  • Railways and Space -- Their Assurance System

    Assurance improvement is the most challenging task both in railway and space areas, even though their required technologies are different. It can be said that the railways have been achieving the extremely high assurance level through their long history and experience, while the space area has not accumulated enough experience in addition to their requirement of highly advanced technology. As a result, the latter places more emphasis on theoretical analyses for ensuring the assurance. This paper introduces the two different approaches of railway and space areas toward assurance, and compares the two methods.

    Handovers are occasionally required for LEO (Low Earth Orbit) satellite systems, since the satellites are always moving. Handovers, however, generally cause some degradation of communication quality. Some LEO systems have a feature of two types of satellites in terms of the direction of their orbits and the handover between satellites of different types may lead to a large change in the path between the service satellites used for the communication. Thus, the degradation can be generally large especially in the case of handovers between different type satellites. As such, best handover plan should be derived so that the number of handovers should be made smallest to minimize the degradation of the communication quality. In this paper, such optimization problems are formulated in relation to the handovers and their solutions are proposed to actualize the optimization of handover plans for LEO satellite systems with two types of satellites.

  • Assuring Interoperability of Heterogeneous Multi-Agent Systems

    In order for the agent-based applications to be truly autonomous and decentralized, heterogeneous multi-agent systems themselves must communicate and interoperate with each other. To solve the problem, we take a two-step approach. First, message-level interoperability is realized by a gateway agent that interconnects heterogeneous multi-agent systems. Second, higher-level interoperation of conversations, which consist of bi-directional streams of messages, is achieved by dynamically negotiating the interaction protocols. We demonstrate the concept, technique and implementation of integrating multi-agent systems and show how the method improves the assurance of real-world applications in autonomous decentralized systems.

  • Media Synchronization Quality of Reactive Control Schemes

    This paper assesses the media synchronization quality of recovery control schemes from asynchrony, which are referred to as reactive control schemes here, in terms of objective and subjective measures. We deal with four reactive control techniques: skipping, discarding, shortening and extension of output duration, and virtual-time contraction and expansion. We have carried out subjective and objective assessment of the media synchronization quality of nine schemes which consist of combinations of the four techniques. The paper makes a comparison of media synchronization quality among the schemes. It also clarifies the relations between the two kinds of quality measures.

    In this paper, a preprocessing approach to improving the quality of the music on a mobile phone using Enhanced variable rate codec (EVRC) is presented. Our approach works well on music signals considerably reducing the number of time-clipped frames.

    We propose a frequency stabilization system for laser diodes (LDs), in which the electrical feedback loop response can be determined using an on-line genetic algorithm (GA) so as to attain lower LD frequency noise power within the specific Fourier frequency range of interest. At the initial stage of the stabilization, the feedback loop response has been controlled through GA, manipulating the proportional gain, integration time, and derivative time of conventional analog PID controller. Individuals having 12-bit chromosomes encoded by combinations of PID parameters have converged evolutionarily toward an optimal solution providing a suitable feedback loop response. A fitness function has been calculated for each individual in real time based on the power spectral density (PSD) of the frequency noise. The performance of this system has been tested by stabilizing a 50 mW visible LD. Long-term (τ > 0.01 s) frequency stability and its repeatability have been improved.

    The general public is expected to demand in not too distant future instituting more stringent certification procedures for computing parts of traditional and new-generation safety-critical application systems. Such quality-of-service (QoS) certification processes will not and can not rely solely on the testing approach. Design-time guaranteeing of timely service capabilities of various subsystems is an inevitable part of such processes. Although some promising developments in this area have been occurring in recent years, the technological challenges yet to be overcome are enormous. This paper is a summary of the author's perspective on the remaining challenges and promising directions for tackling them.

  • Blind Estimation of Symbol Timing and Carrier Frequency Offset in Time-Varying Multipath Channels for OFDM Systems

    In this paper, a novel algorithm is presented for blind estimation of the symbol timing and frequency offset for OFDM systems. Time-varying frequency-selective Rayleigh fading multipath channel is considered, which is characterized by the power delay profile and time-varying scattering function and has high reliability for real-world mobile environment. The estimators exploit the intrinsic structures of OFDM signals and rely on the second-order moment rather than the probability distribution function of the received signals. They are totally optimum in sense of minimum mean-square-error and can be implemented easily. In addition, we have presented an improved approach which not only preserves the merits of previously proposed method, but also makes the estimation range of the frequency offset cover the entire subcarrier spacing of OFDM signals and the timing estimator be independent of the frequency offset.

  • Performance Evaluation for a New Quasi-Synchronous CDMA System Employing Generalized Orthogonal Sequences

    In this paper, a quasi-synchronous code-division multiple-access (QS-CDMA) is investigated for application in the reverse link of a microcellular or indoor mobile communication environment. In a QS-CDMA system, the relative time delay between the signals of different users is normally restricted within a few chips. Generalized orthogonal (GO) codes added with guard chips are employed as the spreading sequences in this paper and the strict timing error restrictions for BPSK and M-QAM modulation schemes are derived based on the correlation properties of GO code set which determines the multiple access interference (MAI). The results reveal that the system employing GO code set with bigger GO zone can tolerate more serious timing error, and higher order modulation schemes require stricter synchronization. Based on the system model presented, the BER performance for BPSK and M-QAM is evaluated by Gaussian Approximation (GA) and Monte Carlo simulation. The system capacity in terms of acquirable total bit rates are also evaluated, revealing that if system synchronization error is limited within the GO zone, M-QAM scheme can be utilized to improve the system capacity.

  • Question Answering as Abduction: A Feasibility Study at NTCIR QAC1

    This paper presents a Japanese Question Answering (QA) system based on a "Question Answering as Abduction" perspective. This perspective regards QA as the process of abductively explaining why a question is true based on logical contents of appropriately described textual information. This perspective is strongly inspired by Jerry Hobbs et al.'s "Interpretation as Abduction". It is also a simple conceptualization of Harabagiu et al.'s logic based QA system. We reify this concept in our QA system called SAIQA-Is. This system was designed to output only most likely answer candidates to a question. This system was participated in NTCIR QAC1. SAIQA-Is provided very good results in Task 2 and Task 3 of the QAC experiments. This results demonstrated strong feasibility and high potential of our Question Answering as Abduction approach.

  • Effects of Structural Matching and Paraphrasing in Question Answering

    In this paper, we propose an answer seeking algorithm for question answering that integrates structural matching and paraphrasing, and report the results of our empirical evaluation conducted with the aim of examining effects of incorporating those two components. According to the results, the contribution of structural matching and paraphrasing was not so large as expected. Based on error analysis, we conclude that structural matching-based approaches to answer seeking require technologies for (a) coreference resolution, (b) processing of parse forests instead of parse trees, and (c) large-scale acquisition of paraphrase patterns.

  • Effectiveness of Passage-Based Document Retrieval for Short Queries

    Document retrieval is a fundamental but important task for intelligent access to a huge amount of information stored in documents. Although the history of its research is long, it is still a hard task especially in the case that lengthy documents are retrieved with very short queries (a few keywords). For the retrieval of long documents, methods called passage-based document retrieval have proven to be effective. In this paper, we experimentally show that a passage-based method based on window passages is also effective for dealing with short queries on condition that documents are not too short. We employ a method called "density distributions" as a method based on window passages, and compare it with three conventional methods: the simple vector space model, pseudo relevance feedback and latent semantic indexing. We also compare it with a passage-based method based on discourse passages.

    Optical Character Reader (OCR) incorrect recognition is a serious problem when searching for OCR-scanned documents in databases such as digital libraries. In order to reduce costs, this paper proposes fuzzy retrieval methods for English text containing errors in the recognized text without correcting the errors manually. The proposed methods generate multiple search terms for each input query term based on probabilistic automata which reflect both error-occurrence probabilities and character-connection probabilities. Experimental results of test-set retrieval indicate that one of the proposed methods improves the recall rate from 95.96% to 98.15% at the cost of a decrease in precision from 100.00% to 96.01% with 20 expanded search terms.

  • A New Doppler Spread Estimation Using FFT

    In this letter, a novel maximum Doppler spread estimation algorithm for mobile communication systems is proposed. The proposed method uses an average power spectrum of the received signal. The fast Fourier transform (FFT) of received pilot signal, which is related with the maximum Doppler frequency is used for obtaining an instantaneous power spectrum. The proposed algorithm shows a good performance over wide Doppler frequency in low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR<10 dB). Especially, in the proposed method, any other channel information such as SNR is not required.

    Cochannel interference and multipath propagation reduce the performance of mobile communication systems. Multi-input MLSE with whitening processing can mitigate the influence of the interference and provide path diversity gain. In conventional considerations, however, the required complexity rapidly rises with the number of array elements. In this paper, we propose multi-input MLSE that whitens error signals in the signal space by using a multibeam adaptive array. This scheme can reduce the computational load of multi-input MLSE than the conventional type when using a large-element array. The results of an analysis show that the proposed type is equivalent to conventional one in the sense of the metric and provides less computational complexity.

  • 1550 nm Single-Photon Detection for the Demonstration of Unconditionally Secure Fiber-Optic Quantum Key Distribution over 50 km

    The performance of an indium-gallium-arsenide avalanche photodiode serving as a 1550 nm single-photon detector is investigated. Quantum efficiency is evaluated for laser pulses with an average of < 0.015 photons per pulse, which are important for the demonstration of unconditionally secure quantum key distribution [G. Brassard et al.: Phys. Rev. Lett. 85, 6, p.1330 (2000)]. An operating temperature of 243 K is achieved by thermo-electrical cooling, yielding a quantum efficiency of 18% with a dark-count probability per gate of 2.8 10-5. The results obtained here guarantee unconditionally secure fiber-optic quantum key distribution over 50 km.

    Finding DC operating points of nonlinear circuits is an important and difficult task. The Newton-Raphson method adopted in the SPICE-like simulators often fails to converge to a solution. To overcome this convergence problem, homotopy methods have been studied from various viewpoints. For the global convergence of homotopy methods, it is a necessary condition that a given initial solution is the unique solution to the homotopy equation. According to the conventional criterion, such an initial solution, however, is restricted in some very narrow region. In this paper, considering the circuit interpretation of homotopy equations, we prove theorems on the uniqueness of an initial solution for globally convergent homotopy methods. These theorems give new criteria extending the region wherein any desired initial solution satisfies the uniqueness condition.

    Neural networks for Vector Quantization (VQ) such as K-means, Neural-Gas (NG) network and Kohonen's Self-Organizing Map (SOM) have been proposed. K-means, which is a "hard-max" approach, converges very fast. The method, however, devotes itself to local search, and it easily falls into local minima. On the other hand, the NG and SOM methods, which are "soft-max" approaches, are good at the global search ability. Though NG and SOM exhibit better performance in coming close to the optimum than that of K-means, the methods converge slower than K-means. In order to the disadvantages that exist when K-means, NG and SOM are used individually, this paper proposes hybrid methods such as NG-K, SOM-K and SOM-NG. NG-K performs NG adaptation during short period of time early in the learning process, and then the method performs K-means adaptation in the rest of the process. SOM-K and SOM-NG are similar as NG-K. From numerical simulations including an image compression problem, NG-K and SOM-K exhibit better performance than other methods.

    A fast winner search method for VQ based on 2-pixel-merging sum pyramid is proposed in order to reject a codeword at an earlier stage to reduce the computational burden. The necessary search scope of promising codewords is meanwhile narrowed by using sorted real sums. The high search efficiency is confirmed by experimental results.

    We investigate the statistical features of both random- and chaos-based FM timing signals to ascertain their applicability to digital circuits and systems. To achieve such a goal, we consider both the case of single- and two-phase logic and characterize the random variable representing, respectively, the time lag between two subsequent rising edges or between two consecutive zero-crossing points of the modulated timing signal. In particular, we determine its probability density and compute its mean value and variance for cases which are relevant for reducing Electromagnetic emissions. Finally, we address the possible problems of performance degradation in a digital system driven by a modulated timing signal and to cope with this we give some guidelines for the proper choice of the statistical properties of the modulating signals.
