    This letter evaluates the performance of an uplink multicarrier-code division multiple access (MC-CDMA) system when the frequency offsets of all users are random variables and the frequency offset for the desired user is compensated. The analysis confirms that performance degradation due to frequency offset is negligible if the estimation error of normalized frequency offset for the desired user is less than 10-1.

  • Support of Efficient Route Discovery in Mobile Ad Hoc Access Networks

    The Public Wireless Local Area Network (PWLAN) is an emerging service for wireless access to the Internet. However, the service coverage of the PWLAN is limited by the deployment of access points (APs) because only those who stay near the AP can access the PWLAN. A feasible way of extending the service coverage of a PWLAN is to deploy mobile ad hoc access networks (MAHANs) so that users who are not in an AP's radio coverage area can send their packets to the AP in a multihop manner. However, in a MAHAN, mobile nodes that intend to access the Internet have to discover routes to the AP first, which may result in considerable bandwidth cost. In this paper, we propose the Appointed BrOadcast (ABO) method to reduce the cost of route discovery in MAHANs. Using the ABO method can achieve this goal on the basis of packet overhearing. Functions that are necessary for network and data link layers to employ the ABO method are also discussed. Simulation results show that using the ABO method can significantly reduce the cost on route discoveries. Due to the widespread use of legacy IEEE 802.11 nodes, the problem of how ABO-enhanced and legacy IEEE 802.11 nodes can coexist in a MAHAN is also discussed.

    With the proliferation of various types of computing and networking resources in ubiquitous computing environments, an architecture allowing mobile users to flexibly access these resources is desirable. We have focused our attention on the access link resources of devices surrounding users. Our framework named Personal Mesh allows personal devices to seamlessly access the Internet via appropriate access links available in a personal area network. The Personal Mesh deals with two technical issues: access link selection management and a PAN mobility support mechanism. In this paper, we describe the design and implementation of Personal Mesh and show the effectiveness of our system by experiment.

  • Coverage Shrinking and Available Data Rate Variations for 3G CDMA Mobile Cellular Systems

    In 3G CDMA mobile communication systems, high data rate services are essential for many key applications. When an MS approaches the cell border, link performance is degraded and more power should be allocated to maintain the link performance. Since the maximum available signal power is limited, the link adaptation mechanism may diminish the data rate to maintain link performance. This implies that the valid coverage shrinks when the data rate increases. The shrinking of valid coverage under a predetermined data rate will strongly impact on the reliability of high data rate services. In this work, the encoded bit error probabilities of 3G CDMA mobile communication systems, over large-scale and large-small-scale fading channels, were analyzed based on SGA and SIGA methods. Analytic methods were also proposed to investigate the issues of coverage shrinking and service data rate variations. Furthermore, the outage probability, cell coverage percentage and the staying probabilities of available data rates were well examined. The proposed analytic methods can be applied, as a preliminary research, to the design of cellular-system-related techniques, such as QoS control, available data rate prediction, power reservation, and service adaptation.

    This paper proposes a new optical access network architecture that differs from those of conventional Point-to-Point (PP) and Passive Optical Networks (PON). The proposed architecture, Optical Switched Access Network (OSAN), uses Optical Switching Modules (OSMs) that connect an Optical Line Terminal (OLT) to Optical Network Units (ONUs) in a virtual point to point configuration so that it offers the merits of both PP and PON while overcoming their demerits. Each OSM optically switches packets of variable length one by one under electrical control. To allow the elimination of optical buffers from OSM, OSAN uses the Multi-Point Control Protocol (MPCP) defined in IEEE 802.3ah. We evaluate the transmission distances between OLT and ONUs, and consider a network synchronization scheme and discovery mechanism that supports MPCP.

    An ad hoc network is formed by a group of mobile hosts communicating over wireless channels. There is no any fixed network interaction and centralized administration. Because a routing protocol needs an efficient medium access control (MAC) protocol to support, to design an efficient MAC protocol is important and fundamental in ad hoc networks. So far, no other MAC protocol has stable broadcast performance in the dense mobile ad hoc network. In this paper, we address the issue of reliable broadcast and stable performance at the MAC layer. We present a reliable and adaptive broadcast MAC protocol RAMAC which is a TDMA-based distributed MAC protocol for the broadcast reservation in mobile ad hoc networks. We divide the area into many grid cells with the support of GPS. We use the properties of grid cells to design an efficient protocol. RAMAC is characterized by five important features: (i) A dynamic frame size is generated in every contention. This dynamic frame size can let RAMAC adapt to the network load. (ii) Our well-designed reservation protocol can avoid the deadlock problem. (iii) When the network is dense, RAMAC can still work stably; however, no other MAC protocols can work well in the dense network. (iv) We propose a reservation protocol that can efficiently and fast reserve data slots. (v) The well-designed grid architecture makes the senders of unicast in a grid cell transmit concurrently as many as possible, so RAMAC is highly parallel in unicast.

    This paper presents a simple, yet effective hybrid of the minimum mean square error (MMSE) multi-user detection (MUD) and successive interference cancellation (SIC) for direct-sequence code division multiple access (DS-CDMA) systems. The proposed hybrid MUD first divides the users into groups, with each group consisting of users with a close power level. The SIC is then used to distinguish users among different groups, while the MMSE MUD is used to detect signals within each group. To further improve the performance impaired by the propagation errors, an information reuse scheme is also addressed, which can be used in conjunction with the hybrid MMSE/SIC MUD to adequately cancel the multiple access interferences (MAIs) so as to attain more accurate detections. Furthermore, the asymptotic multiuser efficiency (AME), a measure to characterize the near-far resistance capability, is also conducted to provide further insights into the new detectors. Furnished simulations, in both additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channels and slow flat Rayleigh fading channels, show that the performances of the proposed hybrid MMSE/SIC detectors, with or without the decision aided scheme, are superior to that of the SIC and, especially, the one with decision aided is close to that of the MMSE MUD but with substantially lower computational complexity.

It also supports time related information, which enables the access control model to accommodate various ubiquitous environments.     An effective access control scheme in CDMA networks is proposed to provide multimedia services. The proposed scheme controls the access of multimedia traffic using the delay of data traffic and the transmission rate control of video traffic. Numerical results show that throughput and delay are improved by allowing delay of data traffic under low and medium traffic conditions, and by decreasing the transmission rate of video traffic under heavy traffic conditions.

    The system under study is a convolutionally coded and orthogonally modulated DS-CDMA system over time-varying frequency-selective Rayleigh fading channels in multiuser environments. Iterative soft demodulation and decoding using the Turbo principle can be applied to such a system to increase the system capacity and performance. To combat multiple access interference (MAI), we incorporate the interference cancellation (IC) and decision-directed channel estimation (CE) in the demodulator. However, both IC and CE are subject to performance degradation due to incorrect decisions. In order to prevent error propagation from the decision feedback, soft interference cancellation and channel estimation assisted demodulation is proposed in this paper. The performance of this strategy is evaluated numerically and proved to be superior to the hard decision-directed approach with a minor increase in complexity.

    This paper proposes a coordinator for workflow management systems (WFMSs). It is a basic module for developing WFMSs. It is also a coordinator to coordinate multiple WFMSs. The coordinator provides functions to facilitate executing workflows and to ensure secure access of workflow information. Facilitating workflow execution is well-known, but ensuring secure access of workflow information is identified as important only recently. Although many models ensure secure workflow information access, they fail to offer the features we need. We thus developed a new model for the control. This paper presents the coordinator its access control model.

    Although the multiuser detection scheme based on Kalman filtering (K-MUD) proposed by Zhang and Wei, is referred to as a "blind" algorithm, in fact it is not really blind because it is conditioned on perfect knowledge of system parameter, power of the desired user. This paper derives an algorithm to estimate the power of the user of interest, and proposes a completely blind multiuser detection. Computer simulations show that the proposed parameter estimation scheme obtains excellent effect, and that the new detection scheme has nearly the same performance as the K-MUD, there is only slight degradation at very low input signal-to-interference ratios (SIR).

    We propose a method of dimensioning and managing the bandwidth of a link on which flows with heterogeneous access-link bandwidths are aggregated. We use a processor-sharing queue model to develop a formula approximating the mean TCP file-transfer time of flows on an access link in such a situation. This only requires the bandwidth of the access link carrying the flows on which we are focusing and the bandwidth and utilization of the aggregation link, each of which is easy to set or measure. We then extend the approximation to handle various factors affecting actual TCP behavior, such as the round-trip time and restrictions other than the access-link bandwidth and the congestion of the aggregation link. To do this, we define the virtual access-link bandwidth as the file-transfer speed of a flow when the utilization of the aggregation link is negligibly small. We apply the virtual access-link bandwidth in our approximation to estimate the TCP performance of a flow with increasing utilization of the aggregation link. This method of estimation is used as the basis for a method of dimensioning the bandwidth of a link such that the TCP performance is maintained, and for a method of managing the bandwidth by comparing the measured link utilization with an estimated threshold indicating degradation of the TCP performance. The accuracy of the estimates produced by our method is estimated through both computer simulation and actual measurement.

  • An Efficient Rate and Power Allocation Algorithm for Multiuser OFDM Systems

    In this paper, we propose an efficient rate and power allocation scheme for multiuser OFDM systems to minimize the total transmit power under the given QoS requirements. We deduce the optimal solution of transmit power minimization problem and develop a suboptimal algorithm with low complexity based on the theoretical analysis. Because of the avoidance of iterative procedure, it is less complex than the existing schemes. The simulation results show that our proposal outperforms the existing schemes and it is very close to the optimal solution.

    We propose a multiple dwell serial search (MDSS) code acquisition for optical code-division multiple-access (O-CDMA) systems and theoretically analyze its performance. The search/lock strategy (SLS) is used as verification scheme for the multiple dwell detector. The operation of SLS is modeled by finite Markov chain to analyze the performance of the proposed system. Effect of system parameters, such as number of users, threshold and mean photon count per chip, on the performance of the proposed system is investigated. The theoretical result shows that the performance of the proposed system is less sensitive to parameter settings than the conventional single dwell serial search (SDSS) code acquisition system is. In addition, the proposed MDSS code acquisition system offers shorter mean acquisition time than that of conventional SDSS system.

    Access selection in future multiple radio access environments is considered in this paper from a new perspective, that of the consumer. A model is proposed for the automatic acquisition of user preferences to assist in access selection decision making. The proposed approach uses a two-level Bayesian C-Metanetwork that models individual user preferences in terms of affordable cost, acceptable level of quality of service and reputation of the access networks. User preferences under different contexts, such as leisure and business, are also considered. The model also adapts to the change of user preferences over time. A simulator has been developed to evaluate the proposed model and the simulation results are promising in terms of the proportion of correct preference predictions after a small number of training samples.

    In order to simultaneously combat both of the inter-carrier interferences (ICIs) and multiple access interferences (MAIs) to achieve reliable performance in multi-carrier code division multiple access (MC-CDMA) systems, this letter proposes a maximum likelihood based scheme for joint frequency offset estimation and multiuser symbol detection. To reduce the computational complexity called for by the joint decision statistic without extra mechanisms, the genetic algorithm (GA) is employed to solve the nonlinear optimization involved. Due to the robustness of the GA, the joint decision statistic can be efficiently solved, and, as shown by furnished simulation results, the proposed approach can offer satisfactory performance in various scenarios.

    This letter deals with our investigations into improving the performance of a wireless uplink system when an orthogonal frequency-division multiple access (OFDMA) is used as an access scheme. To do this, the OFDMA-based uplink system adopts a frequency diversity coupled with a cyclic time shift (CTS) at the transmitter, which is named as the FD-OFDMA system with CTS. It is found that the multi-user FD-OFDMA system equipping with CTS can decrease the probability of destroying the orthogonality among the users and provide the MAI-robust reception without decreasing the bandwidth efficiency of the system.

  • Intra-Cell Allocation Information and Inter-Cell Interference Distribution Based TPC for High-Speed CDMA Packet Radio

    We aim to establish a highly efficient transmitting power control (TPC) scheme suitable for the reverse link of high-speed CDMA packet communication systems. Reservation-based access is assumed to be used for packet transmission in the reverse link. First, we describe a hybrid TPC that we created to cope with average interference changes. The target receiving power in the hybrid TPC is set according to the interference averaged over a comparatively long period of time. We show, using experiments on our high-speed packet communication experimental system, that hybrid TPC can effectively reduce transmission power consumption and PER compared with basic receiving power based TPC. Furthermore, we need to change the transmitting power according to the instantaneous interference to cope with instantaneous interference changes slot by slot. However, in a high-speed packet communication system, the interference level can change dramatically in a very short period of time. The TPC of cdma2000 or W-CDMA cannot efficiently cope with rapidly and greatly changing interference levels. Therefore, we created another two novel TPCs. Interference is divided in these TPCs into intra-cell and inter-cell interference. The supposed inter-cell interference level is changed according to the change in the probability distribution of the inter-cell interference, and the necessary transmitting power for a packet is calculated based on intra-cell allocation information and the supposed inter-cell interference level. Computer simulations show that, with the proposed TPCs, throughput can be increased by more than 200% compared with the type of TPC used in cdma2000 or W-CDMA, and the transmitting power consumption in a mobile host (MH) can also be vastly reduced.
