This paper reports a novel 3D topology optimization method based on the finite difference time domain (FDTD) method for a dielectric lens antenna. To obtain an optimal lens with smooth boundary, we apply normalized Gaussian networks (NGnet) to 3D topology optimization. Using the proposed method, the dielectric lens with desired radiation characteristics can be designed. As an example of the optimization using the proposed method, the width of the main beam is minimized assuming spatial symmetry. In the optimization, the lens is assumed to be loaded on the aperture of a waveguide slot antenna and is smaller compared with the wavelength. It is shown that the optimized lens has narrower beamwidth of the main beam than that of the conventional lens.

A wideband design of the waveguide short-slot 2-plane coupler with 2×2 input/output ports is designed, fabricated, and evaluated. Using coupling coefficients of complementary propagating modes which are TE11, TE21, and TE30 modes, the flatness of the output amplitudes of 2-plane coupler is improved. The coupler operates from 4.96GHz to 5.27GHz (bandwidth 6.1%) which is wider than the former coupler without considering the complementary propagating mode from 5.04GHz to 5.17GHz (bandwidth 2.5%).

We developed and applied a new circuit, called the “Self-controllable Voltage Level (SVL)” circuit, not only to expand both “write” and “read” stabilities, but also to achieve a low stand-by power and data holding capability in a single low power supply, 90-nm, 2-kbit, six-transistor CMOS SRAM. The SVL circuit can adaptively lower and higher the word-line voltages for a “read” and “write” operation, respectively. It can also adaptively lower and higher the memory cell supply voltages for the “write” and “hold” operations, and “read” operation, respectively. This paper focuses on the “hold” characteristics and the standby power dissipations (PST) of the developed SRAM. The average PST of the developed SRAM is only 0.984µW, namely, 9.57% of that (10.28µW) of the conventional SRAM at a supply voltage (VDD) of 1.0V. The data hold margin of the developed SRAM is 0.1839V and that of the conventional SRAM is 0.343V at the supply voltage of 1.0V. An area overhead of the SVL circuit is only 1.383% of the conventional SRAM.

In this letter, a new semi-blind approach incorporating the bounded nature of communication sources with the distance between the equalizer outputs and the training sequence is proposed. By utilizing the sparsity property of l1-norm cost function, the proposed algorithm can outperform the semi-blind method based on higher-order statistics (HOS) criterion especially for transmitting sources with non-constant modulus. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method shows superior performance over the HOS based semi-blind method and the classical training-based method for QPSK and 16QAM sources equalization. While for 64QAM signal inputs, the proposed algorithm exhibits its superiority in low signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR) conditions compared with the training-based method.

This paper proposes the absorber integrated planar array antenna for a 120-GHz-band close proximity wireless system. It consists of split-ring resonators (SRRs) patterned on a quartz substrate and a plate-laminated-waveguide planar slot array antenna. Precise alignment and multiple reflection between Tx-Rx antenna become severe problem as the carrier frequency increases, such as >100GHz. The absorber integrated planar slot array antenna solves these problems. We designed a SRR unit cell that acts as a millimeter-wave (MMW) absorber, and the simulated S11 of the SRR absorber at 125GHz is -37dB. The use of the SRR absorber on the planar slot antenna suppresses the multiple reflection between Tx and Rx antennas, however the transmission loss between Tx and Rx antennas increases. We changed the conductivity and cell size of 2×3 element SRR unit cells directly above the waveguide slots in order to make them act as an SRR director, and the use of the SRR director improved the transmission loss by 2.7dB. We simulated the transmission characteristics of a close-proximity wireless system using the SRR absorber integrated planar slot antennas. The simulated fluctuation of S21 in the 120-130GHz band is below 2.6dB, and the delayed waves that come from the multiple reflection between Tx and Rx antennas were suppressed.

Densification of mmWave smallcells overlaid on the conventional macro cell is considered to be an essential technology for enhanced mobile broadband services and future IoT applications requiring high data rate e.g. automated driving in 5G communication networks. Taking into account actual measurement mobile traffic data which reveal dynamicity in both time and space, this paper proposes a joint optimization of user association and smallcell base station (BS)'s ON/OFF status. The target is to improve the system's energy efficiency while guaranteeing user's satisfaction measured through e.g. delay tolerance. Numerical analyses are conducted to show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm against dynamic traffic variation.

Finding Pareto-optimal solutions is a basic approach in multi-objective combinatorial optimization. In this paper, we focus on the 0-1 multi-objective knapsack problem, and present an algorithm to enumerate all its Pareto-optimal solutions, which improves upon the method proposed by Bazgan et al. Our algorithm is based on dynamic programming techniques using an efficient data structure called zero-suppressed binary decision diagram (ZDD), which handles a set of combinations compactly. In our algorithm, we utilize ZDDs for storing all the feasible solutions compactly, and pruning inessential partial solutions as quickly as possible. As an output of the algorithm, we can obtain a useful ZDD indexing all the Pareto-optimal solutions. The results of our experiments show that our algorithm is faster than the previous method for various types of three- and four-objective instances, which are difficult problems to solve.

This paper is primarily concerned with the performance of Medium Access Control (MAC) layer plans for Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) in the context of buffer management solutions. We propose a novel buffer management solution that improves the general performance of MAC layer plans, in particular those crafted for WSNs. An analytical model is introduced in order to evaluate the cost of different buffer management solutions. The proposed buffer management solution, Single Queue Multi Priority (SQMP), is compared with well-known Single Queue Single Priority (SQSP) and Multi Queue Multi Priority (MQMP) buffer management solutions. All buffer management solutions are investigated in terms of throughput performance, utilization of the buffer and prioritization capabilities. Despite the relatively good performance of the different buffer management solutions in uncongested networks, the characteristic features of WSNs cause a degradation in the performance. In bursty conditions, SQMP controls and manages this degradation more effectively in comparison with the other two solutions. Simulations based on Omnet++ and Castalia confirm the performance improvements of our buffer management solution.

High energy cost is a big challenge faced by the current data centers, wherein computing energy and cooling energy are main contributors to such cost. Consolidating workload onto fewer servers decreases the computing energy. However, it may result in thermal hotspots which typically consume greater cooling energy. Thus the tradeoff between computing energy decreasing and cooling energy decreasing is necessary for energy saving. In this paper, we propose a minimized-total-energy virtual machine (VM for short) migration model called C2vmMap based on efficient tradeoff between computing and cooling energies, with respect to two relationships: one for between the resource utilization and computing power and the other for among the resource utilization, the inlet and outlet temperatures of servers, and the cooling power. Regarding online resolution of the above model for better scalability, we propose a VM migration algorithm called C2vmMap_heur to decrease the total energy of a data center at run-time. We evaluate C2vmMap_heur under various workload scenarios. The real server experimental results show that C2vmMap_heur reduces up to 40.43% energy compared with the non-migration load balance algorithm. This algorithm saves up to 3x energy compared with the existing VM migration algorithm.

When the automated driving cars are in widespread usage, traffic will coexist with prioritized vehicles (e.g., ambulances, fire trucks, police vehicles) and automated driving cars. Automated driving cars are expected to be safer and lower stress than manual driving vehicles because of passengers paying less attention to driving. However, there are many challenges for automated driving cars to get along with surrounding transport participants. In particular, when an ambulance is driving into an intersection with the red traffic signal, the automated driving car is required to deal with a situation differently from normal traffic situations. In order to continue safe driving, it is necessary to recognize the approach of the ambulance at an earlier time. Possible means of recognizing ambulances include siren sound, rotating red lights and vehicle to vehicle communication. Based on actual traffic data, the authors created a mathematical model of deceleration for giving way and consider the status of suitable behavior by automated driving cars. The authors calculate the detection distance required to take suitable action. The results indicate that there are advantages in vehicle to vehicle communication in detecting ambulances by automated driving cars.

We consider combinatorial online prediction problems and propose a new construction method of efficient algorithms for the problems. One of the previous approaches to the problem is to apply online prediction method, in which two external procedures the projection and the metarounding are assumed to be implemented. In this work, we generalize the projection to multiple projections. As an application of our framework, we show an algorithm for an online job scheduling problem with a single machine with precedence constraints.

Motorcycles are driven in a road widely but must be driven carefully because they are easily damaged by obstacles, bumps or potholes in the road. Thus, motorcycle trajectories are valuable for detecting road abnormalities. The trajectories are usually obtained from GPS (Global Positioning System). However, errors often occur in GPS positioning. In this research, we will present a detection idea of the GPS error based on behavior estimation of riders. Moreover, we will propose a novel behavior estimation method.

An important problem in mathematics and data science, given two or more metric spaces, is obtaining a metric of the product space by aggregating the source metrics using a multivariate function. In 1981, Borsík and Doboš solved the problem, and much progress has subsequently been made in generalizations of the problem. The triangle inequality is a key property for a bivariate function to be a metric. In the metric aggregation, requesting the triangle inequality of the resulting metric imposes the subadditivity on the aggregating function. However, in some applications, such as the image matching, a relaxed notion of the triangle inequality is useful and this relaxation may enlarge the scope of the aggregators to include some natural superadditive functions such as the harmonic mean. This paper examines the aggregation of two semimetrics (i.e. metrics with a relaxed triangle inequality) by the harmonic mean is studied and shows that such aggregation weakly preserves the relaxed triangle inequalities. As an application, the paper presents an alternative simple proof of the relaxed triangle inequality satisfied by the robust Jaccard-Tanimoto set dissimilarity, which was originally shown by Gragera and Suppakitpaisarn in 2016.

This paper addresses joint estimation of the frequency and the direction-of-arrival (DOA), under the relaxed condition that both snapshots in the temporal domain and sensors in the spacial domain are sparsely spaced. Specifically, a novel coprime sparse array allowing a large range for interelement spacings is employed in the proposed joint scheme, which greatly alleviates the conventional array's half-wavelength constraint. Further, by incorporating small-sized DFT spectrum correction with the closed-form robust Chinese Remainder Theorem (CRT), both spectral aliasing and integer phase ambiguity caused by spatio-temporal under-sampling can be removed in an efficient way. As a result, these two parameters can be efficiently estimated by reusing the observation data collected in parallel at different undersampling rates, which remarkably improves the data utilization. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed joint scheme is highly accurate.

This letter addresses the problem of space-time adaptive processing (STAP) for airborne nonuniform linear array (NLA) radar using a generalized sidelobe canceller (GSC). Due to the difficulty of determining the spatial nulls for the NLAs, it is a problem to obtain a valid blocking matrix (BM) of the GSC directly. In order to solve this problem and improve the STAP performance, a BM modification method based on the modified Gram-Schmidt orthogonalization algorithm is proposed. The modified GSC processor can achieve the optimal STAP performance and as well a faster convergence rate than the orthogonal subspace projection method. Numerical simulations validate the effectiveness of the proposed methods.

Both spatial diversity and multihop relaying are considered to be effective methods for mitigating the impact of atmospheric turbulence-induced fading on the performance of free-space optical (FSO) systems. Multihop relaying can significantly reduce the impact of fading by relaying the information over a number of shorter hops. However, it is not feasible or economical to deploy relays in many practical scenarios. Spatial diversity could substantially reduce the fading variance by introducing additional degrees of freedom in the spatial domain. Nevertheless, its superiority is diminished when the fading sub-channels are correlated. In this paper, our aim is to study the fundamental performance limits of spatial diversity suffering from correlated Gamma-Gamma (G-G) fading channels in multihop coherent FSO systems. For the performance analysis, we propose to approximate the sum of correlated G-G random variables (RVs) as a G-G RV, which is then verified by the Kolmogorov-Smirnov (KS) goodness-of-fit statistical test. Performance metrics, including the outage probability and the ergodic capacity, are newly derived in closed-form expressions and thoroughly investigated. Monte-Carlo (M-C) simulations are also performed to validate the analytical results.

In terms of system reliability, data recovery is a crucial capability. The lack of data recovery leads to the permanent loss of valuable data. This paper aims at improving data recovery in flash-based storage devices where extremely poor data recovery is shown. For this, we focus on garbage collection that determines the life span of data which have high possibility of data recovery requests by users. A new garbage collection mechanism with awareness of data recovery is proposed. First, deleted or overwritten data are categorized into shallow invalid data and deep invalid data based on the possibility of data recovery requests. Second, the proposed mechanism selects victim area for reclamation of free space, considering the shallow invalid data that have the high possibility of data recovery requests. Our proposal prohibits more shallow invalid data from being eliminated during garbage collections. The experimental results show that our garbage collection mechanism can improve data recovery with minor performance degradation.

We consider a problem, which we call secure grouping, of dividing a number of parties into some subsets (groups) in the following manner: Each party has to know the other members of his/her group, while he/she may not know anything about how the remaining parties are divided (except for certain public predetermined constraints, such as the number of parties in each group). In this paper, we construct an information-theoretically secure protocol using a deck of physical cards to solve the problem, which is jointly executable by the parties themselves without a trusted third party. Despite the non-triviality and the potential usefulness of the secure grouping, our proposed protocol is fairly simple to describe and execute. Our protocol is based on algebraic properties of conjugate permutations. A key ingredient of our protocol is our new techniques to apply multiplication and inverse operations to hidden permutations (i.e., those encoded by using face-down cards), which would be of independent interest and would have various potential applications.

An equivalent circuit of Yee's cells is proposed for mixed electromagnetic and circuit simulations. Using the equivalent circuit, a mixed electromagnetic and circuit simulator can be developed, in which the electromagnetic field and circuit responses are simultaneously analyzed. Representing the electromagnetic system as a circuit, active and passive device models in a circuit simulator can be used for the mixed simulations without any modifications. Hence, the propose method is very useful for designing various electronic systems. To evaluate the mixed simulations with the equivalent circuit, two implementations with shared or distributed memory computer system are presented. In the numerical examples, we evaluate the performances of the prototype simulators to demonstrate the effectiveness.
