  • Advanced Photonic Switching Technology for Communications

    With the foreseen growth of communication capacity, further capacity and flexibility enhancements are required for future transport networks. Photonic switching is expected to be a key technology to solve the potential bottleneck, which could be found in transport network nodes. This paper first explains the "Optical Fiber Freeway" concept, as an example of future transport networks. Following this, the possible optical transport network structure using photonic switching technologies, for realizing the Optical Fiber Freeway concept, is explained. An Optical CrossConnect (OXC) and optical Add/Drop Multiplexer (ADM) are key components. Examples of recent development of photonic switching systems toward these targets are also reviewed. An OXC using photonic Space-Division (SD) switching technology has been proposed and demonstrated. This type of OXC will realize flexible reconfiguration and optical hitless switching, and it can meet the introduction of Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) technique. Line failure restoration operation at 2.4Gb/s has been successfully demonstrated. An optical packet network with a slotted ring/bus structure using a wavelength address technique has been proposed as a packet/cell based optical ADM. The experimental system employs a practical media access control system as well as a fast-wavelength switched transmitter suppressing thermally induced wavelength drift. Cell communication at 622Mb/s has been demonstrated with the experimental system. These results show that hardware technologies have been developed steadily. With a future study on an all optical network management scheme, a high capacity and flexible optical network would be realized.

  • Trellis Coded Hybrid 2FSK/4PSK with Expurgated Phase Code

    The performance of trellis coded hybrid frequency and phase shift modulation (TC HFPSK) with the expurgated phase code and the asymmetric signal constellation is investigated by using the minimum squared free Euclidean distance d 2free and the bit error rate (BER). It is found that TC hybrid 2FSK/4PSK with the expurgated phase code shows larger d 2free than the corresponding TC hybrid 2FSK/4PSK with the complete phase code for varying the angle φ that determines the asymmetric signal constellation. The maximum value of d 2free of TC hybrid 2FSK/4PSK with the expurgated phase code can be obtained when the signal constellation is symmetric. The performance of BER is analyzed in additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) and fading channels by using uniform error property and error bound based on transfer function. It is found that the coding gain of TC hybrid 2FSK/4PSK with the expurgated phase code over uncoded hybrid 2FSK/2PSK at BER=10-4 are 2.71dB and 4.74dB in AWGN and fading channels, respectively. The performance improvements of TC hybrid 2FSK/4PSK with the expurgated phase code over TC 8PSK at BER=10-4 are 0.68dB and 4.07dB in AWGN and fading channels, respectively.

  • Variable Baud Rate Fully Digitized Modem for Wireless Communication Systems

    This paper describes a fully digitized modem designed for variable baud rate transmission systems with the aim of efficiently providing multimedia services over a wireless communication network. The concept of a variable baud rate wireless communication system is discussed focusing on the access scheme and channel allocation from the viewpoint of frequency utilization efficiency. For easy system construction, we propose a fully digitized variable baud rate modem based on multirate digital signal processing, taking into account the need for even performance and easy clock control for all transmission rates. We also discuss the operational principle of modulation, the degradation factor in the A/D converter, and the configuration of the clock recovery circuit. Steady modulation performance can be kept by generating the same frequency system clock for all transmission rates and using the sampling rate conversion technique without selecting the channel filter for each transmission rate. It is proved by the analysis of the degradation factor in the A/D converter that only the bandwidth of the channel filter in demodulator should be changed for the transmission rate. A double loop clock recovery configuration capable of both tank-limit type and baseband estimation type clock recovery is shown to be suitable for this system. The tank-limit clock recovery circuits can be constructed easily by employing a tank circuit array. Finally, we present experimental results for a modem having transmission rates of 1.544Mbps and 6.312Mbps for the digital hierarchy and information speed of video signals such as MPEG-1 and MPEG-2. The measured basic performance of the proposed modem shows it delivers superior performance without the need for precise adjustment when a QPSK modulation scheme is employed.

    Various authors have proposed probabilistic extensions of Valiant's PAC (Probably Approximately Correct) learning model in which the target to be learned is a (conditional) probability distribution. In this paper, we improve upon the best known upper bounds on the sample complexity of the parameter estimation part of the learning problem for distributions and stochastic rules over a finite domain with respect to the Kullback-Leibler divergence (KL-devergence). In particular, we improve the upper bound of order O(1/ε2) due to Abe, Takeuchi, and Warmuth to a bound of order O(1/ε). In obtaining our results, we made use of the properties of a specific estimator (slightly modified maximum likelihood estimator) with respect to the KL-divergence, while previously known upper bounds were obtained using the uniform convergence technique.

  • Nonlinear Effect of Direct-Sequence CDMA in Optical Transmission

    The intermodulation distortion (IMD) due to laser diode (LD) nonlinearity of an asynchronous direct-sequence code division multiple access (DS/CDMA) system in optical transmission is analyzed. A third-order polynomial without memory is used to present LD nonlinearity. In DS/CDMA systems, only one harmonic of the third-order inter-modulation term falls on the signal frequency band and influences the system performance. The average distortion is derived with only the information of autocorrelation functions. The results are useful for CDMA system design and performance analysis. With LD nonlinearity it is necessary to select an optimal modulation index that provides a maximum signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). The analytical method is applicable to other general nonlinearities in CDMA systems.

    The superconducting magnet on a maglev vehicle vibrate and heats up inside under the influence of various disturbances in running. We have investigated the characteristics of heating in the superconducting magnet vibrating under the electro-magnetic disturbance from the ground coils. This magnetic disturbance has a frequency component ranging widely from 0 Hz to several hundred Hz which is proportional to the speed of the maglev vehicle. It was revealed that an extreme increase of heat load on the inner vessel of the energized magnet occurred at a particular frequency and it surpassed the capacity of the refrigerator installed in the tank of the superconducting magnet. As a result of the investigation, we could identify broadly three factors of heating, and now we have good prospects of largely suppressing the heating by reducing the disturbance through the folded arrangement of the ground coils and a structural improvement of the magnet.

    A noise cancelling sonar-ranging system based on the adaptive filtering technique, which can automatically adapt itself to the changes in environmental noise-field and improve the passive sonar-ranging/goniometric precision, was introduced by this paper. In the meantime, the software and hardware design principle of the system using high speed VLSI (Very Large Scale Integrated) DSP (Digital Signal Processing) chips, and the practical test results were also presented. In comparison with the traditional ranging system, the system not only enhanced obviously the ranging precision but also possessed some more characteristics such as simple structure, rapid operation, large data-storage volume, easy programming, high reliability and so on.

  • On a Ring of Chaotic Circuits Coupled by Inductors

    In this study, a ring of simple chaotic circuits coupled by inductors is investigated. An extremely simple three-dimensional autonomous circuit is considered as a chaotic subcircuit. By carrying out circuit experiments and computer calculations for two, three or four subcircuits case, various synchronization phenomena of chaos are confirmed to be stably generated. For the three subcircuits case, two different synchronization modes coexist, namely in-phase synchronization mode and three-phase synchronization mode. By investigating Poincar map, we can see that two types of synchronizations bifurcate to quasi-synchronized chaos via different bifurcation route, namely in-phase synchronization undergoes period-doubling route while three-phase synchronization undergoes torus breakdown. Further, we investigate the effect of the values of coupling inductors to bifurcation phenomena of two types of synchronizations.

  • An Efficient Extraction Method for Closed Loops Using a Graph Search Technique

    This letter presents a new method to efficiently extract closed loops as primitive symbols in line drawings. Our method uses a graph search technique for efficiency and exhaustibility, and also incorporates feasibility criteria of symbols. Experiments clearly demonstrated the method's effectiveness.

    A Superconductor-Insulator-Superconductor (SIS) mixer using two junctions connected in parallel through a stripline inductance has been studied. The essential point of the two-junctions device is that the capacitance of the junctions was tuned out by the inductance to obtain a broadband operation without mechanical tuning elements. It has been shown by theoretical analysis that the performance of this type of device is excellent and nearly quantum-limited performance of the mixer can be obtained. It has been demonstrated that the double sideband (DSB) noise temperature of a receiver employing this type of device was less than 40 K over the bandwidth of 90-120 GHz and that the lowest receiver noise temperature of 18 K, which is only 3.2 times as large as the quantum limited photon noise was obtained around 118 GHz. Junctions used in the two-junctions device have significantly larger area, i.e. larger capacitance, and smaller normal resistance than conventional ones. In order to obtain a good impedance match between the source and the junctions, an impedance transformer made of a superconductiong stripline was integrated with the junctions. This type of two-junctions device can easily be scaled to submillimeter frequency without using submicron-sized SIS junctions.

  • Recursive Estimation Technique of Signal from Output Measurement Data in Linear Discrete-Time Systems

    The recursive least-squares filter and fixed-point smoother are designed in linear discrete-time systems. The estimators require the information of the system matrix, the observation vector and the variances of the state and white Gaussian observation noise in the signal generating model. By appropriate choices of the observation vector and the state variables, the state-space model corresponding to the ARMA (autoregressive moving average) model of order (n,m) is introduced. Here,some elements of the system matrix consist of the AR parameters. This paper proposes modified iterative technique to the existing one regarding the estimation of the variance of observation noise based on the estimation methods of ARMA parameters in Refs. [2],[3]. As a result, the system matrix, the ARMA parameters and the variances of the state and observation noise are estimated from the observed value and its sampled autocovariance data of finite number. The input noise variance of the ARMA model is estimated by use of the autocovariance data and the estimates of the AR parameters and one MA parameter.

  • On the Sample Complexity of Consistent Learning with One-Sided Error

    Although consistent learning is sufficient for PAC-learning, it has not been found what strategy makes learning more efficient, especially on the sample complexity, i.e., the number of examples required. For the first step towards this problem, classes that have consistent learning algorithms with one-sided error are considered. A combinatorial quantity called maximal particle sets is introduced, and an upper bound of the sample complexity of consistent learning with one-sided error is obtained in terms of maximal particle sets. For the class of n-dimensional axis-parallel rectangles, one of those classes that are consistently learnable with one-sided error, the cardinality of the maximal particle set is estimated and O(d/ε1/ε log 1/δ) upper bound of the learning algorithm for the class is obtained. This bound improves the bounds due to Blumer et al. and meets the lower bound within a constant factor.

    In this paper we investigate the learnability of relations in Inductive Logic Programming, by using equality theories as background knowledge. We assume that a hypothesis and an observation are respectively a definite program and a set of ground literals. The targets of our learning algorithm are relations. By using equality theories as background knowledge we introduce tree structure into definite programs. The structure enable us to narrow the search space of hypothesis. We give pairs of a hypothesis language and a knowledge language in order to discuss the learnability of relations from the view point of inductive inference and PAC learning.

    This paper describes an innovative heat-pipe cooling technology for asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) switching multichip modules (MCMs) operating with a throughput of 40 Gb/s. Although high-speed ATM link-wires are connected at the top surface of the MCMs, there is no room to cool the MCM by forced air convection, because power and the system clock signal are supplied by connectors on the rear and periphery of the MCM. We therefore chose to attach a cold-plate to the back of each MCM. The condenser part of the heat pipe, which is mounted behind the power supply printed circuit board, is cooled by low-velocity forced air. Total power dissipation is about 30 watts per MCM. With a 2 m/s foreced airflow, the sub-switching-element module (four MCMs) operates at a throughput of 80 Gb/s with a maximum junction temperature of less than 85. Measured thermal resistance between the switch LSI junction and air is about 6/W. This heat-pipe cooling system has a small system footprint, compact hardware, and good cooling capacity.

    This letter presents new estimation algorithm of ARMAX systems which do not always satisfy the strictly positive real (SPR) condition. We show how estimated parameters can converge to their true values based on the overparameterized system. Finally, the results of computer simulation are presented to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

    Wide bandwidth of 30MHz was achieved by 3-IDT SAW resonator filters using 36Y-X LiTaO3 substrates at 800MHz. The filter, which has fractional bandwidth of 3.6%, can be applied for several mobile communication systems. Low insertion loss of 1.7 dB was obtained by taking parallel arranged configuration, which proved to be 0.4 dB better than simple cascade-connected configuration.

  • A Bipolar Very Low-Voltage Multiplier Core Using a Quadritail Cell

    A bipolar low-voltage multiplier core is presented. The proposed low-voltage multiplier core is built from a bipolar quadritail cell. Voltages applied to the individual bases of the transistors in the bipolar quadritail cell are aVxbVy, (a1)Vx(b1)Vy ,aVx(b1)Vy, and (a1)VxbVy, where Vx and Vy are the input signals, and a and b are constants, for example, VxVy, O, Vx, and Vy. Simple input systems using resistive dividers are also described. The dc transfer characteristics were verified on a breadboard using transistor-arrays and discrete components. The dc transfer characteristic of the proposed multiplier core is very close to that of the Gilbert multiplier cell, but the proposed multiplier core is operable on low supply voltage. Therefore, a bipolar multiplier core using a quadritail cell is a low-voltage version of the Gilbert multiplier cell. The proposed bipolar multiplier is practically useful because it can be easily implemented in integrated circuits by utilizing a multiplier core and a resistor-only input system, and it also operates at very lowvoltage. Therefore, the proposed bipolar multipliers are very suitable for low-power operation.

    Program transformation is a kind of optimization techniques for logic programs, which aims at transforming equally a program into an other form by exploiting some properties or information of the program, so as to make the program cheaper to evaluate. In this paper, a new kind of property of logic programs, called reducibility, is exploited in program transformation. A recursive predicate is reducible if the values of some variables in the recursive predicate are independent to the remainder part and can be detached from the predicate after finite times of expansions. After being proved that the semantic notion of reducibility can be replaced by the syntactic notion of disconnectivity of a R-graph, which is a kind of graph model to represent the behavior of formula expansions, an efficient testing and factoring algorithm is proposed. The paper also extends some existed results on compiled formulas of linear sirups, and compares with some related work.
