  • Limiting the Length of BET for Tunnel-Based IP Fast Handover

    Next generation wired/wireless networks will be based on IP technology. In the IP based networks, it is crucially required to support seamless mobility especially for proving real-time services in the mobile environment. The conventional Mobile IP protocols cannot satisfy such seamless mobility requirements for real-time services. Therefore various extensions of Mobile IP are being proposed. In this paper, we propose a new handover scheme to enhance the existing tunnel-based fast handover method, which is a typical Mobile IP extension to support seamless mobility. It is shown that the proposed method reduces the traffic overhead in the networks. It is expected that the proposed method will be particularly useful in the IP-based networks in which there are a number of users simultaneously using the long-lived real-time services, or in the condition that the traffic overhead is considered as a critical performance measure.

    As various mobile communication systems have developed, dramatically integrated wireless network, where users can communicate seamlessly via several wireless access systems, have become expected. At present, there are many studies of integrated wireless network, but no study of a network design method. Therefore, in this paper, we discuss a network design method for integrated wireless networks. Because of the handover procedure, the network design where adjacent base stations are connected to the same router, regardless of radio system type, is simply considered. However, in such a design, where mobile users crowd into a particular area and users' access to the base stations located there increases, the load of these accesses is centralized to the single router. To overcome this problem, we propose a new network design wherein the base stations of heterogeneous wireless communication systems, the service areas of which overlap, are connected to a different router. In the proposed network design, although users' accesses are concentrated on the base stations located in a particular area, users in that area can be assigned bandwidth of several upper links according to the access conditions of the base stations in neighboring areas. Finally, we show the excellent performance of the proposed design by simulation experiments.

    This paper presents some effective methods for improving the performance of a speaker identification system. Based on the multiresolution property of the wavelet transform, the input speech signal is decomposed into various frequency subbands in order not to spread noise distortions over the entire feature space. For capturing the characteristics of the vocal tract, the linear predictive cepstral coefficients (LPCC) of the lower frequency subband for each decomposition process are calculated. In addition, a hard threshold technique for the lower frequency subband in each decomposition process is also applied to eliminate the effect of noise interference. Furthermore, cepstral domain feature vector normalization is applied to all computed features in order to provide similar parameter statistics in all acoustic environments. In order to effectively utilize all these multiband speech features, we propose a modified vector quantization as the identifier. This model uses the multilayer concept to eliminate the interference among the multiband speech features and then uses the principal component analysis (PCA) method to evaluate the codebooks for capturing a more detailed distribution of the speaker's phoneme characteristics. The proposed method is evaluated using the KING speech database for text-independent speaker identification. Experimental results show that the recognition performance of the proposed method is better than those of the vector quantization (VQ) and the Gaussian mixture model (GMM) using full-band LPCC and mel-frequency cepstral coefficients (MFCC) features in both clean and noisy environments. Also, a satisfactory performance can be achieved in low SNR environments.

    In future mobile networks, new technologies will be needed to enable a mobile host to move across heterogeneous wireless access networks without disruption of the connection. In the past, many researchers have studied handover in such IP networks. In almost all cases, special network devices are needed to maintain the host's mobility. Moreover, a host cannot move across heterogeneous wireless access networks without degradation of the goodput for real-time communication, although a mobile host with multiple network interfaces can connect to multiple wireless access networks. For these reasons, we consider that a mobile host needs to manage seamless handover on an end-to-end basis. In this paper, we propose a multi-path transmission algorithm for end-to-end seamless handover. The main purpose of this algorithm is to improve the goodput during handover by sending the same packets along multiple paths, minimizing unnecessary consumption of network resources. We evaluate our algorithm through simulations and show that a mobile host gains a better goodput.

    The Communications Research Laboratory (CRL) started a new project named the New Generation Mobile Network Project in April 2002. The target of this project is the development of new technologies to enable seamless and secure integration of various wireless access networks such as 3rd and 4th generation cellular, wireless LAN, high-speed mobile wireless, wired communications, and broadcasting networks. This paper presents an overview of CRL's new generation mobile communication system that is called The Multimedia Integrated Network by Radio Access Innovation Plus (MIRAI+), as well as details the role of Software Radio Technology (SDR) in MIRAI+.

    This letter addresses the QoS issue of a RSVP flow during handoff events. For the QoS guarantee of real-time applications with RSVP reservation in All-IP wireless networks, mechanisms are required to minimize the resource reservation path changes and the packet loss resulting from handoff events. If the new RSVP reservation is made along the path via a new base station (BS) in advance for soft handoff, on-going RSVP flow session can be kept with the guaranteed QoS. Therefore, we propose a seamless switching scheme of RSVP branch path for soft handoff. We also show that this scheme could provide the QoS guarantee by adaptively adjusting the pilot signal threshold values for soft handoff.

    This paper presents a new class of complex-valued compact-supported orthonormal symmlets. Firstly, some properties of complex-valued compact-supported orthonormal symmlets are investigated, and then it is shown that complex-valued symmlets can be generated by real-valued half-band filters. Therefore, the construction of complex-valued symmlets can be reduced to the design of real-valued half-band filters. Next, a design method of real-valued half-band FIR filters with some flatness requirements is proposed. For the maximally flat half-band filters, a closed-form solution is given. For the filter design with a given degree of flatness, the design problem is formulated in the form of linear system by using the Remez exchange algorithm and considering the given flatness condition. Therefore, a set of filter coefficients can be easily computed by solving a set of linear equations, and the optimal solution is obtained through a few iterations. Finally, some design examples are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

    An HDTV still-picture camera that uses four PAL CCD sensors has been developed for use as a high-speed, high-resolution image reader. The CCD sensors are optically coupled to a single lens by a pyramidal mirror. Each CCD sensor reads a quarter of the image and the four quarter-images are combined into one HDTV picture. Discontinuities at the lines where the four images join can be eliminated by white- and dark-level correction and gamma correction. Moreover, smoothing processing using a weighted-mean method is performed to produce a seamless picture. With this processing the camera can consistently produce seamless pictures.
