  • A Direct Localization Method of Multiple Distributed Sources Based on the Idea of Multiple Signal Classification

    The Localization of distributed sources has attracted significant interest recently. There mainly are two types of localization methods which are able to estimate distributed source positions: two-step methods and direct localization methods. Unfortunately, both fail to exploit the location information and so suffer a loss in localization accuracy. By utilizing the information not used in the above, a direct localization method of multiple distributed sources is proposed in this paper that offers improved location accuracy. We construct a direct localization model of multiple distributed sources and develop a direct localization estimator with the theory of multiple signal classification. The distributed source positions are estimated via a three-dimensional grid search. We also provide Cramer-Rao Bound, computational complexity analysis and Monte Carlo simulations. The simulations demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms the localization methods above in terms of accuracy and resolution.

  • Establishment of Transmission Lines Model of Shielded Twisted-Pair Line

    Crosstalk between lines plays an important role in the transmission of signal. Hence it is of great significance to establish the transmission lines model accurately to evaluate factors affecting crosstalk coupling between lines and to improve the anti-interference capability of the system. As twisted-pair line is widely used for its unique twist structure which improves the anti-interference performance of cables, this paper presents a method of constructing transmission lines model of the shielded twisted-pair line (STP) with two twisted pairs based on S-parameters. Firstly, the transmission lines model of STP with one twisted pair is established. The establishment of distributed capacitance matrix of this model depends on the dielectric constant of insulation layer that surrounds a conductor, but the dielectric constant is often unknown. In this respect, a method to obtain the distributed capacitance matrix based on the S-parameters of this model is proposed. Due to twisting, there is a great deal of variability between the distribution parameters along the length of the STP. As the spatial distribution of conductors in the cross-section of twisted-pair line vary along with the cable length, the distribution parameters matrices also change as they move. The cable is divided into several segments, and the transmission lines model of STP is obtained with the cascade of each segment model. For the STP with two twisted pairs, the crosstalk between pairs is analyzed based on the mixed mode S-parameters. Combined with the transmission lines model of STP with one twisted pair, that of STP with two twisted pairs is obtained. The terminal response voltage can be calculated from the transmission lines model and cable terminal conditions. The validity of the transmission lines model is verified by the consistency between the terminal responses calculated by the model and by the simulated. As the theoretical and simulation results are compatible, the modeling method for the STP with two twisted pairs can be used for the STP with more twisted pairs. In practical engineering application, S-parameters and mixed mode S-parameters can be obtained by testing. That means the transmission lines model of STP can be established based on the test results.

  • Speaker-Independent Audio-Visual Speech Separation Based on Transformer in Multi-Talker Environments

    Speech separation is the task of extracting target speech while suppressing background interference components. In applications like video telephones, visual information about the target speaker is available, which can be leveraged for multi-speaker speech separation. Most previous multi-speaker separation methods are mainly based on convolutional or recurrent neural networks. Recently, Transformer-based Seq2Seq models have achieved state-of-the-art performance in various tasks, such as neural machine translation (NMT), automatic speech recognition (ASR), etc. Transformer has showed an advantage in modeling audio-visual temporal context by multi-head attention blocks through explicitly assigning attention weights. Besides, Transformer doesn't have any recurrent sub-networks, thus supporting parallelization of sequence computation. In this paper, we propose a novel speaker-independent audio-visual speech separation method based on Transformer, which can be flexibly applied to unknown number and identity of speakers. The model receives both audio-visual streams, including noisy spectrogram and speaker lip embeddings, and predicts a complex time-frequency mask for the corresponding target speaker. The model is made up by three main components: audio encoder, visual encoder and Transformer-based mask generator. Two different structures of encoders are investigated and compared, including ResNet-based and Transformer-based. The performance of the proposed method is evaluated in terms of source separation and speech quality metrics. The experimental results on the benchmark GRID dataset show the effectiveness of the method on speaker-independent separation task in multi-talker environments. The model generalizes well to unseen identities of speakers and noise types. Though only trained on 2-speaker mixtures, the model achieves reasonable performance when tested on 2-speaker and 3-speaker mixtures. Besides, the model still shows an advantage compared with previous audio-visual speech separation works.

  • Improved Direction-of-Arrival Estimation for Uncorrelated and Coherent Signals in the Presence of Multipath Propagation

    Recently, Gan and Luo have proposed a direction-of-arrival estimation method for uncorrelated and coherent signals in the presence of multipath propagation [3]. In their method, uncorrelated and coherent signals are distinguished by rotational invariance techniques and the property of the moduli of eigenvalues. However, due to the limitation of finite number of sensors, the pseudo-inverse matrix derived in this method is an approximate one. When the number of sensors is small, the approximation error is large, which adversely affects the property of the moduli of eigenvalues. Consequently, the method in [3] performs poorly in identifying uncorrelated signals under such circumstance. Moreover, in cases of small number of snapshots and low signal to noise ratio, the performance of their method is poor as well. Therefore, in this letter we first study the approximation in [3] and then propose an improved method that performs better in distinguishing between uncorrelated signals and coherent signals and in the aforementioned two cases. The simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed method.

    We investigate the uplink channel selection problem of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-aided data collection system in delay-sensitive sensor networks. In the studied model, the fixed-wing UAV is dispatched to gather sensing information from terrestrial sensor nodes (SNs) and they contend for uplink channels for transmission. With the goal of minimizing the system-wide delay, we formulate a resource allocation problem. Encountered with the challenge that the flight trajectory of UAV is unknown to SNs and the wireless channel is time-varying, we solve the problem by stochastic game approach and further propose a fully distributed channel selection algorithm which is proved to converge to a pure strategy Nash Equilibrium (NE). Simulation results are presented to show that our proposed algorithm has good performance.

  • Wireless Power Transfer in the Radiative Near-Field Using a Novel Reconfigurable Holographic Metasurface Aperture Open Access

    In this letter, we propose a novel wireless power transfer (WPT) scheme in the radiative near-field (Fresnel) region, which based on machine vision and dynamically reconfigurable holographic metasurface aperture capable of focusing power to multiple spots simultaneously without any information feedback. The states of metamaterial elements, formed by tunable meander line resonators, is determined using holographic design principles, in which the interference pattern of reference mode and the desired radiated field pattern leads to the required phase distribution over the surface of the aperture. The three-dimensional position information of mobile point sources is determined by machine visual localization, which can be used to obtain the aperture field. In contrast to the existing research studies, the proposed scheme is not only designed to achieve free multi-focuses, but also with machine vision, low-dimensionality, high transmission efficiency, real-time continuous reconfigurability and so on. The accuracy of the analysis is confirmed using numerical simulation.

  • Improved Neighborhood Based Switching Filter for Protecting the Thin Curves in Arbitrary Direction in Color Images

    Although the classical vector median filter (VMF) has been widely used to suppress the impulse noise in the color image, many thin color curve pixels aligned in arbitrary directions are usually removed out as impulse noise. This serious problem can be solved by the proposed method that can protect the thin curves in arbitrary direction in color image and remove out the impulse noise at the same time. Firstly, samples in the 3x3 filter window are considered to preliminarily detect whether the center pixel is corrupted by impulse noise or not. Then, samples outside a 5x5 filter window are conditionally and partly considered to accurately distinguish the impulse noise and the noise-free pixel. At last, based on the previous outputs, samples on the processed positions in a 3x3 filter window are chosen as the samples of VMF operation to suppress the impulse noise. Extensive experimental results indicate that the proposed algorithm can be used to remove the impulse noise of color image while protecting the thin curves in arbitrary directions.

  • Direction-of-Arrival Estimation Using an Array Covariance Vector and a Reweighted l1 Norm

    We propose a novel sparse representation-based direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation method. In contrast to those that approximate l0-norm minimization by l1-norm minimization, our method designs a reweighted l1 norm to substitute the l0 norm. The capability of the reweighted l1 norm to bridge the gap between the l0- and l1-norm minimization is then justified. In addition, an array covariance vector without redundancy is utilized to extend the aperture. It is proved that the degree of freedom is increased as such. The simulation results show that the proposed method performs much better than l1-type methods when the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is low and when the number of snapshots is small.

  • A Subcarrier-Reference Scheme for Multiuser MISO-OFDMA Systems with Low Probability of Interception

    Recently, Li and Xia proposed a physical-layer security design to guarantee a low probability of interception (LPI) for asynchronous cooperative systems without relying on upper-layer data encryption. The proposed scheme utilizes diagonal unitary codes to perform different encoding in the frequency domain over subcarriers within each OFDM block to randomize the transmitted signals. To build on their idea, in this letter, a subcarrier-reference (SR) transmission scheme is proposed with deliberate signal randomization to achieve LPI in multiuser MISO-OFDMA systems. For each user, one of the allocated subcarriers is chosen by the transmitter to send reference signals, and others are chosen to send the user's information symbols. By some deliberate signal randomization, the eavesdropper cannot detect the transmitted symbols, while the authorized users can operate the system successfully without knowledge of the channels by subcarrier-reference demodulation. Extensive simulations are conducted to demonstrate the scheme's effectiveness.

  • Evaluating “Health Status” for DNS Resolvers

    The Domain Name System (DNS) maps domain names to IP addresses. It is an important infrastructure in the Internet. Recently, DNS has experienced various security threats. DNS resolvers experience the security threats most frequently, since they interact with clients and they are the largest group of domain name servers. In order to eliminate security threats against DNS resolvers, it is essential to improve their “health status”. Since DNS resolvers' owners are not clear which DNS resolvers should be improved and how to improve “health status”, the evaluation of “health status” for DNS resolvers has become vital. In this paper, we emphasize five indicators describing “health status” for DNS resolvers, including security, integrity, availability, speed and stability. We also present nine metrics measuring the indicators. Based on the measurement of the metrics, we present a “health status” evaluation method with factor analysis. To validate our method, we measured and evaluated more than 30,000 DNS resolvers in China and Japan. The results showed that the proposed “health status” evaluation method could describe “health status” well. We also introduce instructions for evaluating a small number of DNS resolvers. And we discuss DNSSEC and its effects on resolution speed. At last, we make suggestions for inspecting and improving “health status” of DNS resolvers.
