  • A Suspended Stripline Fed Dual-Polarized Open-Ended Waveguide Subarray with Metal Posts for Phased Array Antennas

    This paper proposes a dual linear-polarized open-ended waveguide subarray designed for use in phased array antennas. The proposed subarray is a one-dimensional linear array that consists of open-ended waveguide antenna elements and suspended stripline feed networks to realize vertical and horizontal polarizations. The antenna includes a novel suspended stripline-to-waveguide transition that combines double- and quad-ridge waveguides to minimize the size of the transition and enhance the port isolation. Metal posts are installed on the waveguide apertures to eliminate scan-blindness. Prototype subarrays are fabricated and tested in an array of 16 subarrays. The experimental tests and numerical simulations indicate that the prototype subarray offers a low reflection coefficient of less than -11.4dB, low cross-polarization of less than -26dB, and antenna efficiency above 69% in the frequency bandwidth of 14%.

  • Design of Multilayer Dual-Band BPF and Diplexer with Zeros Implantation Using Suspended Stripline

    In this paper, a dual-band bandpass filter (BPF) of multilayer suspended stripline (SSL) structure and an SSL diplexer composed of a low-pass filter (LPF) and a high-pass filter (HPF) are proposed. Bandstop structure creating transmission zeros is adopted in the BPF and diplexer, enhancing the signal selectivity of the former and increasing the isolation between the diverting ports of the latter. The dual-band BPF possesses two distinct bandpass structures and a bandstop circuit, all laid on different metallic layers. The metallic layers together with the supporting substrates are vertically stacked up to save the circuit dimension. The LPF and HPF used in the diplexer structure are designed by a quasi-lumped approach, which the LC lumped-elements circuit models are developed to analyze filters' characteristics and to emulate their frequency responses. Half-wavelength resonating slots are employed in the diplexer's structure to increase the isolation between its two signal diverting ports. Experiments are conducted to verify the multilayer dual-band BPF and the diplexer design. Agreements are observed between the simulation and the measurement.

    A low-loss serial power combiner using suspended stripline is described. It consists of novel broadside-coupled directional couplers which have shunt capacitances at the edges of the coupled sections. These additional shunt capacitances compensate for poor directivities of the couplers because of inhomogeneous dielectric in suspended stripline structure. The fabricated three-way power combiner has achieved good performance with insertion loss less than 0.23 dB over a bandwidth of 10% in 2 GHz band.

    We propose a three-dimensional structure on a planar substrate employing micromachining technology. A low-loss suspended structure incorporating a BCB membrane employing deep trench etching technology has been newly proposed. A micromachined suspended line structure using BCB membrane film enables us to realize a low loss planar resonator, which achieved an unloaded quality factor (Q-factor) of more than 280 at 60 GHz. We design low-loss filters and antennas built into silicon in a 60 GHz band. A low-loss filter realizes an insertion loss of 1.0 dB at 60 GHz and a patch antenna obtains a 3% bandwidth. In addition, we demonstrate a 60 GHz receiver front-end IC incorporating the planar filter and the antenna, and obtain good results. These techniques enable us to integrate various functions into a compact package even in millimeter-wave bands.

    This paper proposes a new strategy for reducing contention for a critical section in a multiprocessor system and shows that the strategy can improve CPU utilization by several percent. Using simulation and queueing theory, it also discusses when the strategy is superior to conventional ones.
