  • Numerical Calculation of the Bessel Function of Complex Order Using the Recurrence Method

    First, the necessity of examining the numerical calculation of the Bessel function Jν(x) of complex order ν is explained. Second, the possibility of the numerical calculation of Jν(x) of arbitrary complex order ν by the use of the recurrence formula is ascertained. The rounding error of Jν(x) calculated by this method is investigated next by means of theory and numerical experiments when the upper limit of recurrence is sufficiently large. As a result, it was known that there is the possibility that the rounding error grows considerably when ν is complex. Counterplans against the growth of the rounding error will be described.

    In the actual sound environmental systems, it seems to be essentially difficult to exactly evaluate a whole probability distribution form of its response fluctuation, owing to various types of natural, social and human factors. We have reported a unified probability density expression in the standard expansion form of Hermite type orthonormal series taking a well-known Gaussian probability density function (abbr. p.d.f.) as the basis for generally evaluating non-Gaussian, non-linear correlation and/or non-stationary properties of the fluctuation phenomenon. However, in the real sound environment, there still remain many actual problems on the necessity of improving the above standard type probability expression for practical use. First, a central point in this paper is focused on how to find a new probabilistic theory of practically evaluating the variety and complexity of the actual random fluctuations, especially through newly introducing an equvivalence transformation toward the standard type probability expression mentioned above in the expansion form of Hermite type orthonormal series. Then, the effectiveness of the proposed theory has been confirmed experimentally too by applying it to the actual problems on the response probability evaluation of various sound insulation systems in an acoustic room.

  • A Compact, High-Efficiency, High-Power DC-DC Converter

    A 10-kW (53V/200A), forced-air-cooled DC-DC converter has been developed for fuel cell systems. This converter uses new high-voltage bipolar-mode static induction transistors (BSIT), a new driving method, a zero-voltage-switched pulse-width-modulation technique, and a new litz wire with low AC resistance. It weighs only 16.5kg, has a volume of 26,000cm3, operates at 40kHz, and has a power conversion efficiency of about 95%. The power loss of this converter is 20% less than that of conventional natural-air-cooled DC-DC converters, and the power density is 3 times as high.

    Circuit design techniques for linearizing adaptively biased differential pairs are described. An emitter-and source-coupled pair is adaptively biased by a squaring circuit to linearize its transconductance, one of whose inputs is divided by resistors. An input signal for a differential pair or a squaring circuit is set to an adequate amplitude by a resistive divider without sacrificing linearity. Therefore, a differential pair is biased by the output current of a squaring circuit and they are coupled directly. There are three design techniques for squaring circuits. One is the transistor-size unbalance technique. Another is the bias offset technique. A third is the multitail technique. The bipolar and MOS squaring circuits discussed in this paper were proposed by the author previously, and consist of transistor-pairs with different transistor size (i.e., the emitter areas or gate W/L values are different), transistor-pairs with the same bias offset, or a multitail cell(i.e., a triple-tail cell or quadritail cell). Several kinds of squaring circuits consisting of such transistor-pairs are applied to produce the quadratic bias currents for compensating the nonlinearity of an emitter-and source-coupled pair. Therefore, four circuits using emitter-coupled pairs with adaptive-biasing current and four circuits using source-coupled pairs with adaptive-biasing current are proposed and analyzed in depth. Furthermore, a circuit configuration for low voltage operation is also introduced and verified with bipolar transistor-arrays on a breadboard.

  • Reverse Modulation Carrier Recovery for Offset QPSK Burst Signals

    This paper describes reverse modulation carrier recovery with a tank-limiter for Offset QPSK (OQPSK) burst signals. Acquisition performance is discussed taking into account hardware implementation errors in the carrier recovery circuit. The results indicate hardware implementation errors cause a significant recovered carrier phase error during BTR (Bit Timing Recovery) of OQPSK burst signals. A phase error reduction technique by modifying the BTR code for OQPSK burst signals is proposed to improve the acquisition performance. Computer simulation and hardware experiments confirmed its improvement. The performance of a prototype OQPSK burst demodulator using the proposed carrier recovery scheme is also presented.

    This paper discusses two approaches to statistical multiplexing: rate envelope multiplexing, allowing resource sharing with small delays for low peak rate connections, and rate sharing, based on the use of large multiplexer buffers to ensure high link utilization for high speed data traffic. We argue that the weighted fair queueing scheduling algorithm provides an efficient means for combining both kinds of multiplexing in the B-ISDN. A feasible implementation known as Virtual Spacing is outlined. We illustrate the flexibility of the proposed scheme by showing how different service categories could be provided.

    A multiple instruction stream-multiple data stream (MIMD) computer is a parallel computer consisting of a large number of identical processing elements. The essential feature that distinguishes one MIMD computer family from another is the interconnection network. In this paper, we are concerned with a representative type of interconnection networks: the hypercube connected network. A family of regular graphs is presented as a possible candidate for the implementation of a distributed system and for fault-tolerant architectures. The symmetry of graphs makes it possible to determine message routing by using a simple distributed algorithm. A candidate having the same property is the hypercube connected network. Arbitrary data permutations are generally accomplished by sorting. For certain classes of permutations, however, this is, for many frequently used permutations in parallel processing such as bit reversal, bit shuffle, bit complement, matrix transpose, butterfly permutations used in FFT algorithms, and segment shuffles, there exist algorithms that are more efficient than the best sorting algorithm. One such class is the bit permute complement (BPC) class of permutations. In this paper, we, first, develop an algorithm to realize an arbitrary BPC permutation in hypercube connected networks. The developed algorithm in hypercube connected networks requires only 1 token memory register in each node. We next evaluate the ability to realize BPC permutations in these networks of an arbitrary size by estimating the number of required routing steps.

    As a first step to develop a system to analyze or recognize patterns contained in mages, it is important to provide a good base representation that can facilitate efficiently the interpretation of such patterns. Since structural features of basic patterns in document images such as characters or tables are horizontal and vertical stroke components, we propose a new expression of document image based on the MCR expression that can express well such features of text and tabular components of an image.

    This paper presents an experimental result of polarimetric detection of objects buried in a sandy ground by a synthetic aperture FM-CW radar. Emphasis is placed on the reduction of surface clutter by the polarimetric radar, which takes account of full polarimetric scattering characteristics. First, the principle of full polarimetric imaging methodology is outlined based on the characteristic polarization states for a specific target together with a polarimetric enhancement factor which discriminates desired and undesired target echo. Then, the polarimetric filtering technique which minimizes a surface reflection is applied to detect a thin metallic plate embedded in a sandy ground, demonstrating the potential capability of reducing surface clutter which leads to an improvement of underground radar performance, and validating the usefulness of FM-CW radar polarimetry.

  • Parameter Adjustment Using Neural-Network-Based Genetic Algorithms for Guaranteed QOS in ATM Networks

    A number of flexible control mechanisms used in buffer management, congestion control and bandwidth allocation have been proposed to improve the performance of ATM networks by introducing parameters, such as threshold, push-out probability and incremental bandwidth size of a virtual path, which are adjustable by network providers. However, it is difficult to adaptively adjust these parameters, since the traffic in ATM networks is further complicated by accommodating various kinds of services. To overcome the problem, we propose in this paper a control scheme based on the genetic algorithms and the neural estimator. The neural estimator forecasts the future QOS values for each candidate parameter set, and the genetic algorithms select the best one to control the real network. An example of buffer management in an ATM switch is examined in this paper. Simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme in adaptively adjusting the parameter set even when the traffic environment and the QOS requirements are dynamically changing.

    Data communication by using TCP/IP is one of important services on ATM networks. At one approach in traffic control of this service, the dedicated bandwidth for data transfer is not guaranteed and the feedback congestion control to prevent cell loss is performed in the congestion case. However, when a large quantity of data is transferred within a short period, this traffic control cannot be expected to achieve high efficiency. In this case, it is suitable that the dedicated bandwidth is guaranteed by FRP (Fast Reservation Protocol) before the data is transferred. This paper describes that FRP is superior to the feedback congestion control for large size data transmission. Next, it proposes a selectable traffic control which selects adaptively one of the feedback congestion control and FRP.

    The recent progress of B-ISDN signaling systems has enabled networks to handle calls which require a wide variety of ATM connection sets. This paper is concerned with the circuit group which handles calls requesting asymmetric forward and backward multi-connections, and has the capability of both bandwidth negotiation and bandwidth reservation as a traffic control for enhancing call blocking performance. A model of the circuit group is first established focusing on the call level characteristics of the group, and then a method based on the reduced load approximation and an approximate analysis of a multirate group is proposed for calculating approximate blocking probabilities. The accuracy of the approximation method is evaluated numerically by comparing with an exact method and simulation. Further the impact of bandwidth negotiation and reservation on call blockings is examined based on numerical examples.

    The Distributed Queue Dual Bus protocol (DQDB) has been adopted as the metropolitan area network (MAN) standard by IEEE802.6 committee. Recently, the unfairness problem in the DQDB protocol, by which head stations benefit, has been pointed out. Although a fair bandwidth distribution among the stations is obtained by adding the so-called bandwidth balancing mechanism into the DQDB protocol (DQDB/BB), the DQDB/BB protocol leaves a portion of the available bandwidth unused, and it takes a considerable amount of time to converge to fair channel assignment. In this study, to overcome the drawbacks in DQDB and DQDB/BB, we introduce a new media access control protocol which is based on assigning each station a level according to some traffic information such as the queueing length, delay time etc. Only the station with the highest level is allowed to transmit. Through the operation of level assignment or the choice of level function, the transmission can be easily controlled in a distributed manner. This protocol is simple compared with DQDB/BB and can be implemented in the DQDB architecture. The simulation results show that the new protocol obtains not only fair throughput regardless of the distance between the stations, but also fair delay performance. In addition, the new protocol can easily provide preempty priority service through level assignment. The new protocol converges to fair distribution of the channel in the time required for only one or two round-trips. This is very fast compared with the DQDB/BB protocol.

  • Performance Evaluation of Routing Schemes in B-ISDN

    We investigated performance of routing schemes in B-ISDN, for heterogeneous traffic flows under various bandwidths. In particular, we compared the simulated performance of these schemes by evaluating their blocking probabilities. To achieve high performance, these schemes use special kinds of routing algorithm, one which is pre-selection algorithm and one which is cyclic algorithm. We investigated the efficiency of the pre-selection algorithm and the robustness of the cyclic algorithm for nonuniform traffic and network resources. We found that these routing algorithm schemes can compensate for errors in resource design.

  • Hybrid Access Control for Broadcast-Based ATM-LANs

    This paper proposes a hybrid access control scheme for broadcast-based ATM-LANs. Broadcast-based ATM-LANs are shared media networks with star topology. In this network, packets are broadcast to all subscriber terminals by a CPYF (Cell COPY Function) node located in the ATM network and only relevant packets are extracted and sent to the destined user layer function by packet filtering functions in the terminals. The simplicity of the packet transfer mechanism makes the network very economical. In broadcast-based ATM-LANs, the hybrid access control scheme is effective in improving performance. In this scheme, short packets and long packets are transmitted respectively by means of a back-pressure type and a CSMA/CD type access control scheme. Throughput evaluation was performed by computer simulation and the results show that the proposed scheme achieves a high throughput characteristic.

    We study the correspondence between problem descriptions and requirements specification documents derived from them. Based on the results of this investigation, a model that integrates the problem space and the requirements specification space is developed. This integration is based on a semantic network representation. We also propose a model of the requirements elicitation process that is consistent with our empirical studies of traceability in requirements documents. In this process, analysts derived requirements specifications from incomplete and ambiguous problem descriptions given by customers, identify missing information, completed it, and then decide the system boundaries that define which part of the problem descriptions to implement as the target system. The model can be used to complete problem descriptions given by customers and determine the system boundaries.

    In this paper, the ATM Mini-Bar System (AMBS) which is a future information providing service infrastructure is proposed. The purpose of AMBS is to provide a multi-media environment in which a user can (1) select and get quickly any needed information, in low cost, at any time, among very large amount of different media information provided by a variety of providers, (2) be charged only for the information which is selected and used, (3) edit or process informations into users' individually requested style or format before using them. The basic concept and configurations of AMBS are also addressed. This system is basically a center-end oriented one-way information providing system. The information center broadcasts its contents to all user equipments based on a user request forecast, and every user equipment stores the delivered contents in its large storage. A user can select one's needed informations from the storage, and may edit or process them within the user equipment. The charge is only on the read informations from the storage, not on all contents in it. The key points of this system are the following three. (A) Introduction of a broadcast (or multicast) media for economical information delivery (exactly speaking, it is a predelivery which means a delivery before request) to user equipments. (B) Introduction of a 1 to 1 communication network for selective charging and control of each user equipments. (C) Introduction of the user equipment storage for Quick response to user information request in most cases with the broadcast (or multicast) information delivery media described above, Separation of information delivery speed and replay speed to increase system flexibility, Local user information processing or editing. As an example of technical solutions, a memory architecture, which is based on hierarchical architecture, is described. AMBS is expected to give some impacts to information industries because it can integrate many kinds of services into the same platform, but some standerdization items are needed to realize it.

  • A New Approach of Parsing and Search Based on the Divide and Conquer Strategy for Continuous Speech Recognition

    In this paper, we report a new approach about parsing and searching problem for a given phonetic lattice. The approach is based on the Divide and Conquer (DC) strategy. By dividing the phonetic lattice, we first construct a PD-tree to represent this lattice, then, we parse through this PD-tree to identify the possible sentence which is supposed to be the speech utterance. Next, we propose a new search scheme called Downward Request (DR) search model to decrease the computation costs, and this search model gives us the optimal or N-best solutions. Experiments performed on Chinese speech recognition show us the good results.

    Next generation personal communication systems will provide a range of different services to moving users. In parallel, packet switching is being proposed as a way to statistical multiplexing and hence to better resource exploitation. The co-existence of different services may prove difficult due to the different requirements on quality of service parameters like packet loss, delay, and so on. This requires a careful design of Call Admission Control policies, which are to be quite different from those used in fixed network, due to two phenomena which are typical of mobile systems, namely co-channel interference and handovers. In this paper we address these complex topics, and propose some basic rules for Call Admission Control policies suitable in this context.

    This paper describes a method for screening psychiatric patients based on a questionnaire consisting of simple yes/no questions regarding to physical, mental conditions and subjective symptoms which is provided at their first visit to the hospital. The analysis of the questionnaire is important to understand patients' background. One hundred filled out questionnaires were utilized for constructing and evaluating a pseude Bayesian classifier which classifies patients into three categories i.e. Schizophrenic, emotional and neurotic disorders with average correct prediction rate of 73.3%. The rate was 16.6% higher than the result given by experienced medical doctors and the method will be a useful mean for automatic screening of the psychiatric patients.
