With a view to applying to the active matrix displays, micromechanical electrostatic switches having Si-N both-ends-fixed beam of size 1.4 µm by 23 µm grown with LP-CVD on Si wafer were studied about its kinetic switching characteristics, especially its switching speed and hysteresis behavior. Electrostatic beam sticking problems were improved with the additional inverse polarity and short duration pulse following on the turn-on signal. The switching beam deflection of 0.16 µm with the switching time of less than 100 nsec. was measured by tightly focused laser interferometric method. Observed turn-on threshold voltages were more than 30 V, and the on/off hysteresis widths were from one third to two thirds of its threshold voltage. The memory function was experimented for the 2 msec. long holding period with the hold voltage of 25 V following on the writing pulse with the duration of 2 µsec. and the amplitude of 32 V. Now, planarization process has been considered to imtroduce the contact electrodes that were not built-in for these experiments. Although conductive actual switches were not tested, with the obtained results, it seems that the micromechanical electrostatic switch has the large potentials as an active matrix element in display panel especially in electro-luminescent devices or field-emission devices.

This paper proposes a novel phase ambiguity resolver with combining a very low power Viterbi decoder employing a scarce state transition scheme to realize cost effective receivers for the PCM sound broadcasting satellite service. The theoretical analyses on phase decision performance show that the proposed resolver achieves the symbol-by-symbol phase detection and decides correctly phases of the demodulated data even if the bit error probability of 710-2. The resolver also reduces the phase decision time to below 1/1000 of that of the conventional resolver. Furthermore, experimental results of the power consumption estimate that the prototype Viterbi decoder consumes only 60mW at the data rate of 24.576Mbit/s.

A novel series-tapered nonlinear directional coupler is proposed to improve all-optical switching characteristics. Its switching characteristics are analyzed by using a beam propagation method based on the Galerkin's finite element technique. It is presented that the critical power of the series-tapered nonlinear directional coupler is smaller than conventional uniform symmetric and tapered nonlinear directional couplers.

The throughput performance of the non-persistent carrier sense spread spectrum with overload detection (NP-CSSS/OD) protocol is analysed and compared with that of the conventional non-persistent and one-persistent carrier sense multiple access with collision detection (NP-CSMA/CD and 1P-CSMA/CD) and the one-persistent carrier sense spread spectrum with overload detection (1P-CSSS/OD) protocols. We also introduced utilization measurements and did some performance comparisons between these protocols. At high offered loads, the NP-CSSS/OD protocol is found to offer the best throughput and utilization performances amongst them.

We have developed a 15-Gbit/s 96-gate Si-bipolar gate array using 0.5-µm Si-bipolar technology, a sophisticated internal cell design, an I/O buffer design suitable for high-speed operation and high-frequency package technology. The decision circuit and 4 : 1 multiplexer fabricated on the gate array operate up to 15-Gbit/s and above 10-Gbit/s respectively. The data input sensitivity and the phase margin of the decision circuit are 53 mVpp and 288 at 10-Gbit/s operation. This gate array promises to be useful in shortening the development period and lowering cost of 10-Gbit/s class IC's.

Silver is a fundamental material for electrical contact application. In spite of high electrical conductivity and economical advantage, silver surface is corroded easily by environment contained sulfide. A corrosion product as Ag2S deteriorates the property of contact reliability. In order to examine contact reliability, the acceleration tests have been accepted widely in industries. In the present study, the acceleration factor of the contact reliability for the sulfide film on the surface of silver contact which was subject to the tarnish acceleration test was clarified in comparison with the film grown in a normal office environment. The accelerated environment based on the Japan Electric Industry Development Association (JEIDA) standard No.25 was adopted. This environment is consisted of air contained 3 ppm H2S gas under 40, 85-95% RH. The growth rate of the sulfide film (Ag2S) was evaluated by applying the ellipsometry analysis. In the results, it was found that growth of Ag2S film of 500 in thickness in the normal office environment required corrosion time of 3103 h. This thickness of 500 caused increase in contact resistance of 0.1-1.0 (Ω). However, in the accelerated environment, corrosion time decreased to 1.7 h for same thickness. Therefore, the acceleration factor was obtained by comparison of these time as 1.8103 for the standard test of JEIDA.

This paper describes 950 GHz power performance of double-doped AlGaAs/InGaAs/AlGaAs heterojunction field-effect transistors (HJFET) operated at a drain bias voltage ranging from 2.5 to 3.5 V. The developed 1.0 µm gatelength HJFET exhibited a maximum drain current (Imax) of 500 mA/mm, a transconductance (gm) of 300 mS/mm, and a gate-to-drain breakdown voltage of 11 V. Operated at 3.0 V, a 17.5 mm gate periphery HJFET showed 1.4 W Pout and -50.3 dBc adjacent channel leakage power at a 50 kHz off-carrier frequency from 950 MHz with 50% PAE. Harmonic balance simulations revealed that the flat gm characteristics of the HJFET with respect to gate bias voltage are effective to suppress intermodulation distortion under large signal operation. The developed HJFET has great potential for small-sized digital cellular power applications operated at a low DC supply voltage.

In the original shared buffer memory switch, there exists inherent unfairness since multicast cells always own higher priority to be served such that unicast cells must endure longer delay time. We propose a multicasting balancing method to overcome this unfair phenomenon in which the service order for two kinds of cells is decided by a ratio of unicast queue length and multicast queue length for each output port. Performance results are provided to verify the effectiveness.

In this paper we present a system for secure communications based on chaos synchronization. Unlike the existing systems for communication via chaotic synchronization, our system extracts the information at the receiver without error. A possibility for secure communications using Lorenz system is given. A practical algorithm for secret-key cryptography is suggested and is evaluated through statistical tests that have not shown any weakness. Furthermore, the algorithm is extremely simple for implementation in a program.

In this paper, a description of the Hopfield/Tank model used for the telecommunication network routing problem is given at first. And then through the "static" (i.e. the eigenvalue and the eigenspace of the connection matrix) and the dynamic analysis of the model, it has been found that the model has the faster rate to converge to the optimal or sub-optimal solutions from an initial value. Therefore the quality of the final solutions can be guaranteed. The influence of the initial value to the final solutions is also concerned in this paper. The simulation results are given at the end of this paper.

Tracing solution curves of nonlinear equations is an important problem in circuit simulation. In this paper, simple techniques are proposed for improving the computational efficiency of the spherical method, which is a method for tracing solution curves. These techniques are very effective in circuit simulation where solution curves often turn very rapidly. Moreover, they can be easily performed with little computational effort.

In this paper, we discuss computational methods for obtaining the bifurcation points and the branch directions at branching points of solution curves for the nonlinear resistive circuits. There are many kinds of the bifurcation points such as limit point, branch point and isolated point. At these points, the Jacobian matrix of circuit equation becomes singular so that we cannot directly apply the usual numerical techniques such as Newton-Raphson method. Therefore, we propose a simple modification technique such that the Newton-Raphson method can be also applied to the modified equations. On the other hand, a curve tracing algorithm can continuously trace the solution curves having the limit points and/or branching points. In this case, we can see whether the curve has passed through a bifurcation point or not by checking the sign of determinant of the Jacobian matrix. We also propose two different methods for calculating the directions of branches at branching point. Combining these algorithms, complicated solution curves will be easily traced by the curve tracing method. We show the example of a Hopfield network in Sect.5.

Slepian, Wolf and Wyner proved famous source coding theorems for correlated i.i.d. sources. On the other hand recently Han and Verdú have shown the source and channel coding theorems on general sources and channels whose statistics can be arbitrary, that is, no assumption such as stationarity or ergodicity is imposed. We prove source coding theorems on correlated general sources by using the method which Han and Verdú developed to prove their theorems. Also, through an example, we show some new results which are essentially different from those already obtained for the i.i.d. source cases.

We study all-to-all broadcasting in hypercubes with randomly distributed Byzantine faults. We construct an efficient broadcasting scheme BC1-n-cube running on the n-dimensional hypercube (n-cube for short) in 2n rounds, where for communication by each node of the n-cube, only one of its links is used in each round. The scheme BC1-n-cube can tolerate (n-1)/2 Byzantine faults of nodes and/or links in the worst case. If there are exactly f Byzantine faulty nodes randomly distributed in the n-cabe, BC1-n-cube succeeds with a probability higher than 1(64nf/2n) n/2. In other words, if 1/(64nk) of all the nodes(i.e., 2n/(64nk) nodes) fail in Byzantine manner randomly in the n-cube, then the scheme succeeds with a probability higher than 1kn/2. We also consider the case where all nodes are faultless but links may fail randomly in the n-cube. Broadcasting by BC1-n-cube is successful with a probability hig her than 1kn/2 provided that not more than 1/(64(n1)k) of all the links in the n-cube fail in Byzantine manner randomly. For the case where only links may fail, we give another broadcasting scheme BC2-n-cube which runs in 2n2 rounds. Broadcasting by BC2-n-cube is successful with a high probability if the number of Byzantine faulty links randomly distributed in the n-cube is not more than a constant fraction of the total number of links. That is, it succeeds with a probability higher than 1nkn/2 if 1/(48k) of all the links in the n-cube fail randomly in Byzantine manner.

It is known that a family of p-ary bent sequences, whose elements take values of GF (p) with a prime p, possesses low periodic correlation properties and high linear span. Firstly such a family is shown to consist of balanced sequences in the sense that the frequency of appearances in one period is the same for each nonzero element and once less for zero element. Secondly the exact distribution of the periodic correlation values is given for the family.

Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITS) represents a wide class of computer based tutoring systems, designed with an extensive use of the technology of modern Artificial Intelligence. Successful applications of various expert systems and other knowledge based systems of AI gave rise to a new wave of interests to ITS. Yet, many authors conclude that practically valuable achievements of ITS are rather modest despite the relatively long history of attempts to use knowledge based systems for tutoring. It is advocated in this paper that some basic obstacles for designing really successful ITS are due to the lack of well understood and sound models of the education process. The paper proposes to overcome these problems by borrowing the required models from AI and adjacent fields. In particular, the concept of Learning Levels from AI might be very useful both for giving a valuable retrospective analysis of computer based tutoring and for suggestion of some perspective directions in the field of ITS.

Conceptual graph formalism is a knowledge representation language in AI based on a graphical form of logic. Although logic is the basis of the conceptual graph theory, there is a strongly felt absence of a formal treatment of conceptual graphs as a logic programming language. In this paper, we develop the notion of a conceptual graph program as a kind of graph-based order-sorted logic program. First, we define the syntax of the conceptual graph program by specifying its major syntactic elements. Then, we develop a kind of model theoretic semantics and fixpoint semantics of the conceptual graph program. Finally, we show that the two types of semantics coincide for the conceptual graph programs.

  • A Constructing Method of Functional Model by Integrated Learning from Examples of Software Modification

    PAPER-Models

      Vol:

      Page(s):

One approach to develop software efficiently is to reuse existing software by modifying a part of it. However, modifying software will often introduce unexpected side effects into other parts of it. As a result, it costs much time and care to modify the software. So, in order to modify software efficiently, we have proposed a functional model to represent information about side effects caused by modification and a model based supporting system for modifying software. So far, however, an expert software developer must describe the entire functional model of the target software through the analysis of practical modifying processes. This will be an unnecessary burden on him. Moreover, the larger target software becomes, the harder the model construction becomes. Therefore, an automatic constructing method of the functional model is needed in order to solve this problem. So, this paper considers a method of acquiring useful interaction information by learning from training examples of modification. However, in our application domain, it seems that it is impossible to make complete domain theory and to prepare a large number or training examples in advance. Therefore, our learning method involves an integration of explanation-based learning (EBL) from positive examples of modification generated by the user and Similarity-based learning (SBL) from positive or negative examples generated by the user and the learning system. As a result, our method can acquire valid knowledge about the interaction from not so many examples under incomplete theory. Then, this paper presents a constructing method, in which our proposed learning method is incorporated, of a functional model. Finally, this paper demonstrates construction of the functional model in the domain of an event-driven queueing simulation program according to our learning method.
