  • Adaptive Tracking Control of Nonholonomic Mobile Robots by Computed Torque

    A computed torque controller for a dynamic model of nonholonomic mobile robots with bounded external disturbance is proposed to treat the adaptive tracking control problem using the separated design method. A velocity controller is first designed for the kinematic steering system to make the tracking error approaching to zero asympotically. Then, a computed torque controller is designed such that the true mobile robot velocity converges to the desired velocity controller. In each step, the controllers are designed independently, and this will simplify the design of controllers. A novel stability analysis involving the estimation of some differential inequalities is also given to guarantee the stability of the closed-loop system. Moreover, the regulation problem and the tracking problem will be treated using the proposed controller. In particular, the mobile robots can globally follow any path such as a straight-line, a circle and the path approaching to the origin. Furthermore, the problems of back-into-garage parking and the parallel parking problem can also be solved using the proposed controller. Some interesting simulation results are given to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed tracking control law.

    The fiber-optic sectorized remote antenna system by using the radio frequency (RF) optical transmission technique was promising for increasing the number of subscribers in the millimeter-wave broadband wireless access (MMW BWA) networks. To realize the cost-effectiveness of the fiber-optic sectorized remote antenna system covering four areas, we reached the conclusion that the best multiplexing schemes were the sub-carrier division multiplexing (SCM) of the intermediate frequency (IF) signals of 2 GHz for the down link, the coarse wavelength division multiplexing (CWDM) with the IF signals optical transmission for the up link and 1.3/1.55 µm-WDM for multiplexing the down link and the up link. In addition, the target specifications of this SCM-CWDM system were described, and the designs of the carrier to noise ratio (CNR) and the third order intermodulation distortion (IM3) were examined.

  • A Micro-Power Analog IC for Battery-Operated Systems

    The design of the analog part of a mixed analog-digital IC for a commercial wireless burglar alarm system is presented as an example of a very low-power VLSI design for battery-operated systems. The main constraint is battery life, which must be at least five years (with standard camera-battery). An operational amplifier, a power supply monitor and an oscillator are the core of the design. The operational amplifier absorbs 1.5 µA while the entire analog part absorbs 4 µA. Measures on each single part show compliance with specification. Test on working environment show its full functionality. Even though the example is application specific, the design solutions and each single element can also be utilized in many other battery-operated low-frequency devices (e.g. environmental parameter monitoring).

  • Global Ultrasonic System for Self-Localization of Mobile Robot

    This paper focuses on a global ultrasonic system for self-localization of a mobile robot. The global ultrasonic system consists of some ultrasonic generators fixed at some arbitrary position in the global coordinates and two receivers in the moving coordinates of the mobile robot. This system is used to obtain the state vector of the mobile robot in the global coordinates from the distance measurement between the ultrasonic generator and the receiver. In order to avoid the cross-talk and to synchronize the ultrasonic sensors, the sequential cuing technique using small-sized radio frequency module is adopted. An extended Kalman filter algorithm is used to process the noisy ultrasonic signal and to estimate the state vector. Computer simulations and experiments are conducted to verify the effectiveness of the proposed global ultrasonic system.

  • Slot Assignment Method for CDMA/NC-PRMA Systems in Multi-Cell Environments

    The CDMA/NC-PRMA protocol has been proposed to deal with multimedia traffic flexibly in mobile communications systems. The Load-Balancing (LB) method has been investigated for information slot assignment in CDMA/NC-PRMA systems. However, the LB method may be not effective in multi-cell environments due to inter-cell interference although this method is effective for single cell environments. In this paper, we propose new information slot assignment methods for multi-cell environments; a total reception power based assignment method and a signal to interference ratio (SIR) based assignment method. The former one assigns information slots based on the total reception power from both inside and outside the cell for each slot in the previous frame. The latter one predicts the SIR of receiving packets and assigns information slots to MSs only when predicted SIR exceeds the target SIR. The results of computer simulation show that the proposed schemes have superior transmission performance to the conventional scheme.

    In our previous research, we proposed a nonlinear digital filter to Estimate the Smoothed and Differential values of the sensor inputs by using Sliding mode system (ESDS). This estimator is able to eliminate impulsive noise efficiently from time series data. We applied this filter to processing outputs of robot sensors, and it became possible to perform robust environment recognition. ESDS is designed using a theory of variable structure system (VSS) with sliding mode. In short, ESDS is a nonlinear filter. Therefore, it is very difficult to clarify the behavior of the system analytically. Consequentially, we deal with the step function with impulsive noise as an example, and we attempt to eliminate this impulsive noise by keeping the sudden shift of signals. In this case, there is a trade-off between the noise elimination ability and the tracking performance for an input signal. Although ESDS is a nonlinear filter, it has the same trade-off as linear filters such as a low-pass filter. In order to satisfy these two conditions simultaneously, we use two filters whose parameters are independent of each other. Furthermore, in order to repress the adverse affect of impulsive noise in the steady-state, we introduced the boundary layer. Generally, a boundary layer is used so as to inhibit the harmful effect of chattering. Chattering is caused in the sliding mode system when the state of the system vibrates on the switching line of a sliding mode system. By introducing the boundary layer to ESDS, we can repress the adverse effect of impulsive noise in the steady-state. According to these considerations, we clarify the relationship between these characteristics of ESDS and the arbitrary parameters.

  • A File System Support for Streaming Media Caching

    This letter presents the implementation results of an application-level cache file system, MCFS, which is specifically designed to provide efficient caching and transmission mechanisms for streaming media. The file system is built on a virtual file disk which is constructed as a single large file on a general-purpose file system. MCFS suits the access requirement of continuous media caching and provides an efficient I/O mechanism for cache servers. The experimental results show that MCFS outperforms the comparison model and provides a consistent I/O bandwidth.

    Radio access networks (RANs) for new generation mobile communication systems are required to construct economical high capacity networks. An optical wireless link is expected as a solution to the linking method in the construction of these networks. The optical wireless link provides high bit-rate transmission and allows for easy installation. However, optical-waves are severely attenuated in free-space transmission due to weather conditions and cannot provide a high level of link availability in long-distance communications. This paper describes the applicability of an optical wireless link to the RAN based on obtained atmosphere propagation properties from experiments on an 800-nm band optical wireless link from the viewpoint of link availability. The experimental results show that the BER performance of the optical wireless link exhibits a sufficiently low power penalty of less than 1 dB compared to that of the optical fiber link. Moreover, the results confirm that atmosphere attenuation of an 800-nm band optical wave due to fog and rainfall can be estimated by using a simple estimation equation. The optical wireless link could be used for RAN approach links with the range of less than 350 m to achieve the link outage rate of 0.004% from the viewpoint of the link budget design.

    Recent advances of Web information systems such as e-commerce and e-learning have created very large but hidden demands on conceptual multiresolution analysis for more generalized information analysis, cognition and modeling. To meet the demands in a general way, its modeling is formulated based on modern algebraic topology. To be specific, the modeling formulation is worked out in an incrementally modular abstraction hierarchy with emphasis on the two levels of the hierarchy appropriate for conceptual modeling: the adjunction space level and the cellular structured space level. Examples are shown to demonstrate the usefulness of the presented model as well as an implementation of a flower structure case.

  • An Adaptive Multihop Clustering Scheme for Ad Hoc Networks with High Mobility

    A clustering scheme for ad hoc networks is aimed at managing a number of mobile devices by utilizing hierarchical structure of the networks. In order to construct and maintain an effective hierarchical structure in ad hoc networks where mobile devices may move at high mobility, the following requirements must be satisfied. (1) The role of each mobile device for the hierarchical structure is adaptive to dynamic change of the topology of the ad hoc networks. The role of each mobile device should thus change autonomously based on local information in each mobile device. (2) The overhead for management of the hierarchical structure is small. The number of mobile devices in each cluster should thus be almost equivalent. This paper proposes an adaptive multihop clustering scheme for highly mobile ad hoc networks. The results obtained by extensive simulation experiments show that the proposed scheme does not depend on mobility and node degree of mobile devices in the network, which satisfy the above requirements.

  • A Sub-Optimal On-Line Scheduling Algorithm with Scheduling Window

    The complexities of many previous scheduling algorithms for IRIS tasks are too high to apply them to practical systems handling many tasks. The high complexities stem from the fact that the algorithms perform scheduling on all tasks in a system, producing an optimal solution. As a way to reduce the complexity of scheduling, we propose a heuristic on-line scheduling algorithm that schedules the IRIS tasks only in a scheduling window, producing a sub-optimal solution. A scheduling window contains W important tasks determined by a selection policy. The performance of the proposed algorithm is verified by simulation.

    This paper proposes an ROF ubiquitous antenna architecture for the wireless CDMA system. The proposed system separates each component of independent signals passing through the multipath in radio and optical links, which are gathered at passive double star link, by using RAKE reception and the macrodiversity effect is obtained. Theoretical analysis shows that the proposed system improves BER performance by 22 dB and reduces the transmission power and its control range by 19 dB.

    A decentralized estimation system usually contains a number of remotely located local sensors that can pre-process observed signal and convey the processed data to a fusion center that makes a final estimation. The local sensors are linked to the data fusion center by transmission channels. When the observation (or estimate of parameter) is quantized at the peripheral sensors and an assumption of conditionally independent sensor data is made, due to potential communication constraints on the channels, the problem of quantization design and bandwidth allocation among the channels linking local sensors to the fusion center is studied in this letter.

  • Robust Control with Adaptive Compensation Input for Linear Uncertain Systems

    This paper deals with a design problem of a robust controller which achieves not only robust stability but also a performance robustness for linear systems with structured uncertainties satisfying matching condition. The performance robustness means that comparing the transient behavior of the uncertain system with a desired one generated by the nominal system, the deterioration of control performance is suppressed. In this approach, the control law consists of a state feedback with the fixed gain designed by using the nominal system, a state feedback with an adaptive gain determined by a parameter adjustment law and a compensation input for the purpose of keeping transient behavior as closely as possible to the desirable one. We show the parameter adjustment law in order to guarantee robust stability and that the condition for the existence of the compensation input is equivalent to the Riccati equation for the standard linear quadratic control problem. Finally, numerical examples are presented.

    This letter introduces a chaotic circuit consisting of one linear 2-port VCCS, one hysteresis 2-port VCCS, and two capacitors. The circuit has double screw attractors, quad screw attractors and co-existence states of them. Since the system is piecewise linear, attractors existence condition can be described using exact piecewise solutions. Using a simple test circuit, typical phenomena are verified in the laboratory.

  • Bayes Rule for MAC State Sojourn Time Supporting Packet Data Service in CDMA Wireless Cellular Networks

    In provisioning packet data service on wireless cellular networks, a scheme of altering connection status between mobile and base stations appeared with an effort to utilize resource during idle periods. A critical issue in such scheme of sojourn and transition on the connection states is to determine a maximum time to sojourn at each state. An excessive sojourn time leads to resource invasion by inactive stations, while a high cost of re-establishing connection components is imposed by an insufficient sojourn. Thus, the maximum sojourn times must be optimized in consideration of the two conflicting arguments. In this paper, we consider a generic scheme of connection status transitions and formulate a decision problem to determine maximum sojourn times by introducing a loss function which reflects the cost of connection re-establishment as well as the loss induced by inefficient resource usage. From the decision problem, we derive an optimal value for maximum sojourn time, identified as Bayes rule, by observing the delay time of last packet to have posterior information about the length of upcoming idle period. From the analytical results, we show the Bayes sojourn time is trivial under a constraint on loss coefficients when packet arrivals follow a Poisson process.

    The demand for wireless mobile communications has grown at a very high rate, recently. In order to solve the non-uniform traffic rates, the use of cell splits is unavoidable for balancing the traffic rate and maximizing total system capacity. For cell planning, a DS-CDMA cellular system can be comprise of different cell sizes because of different demands and population density of the service area. In this paper, we develop a general model to study the forward link capacity and outage probability of a DS-CDMA cellular system with mixed cell sizes. The analysis of outage probability is carried out using the log-normal approximation. When a macrocell is split into the three microcells, as an example, we calculate the multi-cross interferences between macrocells and microcells, and the forward link capacities for the microcells and the neighboring macrocells. The maximum allowable capacity plane for macrocell and microcell is also investigated. The numerical results and discussions with previous published results of reverse link are summarized.

    An exact and an approximated reliabilities of a 2-dimensional consecutive k-out-of-n:F system are discussed. Although analysis to obtain exact reliability requires many calculation resources for a system with a large number of components, the proposed method obtains the reliability lower bound by using a combinatorial equation that does not depend on the system size. The method has an assumption on the maximum number of failed components in an operable system. The reliability is exact when the total number of failed components is less than the assumed maximum number. The accuracy of the method is confirmed by numerical examples.

  • Extended One-Shot Decorrelating Detector for Asynchronous DS/CDMA Systems

    We propose an extended one-shot decorrelating detector (EOS-DD) which may be viewed as a generalized double window multiuser detector (DW-MD) for asynchronous direct-sequence code-division multiple-access (DS/CDMA) systems in frequency selective fading environments. The EOS-DD extends a processing window and the received signal over an extended window is utilized for decorrelating. The effects of the window size on BER performance are investigated by numerical analysis. Analysis and simulation show that the EOS-DD is superior to the one-shot decorrelating detector (OS-DD) and finite memory length truncated decorrelating detector (FIR-DD) in terms of noise enhancement and near-far resistance. It is also shown that the EOS-DD with window size 4 can provide significantly improved performance compared to the EOS-DD with window size 2.

  • Mitigating Data Fragmentation for Small File Accesses

    In traditional file systems, data clustering and grouping have improved small file performance. These schemes make it possible for file systems to use large data transfers in accessing small files, reducing disk I/Os. However, as file systems age, disks become too fragmented to support the grouping and clustering. To offer a solution to this problem, we describe a De-Fragmented File System (DFFS), which gradually alleviates fragmentation of small files. By using data cached in memory, DFFS dynamically relocates blocks of small fragmented files, clustering them on the disks contiguously. In addition, DFFS relocates small related files in the same directory, grouping them at contiguous disk locations.
