  • Importance Sampling for TCM Scheme over Fading Channel

    We propose bit error rate (BER) evaluation methods for a trellis coded modulation (TCM) scheme over a Rayleigh fading channel by using importance sampling (IS). The simulation probability density function for AWGN and Rayleigh fading is separately designed. For efficient simulation of a system model with finite interleaver, frequency of the generation of fading sequences is reduced. The proposed method gives a good BER estimates over a Rayleigh fading channel.

  • Variable Rate Error Correcting Code with Interleavered Puncturing Serially Concatenated Convolutional Codes

    This paper addresses a novel scheme for variable rate error correction coding with interleavered puncturing serially concatenated convolutional code. In order to obtain a variable coding rate, the bits of the outer coder are perforated with a given puncturing pattern, and randomly interleaved. The effect of interleavered puncturing on the overall coding performance is analyzed, and the upper bound to the bit error probability of the proposed coder is derived. Moreover, to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme some simulation results are presented with the iterative decoding procedure, in which the channel models of Rayleigh fading and additive white Gaussian noises are assumed.

  • Packet Error Performance of Hybrid FDMA/CDMA Systems in Frequency Selective Rayleigh Fading

    In this paper, a hybrid FDMA/CDMA system and a wideband CDMA (W-CDMA) system in the frequency selective Rayleigh fading are considered. The bit error rate (BER) and coded symbol error rate performance of a coherent BPSK RAKE receiver under the various number of receiver fingers are derived and evaluated. In addition, a multiple access control (MAC) protocol based on packet-switched network is proposed and computer simulation is performed. Then, the results of performance evaluation are compared. The numerical analysis shows that the performance of the hybrid system is better than that of the W-CDMA in situation when the RAKE receiver complexities are kept constant in both systems. As noted, when each system has as many fingers as paths, the performance of the full-fingered W-CDMA is best. The 2- or 3-subspectrum FCDMA, however, has almost the same performance compared with the full-fingered W-CDMA when we applied the proposed MAC protocol to the system.

    We investigate the relationship between microwave path-loss characteristics and line-of-sight (LOS) blocking in an urban environment with a low base-station antenna using LOS-blocking measurement equipment that we have developed. Changes in path loss, traffic conditions, and LOS-blocking caused by vehicles were measured simultaneously. It was found that path loss exhibits a Rayleigh distribution even in a LOS environment if the amount of traffic is such that LOS- blocking occurs for 80% of the time or more, but the other case path loss exhibits a Nakagami-Rice distribution. It was also found that ratio of coherent wave level to envelope level (c/r) depends heavily on rate of road traffic flow.

    Transmitter power control is an effective scheme to improve the performance of cellular DS/CDMA systems. In the reverse link, pilot symbols are used to assist the estimation of received signal power in order to improve the performance of power control. In this paper, we propose a model for the evaluation of the performance of a power-controlled reverse link CDMA system in the presence of Rayleigh flat fading. The model allows analysis of design parameters such as the number of pilot symbols, the power control updating frequency and the maximum allowable transmitted power. Analysis result shows that when transmitter power control is used, system capacity can be increased by more than 40% for typical normalised Doppler frequency in cellular communications.

    We analyzed the performance of adaptive array antennas with a RAKE receiver by employing a common correlation matrix of the sample matrix inversion (CCM-SMI) algorithm in a multipath Rayleigh fading environment for W-CDMA reverse link. A common correlation matrix is usually used to provide adaptive weights for multiple users and multiple delay paths and can be used in packet communications transmitted using frame units. The proposed CCM-SMI algorithm had a better BER and SINR for lower computational complexity compared with the conventional SMI algorithm, even when using a RAKE receiver in multipath Rayleigh fading environment.

    In this paper, the error performances of several reliability based decoding algorithms over the Rayleigh fading channel with coherent detection are evaluated. The algorithms for which the theoretical bounds are evaluated are the Generalized Minimum Distance (GMD), Chase-type, combined GMD and Chase-type and ordered statistic decodings. All derived bounds are relatively tight and require the same computational effort.

    In the wireless asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) networks, a custom data link control (DLC) layer protocol with stronger error correction ability is needed for mitigating the affect of radio channel errors. This paper applies punctured turbo code schemes to the protection of the header and various payloads in wireless ATM cell, which are realized by the combination of programmable interleaving and puncturing. Their performance is analyzed for Rayleigh fading channel, which shows more significant reduction in cell loss rate (CLR) than the previous systems. Our proposal also provides good balance designs for CLR and the payload bit error rate (BER), and offers potential for future evolutionary improvement of the wireless ATM coding scheme.

    Many experimentally and theoretically based models have been proposed to predict, quantitatively evaluate, and combat the fading phenomenon in mobile communication systems. However, to the best of the authors' knowledge, up to now there is no objective method to determine which is the most suitable distribution to model the fading phenomenon based on experimental data. In this work, the Minimum Description Length (MDL) criterion for model selection is proposed for that purpose. Furthermore, the MDL analysis is performed for some of the most widely used fading models based on measurements taken in a sub-urban environment.

    This paper investigates the asymptotic error rate behaviour for noncoherent OOK signalling scheme in the presence of Nakagami-m fading. A transcendental equation to compute the optimum threshold level is also derived. Comparison on trends in optimum threshold level and its corresponding ratio of the Mark and Space error probabilities between different channels are presented.

    In this paper, we investigate the performance of the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system based on a configuration of pilot symbol arrangement under a time-varying fading channel and verify it by simulation. A particular channel of concern is modeled by a wide-sense stationary uncorrelated scattering (WSSUS) Rayleigh fading process and furthermore, the inter-carrier interference (ICI) caused by the fading process is assumed to be Gaussian noise. The current analysis focuses on the performance limit of the pilot symbol-assisted channel estimation, in which a minimum mean squared error (MMSE) channel estimator is employed to exploit both time- and frequency-domain correlation simultaneously. In particular, the optimum pilot symbol arrangement was investigated for the time-varying fading channel, which has been rarely addressed with any analytical approach in previous research. Although the proposed channel estimation scheme is subject to the intensive processing complexity in the receiver, it has been shown that the better BER performance can be achieved as compared with that of the differential detection scheme and the error floor can be removed.

    A Rayleigh lidar (laser radar) system was developed and is now working well for temperature observations of the middle atmosphere at Poker Flat Research Range near Fairbanks, Alaska (65.1 N, 147.5 W). A comparison of lidar data and balloon sonde data showed good agreement in overlapped altitudes. The atmospheric fluctuations are detected in the temperature profiles obtained by the Rayleigh lidar and these are useful for the study of gravity waves. A Rayleigh Doppler lidar for wind measurements of the middle atmosphere is under the phase of development. The expected accuracy in measurements of horizontal winds up to an altitude of 60 km is smaller than 6 m/s in 2 hours observation. The system will be operated at Poker Flat after the completion of development. The combination of these lidars and radars installed at Poker Flat, give us chances of simultaneous observations of the structure and dynamics of the atmosphere in broad range of altitudes. Here, we give descriptions of the Rayleigh lidar and the Rayleigh Doppler lidar for the observations of the Arctic middle atmosphere at Poker Flat.

    Coding and modulation tradeoffs for limiter-discriminator based CPM transceivers are examined in Rayleigh, fast fading environments. Comparisons are made on the basis of a fixed bandwidth to information rate ratio, so coded schemes and uncoded schemes can be compared fairly. It is shown that using the proper balance of modulation and coding is important to achieve good performance. It is found that combining bandwidth efficient modulation with convolutional coding achieves better performance than trellis coded modulation (TCM). The increase in performance as the code complexity is increased is also found to be larger for convolutional coding than for TCM.

  • Theoretical Analysis on the Performance of Optimal Combining for Multipath Waves Distributed in Spatial and Time Domains

    This paper theoretically analyzed the performance of the RAKE combining (in the time domain), maximal ratio combining (in the spatial domain), and two-dimensional RAKE combining (in the spatial and time domains) techniques for multipath fading environments, where multipath waves are distributed in the spatial and time domains. The analysis was based on a diversity combining technique that employed the eigenvalues of the covariance matrix between branch signals. It was found that the performance of the fading mitigation was normalized by the beamwidth of an array antenna, for various parameters such as the number of antenna elements, angular spread, and angle of arrival.

  • Effect of Imperfect Channel Estimation on the Performance of Pilot Channel-Aided Coherent DS-CDMA System over Rayleigh-Fading Multipath Channel

    This paper presents the bit-error rate (BER) performance of the RAKE receiver over a multipath Rayleigh fading channel. The closed-form BER in the downlink single-cell environment is obtained through the analysis of the imperfect channel estimation. We compute the BER as a function of energy-to-noise ratio per bit including the effect of multiple access interference and multipath interference, with channel and system parameters: number of diversity channels L = 1, 3, 6, 12; Doppler frequency shift with fD T = 0.008333, 0.0167, 0.025; residual carrier frequency offset Δ f = -600 600 Hz; averaging length of the channel estimator Np = 128-1536 chips. This analysis allows predicting the system's performance and helps to optimize the parameter setting for the channel estimation process. We show that even if the optimal system parameters are used, the BER performance results in a minimal 4dB degradation in comparison to the perfect channel estimation. Finally, the theoretical results are verified by using the Monte-Carlo computer simulations.

    In this paper, the bit error rate (BER) of 16 differential amplitude phase shift keying (16DAPSK) modems in future mobile communication system is derived analytically. The channel employed in this paper is the frequency-selective and fast Rayleigh fading channel, corrupted by cochannel interference (CCI) and additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN). Exact expressions for the probability distributions of the differential phase and amplitude ratio are derived for the BER calculation. The BER and optimum boundary are obtained for various channel conditions. In addition, the results for the BER in the presence of CCI are provided.

    This paper presents the performance of FH/MFSK systems, which exploit silent gaps in speech to accommodate more users, over Rayleigh fading channels. Two kinds of receivers are considered: one uses a threshold on the received signal strength to declare whether the signals were present or not, and the other is assumed to have perfect transmitter-state information obtained from using additional bandwidth. Results show that, if the codeword dropping and codeword error are assumed to be equally costly, the former can achieve slightly better performance than the latter in the decoding error probability. This finding suggests that, for the system to exploit silent gaps in speech, it is advantageous for the receiver to use a threshold to declare whether signals were present or not instead of relying on the transmitter-state information.

    As a data transmission rate must be increased as required to support the future high-speed wireless communication systems under multipath fading, the conventional DS-CDMA scheme suffers considerably from an intensive processing requirement for the increased spreading rate to combat the inter-chip interference (ICI) and furthermore, from the intersymbol interference (ISI) as the symbol duration becomes less than the channel delay spread. In this paper, a multi-carrier parallel combinatory DS-CDMA (MC-PC-CDMA) scheme is considered as one possible variant access scheme to realize a bandwidth efficient transmission for high transmission rate while maintaining the beneficial features of the DS-CDMA scheme. This scheme combines the parallel combinatory signaling feature of the existing parallel combinatory CDMA (PC-CDMA) scheme with the orthogonal carrier multiplexing feature of multi-carrier modulation so as to improve the bandwidth efficiency and to reduce the self-interference among the parallel spreading sequences of each user, respectively. This particular system configuration also treats the previously proposed multi-carrier DS-CDMA systems as a special case. Our analysis of the bit error rate for the asynchronous CDMA system investigates the performance characteristics of the proposed system on varying design parameters, and shows the performance comparison with other types of multi-carrier DS-CDMA systems.

    The channel throughput and packet delay of wireless medium access control (MAC) protocols with Rayleigh fading, shadowing and capture effect are analyzed. We consider CSMA/CA protocols as the wireless MAC protocols, since CSMA/CA protocols are based on the standard for wireless Local Area Networks (LANs) IEEE 802. 11. We analyze the channel throughput and packet delay for three types of CSMA/CA protocols; Basic CSMA/CA, Stop-and-Wait CSMA/CA and 4-Way Handshake CSMA/CA. We calculate the capture probability of an Access Point (AP) in a channel with Rayleigh fading, shadowing, and near-far effects, and we derive the throughput and packet delay for the various protocols. We have found that the performance of CSMA/CA in a radio channel model is 50 percent less than in an error free channel model in low traffic load, while the throughput and packet delay of CSMA/CA in a radio channel model show better performance than in an error free channel model in high traffic load. We also found that the 4-Way Handshake CSMA/CA protocol is superior to the other CSMA/CA protocols in high traffic load.

  • Performance Analysis of Mobile Radio Network with Fixed Power Assignment, Rayleigh Fading, and Near-Far Effects over AWGN Channel

    The capture effect caused by some of power assignment, Rayleigh fading, and near-far effect, can improve the performance of random-access techniques in mobile radio environment. Moreover, if we consider the overall effect of them, the system performance can be noticeably improved. In this paper, the combined effect of fixed power assignment scheme, Rayleigh fading, and near-far effect on the performance of slotted ALOHA are studied. Plus, the performance degradation caused by AWGN is also investigated. The type of signal capture to be considered is the one that a signal involved in a collision survives if its power level exceeds the sum of the other signals participating in the same collision. Numerical calculations are used to demonstrate the degree of improvement and degradation.
