This letter presents a successive partial interference cancellation (SPIC) scheme for full-duplex (FD) and multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) relaying system. The proposed scheme coordinates the cancellation for the self-interference and inter-stream interference. The objective for the coordination focuses on simultaneously minimizing the two interferences. Simulation results under the measured data show that the system with the proposed scheme can achieve a significant performance gain compared to the conventional FD and half-duplex (HD) systems.

In this paper, we consider a two-hop relay network with a decode-and-forward (DF) relaying protocol where a multi-input/multi-output (MIMO) relay station (RS) is deployed in a cell edge to extend cell coverage of a base station (BS). We propose two MIMO relaying schemes to improve the quality of the BS-RS link, which is a key to improve data rates in the DF relaying: 1) spatial multiplexed MIMO antenna relaying (SM-MAR) with a uniform channel decomposition (UCD) precoder, and 2) MIMO relaying with section diversity (SD-MAR). In the SM-MAR, we greatly simplify user allocation by the UCD precoder and propose a sophisticated rate maximization technique to resolve the non-convexity of rate maximization problems. Through simulations, we show that the proposed UCD based power allocation exhibits up to two times higher achievable throughput than other techniques. In addition, the proposed SD-MAR supports the BS with a single transmit antenna and increases the signal quality of the BS-RS link with the selection diversity at the RS, which is much simpler to be implemented. For the SD-MAR, we derive a closed form expression for the achievable throughput and show that the selection diversity plays more important role on the achievable throughput than the multiuser diversity.

This paper presents a joint linear processing scheme for two-hop and half-duplex distributed amplify-and-forward (AF) relaying networks with one source, one destination and multiple relays, each having multiple antennas. By using the minimum mean-square error (MMSE) criterion and the Wiener filter principle, the joint relay and destination design with perfect channel state information (CSI) is first formulated as an optimization problem with respect to the relay precoding matrix under the constraint of a total relay transmit power. The constrained optimization with an objective to design the relay block-diagonal matrix is then simplified to an equivalent problem with scalar optimization variables. Next, it is revealed that the scalar-version optimization is convex when the total relay power or the second-hop SNR (signal to noise ratio) is above a certain threshold. The underlying optimization problem, which is non-convex in general, is solved by complementary geometric programming (CGP). The proposed joint relay and destination design with perfect CSI is also extended for practical systems where only the channel mean and covariance matrix are available, leading to a robust processing scheme. Finally, Monte Carlo simulations are undertaken to demonstrate the superior MSE (mean-square error) and SER (symbol error rate) performances of the proposed scheme over the existing relaying method in the case of relatively large second-hop SNR.

In this paper, we propose a decentralized strategy to find out the linear precoding matrices for a two-hop multiuser relay communication system. From a game-theoretic perspective, we model the source allocation process as a strategic noncooperative game for fixing relay precoding matrix and the multiuser interference treating as additive colored noise. Alternately, from the global optimization perspective, we prove that the optimum relay precoding matrix follows the transceiver Winner filter structure for giving a set of source transmit matrices. Closed-form solutions are finally obtained by using our proposed joint iterative SMSE algorithm and numerical results are provided to give insights on the proposed algorithms.

This paper designs the closed-form precoding matrices for non-regenerative MIMO relay system with the direct link. A multiple power constrained non-convex optimization problem is formulated by using the minimum-mean-squared error (MMSE) criterion. We decompose the original problem into two sub-problems. The relay transceiver Wiener filter structure is first rigorously derived, then the source transmit and destination receive matrices are jointly designed by solving an equivalent dual problem. Through our proposed joint iterative algorithm, the closed-form solutions can be finally obtained. The effectiveness of our proposed scheme is validated by simulations with comparison to some of the existing schemes.

Setting relays can address the shadowing problem between a transmitter (Tx) and a receiver (Rx). Moreover, the Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) technique has been introduced to improve wireless link capacity. The MIMO technique can be applied in relay network to enhance system performance. However, the efficiency of relaying schemes and relay placement have not been well investigated with experiment-based study. This paper provides a propagation measurement campaign of a MIMO two-hop relay network in 5 GHz band in an L-shaped corridor environment with various relay locations. Furthermore, this paper proposes a Relay Placement Estimation (RPE) scheme to identify the optimum relay location, i.e. the point at which the network performance is highest. Analysis results of channel capacity show that relaying technique is beneficial over direct transmission in strong shadowing environment while it is ineffective in non-shadowing environment. In addition, the optimum relay location estimated with the RPE scheme also agrees with the location where the network achieves the highest performance as identified by network capacity. Finally, the capacity analysis shows that two-way MIMO relay employing network coding has the best performance while cooperative relaying scheme is not effective due to shadowing effect weakening the signal strength of the direct link.

In this letter, we propose an efficient relay antenna selection algorithm for the amplify and forward (AF) two-way multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) relay systems with analogue network coding (ANC). The proposed algorithm greedily selects the additional receive-transmit antenna pair that provides the maximum sum-rate. An iterative computation method is also designed to evaluate the sum-rate efficiently.

This letter addresses linear processing issues for the downlink of closed-loop multi-user non-regenerative MIMO-relay systems with arbitrary number of antennas at each node. First three precoding design schemes at BS are presented. Then given the fixed BS linear processing matrix, we propose a joint iterative linear processing scheme for the relay station and mobile stations, aiming to minimize the total mean squared error (MSE). Finally Simulation results are provided to show the performance gain of joint linear processing at the multi-antenna nodes.

This letter proposes a robust joint linear precoding scheme based on the minimum mean squared error (MMSE) criterion for amplify-and-forward (AF) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) relay broadcast systems with limited feedback, where only the quantized channel direction information (CDI) of the forward channel is available for the base station (BS) and the relay station (RS). The proposed scheme employs an iterative algorithm which alternately optimizes the BS and RS precoders to jointly minimize the expected MSE conditioned on the quantized CDI.

Relay, which promises to enhance the performance of future communication networks, is one of the most promising techniques for IMT-Advanced systems. In this paper, multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) relay channels based on outdoor measurements are investigated. We focus on the link between the base station (BS) and the relay station (RS) as well as the link between the RS and the mobile station (MS). First of all, the channels were measured employing a real-time channel sounder in IMT-Advanced frequency band (2.35 GHz with 50 MHz bandwidth). Then, the parameters of multipath components (MPCs) are extracted utilizing space-alternating generalized expectation algorithm. MPC parameters of the two links are statistically analyzed and compared. The polarization and spatial statistics are gotten. The trends of power azimuth spectrum (PAS) and cross-polarization discrimination (XPD) with the separation between the RS and the MS are investigated. Based on the PAS, the propagation mechanisms of line-of-sight and non-line-of-sight scenarios are analyzed. Furthermore, an approximate closed-form expression of channel correlation is derived. The impacts of PAS and XPD on the channel correlation are studied. Finally, some guidelines for the antenna configurations of the BS, the RS and the MS are presented. The results reveal the different characteristics of relay channels and provide the basis for the practical deployment of relay systems.

The Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) uses autonomous sensor nodes to monitor a field. These sensor nodes sometimes act as relay nodes for each other. In this paper, the performance of the WSN using fixed relay nodes and Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) technology necessary for future wireless communication is evaluated in terms of the channel capacity of the MIMO system and the number of sensor nodes served by the system. Accordingly, we propose an optimum topology for the WSN backbone named Connected Relay Node Double Cover (CRNDC), which can recover from a single fault, the algorithms (exhaustive search and other two approximation methods) to find the optimum distance to place the relay nodes from sink node, and the height of the sink and relay nodes to be placed by using the pathloss model. The performances of different MIMO-WSN configurations over conventional WSN are evaluated, and the direct relationship between relay position and minimum required channel capacity are discovered.

In this paper, the performance of the Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) using fixed relay nodes and Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) technology was evaluated based on the correlated channel capacity of MIMO system and the number of sensor node served by the system. Moreover, the performance evaluation of the proposed algorithm, which is used to find the optimum distance to place the relay nodes from sink node, is done not only with AF relaying and spatial correlation effect, but also with Decode-and-Forward (DF) relaying scheme. The results show that the relay gain (a ratio between the maximum number of sensors satisfying the required channel capacity in 7-cell topology to the number of sensor nodes in sink cell) is affected strongly by the spatial correlation at high required channel capacity but little at low required channel capacity. The results also show that the relay gain can be improved remarkably by using the DF relaying scheme, and that the validity of the proposed algorithm holds for any relaying scheme, spatial correlation effect and different antenna size.
