    A reconfigurable broadband linear power amplifier (PA) for long-range WLAN applications fabricated in a 180nm RF CMOS process is presented here. The proposed reconfigurable in/output matching network provides the PA with broadband capability at the two center frequencies of 0.5GHz and 0.85GHz. The output matching network is realized by a switchable transformer which shows maximum peak passive efficiencies of 65.03% and 73.45% at 0.45GHz and 0.725GHz, respectively. With continuous wave sources, a 1-dB bandwidth (BW1-dB) according to saturated output power is 0.4-1.2GHz, where it shows a minimum output power with a power added efficiency (PAE) of 25.62dBm at 19.65%. Using an adaptive power cell configuration at the common gate transistor, the measured PA under LTE 16-QAM 20MHz (40MHz) signals shows an average output power with a PAE exceeding 20.22 (20.15) dBm with 7.42 (7.35)% at an ACLRE-UTRA of -30dBc, within the BW1-dB.

    This study discusses an area-averaged incident power density to estimate surface temperature elevation from patch antenna arrays with 4 and 9 elements at the frequencies above 10 GHz. We computationally demonstrate that a smaller averaging area (1 cm2) of power density should be considered at the frequency of 30 GHz or higher compared with that at lower frequencies (4 cm2).

    This paper discusses the concept of PON standards convergence. The history of PON standardization is reviewed in brief as a way to explain how the industry arrived at its current divergent form. The reasons why convergence is favorable are enumerated, with a focus on what has changed since the last round of standardization. Finally, some paths forward are proposed.

    In this work, a novel formulation of crosstalk (XT) is developed, in which the perturbation/loading effect that the generator circuit exerts on the passive part of the receptor circuit is elucidated. Practical conditions (i.e., weak coupling and matching/mismatching of the generator circuit) under which this effect can be neglected are then discussed and exploited to develop an alternative radiated susceptibility (RS) test procedure, which resorts to crosstalk to induce at the terminations of a cable harness the same disturbance that would be induced by an external uniform plane-wave field. The proposed procedure, here developed with reference to typical RS setups foreseen by Standards of the aerospace sector, assures equivalence with field coupling without a priori knowledge and/or specific assumptions on the units connected to the terminations of the cable harness. Accuracy of the proposed scheme of equivalence is assessed by virtual experiments carried out in a full-wave simulation environment.

    This study presents several optimization approaches for the MPEG-2/4 Audio Advanced Coding (AAC) Low Complexity (LC) encoding and decoding processes. Considering the power consumption and the peripherals required for consumer electronics, this study adopts the TI OMAP5912 platform for portable devices. An important optimization issue for implementing AAC codec on embedded and mobile devices is to reduce computational complexity and memory consumption. Due to power saving issues, most embedded and mobile systems can only provide very limited computational power and memory resources for the coding process. As a result, modifying and simplifying only one or two blocks is insufficient for optimizing the AAC encoder and enabling it to work well on embedded systems. It is therefore necessary to enhance the computational efficiency of other important modules in the encoding algorithm. This study focuses on optimizing the Temporal Noise Shaping (TNS), Mid/Side (M/S) Stereo, Modified Discrete Cosine Transform (MDCT) and Inverse Quantization (IQ) modules in the encoder and decoder. Furthermore, we also propose an efficient memory reduction approach that provides a satisfactory balance between the reduction of memory usage and the expansion of the encoded files. In the proposed design, both the AAC encoder and decoder are built with fixed-point arithmetic operations and implemented on a DSP processor combined with an ARM-core for peripheral controlling. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed AAC codec is computationally effective, has low memory consumption, and is suitable for low-cost embedded and mobile applications.

    Ultrahigh-speed fiber lasers operating at up to 40 GHz offer a clean longitudinal comb and a narrow linewidth. This makes them suitable for applications including optical comb generation, ultrahigh-speed optical pulse transmission including PSK, and as opto-microwave oscillators. In this paper, we describe recent progress on ultrafast fiber lasers and their applications to optical metrology.

    As digital television transmission is becoming ubiquitous, a method that can remotely monitor the quality of the final and intermediate pictures is urgently needed. In particular, the case where standards conversion is included in the transmission chain is a serious issue as the input and output cannot simply be compared. This letter proposes a novel method to solve this issue. The combination of skipping fields/pixels and the previously proposed SSSWHT-RR method, using the information of correlation coefficients and variance of the picture, achieves accurate detection of picture failure.

    This paper describes, based on generation mechanism of conductive noise, that the real conductive noise on AC-mains can't be measured by LISN and 50 Ω-input impedance instrument specified by regulations such as CISPR. Second, it is pointed out that one of the causes of poor reproducibility in radiated emission measurement is the difference among line impedances of AC-mains. Finally, it is insisted that the apparatus such as LISN is necessary for stable measurement of radiated emission, and what improvement on LISN characteristics for higher frequency range should be done is introduced.

    The present status of HDTV in Europe and the concept of an evolutionary introduction of HDTV broadcasting is described. Corresponding HDTV standards and studio technologies are outlined. Analog transmission techniques like HD-MAC as well as coding techniques for digital transmission are presented. Also some informations about investigations for non-broadcast applications are given.
