  • A Naming, Storage, and Retrieval Model for Software Assets

    This paper presents a model for the naming, packing, version control, storage, and retrieval of software assets. The naming and version control schemes are based on content-derived coding of the asset body. The name-to-asset mapping can be fixed or be varying with time. The packing scheme is designed so that the asset integrity verification and authentication information is made an intrinsic part of the packed asset. A comparison with an existing naming and version control scheme is given. The storage and retrieval scheme is a unification of four most commonly used methods, namely the enumerative method, the keyword-based method, the faceted method, and the text-based method. This unification makes it possible for the users to access heterogeneous repositories (with different storage and retrieval methods) simultaneously, using the same tool set and query syntax. The degradation functions technique is used to automatically broaden queries. A demonstrative retrieval tool is described to show how the unification of methods is done at the user interface level.

  • Call Level and Packet Level Performance Analysis of Splitted-Rating Channel Scheme in Multimedia UMTS Networks by Level Dependent QBD Process

    We propose and analyze a new efficient handoff scheme called Splitted-Rating Channel Scheme in UMTS networks, and we analyze the call level performance of splitted-rating channel scheme and then packet level performance of downlink traffic at UMTS circuit-switched networks. In order to reduce the blocking probability of originating calls and the forced termination probability of handoff calls, a splitted-rating channel scheme is applied to the multimedia UMTS networks. This multimedia network supports two classes of calls; narrowband call requiring one channel and wideband call requiring multiple channels. The channels in service for wideband call are splitted its channels for lending to originating call and handoff call according to threshold control policy. By assuming that arrivals of narrowband calls and arrivals of wideband calls are Poisson, we model the number of narrowband calls and the number of wideband calls in the one cell by Level Dependent Quasi-Birth-Death (QBD) process and obtain their joint stationary distribution. For packet level analysis, we first describe the downlink traffic from the base station to a mobile terminal in UMTS networks, and calculate the mean packet delay of a connected wideband call by using QBD analysis. Numerical examples show that our splitted-rating channel scheme reduces the blocking probability of originating call and the forced termination probability of handoff call with a little degradation of packet delay.

  • A One-Step Input Matching Method for Cascode CMOS Low-Noise Amplifiers

    In the design of cascode CMOS low-noise amplifiers, the gate-drain capacitance is generally neglected because it is thought to be small enough compared to gate-source capacitance. However, a careful examination will reveal the fact that the drain impedance of the input transistor significantly affects the input impedance through the gate-drain capacitance, especially as the CMOS technology getting more and more advanced. Moreover, the substrate coupling network of the input transistor also comes into play when the drain impedance of the input transistor is high enough compared to the substrate coupling network. In order to make input matching easier, it is desirable to know the details of the substrate coupling network. Unfortunately, designers generally do not have enough information about the technology they have used, not to mention knowing the details concerning the substrate coupling network. As a matter of fact, designers generally do have foundry provided component models that contain information about the substrate coupling network. This gives us the chance to minimize its effect and predict the input impedance of a low noise amplifier more accurately. In this paper, we show that the effect of the substrate coupling network can be ignored by keeping the drain impedance of the input transistor low enough and a proper drain impedance can then be chosen to achieve input matching without the need of iteration steps. Simulation results of a 2.4 GHz CMOS low noise amplifier using foundry provided component models are also presented to demonstrate the validation of the proposed input matching method.

  • Location and History Information Aided Efficient Initial Access Scheme for High-Speed Railway Communications

    The application of millimeter wave (mmWave) directional transmission technology in high-speed railway (HSR) scenarios helps to achieve the goal of multiple gigabit data rates with low latency. However, due to the high mobility of trains, the traditional initial access (IA) scheme with high time consumption is difficult to guarantee the effectiveness of the beam alignment. In addition, the high path loss at the coverage edge of the millimeter wave remote radio unit (mmW-RRU) will also bring great challenges to the stability of IA performance. Fortunately, the train trajectory in HSR scenarios is periodic and regular. Moreover, the cell-free network helps to improve the system coverage performance. Based on these observations, this paper proposes an efficient IA scheme based on location and history information in cell-free networks, where the train can flexibly select a set of mmW-RRUs according to the received signal quality. We specifically analyze the collaborative IA process based on the exhaustive search and based on location and history information, derive expressions for IA success probability and delay, and perform the numerical analysis. The results show that the proposed scheme can significantly reduce the IA delay and effectively improve the stability of IA success probability.
