Volume integral equations combined with orthogonality of guided mode and non-guided field are proposed for the TE incidence of two-dimensional optical slab waveguide. The slab waveguide is assumed to satisfy the single mode condition. The formulation of the integral equations are described in detail. The matrix equation obtained by applying the method of moments to the integral equations is shown. Numerical results for step, gap, and grating waveguides are given. They are compared to published papers to validate the proposed method.

This paper reports a single dimensional mode based multiplexer / de-multiplexer using the slab waveguide to realize high modes multiplexing and high integration in the non-MIMO (multi-in multi-out) multimode transmission system. A sufficient mode crosstalk of -20 dB was obtained by selecting suitable parameters of the spacing between the connecting positions of each arrayed waveguide Di, the radius slab waveguide R0 and lateral V-parameter.

New boundary integral equations are proposed for two-port slab waveguides which satisfy single mode condition. The boundary integral equations are combined with the orthogonality of guided mode and non-guided field. They are solved by the standard boundary element method with no use of mode expansion technique. Reflection and transmission coefficients of guided mode are directly determined by the boundary element method. To validate the proposed method, step waveguides for TE wave incidence and triangular rib waveguides for TM wave incidence are investigated by numerical calculations.

We calculated propagation constants of supermodes for two-dimensional two-slab waveguides, with small core gap, using second-order perturbation expansion from gapless slab waveguide system, and compared our results with the existing works. In the perturbation calculation, we used trapezoidal method to calculate the integral over the transverse direction in space and obtained second-order expansion of (core gap)/(core width) for propagation constants. Our result can explain the qualitative relationship between the propagation constants and the gap distance in the neighbor of (core gap)/(core width) being zero.

We have fabricated several two-dimensional photonic-crystal (2DPC) slab waveguides by using fine electron beam lithography and dry etching. The 2DPC waveguides include straight, bend, Y-branch, directional coupler, and coupled-cavity waveguides on the GaAs/AlGaAs substrate as an application to the ultra-small and ultra-fast all-optical switching device. Transmission spectra and near field patterns were characterized in a wide wavelength range from 850 to 1600 nm with the sample finished to the air-bridge type 2DPC slab. These waveguides appear to be suitable for achieving the waveguide platform in the symmetrical-Mach-Zehnder device.

We show examples of accurate computer-aided design of power coupling between two dielectric slab waveguides of finite length by using the boundary-element method (BEM) based on guided-mode extracted integral equations (GMEIE's). The integral equations derived in this paper can be solved by the conventional BEM. Various properties in numerical calculations of GMEIE's are examined. The reflection and coupling coefficients of the guided wave as well as the scattering power are calculated numerically for the case of incidence TM guided-mode. The presented results are checked by the energy conservation law and reciprocity theorem. The results show that it is possible to design an optimum coupling between two dielectric slab waveguides by using the BEM based on GMEIE's.

Loss analysis in bent graded-index optical slab waveguides is given using the modal-matching method. The conformal mapping replaces curved structure by an equivalent straight waveguide with a modified index profile. For this planar waveguide structure, the normal modes are calculated using a multilayer approximation method. The wave incident on the bend is expanded initially into a finite set of normal modes of the equivalent straight structure, and the transverse fields are matched across the junction. The numerical results show the loss formation in the graded-index waveguides and its dependence of the effective index of the corresponding straight waveguide.

In this paper, scattering problem of the directional coupler for the slab waveguides are analyzed by the mode-matching method in the sense of least squares for the lowest order even TE mode incidence. It is considered that the analysis of this coupler for the slab waveguides presents the fundamental data to design the directional coupler for the three dimensional waveguides. This directional coupler is composed of three parallel slabs which are placed at equal space in the dielectric medium. Respective slabs are core regions of three respective waveguides. The periodic groove structure of finite extent is formed on the both surfaces of core region of the central waveguide among them. The power of incident TE mode is coupled to other two waveguides through periodic groove structure. The coupled TE mode propagates in the other waveguides to the same or opposite direction for the direction of incident mode which propagates in the waveguide having periodic structure when the Bragg condition is selected appropriately. The scattered field of each region of this directional coupler is described by the superpositions of the plane waves with bandlimited spectra, respectively. These approximate wave functions are determined by the minimization of the mean-square boundary residual. This method results in the simultaneous Fredholm type integral equations of the second kind for these spectra. The first order approximate solutions of the integral equations are derived and the coupling efficiency and scattered fields are analyzed on the basis of those solutions in this paper.

The optical waveguides containing phthalocyanine as an optically active material were fabricated and transmission properties were investigated experimentally and numerically. The positive refractive index change was observed in the glass waveguide with a vanadyl phthalocyanine thin film as a top layer. The thermal influence on refractive index change was estimated by surface plasmon measurements.

We report the dispersion of two-photon absorption (TPA) coefficient, (β), in polydiacetylene (12, 8) thin film waveguides in the wavelength range less than the one-photon band-gap with a 100 femtosecond mode-locked Ti: Sapphire laser pulses. The TPA coefficient was found to be 4 cm/GW for TE polarization at 900 nm (1.38 eV) by taking into account a Gaussian intensity distribution as well as a temporal pulse shape. We observed a sharp resonance in β above the first one-photon allowed transition with a full width at half maximum (FWHM) of 90 meV.
