  • Identification of a Class of Time-Varying Nonlinear System Based on the Wiener Model with Application to Automotive Engineering

    We consider the identification of a class of systems which are both time-varying and nonlinear. Time-varying nonlinear systems are often encountered in practice, but tend to be avoided due to the difficulties that arise in modelling and estimation. We study a particular time-varying polynomial model, which is a member of the class of time-varying Wiener models. The model can characterise both time-variation and nonlinearity in a straightforward manner, without requiring an excessively large number of coefficients. We formulate a procedure to find least-squares estimates of the model coefficients. An advantage of the approach is that systems with rapidly changing dynamics can be characterised. In addition, we do not require that the input is stationary or Gaussian. The approach is validated with an application to an automobile modelling problem, where a time-varying nonlinear model is seen to more accurately characterise the system than a time-invariant nonlinear one.

  • Reconstructing Data Flow Diagrams from Structure Charts Based on the Input and Output Relationship

    The traceability of data flow diagrams against structure charts is very important for large software development. Specifying if there is a relationship between a data flow diagram and a structure chart is a time consuming task. Existing CASE tools provide a way to maintain traceability. If we can extract the input-output relationship of a system from a structure chart, the corresponding data flow diagram can be automatically generated from the relationship. For example, Benedusi et al. proposed a reverse engineering methodology to reconstruct a data flow diagram from existing code. The methodology develops a hierarchical data flow diagram from dependency relationships between the program variables. The methodology, however, transforms each module in structure charts into a process in data flow diagrams. The reconstructed diagrams may have different processes with the same name. This paper proposes a transformation algorithm that solves these problems. It analyzes the structure charts and extracts the input and ouput relationships, then determines how the set of outputs depends on the set of inputs for the data flow diagram process. After that, it produces a data flow diagram based on the include operation between the sets of output items. The major characteristics of the algorithm are that it is simple, because it only uses the basic operations of sets, it generates data flow diagrams with deterministic steps, and it can generate minimal data flow diagrams. This process will reduce the cost of traceability between data flow diagrams and structure charts.

  • A New Concept of Network Dimensioning Based on Quality and Profit

    We propose a new concept of network dimensioning, which is based not only on the grade of service but also on profit. In traditional network dimensioning methodology, the number of circuits on links is designed under a cost-minimization concept with grade of service constraints. Recently, telecommunication markets have become very large and competitive; therefore, we believe that a profit viewpoint is now essential. However, it is difficult to calculate profit in almost all the dimensioning methods currently used, because they mainly employ peak-hour traffic data, while profit depends on all the hourly traffic data which contain both peak and off-peak data. In this paper, we propose using all the hourly traffic data in network dimensioning. From these data and telephone charges for each hour, revenues will be estimated. On the other hand, facility costs will be estimated from the number of circuits. Finally, we can estimate profit from the difference between revenues and facility costs. Focusing on both quality and profits in network dimensioning leads to more advanced quality management and quality control in telecommunications networks than with traditional methodology. This paper outlines a dimensioning method based on profit, and describes its properties, some applications of it, and summarizes further studies.

  • Automated Synthesis of Protocol Specifications from Service Specifications with Parallelly Executable Multiple Primitives

    In the conventional protocol synthesis, it is generally assumed that primitives in service specifications cannot be executed simultaneously at different Service Access Points (SAPs). Thus if some primitives are executed concurrently, then protocol errors of unspecified receptions occur. In this paper, we try to extend a class of service specifications from which protocol specifications are synthesized by the previous methods. We first introduce priorities into primitives in protocol specification so that it always selects exactly one primitive of the highest priority from a set of primitives that can be executed simultaneously, and executes it. Then, based on this execution ordering, we propose a new protocol synthesis method which can avoid protocol errors due to message collisions, communication competitions and so on. By applying the proposed synthesis method, we can automatically synthesize a protocol specifications from a given service specification which includes an arbitraty number of processes and allows parallel execution of primitives.

  • Biological Effects of ELF Electric Fields--Historical Review on Bioengineering Studies in Japan--

    The studies on the biological effects of ELF electric fields conducted in Japan are reviewed. Among international studies, they are characterized as the studies from the viewpoint of bioengineering. In early studies, the safety standard of high voltage transmission lines was determined by a distinct biological effect, i.e., the sensation of the spark discharge caused by electrostatic induction. In numerical analysis, the field coupling to both animal and human bodies became well understood. Some new measurement techniques were developed which enabled us to evaluate the field exposure on a human body. A system was developed to realize the chronic exposure of an electric field on mice and cats. An optical telemetry technique was developed to measure the physiological response of an animal when it was exposed to an electric field. An ion-current shuttle box was developed to investigate the behavioral change of a rat when it was exposed to an ion-current as well as an electric field. In animal experiments, a mechanism of sensing the field was investigated. The cause of the seasonal change of field sensitivity was found. In cases of chronic exposure, suppression of growth was suspected. In shuttle box studies, an avoidance behavior from an ion-current was quantified. To find whether there are any adverse or beneficial effects of the field exposure on human beings, further study is required to clarify the mechanisms of the biological effects.

  • Improvement of "Soft Breakdown" Leakage of off-State nMOSFETs Induced by HBM ESD Events Using Drain Engineering for LDD Structure

    Leakage enhancement after an ESD event has been analyzed for output buffer LDD MOSFETs. The HBM ESD failure threshold for the LDD MOSFETs is only 200-300 V and the failure is the leakage enhancement of the off-state MOSFETs called as "soft breakdown" leakage. This leakage enhancement is supposed to be caused by trapped electrons in the gate oxide and/or creation of interface states at the gate overlapped drain region due to snap-back stress during the ESD event. The mechanism of the lekage can be explained by band-to-band and/or interface state-to-band tunneling of electrons. The improvement of the HBM ESD threshold has been also evaluated by using two types of drain engineering which are additional arsenic implantation for the output LDD MOSFETs and "offset" gate MOSFET as a protection circuit for the output pins. By using these drain engineering, the threshold can be improved to more than 2000 V.

    Automotive electronics technology has become extremely advanced in the regions of automotive engine control, anti-skid brake control, and others. These control systems require highly advanced control performance and high speed microprocessors which can rapidly execute interrupt processing. Automotive engine control systems are now widely utilized in cars with high speed, high power engines. At present, it is generally acknowledged that such high performance engine control for the 10,000 rpm, 12 cylinder engines requires three or more conventional microprocessors. We fabricated an engine control system prototype incorporating the data-driven processor under development, which was installed in an actual automobile. In this paper, the characteristics of the engine control program and simulation results are firstly discussed. Secondly, the structure of the engine control system prototype and the control performance applied to the actual automobile are shown. Finally, from the results of software simulation and the installation of the engine control system prototype with the data-driven processor, we conclude that a single chip data-driven microprocessor can control a high speed, high power, 10,000 rpm, 12 cylinder automobile engine.

    With the evolution of semiconductor technology, automotive electronics has made tremendous progress. The aim of automotive electronics is to improve the basic automotive functions of vehicles (running, turning, and stopping) from the standpoint of environmental protection, energy conservation, and transportation efficiency. This paper introduces the process of automotive electronics with an emphasis on major control systems such as engines and brakes. The role of ASICs in automotive control systems is also presented with actual examples of ASICs that are used in these systems.

  • Synthesis of Protocol Specifications for Design of Responsive Protocols

    Responsive protocols are communication protocols which ensure timely and reliable recovery when error events occur. Protocol synthesis for design of responsive protocols is to derive a protocol specification based on a service specification. In the previous methods, if the service specification includes simultaneous transmission of primitives from a high layer to a low layer through different service access points, then the derived protocol specification includes protocol errors of unspecified reception caused by message collisions. Also, they only includes a recovery function such as retransmission of messages. This is not enough for recovery from abnormal states due to coordination loss. This paper extends a class of derived protocol specifications to include message collisions which usually occur in real communication protocols. Furthermore, this paper proposes a new method for synthesis of a responsive protocal specification derived from a service specification such that the derived protocol specification is free from protocol erros of unspecified receptions caused by message collisions and includes two recovery functions: message retransmission and checkpoint restart functions.

  • PDM: Petri Net Based Development Methodology for Distributed Systems

    This article discusses on PDM (Petri net based Development Methodology) which integrates approaches, modeling methods, design methods and analysis methods in a coherent manner. Although various development techniques based on Petri nets have demonstrated advantages over conventional techniques, those techniques are rather ad hoc and lack an overall picture on entire development process. PDM anticipates to provide a refernce process model to develop distributed systems with various Petri net based development methods. Behavioral properties of distrbuted systems can be an appropriate application domain of PDM.

    A specification formalism for business application software is presented. Our approach is to investigate specification documents which are actually used in development projects of business applications in banking, insurance, and government systems. Since the specification documents are prepared mainly for users' review for the developing software, the representation of the documents is designed to be easy to understand for users, only in business terminology without losing a certain level of formality. Also, to avoid redundancy of the specification, there are some implicit assumptions in the specification. We have analyzed some commonality of these assumptions hidden in specification documents and are trying to construct a language by formalizing the underlying system model.

    The introduction of Integrated Services Digital Networks (ISDNs) poses a variety of new questions on telecommunications network design and planning. Furthermore, the formulation of traditional network design and planning problems need to be revisited in the ISDN context. This paper presents an overview of the recent progress and new challenges in developing ISDN design and planning methodologies that exploit revolutionary new telecommunications technologies. It will cover some important issues for ISDN design and planning, and will concentrate on three issues that are of particular importance: Design of networks with digital information transfer capabilities, design of networks with advanced network/traffic control techniques, and use of reliability objectives for network design and planning.

    A new model for a computer simulation of RF capacitive type hyperthermia has been developed by taking account of the following points. Blood flow is usually determined by many physiological parameters, but is regarded as a function of only blood temperature under some conditions. The temperature dependence of blood flow of tumors and normal tissues is assumed by referring the data obtained by Song et al. and Tanaka. The blood temperature which is elevated by externally applied power significantly affects temperatures of the body and the tumors. The transport of heat from the body surface is studied by considering air convection. These points are examined by experiments on a computer with simple phantom models and real patients. The results of simulation on the patient have shown a good agreement with clinical inspection based on CT images and a temperature of the stomach.
