With the rapid increase in demand for mobile data, mobile network operators are trying to expand wireless network capacity by deploying wireless local area network (LAN) hotspots on to which they can offload their mobile traffic. However, these network-centric methods usually do not fulfill the interests of mobile users (MUs). Taking into consideration many issues such as different applications' deadlines, monetary cost and energy consumption, how the MU decides whether to offload their traffic to a complementary wireless LAN is an important issue. Previous studies assume the MU's mobility pattern is known in advance, which is not always true. In this paper, we study the MU's policy to minimize his monetary cost and energy consumption without known MU mobility pattern. We propose to use a kind of reinforcement learning technique called deep Q-network (DQN) for MU to learn the optimal offloading policy from past experiences. In the proposed DQN based offloading algorithm, MU's mobility pattern is no longer needed. Furthermore, MU's state of remaining data is directly fed into the convolution neural network in DQN without discretization. Therefore, not only does the discretization error present in previous work disappear, but also it makes the proposed algorithm has the ability to generalize the past experiences, which is especially effective when the number of states is large. Extensive simulations are conducted to validate our proposed offloading algorithms.

This paper presents a data gathering protocol for wireless sensor network applications that require high throughput and topology adaptability under the premises of uniform traffic and energy-rich environments. Insofar as high throughput is concerned, TDMA is more suitable than CSMA. However, traditional TDMA protocols require complex scheduling of transmission time slots. The scheduling burden is the primary barrier to topology adaptability. Under the premises of uniform traffic and energy-rich environments, this paper proposes a token-scheduled multi-channel TDMA protocol named TKN-TWN to ease the scheduling burden while exploiting the advantages of TDMA. TKN-TWN uses multiple tokens to arbitrate data transmission. Due to the simplified scheduling based on tokens, TKN-TWN is able to provide adaptability for topology changes. The contention-free TDMA and multi-channel communication afford TKN-TWN the leverage to sustain high throughput based on pipelined packet forwarding. TKN-TWN further associates the ownership of tokens with transmission slot assignment toward throughput optimization. We implement TKN-TWN on Tmote Sky with TinyOS 2.1.1 operating system. Experimental results in a deployed network consisting of 32 sensor nodes show that TKN-TWN is robust to network changes caused by occasional node failures. Evaluation also shows that TKN-TWN is able to provide throughput of 9.7KByte/s.

How to manage the video streaming in future networks is becoming a more and more challenging issue. Recent studies on vehicular networks depict a new picture of the next generation Intelligent Transport System (ITS), with high level road safety and more comfortable driving experience. To cope with the heterogeneous network development for the next generation cellular network, centralized medium control is promising to be employed upon Road Side Unit (RSU). To accommodate the QoS constraints posed by video services in vehicular networks, the scalable video coding (SVC) scheme in H.264/AVC standard family offers spatial and temporal scalabilities in the video dissemination. In this paper, we target the resource allocation and layer selection problem for the multi-user video streaming over highway scenario, by employing SVC coding scheme for the video contents. We propose a Resource Allocation and Layer Selection (RALS) algorithm, which explicitly takes account of the utility value of each Group Of Picture (GOP) among all the vehicular users. Simulation results show that our proposed RALS algorithm outperforms the comparison schemes in typical scenarios.

In previous machine learning based fast intra mode decision algorithms for screen content videos, feature design is a key task and it is always difficult to obtain distinguishable features. In this paper, the idea of interaction of features is introduced to fast video coding algorithm, and a fast intra mode decision algorithm based on feature cross is proposed for screen content videos. The numeric features and category features are designed based on the characteristics of screen content videos, and the adaptive factorization network (AFN) is improved and adopted to carry out feature interaction to designed features, and output distinguishable features. The experimental results show that for AI (All Intra) configuration, compared with standard VVC/H.266, the coding time is reduced by 29.64% and the BD rate is increased only by 1.65%.

In the upcoming video coding standard VVC (Versatile Video Coding, H.266), a new coding block structure named quadtree nested multi-type trees (MTT) has been proposed. Compared with the quadtree structure defined in HEVC (High Efficiency Video Coding), the partition structure of MTT can achieve better coding performance. Since the splitting scheme of a CU (Coding Unit) need to be calculated recursively, the computational complexity is significantly increased. To reduce computational complexity as well as maintain compression performance, a fast multi-type tree decision algorithm is proposed. The application of binary and ternary tree in horizontal or vertical direction is found to be closely related to the characteristics of CU in this paper, and a metric named pixel difference of sub-blocks (SBPD) is defined to measure the characteristics of CU in different splitting type. By comparing the SBPD in horizontal and vertical sub-blocks, the selection of binary and ternary tree can be decided in advance, so as to skip some redundant splitting modes. Experimental results show that compared with the original reference software VTM 4.0, the average time saving of the proposed algorithm is 27% and the BD-rate is only increased by 0.55%.

Currently, the most advanced knowledge distillation models use a metric learning approach based on probability distributions. However, the correlation between supervised probability distributions is typically geometric and implicit, causing inefficiency and an inability to capture structural feature representations among different tasks. To overcome this problem, we propose a knowledge distillation loss using the robust sliced Wasserstein distance with geometric median (GMSW) to estimate the differences between the teacher and student representations. Due to the intuitive geometric properties of GMSW, the student model can effectively learn to align its produced hidden states from the teacher model, thereby establishing a robust correlation among implicit features. In experiment, our method outperforms state-of-the-art models in both high-resource and low-resource settings.

In this study, a novel forest method based on specific random trees (SRT) was proposed for a multiclass classification problem. The proposed SRT was built on one specific class, which decides whether a sample belongs to a certain class. The forest can make a final decision on classification by ensembling all the specific trees. Compared with the original random forest, our method has higher strength, but lower correlation and upper error bound. The experimental results based on 10 different public datasets demonstrated the efficiency of the proposed method.

The new generation video standard, i.e., High-efficiency Video Coding (HEVC), shows a significantly improved efficiency relative to the last standard, i.e., H.264. However, the quad tree structured coding units (CUs), which are adopted in HEVC to improve compression efficiency, cause high computational complexity. In this study, a novel fast algorithm is proposed for CU partition in intra coding to reduce the computational complexity. A rough minimum depth prediction of the largest CU method and an early termination method for CU partition based on the total coding bits of the current CU are employed. Many approaches have been proposed to reduce the encoding complexity of HEVC, but these methods do not use the total coding bits of the current CU as the main basis for judgment to judge the CU complexity. Compared with the reference software HM16.6, the proposed algorithm reduces encoding time by 45% on average and achieves an approximately 1.1% increase in Bjntegaard delta bit rate and a negligible peak signal-to-noise ratio loss.

The fast evolving credential attacks have been a great security challenge to current password-based information systems. Recently, biometrics factors like facial, iris, or fingerprint that are difficult to forge rise as key elements for designing passwordless authentication. However, capturing and analyzing such factors usually require special devices, hindering their feasibility and practicality. To this end, we present WiASK, a device-free WiFi sensing enabled Authentication System exploring Keystroke dynamics. More specifically, WiASK captures keystrokes of a user typing a pre-defined easy-to-remember string leveraging the existing WiFi infrastructure. But instead of focusing on the string itself which are vulnerable to password attacks, WiASK interprets the way it is typed, i.e., keystroke dynamics, into user identity, based on the biologically validated correlation between them. We prototype WiASK on the low-cost off-the-shelf WiFi devices and verify its performance in three real environments. Empirical results show that WiASK achieves on average 93.7% authentication accuracy, 2.5% false accept rate, and 5.1% false reject rate.

In this paper, the problem of channel estimation in orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing systems over fast time-varying channel is investigated by using a Basis Expansion Model (BEM). Regarding the effects of the Gibbs phenomenon in the BEM, we propose a new method to alleviate it and reduce the modeling error. Theoretical analysis and detail comparison results show that the proposed BEM method can provide improved modeling error compared with other BEMs such as CE-BEM and GCE-BEM. In addition, instead of using the frequency-domain Kronecker delta structure, a new clustered pilot structure is proposed to enhance the estimation performance further. The new clustered pilot structure can effectively reduce the inter-carrier interference especially in the case of high Doppler spreads.

The demand for wireless traffic is increasing rapidly, which has posed huge challenges to mobile network operators (MNOs). A heterogeneous network (HetNet) framework, composed of a marcocell and femtocells, has been proved to be an effective way to cope with the fast-growing traffic demand. In this paper, we assume that both the macrocell and femtocells are owned by the same MNO, with revenue optimization as its ultimate goal. We aim to propose a pricing strategy for macro-femto HetNets with a user centric vision, namely, mobile users would have their own interest to make rational decisions on selecting between the macrocell and femtocells to maximize their individual benefit. We formulate a Stackelberg game to analyze the interactions between the MNO and users, and obtain the equilibrium solution for the Stackelberg game. Via extensive simulations, we evaluate the proposed pricing strategy in terms of its efficiency with respect to the revenue optimization.

In this paper, we present the sexual dimorphism analysis in 3D human face and perform gender classification based on the result of sexual dimorphism analysis. Four types of features are extracted from a 3D human-face image. By using statistical methods, the existence of sexual dimorphism is demonstrated in 3D human face based on these features. The contributions of each feature to sexual dimorphism are quantified according to a novel criterion. The best gender classification rate is 94% by using SVMs and Matcher Weighting fusion method. This research adds to the knowledge of 3D faces in sexual dimorphism and affords a foundation that could be used to distinguish between male and female in 3D faces.

Dai-Yuan (DY) conjugate gradient method is an effective method for solving large-scale unconstrained optimization problems. In this paper, a new DY method, possessing a spectral conjugate parameter βk, is presented. An attractive property of the proposed method is that the search direction generated at each iteration is descent, which is independent of the line search. Global convergence of the proposed method is also established when strong Wolfe conditions are employed. Finally, comparison experiments on impulse noise removal are reported to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

H control theory provides a systematic frequency shaping method of control systems. The existence condition of the solution for so called standard H control problem and the form of the H controller are derived in 1989. One of the most important feature of the controller is that it has many free parameters which can be chosen independently of the H control. On the other hand there is a criticism that the time response of prototypal H control systems is slow. Therefore in this paper we introduce an H2 control optimization by taking advantage of the free parameters to expect the improvement of the time response of the H control system. In this paper we consider state feedback case. The free parameters of state feedback H controller are not directly obtained from well known results since this problem is a kind of non-standard problem. Therefore, in the first place, we will get them via reviewing the FI (ful information) case. Then the free parameters of the state feedback H controller are shown based on the corrected FI solution. These parameters are next used to optimize an H2 control objective in the H control system.

With the rapid increase in demand for mobile data, mobile network operators are trying to expand wireless network capacity by deploying wireless local area network (LAN) hotspots on which they can offload their mobile traffic. However, these network-centric methods usually do not fulfill the interests of mobile users (MUs). Taking into consideration many issues, MUs should be able to decide whether to offload their traffic to a complementary wireless LAN. Our previous work studied single-flow wireless LAN offloading from a MU's perspective by considering delay-tolerance of traffic, monetary cost and energy consumption. In this paper, we study the multi-flow mobile data offloading problem from a MU's perspective in which a MU has multiple applications to download data simultaneously from remote servers, and different applications' data have different deadlines. We formulate the wireless LAN offloading problem as a finite-horizon discrete-time Markov decision process (MDP) and establish an optimal policy by a dynamic programming based algorithm. Since the time complexity of the dynamic programming based offloading algorithm is still high, we propose a low time complexity heuristic offloading algorithm with performance sacrifice. Extensive simulations are conducted to validate our proposed offloading algorithms.

The Cuckoo Search (CS) is apt to be trapped in local optimum relating to complex target functions. This drawback has been recognized as the bottleneck of its widespread use. This paper, with the purpose of improving CS, puts forward a Cuckoo Search algorithm featuring Multi-Learning Strategies (LSCS). In LSCS, the Converted Learning Module, which features the Comprehensive Learning Strategy and Optimal Learning Strategy, tries to make a coordinated cooperation between exploration and exploitation, and the switching in this part is decided by the transition probability Pc. When the nest fails to be renewed after m iterations, the Elite Learning Perturbation Module provides extra diversity for the current nest, and it can avoid stagnation. The Boundary Handling Approach adjusted by Gauss map is utilized to reset the location of nest beyond the boundary. The proposed algorithm is evaluated by two different tests: Test Group A(ten simple unimodal and multimodal functions) and Test Group B(the CEC2013 test suite). Experiments results show that LSCS demonstrates significant advantages in terms of convergence speed and optimization capability in solving complex problems.

Cross-component linear model (CCLM) chromaticity prediction is a new technique introduced in Versatile Video Coding (VVC), which utilizes the reconstructed luminance component to predict the chromaticity parts, and can improve the coding performance. However, it increases the coding complexity. In this paper, how to accelerate the chroma intra-prediction process is studied based on texture characteristics. Firstly, two observations have been found through experimental statistics for the process. One is that the choice of the chroma intra-prediction candidate modes is closely related to the texture complexity of the coding unit (CU), and the other is that whether the direct mode (DM) is selected is closely related to the texture similarity between current chromaticity CU and the corresponding luminance CU. Secondly, a fast chroma intra-prediction mode decision algorithm is proposed based on these observations. A modified metric named sum modulus difference (SMD) is introduced to measure the texture complexity of CU and guide the filtering of the irrelevant candidate modes. Meanwhile, the structural similarity index measurement (SSIM) is adopted to help judging the selection of the DM mode. The experimental results show that compared with the reference model VTM8.0, the proposed algorithm can reduce the coding time by 12.92% on average, and increases the BD-rate of Y, U, and V components by only 0.05%, 0.32%, and 0.29% respectively.

Virtual Reality (VR) 360 degree video has ultra-high definition. Reducing the coding complexity becomes a key consideration in coding algorithm design. In this paper, a novel candidate mode pruning process is introduced between Rough Mode Decision and Most Probable Mode based on the statistical analysis of the intra-coding parameters used in VR 360 degree video coding under Cubemap projection (CMP) format. In addition, updated coding bits thresholds for VR 360 degree video are designed in the proposed algorithm. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm brings 38.73% and 23.70% saving in average coding time at the cost of only 1.4% and 2.1% Bjontegaard delta rate increase in All-Intra mode and Randomaccess mode, respectively.

In recent years, the adoption of Software as a Service (SaaS) cloud services has surpassed that of Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) cloud service and is now the focus of attention in cloud computing. The cloud market is becoming highly competitive owing to the increasing number of cloud service providers (CSPs), who are likely to exhibit different cloud capacities, i.e., the cloud market is heterogeneous. Moreover, as different users generally exhibit different Quality of Service (QoS) preferences, it is challenging to set prices for cloud services of good QoS. In this study, we investigate the price competition in the heterogeneous cloud market where two SaaS providers, denoted by CSP1 and CSP2, lease virtual machine (VM) instances from IaaS providers to offer cloud-based application services to users. We assume that CSP1 only has M/M/1 queue of VM instances owing to its limited cloud resources, whereas CSP2 has M/M/∞ queue of VM instances reflecting its adequate resources. We consider two price competition scenarios in which two CSPs engage in two games: one is a noncooperative strategic game (NSG) where the two CSPs set prices simultaneously and the other is a Stackelberg game (SG) where CSP2 sets the price first as the leader and is followed by CSP1, who sets the price in response to CSP2. Each user decides which cloud services to purchase (if purchases are to be made) based on the prices and QoS. The NSG scenario corresponds to the practical cloud market, where two CSPs with different cloud capacities begin to offer cloud services simultaneously; meanwhile, the SG scenario covers the instance where a more recent CSP plans to enter a cloud market whose incumbent CSP has larger cloud resources. Equilibrium is achieved in each of the scenarios. Numerical results are presented to verify our theoretical analysis.

As an important extension of high-efficiency video coding (HEVC), screen content coding (SCC) includes various new coding modes, such as Intra Block Copy (IBC), Palette-based coding (Palette), and Adaptive Color Transform (ACT). These new tools have improved screen content encoding performance. This paper proposed a novel and fast algorithm by classifying Code Units (CUs) as text CUs or non-text CUs. For text CUs, the Intra mode was skipped in the compression process, whereas for non-text CUs, the IBC mode was skipped. The current CU depth range was then predicted according to its adjacent left CU depth level. Compared with the reference software HM16.7+SCM5.4, the proposed algorithm reduced encoding time by 23% on average and achieved an approximate 0.44% increase in Bjøntegaard delta bit rate and a negligible peak signal-to-noise ratio loss.
