A surrogate-based electromagnetic (EM) optimization using neural networks (NNs) is presented for computationally efficient microwave bandpass filter (BPF) design. This paper first describes the forward problem (EM analysis) and the inverse problems (EM design), and the two fundamental issues in BPF designs. The first issue is that the EM analysis is a time-consuming task, and the second one is that EM design highly depends on the structural optimization performed with the help of EM analysis. To accelerate the optimization design, two surrogate models of forward and inverse models are introduced here, which are built with the NNs. As a result, the inverse model can instantaneously guess initial structural parameters with high accuracy by simply inputting synthesized coupling-matrix elements into the NN. Then, the forward model in conjunction with optimization algorithm enables designers to rapidly find optimal structural parameters from the initial ones. The effectiveness of the surrogate-based EM optimization is verified through the structural designs of a typical fifth-order microstrip BPF with multiple couplings.

In this paper, a novel microstrip hairpin-line bandpass filter which employs a modified Minkowski fractal shape is proposed. Although conventional hairpin-line filters are popular for RF front ends, they suffer from undesired spurious responses located at the second harmonic, which causes asymmetry in the upper skirt band. By proper design, the second harmonic of fractal filters can be significantly suppressed through the use of fractal shape. To validate this novel geometry, the proposed filters are fabricated and measured. Simulated results are in good agreement with measured results.
This paper overviews the history of a class of varactor tuned bandpass filters. Since the miniaturization as well as the high performance of the tunable bandpass filters is required for the next generation mobile communication systems, the discussion is focused on the various planar type tunable filters including active configurations. Brief design concepts of various tunable filter configurations as well as their characteristics are discussed.

Two compact and low loss dual-mode filters are proposed by using degenerate modes of slotted triangular microstrip patch resonators. The geometrical size and radiation loss of the triangular patch are reduced simultaneously by loading both horizontal and vertical slots. The resonant frequencies of two degenerate modes can be easily controlled by varying the dimensions and positions of the slots. A two-pole dual-mode filter operating at 3.94 GHz with a fractional bandwidth of 4.3% is designed, fabricated, and measured. The measured results verify well the theoretical predictions.

This paper reviews recent progresses in the research and development of planar photonic band-gap (PBG) structures, also called electromagnetic crystals, for microwave and millimeter-wave applications. Planar electromagnetic crystals are particularly attractive and intensively investigated because of their easy fabrication, low cost, and compatibility with standard planar circuit technology. Two configurations and their applications are described in this paper: a square lattice of holes etched in a ground plane and the recently developed Uniplanar Compact PBG (UC-PBG) structure. Basic properties as well as applications to microwave circuits are reported. These include harmonic tuning in power amplifier, leakage suppression in conductor-backed coplanar waveguide (CB-CPW), realization of planar slow-wave structure, and performance improvement in microstrip filters and patch antennas.

This letter proposes a microstrip band elimination filter having an optically controlled small gap on a resonant section for the shift of the eliminated frequency range using the semiconductor plasma. The basic characteristics of this filter are analized theoretically utilizing the (FD)2TD method.

For the effective control of microwaves in the frequency domain, we propose a new method utilizing current distributions of standing waves on the terminated microstrip line. We analized a short ended microstrip line using the (FD)2TD method to indicate the effectiveness of our proposal. Further we proposed an optically controlled microstrip filter as an application of this method.
