This article presents an indoor positioning and communication platform, using fluorescent lights. We set up a practical implementation of a VLC (Visible Light Communication) system in a University building. To finalize this work, it is important that we analyze the properties of the reception signal, especially the length of the data string that can be received at different walking speed. In this paper, we present a model and a series of formulae for analyzing the relationship between positioning signal availability and other important parameters, such as sensor angle, walking speed, data transmission rate, etc. We report a series of real-life experiments using VLC system and compare the results with those generated by the formula. The outcome is an improved design for determination of the reception area with more than 97% accurate signals, and an optimal transmission data length, and transmission rate.

In this paper, we propose a camera calibration method that estimates both intrinsic parameters (perspective and distortion) and extrinsic parameters (rotational and translational). All camera parameters can be determined from one or more images of planar pattern consists of parallelogramatic grid points. As far as the pattern can be visible, the relative relations between camera and patterns are arbitrary. So, we have only to prepare a pattern, and take one or more images changing the relative relation between camera and the pattern, arbitrarily; neither solid object of ground truth nor precise z-stage are required. Moreover, constraint conditions that are imposed on rotational parameters are explicitly satisfied; no intermediate parameter that connected several actual camera parameters are used. Taking account of the conflicting fact that the amount of distortion is small in the neighborhood of the image center, and that small image has poor clues of 3-D information, we adopt iterative procedure. The best parameters are searched changing the size and number of parallelograms selected from grid points. The procedure of the iteration is as follows: The perspective parameters are estimated from the shape of parallelogram by nonlinear optimizations. The rotational parameters are calculated from the shape of parallelogram. The translational parameters are estimated from the size of parallelogram by least squares method. Then, the distortion parameters are estimated using all grid points by least squares method. The computer simulation demonstrates the efficiency of the proposed method. And the results of the implementation using real images are also shown.

A novel analog decoding method using only 90-degree phase shifters is proposed to simplify the decoding method for short-range multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) transmission. In a short-range MIMO transmission, an optimal element spacing that maximizes the channel capacity exists for a given transmit distance between the transmitter and receiver. We focus on the fact that the weight matrix by zero forcing (ZF) at the optimal element spacing can be obtained by using dividers and 90-degree phase shifters because it can be expressed by a unitary matrix. The channel capacity by the proposed method is next derived for the evaluation of the exact limitation of the channel capacity. Moreover, it is shown that an optimal weight when using directional antennas can be expressed by using only dividers, 90-degree phase shifters, and attenuators, regardless of the beam width of the directional antenna. Finally, bit error rate and channel capacity evaluations by both simulation and measurement confirm the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Multi-user MIMO (MU-MIMO) improves the system channel capacity by employing the transmission between a base station and multiple user terminals (UTs). Block Diagonalization (BD) has been proposed in order to realize MU-MIMO broadcast transmission. The BD algorithm cancels inter-user interference by creating the weights so that the channel matrixes for the other users are set to be zero matrixes. However, when the number of transmit antennas is equals to the total number of received antennas, the transmission rate by the BD algorithm is decreased. This paper proposes a new antenna selection method at the UTs to reduce the number of nulls for the other users except an intended user by the BD algorithm. It is verified via bit error rate (BER) evaluation that the proposed method is effective compared to the conventional BD algorithm, especially, when the number of users is increased with a low bit rate. Moreover, this paper evaluates the transmission rate based on IEEE802.11ac standard when considering BD algorithm with ideal user scheduling. Although the number of equivalent receive antenna is only one by the proposed method when the number of antennas at the the UT is two, it is shown that the transmission rate by the proposed method is higher than that by the conventional BD algorithm when the SNR is low even in the condition on user scheduling.

Intruder detection method by utilizing a time variation of Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) channel (MIMO Sensor) has been proposed. Although the channel capacity on the MIMO transmission is severely degraded in time variant channels, we can take advantage of this feature in MIMO Sensor applications. We have already demonstrated the effectiveness of 2×2 MIMO sensor using 2.4GHz band at a small room (Size is 50m2). In this paper, we compare the detection probability of SIMO/MIMO sensors when the number of channel responses are same between SIMO/MIMO sensors: The numbers of transmit and receive antennas are 1 and 4 (SIMO), it is clarified that 2 and 2 (MIMO). The measurement was carried out at the room with the size of 140m2. From the measured results, 2×2 MIMO sensor obtains the same or higher detection probability compared to 4×1 SIMO sensor regardless of the measured location.

Massive MIMO transmission, whose number of antennas is much larger than the number of user terminals, has been attracted much attention as one of key technologies in next-generation mobile communication system because it enables improvement in service area and interference mitigation by simple signal processing. Multi-beam massive MIMO has proposed that utilizes the beam selection with high power in analog part and blind algorithm such as constant modulus algorithm (CMA) which does not need channel state information (CSI) is applied in digital part. Proposed configuration obtains high transmission efficiency. We have evaluated QPSK signals because the CMA basically focuses on the constant amplitude modulation. In this paper, in order to achieve the further higher transmission rate, the amplitude and phase compensation scheme is proposed when using the CMA with amplitude and phase modulation scheme such as QAM. The effectiveness of proposed method is verified by the computer simulation.

This paper proposes Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) based orthogonal beam selection method at the user terminals (UTs) to reduce the number of nulls for the other users except an intended user by the Block Diagonalization (BD) algorithm in multiuser MIMO (MU-MIMO) sytems. The BD algorithm has been proposed in order to realize MU-MIMO broadcast transmission with a realistic signal processing burden. The BD algorithm cancels inter-user interference by creating the weights so that the channel matrixes for the other users are set to be zero matrixes. However, when the number of transmit antennas is equals to the total number of received antennas, the transmission rate by the BD algorithm is decreased. The proposed method realizes the performance improvement compared to the conventional BD algorithm without the burden on the UTs. It is verified via bit error rate (BER) evaluation that the proposed method is effective compared to the conventional BD algorithm and antenna selection method. Moreover, the effectiveness of proposed method is verified by the performance evaluation considering medium access control (MAC) layer in a comparison with the conventional BD algorithm which needs the channel state information (CSI) feedback. Because the proposed method can be easily applied to beamforming without the CSI feedback (implicit beamforming), it is shown that the propose method is effective from a point of view on the transmission efficiency in MU-MIMO system.

In this paper, we propose a precise indoor localization method using visible light communication (VLC) with dual-facing cameras on a smart device (mobile phone, smartphone, or tablet device). This approach can assist the visually impaired with navigation, or provide mobile-robot control. The proposed method is different from conventional techniques in that dual-facing cameras are used to expand the localization area. The smart device is used as the receiver, and light-emitting diodes on the ceiling are used as localization landmarks. These are identified by VLC using a rolling shutter effect of complementary metal-oxide semiconductor image sensors. The front-facing camera captures the direct incident light of the landmarks, while the rear-facing camera captures mirror images of landmarks reflected from the floor face. We formulated the relationship between the poses (position and attitude) of the two cameras and the arrangement of landmarks using tilt detection by the smart device accelerometer. The equations can be analytically solved with a constant processing time, unlike conventional numerical methods, such as least-squares. We conducted a simulation and confirmed that the localization area was 75.6% using the dual-facing cameras, which was 3.8 times larger than that using only the front-facing camera. As a result of the experiment using two landmarks and a tablet device, the localization error in the horizontal direction was less than 98 mm at 90% of the measurement points. Moreover, the error estimation index can be used for appropriate route selection for pedestrians.

The concept of massive multiple input multiple output (MIMO) has recently been proposed. It has been reported that using linear or planar arrays to implement massive MIMO yields narrow beams that can mitigate the interference signal even if interference cancellation techniques such as zero forcing (ZF) are not employed. In this work, we investigate the interference reduction performance achieved by circular array implemented massive MIMO in a real micro cell environment. The channel state information (CSI) is obtained by using a wideband channel sounder with cylindrical 96-element array in the 2-GHz band in an urban area. Circular arrays have much larger beamwidth and sidelobe level than linear arrays. In this paper, when considering the cylindrical array, the interference reduction performance between ZF and maximum ratio combining is compared when one desired user exists in the micro cell while the interference user moves around the adjacent cell. We show that ZF is essential for reducing the interference from the adjacent cell in the circular array based massive MIMO. The required number of antennas in the vertical and horizontal planes for the interference reduction is evaluated, in order to simplify the burden of signal processing for the ZF algorithm in massive MIMO. Because there are elements with low signal to noise power ratio (SNR) when considering cylindrical 96-element array, it is shown that the degradation of the signal to noise plus interference power ratio (SINR) when the number of antennas is reduced is smaller than that by ideal antenna gain reduction with a linear array. Moreover, we show that the appropriate antennas should be selected when a limited number of antennas is assumed, because the dominant waves arrive from certain specific directions.

The need for efficient movement and precise location of robots in intelligent robot control systems within complex buildings is becoming increasingly important. This paper proposes an indoor positioning and communication platform using Fluorescent Light Communication (FLC) employing a newly developed nine-channel receiver, and discusses a new location estimation method using FLC, that involves a simulation model and coordinate calculation formulae. A series of experiments is performed. Distance errors of less than 25 cm are achieved. The enhanced FLC system yields benefits such as greater precision and ease of use.
