In this paper, we address the key enabling technologies for long-span WDM transmissions at 40 Gbit/s. Experimental results of 1.28 Tbit/s (32 40 Gbit/s) unrepeatered transmission over 240 km of conventional 80-µm2 NDSF will be reported. Bi-directional pumped distributed Raman amplification has allowed a record unrepeatered WDM transmission distance over this fibre type, without using effective-area-enlarged fibres or remotely pumped EDFAs.

A low-profile bi-directional cavity antenna has been developed for the IMT-2000 indoor base stations. The geometrical relationships required for the design of an antenna with broadband impedance characteristics, which are obtained as a superposition of two resonant modes (M-antenna + metal case), are presented. The approximate equations describing the resonant frequencies associated with the two resonant modes are derived. By using the equations, a cavity antenna with dimensions of 120 mm 120 mm 12 mm and a fractional bandwidth of 18.3% (VSWR <2) that meets the IMT-2000 specification can be designed successfully. The proposed design procedure of the antenna is confirmed by the measurements.

Demand for power in Japan has been increasing year by year, and steep demand is projected during daily peak load periods: particularly in summer, due to growing demand for air conditioning. This has resulted in a large gap between day and night demand for power. The daily and seasonal regularity of this demand gap is placing pressure on power utilities to reduce service costs and create a more dependable power supply. This study demonstrates the feasibility of an energy storage system for load leveling based on the electric double-layer capacitor (EDLC). This device is safer, has a longer service life and needs far less maintenance than the secondary cell. The system works to store surplus energy from a commercial AC line in an EDLC bank during the night, and release this energy for use during the daytime peak load period, using a novel interface circuit. This paper focuses in particular on the working principles and experimental results of the interface circuit, which comprises a voltage control oscillator (VCO), a bi-directional DC/DC converter, a bi- directional inverter, and a coupling inductor. The whole circuit is subjected to PLL control, so that automatic connection between DC from an EDLC bank and AC from a commercial power line may take place in a simpler, more reliable and less costly manner. The system allows for energy transfer on the basis of DC voltage as if electric charging and discharging had taken place in a full DC system.

A hierarchical fault tracing method for VLSIs with bi-directional busses from CAD layout data in the CAD-linked electron beam test system is described. When fault tracing reaches at a cell connected to a bi-directional bus, our method is able to judge the direction of the signal flow, input or output, by using waveforms acquired by an EB tester, in a consistent manner independently of circuit functions as with a previously proposed tracing method for circuits without bi-directional busses.

In-line transceiver chip emitting at 1.3 µm and receiving at 1.55 µm is described regarding the crosstalk occurring between the 1.3-µm laser and the 1.55-µm integrated photodiode. Contribution of optical and electrical crosstalk to the overall crosstalk is measured and discussed. Techniques to overcome the crosstalk are proposed and demonstrated by showing the feasibility of system compatible diplex sensitivities.
