  • Forward-Link Capacity Analysis for MC-CDMA

    OFDM-based networks utilizing the frequency reuse factor of 1 may produce the severe ICI (intercell interference) at the cell boundary even though overall cell capacity is increased and network deployment is facilitated. In the forward-link, the ICI may rise above a QoS (quality of service) threshold beyond some distance from BSs (base stations). In this paper, we analyze the forward-link capacity of an MC-CDMA system as a function of the ICI according to the distance from a cell. To achieve this goal, a closed form of the outage probability is derived and utilized to obtain the accommodated number of users and system parameters.

  • Virtual-FIFO Back-Off Algorithm for Collision Resolution in Wireless Networks

    This investigation proposes a virtual-FIFO (VFIFO) back-off algorithm for wireless networks. The proposed scheme takes advantage of the central unit (CU) in a wireless network to broadcast a common back-off window size to all the users, significantly alleviating the unfairness of bandwidth utilization in conventional binary exponential back-off (BEB) algorithms. The proposed scheme exploits the CU's capability for collision detection to estimate the number of simultaneously competing users. Additionally, packets generated in a given cycle are split into groups according to their times of arrivals and are guaranteed to be serviced one after another within the next cycle. Although the proposed algorithm is not strictly first come fist served, the FIFO principle is virtually accomplished. Simulation results demonstrate that the standard deviation of delay can be improved by more than two orders and the throughput can be maintained at 0.42 when the number of users approaches infinity. The capture effect even further improves system performance.

    In this letter, we present a space division multiple access (SDMA) approach for IEEE802.11a-based system employing pre-fast Fourier transform (FFT) adaptive array antenna (AAA) at base station (BS). As the core idea, we propose a preamble subcarrier assignment method to generate different preambles for different users using the same signal burst structure defined by IEEE802.11a, by which BS can effectively distinguish each user from other users and accurately estimate the channel impulse response (CIR) for each user. In this way, SDMA can be easily realized with no significant change in IEEE802.11a-based system. The performance of the proposed SDMA system is evaluated by computer simulation using a realistic spatio-temporal indoor wireless channel model.

  • On Bit Error Probabilities of SSMA Communication Systems Using Spreading Sequences of Markov Chains

    We study asynchronous SSMA communication systems using binary spreading sequences of Markov chains and prove the CLT (central limit theorem) for the empirical distribution of the normalized MAI (multiple-access interference). We also prove that the distribution of the normalized MAI for asynchronous systems can never be Gaussian if chains are irreducible and aperiodic. Based on these results, we propose novel theoretical evaluations of bit error probabilities in such systems based on the CLT and compare these and conventional theoretical estimations based on the SGA (standard Gaussian approximation) with experimental results. Consequently we confirm that the proposed theoretical evaluations based on the CLT agree with the experimental results better than the theoretical evaluations based on the SGA. Accordingly, using the theoretical evaluations based on the CLT, we give the optimum spreading sequences of Markov chains in terms of bit error probabilities.

    In this letter, we propose an enhanced gentle distributed coordination function (GDCF), which is a simple and effective collision resolution mechanism, to improve the performance of IEEE 802.11 DCF. We compare performance of the enhanced GDCF with that of the legacy DCF and the conventional GDCF via analysis and simulations. The enhanced GDCF introduces a new counter to check the number of consecutively successful transmissions, and the maximum permitted values of the counter differ for different backoff stages. The proposed GDCF is shown to have performance superior to that of the conventional GDCF for various combinations of contending stations and frame length.

    A T user multiple access collision channel without feedback is considered where the channel inputs are called packets. The packets take values from non-binary input alphabet. It is supposed that at most M users are active, i.e., are communicating simultaneously (2 M T). We are looking for codes and protocol sequences of users of minimum length such that from the output of the channel it can be determined which users were active, what were their synchron positions, and what they sent.

    This paper proposes a model for access control within object-oriented systems. The model is based on RBAC (role-based access control) and is called DRBAC (dynamic RBAC). Although RBAC is powerful in access control, the original design of RBAC required that user-role assignments and role-permission assignments should be handled statically (i.e., the assignments should be handled by human beings). Nevertheless, the following dynamic features are necessary in access control within a software system: (a) managing dynamic role switching, (b) avoiding Trojan horses, (c) managing role associations, and (d) handling dynamic role creation and deletion. DRBAC offers the dynamic features. This paper proposes DRBAC.

    The performance of asynchronous fast frequency hopping-multiple access (AFFH-MA) systems with multiple hops per bit is investigated with a linear-combining receiver in Rayleigh fading. We present an accurate approximation method for evaluating the error probability by using the characteristic function, Taylor series, and Gauss-Chebyshev quadrature rule. We will show that the proposed method provides an accurate approximation, compared with a simple Gaussian approximation. The validity of proposed analytic works is verified through Monte Carlo simulations.

    The direct optical switching CDMA radio-on-fiber network is proposed as multiplexing method for radio base stations in microcell/picocell technologies. In this system, aliasing distortions degrade the received signal quality and decreases the number of connectable radio base stations (RBSs) when the encoding rate becomes lower than the twice of bandwidth of RF signal. This paper proposes the optical switching speed reduction method and clarifies that the chaotic spreading sequences can suppress the aliasing distortion without additional processing at the receiver even if the encoding rate becomes lower than the RF signal bandwidth. The effect in switching speed reduction is theoretically investigated and the effect in aliasing distortions suppression is experimentally investigated by using the proposed method.

    The basic carrier sense multi-access control scheme for multicast communications in wireless ad hoc networks suffers from the well know hidden terminal problem. The data packet collision probability is relatively high, and the packet delivery ratio is sensitive to the network topology, nodes distribution and traffic load. In this paper, we generalize the virtual carrier sense collision avoidance approach to reduce packet collisions in multicast communications. The sender and receivers exchange RTS and CTS packets to reserve the channel. When more than one receivers reply with CTS packets, the sender will detect an "expected" collision which may be interpreted as a valid "clear-to-send" signal provided the collision satisfies the given timing requirements. Together with a receiver-initiated local recovery mechanism, the reliability and packet delivery ratio can be improved to close to 100%.

    In this paper, an adaptive resource allocation scheme for video stream based on video stream character and user mobility in wireless LAN is proposed. The proposed adaptive allocation scheme allocates the time slots according to the kind of the real-time or non real-time video stream, the required bit rate of video stream and user's mobility by each user. In the proposed system, when user requests the non real-time video stream and its dwell time is smaller than the service time of the video source, more time slots are allocated to the user. When user requests the non real-time video stream and its dwell time is larger than the service time of the source video, or when user requests the real-time video stream, minimum amount of the required time slots are allocated. The computer simulation results show that the proposed allocation scheme can achieve the better performance than the conventional allocation schemes which allocate the time slots only considering the required bit rate or user's dwell time.

  • The Study of Multichannel Broadcast Mechanism in Supporting Power-Conserving Mobile Stations

    Power saving is an important issue in the mobile computing environment. In this paper, we propose a broadcast mechanism that constructs the broadcast channels according to the access frequency of each type of message in order to save power in mobile stations. The pinwheel scheduling algorithm presented in this paper is used to organize all types of messages in the broadcast channels in the most symmetrical distribution in order to reduce both the tuning and access time. The multichannel broadcast mechanism is also discussed for use when the number of message types increases. The performance of the proposed mechanism is analyzed, and the improvement over existing methods is demonstrated numerically. The results show that the proposed mechanism is capable improving both the tuning and access time due to the presence of skewness in the access distribution among the disseminated messages. When the number of message types increase, both the tuning and access time can be further improved as long as a small number of broadcast channels are added.

  • An Application of Uplink Common Channel to Packet Relay in CDMA Radio Access Networks

    Multihop techniques in CDMA radio access networks, enable dead-spot mobile stations, which cannot communicate with base stations directly, to send data to them via other mobile stations. In this paper, we propose a mechanism for establishing connections and relaying packets between mobile stations. In this mechanism, the mobile stations are connected to one another and relay packets through a random access channel, which is an uplink common channel. In addition, our mechanism satisfies the requirements for applying multihop techniques to third generation radio access networks. Moreover, we also discuss our evaluation of the performance of the mechanism through computer simulations. The results we obtained reveal that it is capable of reducing dead-spot mobile stations and improving throughput with only limited modifications to conventional systems. Furthermore, we propose an adaptive transmission power control to enhance our mechanism and also evaluate this method through computer simulations.

An approach to facilitating service transition based on triggering and providing network detection and selection assistance is being followed in the IEEE 802.21 working group. This paper presents some of the issues and proposed approaches.

    We have proposed a novel spatial filtering technique named "VIrtual Subcarrier Assignment (VISA)" for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signals, which enables the transceiver equipped with an adaptive array antenna (AAA) to selectively receive or reject OFDM signals through coloring them with different virtual subcarrier positions in their frequency spectra. In this paper, we develop the VISA to use multiple virtual subcarrier assignment, which assigns a different combination of multiple virtual subcarrier positions in the frequency spectrum to each OFDM signal. Furthermore, we present two kinds of recursive least square (RLS)-based array weight control methods to support the VISA with multiple subcarrier puncturing in an IEEE802.11a-based system and evaluate the link-level performance in typical indoor wireless environments by computer simulations.

    System capacity of a wireless system can be improved greatly by using variable rate transmission. Assuming a low-rate and wide-coverage signaling-only wireless network, in this paper we evaluate, analytically and numerically, the extent of this improvement for various schemes with variable transmission rates. We considered log-normal shadowing as well as the effect of Rayleigh fading. Simulation results show close proximity with the analytical predictions.

    In wideband code division multiaccess (W-CDMA) uplink, immediate accommodation of high data rate packet causes power control error and makes active users' signal quality deteriorate in a beginning of a frame. To avoid the deterioration, we propose a new radio resource management (RRM) which accommodates high data rate traffic gradually in several frames. The proposed RRM reduces the signal quality deterioration in the beginning of the frame. We also propose an effective power control scheme, where a power increase command is sent to all users before a new high data rate packet is transmitted. Simulation results show that joint utilization of the proposed two methods is effective to keep signal quality good for all users.

  • Development of a Converging Bluetooth Access Point for One-Phone System

    In this paper, we describe a development of a Bluetooth Access Point for the WAN connection of home network devices. Especially, users can access the PSTN at home instead of expensive CDMA network through the AP, using the 'one-phone,' which is the Bluetooth enabled cellular phone. The one-phone service becomes a convergence of wired and wireless communication through the AP.
