasoning, BDES-S can carry out parameter tuning in order to diagnose and improve bottlenecks of synchronized queueing networks. BDES-S can produce several alternative qualitative improvement plans for one bottleneck server. BIES-S can produce quantitative improvement equations for each qualitative improvement plan. Our method using BDES-S and BIES-S can integrate both quantitative and qualitative methods for parameter tuning on complicated queueing synchronized networks.

The meaning of analogical reasoning in locally stratified logic programs are described by generalized stable model (GSM) semantics. Although studies on the theoretical aspects of analogical reasoning have recently been on the increase, there have been few attempts to give declarative semantics for analogical reasoning. This paper takes notice of the fact that GSM semantics gives meaning to the effect that the negated predicates represent exceptional cases. We define predicates that denote unusual cases regarding analogical reasoning; for example, ab(x)p(x)g(x), where p(s), q(s), p(t) are given. We also add rules with negated occurrences of such predicates into the original program. In this way, analogical models for original programs are given in the form of GSMs of extended programs. A proof procedure for this semantics is presented. The main objective of this paper is not to construct a practical analogical reasoning system, but rather to present a framework for analyzing characteristics of analogical reasoning.
This paper deals with the problem of translating Japanese adnominal particles into English according to the idea of Example-Based Machine Translation (EBMT) proposed by Nagao. Japanese adnominal particles are important because: (1) they are frequent function words; (2) to translate them into English is difficult because their translations are diversified; (3) EBMT's effectiveness for adnominal particles suggests that EBMT is effective for other function words, e. g., prepositions of European languages. In EBMT, (1) a database which consists of examples (pairs of a source language expression and its target language translation) is prepared as knowledge for translation; (2) an example whose source expression is similar to the input phrase or sentence is retrieved from the example database; (3) by replacements of corresponding words in the target expression of the retrieved example, the translation is obtained. The similarity in EBMT is computed by the summation of the distance between words multiplied by the weight of each word. The authors' method differs from preceding research in two important points: (1) the authors utilize a general thesaurus to compute the distance between words; (2) the authors propose a weight which changes for every input. The feasibility of our approach has been proven through experiments concerning success rate.
