This paper studies the secrecy outage probability of transmit antenna selection (TAS) with hybrid generalized selection combining (GSC)/selection combining (SC) in amplify and forward (AF)-multiple input multiple output (MIMO) relay system. This paper derives the exact cumulative distribution (CDF) expression of the received signal to noise ratio (SNR) for TAS with hybrid GSC/SC system. Using derived CDF, this work derives the lower bound and asymptotic forms for the hybrid combining system for the secrecy outage probability. Asymptotic results shows that the proposed hybrid system provides the secrecy diversity of product of the number of antennas in the relay node and the number with the smaller number of antennas among the source node and user node. An interesting result is that the secrecy diversity order is independent of the number of combining signals and the number of eavesdroppers.

In this paper, we propose a novel communication scheme that combines reconfigurable intelligent surface with transmitted adaptive space shift keying (RIS-TASSK), where the number of active antennas is not fixed. In each time slot, the desired candidate antenna or antenna combination will be selected from all available antenna combinations for conveying information bits. Besides, an antenna selection method based on channel gains is proposed for RIS-TASSK to improve the bit error rate (BER) performance and decrease the complexity, respectively. By comparing with the RIS-aided transmitted space shift keying and RIS-aided transmitted generalized space shift keying schemes, the simulation and theoretical results show that the proposed scheme has better BER performance and appropriate complexity.

This work investigates the effect of channel estimation error on the average secrecy outage capacity of dual selection in the presence of multiple eavesdroppers. The dual selection selects a transmit antenna of Alice and Bob (i.e., user terminal) which provide the best received signal to noise ratio (SNR) using channel state information from every user terminals. Using Gaussian approximation, this paper obtains the tight analytical expression of the dual selection for the average secrecy outage capacity over channel estimation error and multiple eavesdroppers. Using asymptotic analysis, this work quantifies the high SNR power offset and the high SNR slope for the average secrecy outage capacity at high SNR.

In this paper, we propose a novel user selection scheme based on jointly combining channel gain (CG) and signal to interference plus noise ratio (SINR) to improve the sum-rate as well as to reduce the computation complexity of multi-user massive multi-input multi-output (MU-massive MIMO) downlink transmission through a block diagonalization (BD) precoding technique. By jointly considering CG and SINR based user sets, sum-rate performance improvement can be achieved by selecting higher gain users with better SINR conditions as well as by eliminating the users who cause low sum-rate in the system. Through this approach, the number of possible outcomes for the user selection scheme can be reduced by counting the common users for every pair of user combinations in the selection process since the common users of CG-based and SINR-based sets possess both higher channel gains and better SINR conditions. The common users set offers not only sum-rate performance improvements but also computation complexity reduction in the proposed scheme. It is shown by means of computer simulation experiments that the proposed scheme can increase the sum-rate with lower computation complexity for various numbers of users as compared to conventional schemes requiring the same or less computational complexity.

Joint transmit and receive antenna selection (JTRAS) for transceive spatial modulation (TRSM) is investigated in this paper. A couple of low-complexity and efficient JTRAS algorithms are proposed to improve the reliability of TRSM systems by maximizing the minimum Euclidean distance (ED) among all received signals. Specifically, the QR decomposition based ED-JTRAS achieves near-optimal error performance with a moderate complexity reduction as compared to the optimal ED-JTRAS method. The singular value decomposition based ED-JTRAS achieves sub-optimal error performance with a significant complexity reduction. Simulation results show that the proposed methods remarkably improve the system reliability in both uncorrelated and spatially correlated Rayleigh fading channels, as compared to the conventional norm based JTRAS method.

In this paper, we study the power allocation (PA) scheme design for energy efficiency (EE) maximization with discrete-rate adaptive modulation (AM) in the downlink distributed antenna system (DAS). By means of the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) conditions, an optimal PA scheme with closed-form expression is derived for maximizing the EE subject to maximum transmit power and target bit error rate (BER) constraints, where the number of active transmit antennas is also derived for attaining PA coefficients. Considering that the optimal scheme needs to calculate the PA of all transmit antennas for each modulation mode, its complexity is extremely high. For this reason, a low-complexity suboptimal PA is also presented based on the antenna selection method. By choosing one or two remote antennas, the suboptimal scheme offers lower complexity than the optimal one, and has almost the same EE performance as the latter. Besides, the outage probability is derived in a performance evaluation. Computer simulation shows that the developed optimal scheme can achieve the same EE as the exhaustive search based approach, which has much higher complexity, and the suboptimal scheme almost matches the EE of the optimal one as well. The suboptimal scheme with two-antenna selection is particularly effective in terms of balancing performance and complexity. Moreover, the derived outage probability is in good agreement with the corresponding simulation.

Multiuser MIMO (MU-MIMO) improves the system channel capacity by generating a large virtual MIMO channel between a base station and multiple user terminals (UTs) with effective utilization of wireless resources. Block beamforming algorithms such as Block Diagonalization (BD) and Block Maximum Signal-to-Noise ratio (BMSN) have been proposed in order to realize MU-MIMO broadcast transmission. The BD algorithm cancels inter-user interference (IUI) by creating the weights so that the channel matrices for the other users are set to be zero matrices. The BMSN algorithm has a function of maintaining a high gain response for each desired user in addition to IUI cancellation. Therefore, the BMSN algorithm generally outperforms the BD algorithm. However, when the number of transmit antennas is equal to the total number of receive antennas, the transmission rate by both BD and BMSN algorithms is decreased. This is because the eigenvalues of channel matrices are too small to support data transmission. To resolve the issue, this paper focuses on an antenna selection (AS) method at the UTs. The AS method reduces the number of pattern nulls for the other users except an intended user in the BD and BMSN algorithms. It is verified via bit error rate (BER) evaluation that the AS method is effective in the BD and BMSN algorithms, especially, when the number of user antennas with a low bit rate (i.e., low signal-to-noise power ratio) is increased. Moreover, this paper evaluates the achievable bit rate and throughput including an actual channel state information feedback based on IEEE802.11ac standard. Although the number of equivalent receive antenna is reduced to only one by the AS method when the number of antennas at the UT is two, it is shown that the throughputs by BD and BMSN with the AS method (BD-AS and BMSN-AS) are higher than those by the conventional BD and BMSN algorithms.

This paper proposes a hardware configuration for uplink multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) transmissions in a distributed antenna system (DAS). The demand for high-speed transmission in the uplink has increased recently, because of which standardizations in LTE-advanced and IEEE 802.11ax networks is currently underway. User terminal (UT) scheduling on the downlink MU-MIMO transmission is easy even in unlicensed band such as those in wireless local area network (WLAN) systems. However, the detailed management of the UTs is difficult on the uplink MU-MIMO transmissions because of the decentralized wireless access control. The proposed configuration allows an antenna to be selected from an external device on the access point (AP). All AP antennas are divided into groups, and the received signal in each group is input to the amplitude detector via a directional coupler. Subsequently, the selected antenna is fed by a multiple-to-one switch instead of a matrix switch. To clarify the effectiveness of the proposed configuration, we conduct computer simulations based on the ray-tracing method for propagation channels in an indoor environment.

This paper proposes a novel method of reducing channel state information (CSI) feedback by using transmit antenna selection for downlink multiuser multiple input multiple output (DL-MU-MIMO) transmission in dense distributed antenna systems. It is widely known that DL-MU-MIMO transmission achieves higher total bit-rate by mitigating inter-user interference based on pre-coding techniques. The pre-coding techniques require CSI between access point (AP) and multiple users. However, overhead for CSI acquisition degrades the transmission efficiency of DL-MU-MIMO transmission. In the proposed CSI feedback reduction method, AP first selects the antenna set that maximizes the received power at each user, second it skips the sequence of CSI feedback for users whose signal to interference power ratio is larger than a threshold, and finally it performs DL-MU-MIMO transmission to multiple users by using the selected antenna set. To clarify the proposed method, we evaluate it by computer simulations in an indoor scenario. The results show that the proposed method can offer higher transmission efficiency than the conventional DL-MU-MIMO transmission with the usual CSI feedback method.

This paper investigates the performance of an overloaded multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) - orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system with and without antenna selection. In the overloaded MIMO-OFDM system, even if only a small amount of feedback is available, performance can be improved by selecting the transmit antennas. Thus, this paper compares the performance of an overloaded MIMO system with and without antenna selection under different code rates. It is shown that the performance of the MIMO-OFDM system for six signal streams with QPSK modulation is about 2.0dB better than that for three signal streams with 16QAM modulation while it is about 5.0dB better than that of the MIMO-OFDM system for two signal streams with 64QAM modulation at a bit error rate (BER) of 10-3. However, it is also shown that the performance of the overloaded MIMO system is worse if the code rate of the repetition code increases.

In this paper, we propose and analyze the opportunistic amplify-and-forward (AF) relaying scheme using antenna selection in conjunction with different adaptive transmission techniques over Rayleigh fading channels. In this scheme, the best antenna of a source and the best relay are selected for communication between the source and destination. Closed-form expressions for the outage probability and average symbol error rate (SER) are derived to confirm that increasing the number of antennas is the best option as compared with increasing the number of relays. We also obtain closed-form expressions for the average channel capacity under three different adaptive transmission techniques: 1) optimal power and rate adaptation; 2) constant power with optimal rate adaptation; and 3) channel inversion with a fixed rate. The channel capacity performance of the considered adaptive transmission techniques is evaluated and compared with a different number of relays and various antennas configurations for each adaptive technique. Our derived analytical results are verified through extensive Monte Carlo simulations.

In this paper, the average symbol error probability (SEP) performance of decode-and-forward (DF) relaying mobile-to-mobile (M2M) systems with transmit antenna selection (TAS) over N-Nakagami fading channels is investigated. The moment generating function (MGF) method is used to derive exact SEP expressions, and the analysis is verified via simulation. The optimal power allocation problem is investigated. Performance results are presented which show that the fading coefficient, number of cascaded components, relative geometrical gain, number of antennas, and power allocation parameter have a significant effect on the SEP.

Multi-user MIMO (MU-MIMO) improves the system channel capacity by employing the transmission between a base station and multiple user terminals (UTs). Block Diagonalization (BD) has been proposed in order to realize MU-MIMO broadcast transmission. The BD algorithm cancels inter-user interference by creating the weights so that the channel matrixes for the other users are set to be zero matrixes. However, when the number of transmit antennas is equals to the total number of received antennas, the transmission rate by the BD algorithm is decreased. This paper proposes a new antenna selection method at the UTs to reduce the number of nulls for the other users except an intended user by the BD algorithm. It is verified via bit error rate (BER) evaluation that the proposed method is effective compared to the conventional BD algorithm, especially, when the number of users is increased with a low bit rate. Moreover, this paper evaluates the transmission rate based on IEEE802.11ac standard when considering BD algorithm with ideal user scheduling. Although the number of equivalent receive antenna is only one by the proposed method when the number of antennas at the the UT is two, it is shown that the transmission rate by the proposed method is higher than that by the conventional BD algorithm when the SNR is low even in the condition on user scheduling.

In this paper, a practical antenna selection (AS) scheme is investigated for downlink multiuser massive multiple input multiple output (MIMO) networks where a base station (BS) is equipped with many antennas (N) and communicates with K mobile stations (MSs) simultaneously. In the proposed antenna selection technique, S antennas (S≤N) are selected for transmission based on the knowledge of channel coefficients of each MS for reducing the number of RF chains which mainly induce cost increase in terms of size, hardware, and power. In the proposed AS technique, a BS first ranks antenna elements according to the sum of their channel gains to all MSs. Then, the BS computes the downlink sum-rate with S consecutive antenna elements in the ordered set, where the subset consisting of S consecutive antennas is called a window. The BS selects the window resulting in the highest sum-rate. The selected S antenna elements are used for transmitting signals to multiple users, while the remaining (N-S) antenna elements are turned off for the time slot. Therefore, the proposed AS technique requires only (N-S+1) sum-rate computations, while the optimal AS technique involves $inom{N}{S}$ computations. We analyze downlink sum-rate with the proposed AS technique and compare it with that of a reference system with the same number of antenna elements without AS. Our results show that the proposed AS technique significantly outperforms the reference scheme.

In this letter, a fast transmit antenna selection algorithm is proposed for the spatial-temporal combining-based spatial multiplexing ultra-wideband systems on a log-normal multipath fading channel. The presented suboptimum algorithm selects the transmit antennas associated with the largest signal to noise ratio value computed by one QR decomposition operation of the full channel matrix spatially and temporally combined. It performs the iterative channel scaling operation about the channel matrix and singular value decomposition about the channel scaled matrix. It is shown that the proposed antenna selection algorithm leads to a substantial improvement in the error performance while keeping low-complexity, and obtains almost the same error performance as the exhaustive search-based optimal antenna selection algorithm.

We derive a closed-form expression for the outage probability (OP), which is an important performance metric used to measure the probability that the target error rate performance of wireless systems exceeds a specified value, of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) amplify-and-forward (AF) relaying systems with best antenna selection under independent, but not necessarily identical distributed Nakagami-m fading. To gain further insights on the performance, the asymptotic approximation for OP, which reveals the diversity gain, is presented. We show that the diversity gain is solely determined by the fading severity parameters and increases with number of antennas at all nodes.

The employed antenna selection criterion is to utilize the largest minimum post-detection SNR value. It is shown via simulations that the antenna selection significantly enhances the BER performance of the SQRD-based SM UWB systems on a log-normal multipath fading channel.
