In this paper, the closed-form expressions of signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) and the outage probability are derived for a maximal ratio combining (MRC) two-dimensional (2-D)-RAKE receiver with imperfect power control in a frequency-selective Nakagami fading channel. The impact of power control error (PCE) on the performance of the receiver is analyzed for all kinds of fading environments. The results of numerical derivation and simulation indicate that the performance of 2-D-RAKE receivers degrades due to imperfect power control. But when PCE is not serious, increasing the number of antennae and temporal diversity order can compensate for the performance loss. The exact performance improvement due to space-time processing varies with the PCE and the fading environment.

This letter addresses the problem of robust transceiver design for the multiuser multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) downlink where the channel state information at the base station (BS) is imperfect. A stochastic approach which minimizes the expectation of the total mean square error (MSE) of the downlink conditioned on the channel estimates under a total transmit power constraint is adopted. The iterative algorithm reported in [2] is improved to handle the proposed robust optimization problem. Simulation results show that our proposed robust scheme effectively reduces the performance loss due to channel uncertainties and outperforms existing methods, especially when the channel errors of the users are different.

In this letter, we discuss the problem of receive antenna selection in the downlink of multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems with Tomlinson-Harashima precoding (THP), where the number of receivers is assumed equal to that of transmit antennas. Based on the criterion of maximum system sum-capacity, a per-layer receive antenna selection scheme is proposed. This scheme, which selects one receive antenna for each receiver, can well exploit the nonlinear and successive characteristics of THP. Two models are established for the proposed per-layer scheme and the conventional per-user scheme. Both the theoretical analysis and simulation results indicate that the proposed scheme can greatly improve the equivalent channel power gains and the system sum-capacity.

In this letter, we propose an efficient user selection algorithm aiming to select users with less spatially correlation and meet the user number limit of zero-forcing beamforming in downlink multiuser MIMO systems. This algorithm yields a considerable complexity reduction with only a small loss in performance and it only needs partial users' CSI feedback. Coupled with the algorithm, a null space updating method in O(K2) time and a modified proportional fair scheduling algorithm are also proposed.

The exact calculation of the ergodic and outage capacity for Rayleigh fading single-input multiple-output (SIMO) channels in the presence of unequal-power Rayleigh fading interferers is mathematically quite challenging due to the complicated distribution of the capacity. In this paper, a SIMO system with M receive antennas and N interferers is considered. Based on some statistical results, the closed-form upper and lower bound for the ergodic and outage capacity are derived respectively. These bounds are shown to be simple to compute and appear to be quite tight.

In orthogonal frequency-division multiplex access (OFDMA) downlink systems, the carrier-frequency offset (CFO) between the multiple transceivers introduces inter-carrier interference (ICI). In this letter, we propose an iterative precoding scheme to suppress the ICI due to CFO. This scheme is applied at the transmitter, and can jointly cancel the ICI for all the receivers. Moreover, by the studies of the convergence behavior of the iterations, a sufficient condition for the convergence is presented. The theoretical analysis and simulation results both show that this iterative scheme is equivalent to the zero-forcing (ZF) scheme in function, but with much lower complexity.

In this letter, we propose a new modification to the belief propagation (BP) decoding algorithm for Finite-Geometry low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes. The modification is based on introducing feedback into the iterative process, which can break the oscillations of bit log-likelihood ratio (LLR) values. Simulations show that, with a given maximum iteration, the "feedback BP" (FBP) algorithm can achieve better performance than the conventional belief propagation algorithm.

In this paper, a nanopower supply-insensitive complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) unit threshold voltage (Vth) extractor circuit is proposed. It meets the contemporary industry demand for portable devices that operate with very low power consumption and small output sensitivity. An α times Vth (αVth) extractor is also described, in which α varies continuously. Both incremental and decremental αVth voltages are obtained. A post-layout simulation results using HSPICE with CMOS 0.18um process show that the proposed unit Vth extractor consumes 265nW of power given a 1.6V power supply. Sensitivity to temperature is 0.022%/°C ranging from 0°C to 100°C. Sensitivity to supply voltage is 0.027%/V.

A single solid-state magnetic sensor can be used to measure a current by sensing the field near the conductor in a non-contact way. In order to improve the accuracy of the measuring system, magnetic sensor arrays have been introduced in the current measurement around the conductor. An analytical algorithm based on Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT) is presented in this paper, which can separate the effects of the field generated by the current under measurement from the interference fields. A general mathematical model of the interference analysis is set up, which can be used for both DC and AC current measurement and has no restriction on the shape and number of the current conductors. Numerical simulations associated with preliminary experimental results confirm the validity of the approach.

Downlink multiuser MIMO system has attracted considerable attention recently for its potential to increase the system capacity. However, due to the limitation on the number of transmit antennas, when there are more users than can be supported simultaneously in a cell, other multiple access schemes, such as TDMA, must be applied in combination with multiuser MIMO. In this paper, we aim to design practical user scheduling algorithms to maximize the system capacity. Because the brute-force search for optimal user allocation is computationally prohibitive, we propose three low complexity suboptimal scheduling algorithms that offer both low complexity and high performance.

The enormous capacity potential of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) is based on some unrealistic assumptions, such as the complete channel state information (CCSI) at the receiver and Gaussian distributed data. In this paper, in frequency-flat Rayleigh fading environment, we investigate the ergodic capacity of MIMO systems with M-ary phase-shift keying (MPSK) modulation and superimposed pilots for channel estimation. With linear minimum mean square error (LMMSE) channel estimation, the optimal pilots design is presented. For the mathematical tractability, we also derive an easy-computing closed-form lower bound of the channel capacity. Furthermore, the optimal power allocation between the data and pilots is investigated by numerical optimization. It is shown that more power should be devoted to the data in low SNR environments and to the pilots in high SNR environments.

In this paper, the average symbol error probability (SEP) performance of decode-and-forward (DF) relaying mobile-to-mobile (M2M) systems with transmit antenna selection (TAS) over N-Nakagami fading channels is investigated. The moment generating function (MGF) method is used to derive exact SEP expressions, and the analysis is verified via simulation. The optimal power allocation problem is investigated. Performance results are presented which show that the fading coefficient, number of cascaded components, relative geometrical gain, number of antennas, and power allocation parameter have a significant effect on the SEP.

Coordinated multi-point (CoMP) transmission and reception is a promising technique for interference mitigation in cellular systems. The scheduling algorithm for CoMP has a significant impact on the network processing complexity and performance. Performing exhaustive search permits centralized scheduling and thus the optimal global solution; however, it incurs a high level of computational complexity and may be impractical or lead to high cost as well as network instability. In order to provide a more realistic scheduling method while balancing performance and complexity, we propose a low complexity centralized scheduling scheme that adaptively selects users for single-cell transmission or different CoMP scheme transmission to maximize the system weighted sum capacity. We evaluate the computational complexity and system-level simulation performance in this paper. Compared to the optimal scheduling method with exhaustive search, the proposed scheme has a much lower complexity level and achieves near optimal performance.

In this letter, we propose an appealing class of nonbinary quasi-cyclic low-density parity-check (QC-LDPC) cycle codes. The parity-check matrix is carefully designed such that the corresponding generator matrix has some nice properties: 1) systematic, 2) quasi-cyclic, and 3) sparse, which allows a parallel encoding with low complexity. Simulation results show that the performance of the proposed encoding-aware LDPC codes is comparable to that of the progressive-edge-growth (PEG) constructed nonbinary LDPC cycle codes.

In this letter, coordinated power allocation (PA) is investigated for the downlink of a generalized multi-cluster distributed antenna system (DAS). Motivated by practical applications, we assume only the global large-scale channel state information is known at the transmitter. First, an upper bound (UB) for the ergodic sum capacity of the system is derived and used as a simplified optimization target. Then, a coordinated PA scheme is proposed based on Geometric Programming (GP), which is demonstrated to be nearly optimal by Monte Carlo simulations.

Vector precoding is a nonlinear broadcast precoding scheme in the downlink of multi-user MIMO systems which outperforms linear precoding and THP (Tomlinson-Harashima Precoding). This letter discusses the problem of joint receive antenna selection in the multi-user MIMO downlink with vector precoding. Based on random matrix analysis, we derive a simple heuristic selection criterion using singular value decomposition (SVD) and carry out an exhaustive search to determine for each user which receive antenna should be used. Simulation results reveal that receive antenna selection using our proposed criterion obtains the same diversity order as the optimal selection criterion.

Unlike black-box cryptography, an adversary in a white-box security model has full access to the implementation of the cryptographic algorithm. Thus, white-box implementation of cryptographic algorithms is more practical. Nevertheless, in recent years, there is no white-box implementation for public key cryptography. In this paper, we propose the first white-box implementation of the identity-based signature scheme in the IEEE P1363 standard. Our main idea is to hide the private key to multiple lookup tables, so that the private key cannot be leaked during the algorithm executed in the untrusted environment. We prove its security in both black-box and white-box models. We also evaluate the performance of our white-box implementations, in order to demonstrate utility for real-world applications.

In this letter, the performance improvement by the deployment of multiple antennas in cognitive radio systems is studied from a system-level view. The term opportunistic spectrum efficiency (OSE) is defined as the performance metric to evaluate the spectrum opportunities that can actually be exploited by the secondary user (SU). By applying a simple energy combining detector, we show that deploying multiple antennas at the SU transceiver can improve the maximum achievable OSE significantly. Numerical results also reveal that the improvement comes from the reduction of both the detection overhead and the false alarm probability.

The fairness solution without deteriorating the system sum-rate is a challenge under a total energy constraint. One regenerative strategy is proposed to improve the fairness for bi-directional three-node relaying, which is based on decode-and-forward technique with network coding and power optimization. In this letter, the application of network coding decreases the number of transmission phases from traditional four phases to three phases. Moreover, the proposed power optimization algorithm can be applied in practical system, which transforms max-min optimization problem to linear programming (LP) with low complexity. Numerical simulations shows this strategy enhances the minimum of unidirectional transmission rate up to 94% as compared to a four-phase bi-directional strategy, and up to 46% as compared to the three-phase bi-directional strategy with equal-power allocation.

In this study, we developed a new orthogonal partition concept for asymmetric orthogonal arrays and used it for the construction of orthogonal arrays for the first time. Permutation matrices and the Kronecker product were also successfully and skillfully used as our main tools. Hence, a new general iterative construction method for asymmetric orthogonal arrays of high strength was developed, and some new infinite families of orthogonal arrays of strength 3 and several new orthogonal arrays of strength 4, 5, and 6 were obtained.
