In this letter, we present a joint blind adaptive scheme to suppress inter-block interference and estimate a carrier frequency offset (CFO) in downlink OFDMA systems. The proposed scheme is a combination of a channel shortening method and a CFO estimator, both based on the carrier nulling criterion. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

The single carrier block transmission (SCBT) system has become one of the most popular modulation systems because of its low peak to average power ratio (PAPR). This work proposes precoding design on the transmitter side to retain low PAPR, improve performance, and reduce computational complexity on the receiver side. The system is designed according to the following procedure. First, upper-triangular dirty paper coding (UDPC) is utilized to pre-cancel the interference among multiple streams and provide a one-tap time-domain equalizer for the SCBT system. Next, to solve the problem of the high PAPR of the UDPC precoding system, Tomlinson-Harashima precoding (THP) is developed. Finally, since the UDPC-THP system is degraded by the deep fading channels, the dynamic channel on/off assignment by the maximum capacity algorithm (MCA) and minimum BER algorithm (MBA) is proposed to enhance the bit error rate (BER) performance. Simulation results reveal that the proposed precoding transceiver can provide excellent BER and low PAPR performances for the SCBT system over a multipath fading channel.

In block transmissions, inter-block interference (IBI) due to delayed waves exceeding a cyclic prefix severely limits the performance. To suppress IBI in downlink MC-CDMA systems, this paper proposes a novel channel shortening method using a time-domain equalizer. The proposed method minimizes a cost function related to equalizer output autocorrelations without the transmission of training symbols. We prove that the method can shorten a channel and suppress IBI completely. Simulation results show that the proposed method can significantly suppress IBI using relatively less number of received blocks than a conventional method when the number of users is moderate.

In this letter, an improved channel estimator for MIMO-SCBT systems is proposed. Pilot blocks are constructed using quadriphase complementary sequences (QCSs) which enable both one-sided (OSD) and two-sided (TSD) channel estimation (CE). And OSD-CE and TSD-CE are combined to provide improved performance in frequency-selective fast and slow fading channels and to maintain low-complexity implementations. Simulation results demonstrate the performance merits of the proposed scheme.

This letter derives the packet error rate (PER) in terms of the retry limit and the channel error probability in wireless local area networks (WLANs), when an additional number of retries is allocated to a block of packets to be transmitted. We prove that the lower bound of the PER is the dropping probability which is defined as the probability of any given packet being dropped after its retry limit has been reached.

In this paper, we employ time-reversal space-time block coding (TR-STBC) in single-carrier direct sequence code-division multiple access (DS-CDMA) block transmission in the presence of multiple access interference (MAI) as well as intersymbol interference (ISI), which is subject to fairly long delay spread. We introduce the transmission rate improvement by capitalizing on the assignment of additional spreading codes to each user so as to expand the cardinality of space-time code matrix with no sacrifice of diversity order. Given perfect channel state information at the receiver, a simple linear frequency-domain interference suppression scheme on a basis of symbol-by-symbol processing is developed under certain circumstances. A "turbo principle" receiver is facilitated by exploiting the serially concatenated structure at the transmitter to further enhance system performance. Simulation results justify the efficacy of our proposed system and also present performance comparisons with some existing systems in terms of bit error rate (BER).

A polynomial expansion linear detector (PELD) based turbo receiver is proposed for single-carrier zero-padding block transmission (ZP-SCBT) systems over the single-input single-output (SISO) and multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) frequency selective channels. The performance is compared with the minimum mean square error (MMSE) and match filter (MF) based turbo receivers. It is shown that the PELD-based turbo receiver provides a good trade-off between performance and complexity compared with the other two alternatives.

This paper proposes per-tone equalization methods for single carrier block transmission with cyclic prefix (SC-CP) systems. Minimum mean-square-error (MMSE) based optimum weights of the per-tone equalizers are derived for SISO (single-input single-output), SIMO (single-input multiple-output), and MIMO (multiple-input multiple-output) SC-CP systems. Unlike conventional frequency domain equalization methods, where discrete Fourier transform (DFT) is employed, the per-tone equalizers utilize sliding DFT, which makes it possible to achieve good performance even when the length of the guard interval is shorter than the channel order. Computer simulation results show that the proposed equalizers can significantly improve the bit error rate (BER) performance of the SISO, SIMO, and MIMO SC-CP systems with the insufficient guard interval.
