  • Fast Spectral BRDF & BTDF Measurements for Characterization of Displays and Components Open Access

    In the present paper we show how to obtain rapidly the spectral BRDF and BTDF of different display components or transparent displays using Fourier optics system under different illumination configurations. Results can be used to simulate the entire structure of a LCD display or to predict transparent display performances under various illuminations.

  • Authorization Conflict Problems in Combining RIF Rules with RDF Data

    Resource Description Framework (RDF) access control suffers from an authorization conflict problem caused by RDF inference. When an access authorization is specified, it can lie in conflict with other access authorizations that have the opposite security sign as a result of RDF inference. In our former study, we analyzed the authorization conflict problem caused by subsumption inference, which is the key inference in RDF. The Rule Interchange Format (RIF) is a Web standard rule language recommended by W3C, and can be combined with RDF data. Therefore, as in RDF inference, an authorization conflict can be caused by RIF inference. In addition, this authorization conflict can arise as a result of the interaction of RIF inference and RDF inference rather than of RIF inference alone. In this paper, we analyze the authorization conflict problem caused by RIF inference and suggest an efficient authorization conflict detection algorithm. The algorithm exploits the graph labeling-based algorithm proposed in our earlier paper. Through experiments, we show that the performance of the graph labeling-based algorithm is outstanding for large RDF data.

    The Semantic Web uses RDF/RDFS, which can enable a machine to understand web data without human interference. But most web data is not available in RDF/RDFS documents because most web data is still stored in databases. It is much more favorable to use stored data in a database to build the Semantic Web. This paper proposes an enhanced relational RDF/RDFS interoperable data model (ER2iDM) and a transformation procedure from relational data model (RDM) to RDF/RDFS based on ER2iDM. The ER2iDM is a data model that plays the role of an inter-mediator between RDM and RDF/RDFS during a transformation procedure. The data and schema information in the database are migrated to the ER2iDM according to the proposed translation procedures without incurring loss of meaning of the entities, relationships, and data. The RDF/RDFS generation tool makes a RDF/RDFS XML document automatically from the ER2iDM. The proposed ER2iDM and transformation procedure provides detailed guidelines for transformation from RDM to RDF/RDFS unlike existing studies; therefore, we can more efficiently build up the Semantic Web using database stored data.

    An expectation for more intelligent Web is recently being reflected through the new research field called Semantic Web. In this paper, related with Semantic Web security, we introduce an RDF triple based access control model having explicit authorization propagation by inheritance and implicit authorization propagation by inference. Especially, we explain an authorization conflict problem between the explicit and the implicit authorization propagation, which is an important concept in access control for Semantic Web. We also propose a novel conflict detection algorithm using graph labeling techniques in order to efficiently find authorization conflicts. Some experimental results show that the proposed detection algorithm has much better performance than the existing detection algorithm when data size and number of specified authorizations become larger.

  • Novel Topic Maps to RDF/RDF Schema Translation Method

    We propose an enhanced method for translating Topic Maps to RDF/RDF Schema, to realize the Semantic Web. A critical issue for the Semantic Web is to efficiently and precisely describe Web information resources, i.e., Web metadata. Two representative standards, Topic Maps and RDF have been used for Web metadata. RDF-based standardization and implementation of the Semantic Web have been actively performed. Since the Semantic Web must accept and understand all Web information resources that are represented with the other methods, Topic Maps-to-RDF translation has become an issue. Even though many Topic Maps to RDF translation methods have been devised, they still have several problems (e.g. semantic loss, complex expression, etc.). Our translation method provides an improved solution to these problems. This method shows lower semantic loss than the previous methods due to extract both explicit semantics and implicit semantics. Compared to the previous methods, our method reduces the encoding complexity of resulting RDF. In addition, in terms of reversibility, the proposed method regenerates all Topic Maps constructs in an original source when is reverse translated.

  • Design of Storage Structure for Path-Based Query on RDF and RDF Schema

    In the Semantic Web, metadata and ontology for representing semantics and conceptual relationships of information resources are essential factors. RDF and RDF Schema are the W3C standard models for describing metadata and ontology. In this paper, we focus on a result of analyzing available query patterns considering both RDF and RDF Schema. And we propose a structure to store and query using path information in graph models of RDF and RDF Schema. The proposed structure supports whole query patterns fairly. We can retrieve entities that are reached from a certain class, property, resource, or literal in RDF and RDF Schema without a loss of performance because of multiple joins with tables. And, through encoding schemes, we determine easily hierarchical relationships between classes or properties.

    We propose a tool to manage several sorts of relationships among RDF (Resource Description Framework) and RDFS (RDF Schema). Our tool consists of three main functions: graphical editing of RDF descriptions, graphical editing of RDFS descriptions, and meta-model management facilities. In this paper, we focus on the meta-model management, a key concept which is defined as the appropriate management of the correspondence between a model and its meta-model: especially, the class and property in the meta-model, and the type of RDF resource and property in the model. The above facilities are implemented based on the plug-in system. We provide basic plug-in modules for checking the consistency of RDFS classes and properties. The prototyping tool, called MR3 (Meta-Model Management based on RDFs Revision Reflection), is implemented by Java language. Through an experiment using MR3, we show how MR3 contributes to the Semantic Web paradigm from the standpoint of RDFs description management.

    A huge amount of information is being accumulated on the Internet as the Internet usage spreads and numbers of Web pages increase. However, it is also becoming very difficult to find required information, even when the information exists. The actual value of the Web is thus much lower than its potential value. In order to solve this problem, technologies which allow machines to handle Web content in an efficient, accurate, and flexible way by using machine-readable metadata are being developed. This paper is a survey of knowledge representation on the Web, and the utilization of metadata and ontology for data integration and information sharing, with a focus on the Semantic Web concept.

  • The Effects of Micro Surface-Morphology on Bidirectional Reflection Distribution Function (BRDF) of Commercially Pure Titanium Sheets

    Bidirectional reflection distribution functions (BRDFs) of commercially pure titanium sheets with three different kinds of surface morphology were measured. Those experimental BRDFs were analyzed by using Phong's reflection model. Topographic measurements of the specimens' surfaces were performed with using a stylus-method. An explicit microfacet model based on topographic data was proposed. With using the explicit microfacet model and geometrical optics the calculated BRDFs were obtained and then compared with the experimental BRDFs. Both of them were in a good agreement. Through this comparison physical meanings of Phong's reflection model were discussed. We concluded that with using the explicit microfacet model it will be possible to calculate the BRDF of the materials' surface in arbitrary illumination conditions and that this modeling will be useful to develop new aesthetic surface appearance in material industries, computer graphics, architectural design and surface science.

  • Estimation of Land Surface Bidirectional Reflectance Distribution Function by Using Airborne POLDER Image Data

    The Bidirectional Reflectance Distribution Function (BRDF) is an intrinsic measurement of directional properties of the earth's surface. However, the estimation of the BRDF requires many remote sensing measurements of a given surface target from different viewing angles. In addition, a good atmospheric correction scheme is a prerequisite for such an attempt. The airborne POLDER sensor measures successively reflected radiation by terrestrial surfaces in a framed image form at different viewing angles during a single airplane pass, like taking snap-shot pictures. A specially improved atmospheric correction algorithm which is applicable to a framed image data by POLDER sensor is presented. The observed reflectance images taken successively by the airborne POLDER at slightly different viewing angles are converted to a series of surface albedo images by applying our atmospheric correction algorithm. Then, the BRDFs for three surface covers, namely, "River Water," "Forest," and "Rice Field," are estimated by using successive albedo images. It is found that the BRDF for "River Water" follows Lambert law at both 550nm and 850nm. It is also found that the BRDFs for "Forest" and "Rice Field" follow Lambert's law at 550nm, but they follow an anisotropic reflection law at 850nm and fitting parameters for their BRDFs are presented.
