The present paper proposes two new methods for constructing polyphase asymmetric zero-correlation zone (A-ZCZ) sequence sets. In previous studies, the authors proposed methods for constructing quasi-optimal polyphase A-ZCZ sequence sets using perfect sequences and for constructing optimal polyphase A-ZCZ sequence sets using discrete Fourier transform (DFT) matrices. However, in these methods, the total number of sequences in an A-ZCZ sequence set cannot exceed the period of the perfect sequence or the dimension of the DFT matrix used for constructing the A-ZCZ sequence set. We now propose two extended versions of these methods. The proposed methods can generate a quasi-optimal or optimal polyphase A-ZCZ sequence set where the total number of sequences exceeds the period of the perfect sequence or the dimension of the DFT matrix. In other words, the proposed methods can generate new A-ZCZ sequence sets that cannot be obtained from the known methods.

The even-shift orthogonal sequence whose out-of-phase aperiodic autocorrelation function takes zero at any even shifts is generalized to multi-dimension called even-shift orthogonal array (E-array), and the logic function of E-array of power-of-two length is clarified. It is shown that E-array can be constructed by complementary arrays, which mean pairs of arrays that the sum of each aperiodic autocorrelation function at the same phase shifts takes zero at any shift except zero shift, as well as the one-dimensional case. It is also shown that the number of mates of E-array with which the cross correlation function between E-arrays takes zero at any even shifts is equal to the dimension. Furthermore it is investigated that E-array possesses good aperiodic autocorrelation that the rate of zero correlation values to array length approaches one as the dimension becomes large.

Amplify-and-forward (AF) relay multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems can achieve high data rate and high quality communications. On the other hand, it has to estimate all channels between the source-relay and relay-destination nodes in the destination node. In MIMO/OFDM systems, high time resolution carrier interferometry (HTRCI) has been proposed to achieve an accurate channel estimation (CE) with a small number of pilot signals. However, since it has many interferences, an accurate CE is not obtained and the system performance is degraded in AF relay MIMO/OFDM systems. Therefore, in this paper, we propose the complex HTRCI (C-HTRCI) pilot signal and the enhanced minimum mean square error (E-MMSE) equalization to achieve an accurate CE and to improve the system performance for AF relay MIMO/OFDM systems.

To achieve more high speed and high quality systems of wireless communications, orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) has been proposed. Moreover, OFDMA considering the multiuser diversity (MUDiv) has been also proposed to achieve more high system performance. On the other hand, the conventional MUDiv/OFDMA requires large complexity to select the subcarrier of each user. To solve this problem, we have proposed a MUDiv/OFDMA based on the low granularity block (LGB). However, it degrades the system performance in the environment which contains many deep faded subcarrier channels. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a cooperative LGB-MUDiv/OFDMA to mitigate the influence due to the deep faded subcarrier channel.

In this paper, we theoretically analyse the influence of intersymbol interference (ISI) and continuous wave interference (CWI) on the bit error rate (BER) performance of the spread spectrum (SS) system using a real-valued Huffman sequence under the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) environment. The aperiodic correlation function of the Huffman sequence has zero sidelobes except the shift-end values at the left and right ends of shift. The system can give the unified communication and ranging system because the output of a matched filter (MF) is the ideal impulse by generating transmitted signal of the bit duration T=NTc, N=2n, n=1,2,… from the sequence of length M=2kN+1, k=0,1,…, where Tc is the chip duration and N is the spreading factor. As a result, the BER performance of the system is improved with decrease in the absolute value of the shift-end value, and is not influenced by ISI if the shift-end value is almost zero-value. In addition, the BER performance of the system of the bit duration T=NTc with CWI is improved with increase in the sequence length M=2kN+1, and the system can decrease the influence of CWI.

In this paper, we proposed the compact construction of a matched filter for integrand code, which do not require the high-rate clock pulse in two-valued PWM (pulse width modulation) code, using a real-valued shift-orthogonal finite-length sequence, which has a sharp aperiodic autocorrelation function with zero sidelobes except at left and right shift-ends. This matched filters are implemented on a field programmable gate array (FPGA) corresponding to 400,000 logic gates. A proposed matched filter for the sequence of length 129 can be constructed by the circuit scale of about 47% compared with conventional filter.

This paper presents a method of generating sets of orthogonal and zero-correlation zone (ZCZ) periodic real-valued sequences of period 2n, n ≥ 1. The sequences admit a fast correlation algorithm and the sets of sequences achieve the upper bound on family size. A periodic orthogonal sequence has the periodic autocorrelation function with zero sidelobes, and a set with orthogonal sequences whose mutual periodic crosscorrelation function at zero shift is zero. Similarly, a ZCZ set is the set of the sequences with zero-correlation zone. In this paper, we derive the real-valued periodic orthogonal sequences of period 2n from a real-valued Huffman sequence of length 2ν+1, ν being a positive integer and ν ≥ n, whose aperiodic autocorrelation function has zero sidelobes except possibly at the left and right shift-ends. The orthogonal and ZCZ sets of real-valued periodic orthogonal sequences are useful in various systems, such as synchronous code division multiple access (CDMA) systems, quasi-synchronous CDMA systems and digital watermarkings.

The present paper proposes a new method for constructing polyphase asymmetric zero-correlation zone (A-ZCZ) sequence sets. The proposed method can generate A-ZCZ sequence sets that cannot be obtained from methods proposed by other researchers and is a generalized version of our previously proposed method. An A-ZCZ sequence set can be regarded as a ZCZ sequence set. The newly obtained A-ZCZ sequence sets include quasi-optimal ZCZ sequence sets of which the zero-cross-correlation zone (ZCCZ) length between different sequence subsets is larger than the mathematical upper bound of conventional ZCZ sequence sets. A new method for extending the A-ZCZ sequence sets is also presented in the present paper.

The optical ZCZ code is a set of pairs of binary and bi-phase sequences with zero correlation zone. An optical M-ary direct sequence spread spectrum (M-ary/DS-SS) system using this code can detect a desired sequence without interference of undesired sequences. However, the bank of matched filters in a receiver circuit may fall into large scale. In this paper, we propose the compact construction of a bank of matched filters for an M-ary/DS-SS system using an optical ZCZ code. This filter bank can decrease the number of 2-input adders from O(N2) to O(N) and delay circuits from O(N2) to O(Nlog 2 N), respectively, and is implemented on a field programmable gate array (FPGA) corresponding to 400,000 logic gates.

The spreading technique can improve system performance since it mitigates the influence of deeply faded subcarrier channels. Proposals for implementing orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems include frequency symbol spreading (FSS) based on the Walsh-Hadamard transform (WHT) and the discrete Fourier transform (DFT). In a single carrier frequency division multiplexing (SC-FDMA), good performance is obtained by the interleaved subcarrier allocation. Moreover, in a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO), interleaving the operation of the different transmit antennas is also effective. By combining these techniques, in this paper, we propose the different antenna interleaved allocation with the full and divided WHT/DFT spreading for a high time resolution carrier interferometry (HTRCI) MIMO-OFDM.

A set consisting of K subsets of Msequences of length L is called a complementary sequence set expressed by A(L, K, M), if the sum of the out-of-phase aperiodic autocorrelation functions of the sequences within a subset and the sum of the cross-correlation functions between the corresponding sequences in any two subsets are zero at any phase shift. Suehiro et al. first proposed complementary set A(Nn, N, N) where N and n are positive integers greater than or equal to 2. Recently, several complementary sets related to Suehiro's construction, such as N being a power of a prime number, have been proposed. However, there is no discussion about their inclusion relation and properties of sequences. This paper rigorously formulates and investigates the (generalized) logic functions of the complementary sets by Suehiro et al. in order to understand its construction method and the properties of sequences. As a result, it is shown that there exists a case where the logic function is bent when n is even. This means that each series can be guaranteed to have pseudo-random properties to some extent. In other words, it means that the complementary set can be successfully applied to communication on fluctuating channels. The logic functions also allow simplification of sequence generators and their matched filters.

In this paper, we propose new generation methods of two-dimensional (2D) optical zero-correlation zone (ZCZ) sequences with the high peak autocorrelation amplitude. The 2D optical ZCZ sequence consists of a pair of a binary sequence which takes 1 or 0 and a bi-phase sequence which takes 1 or -1, and has a zero-correlation zone in the two-dimensional correlation function. Because of these properties, the 2D optical ZCZ sequence is suitable for optical code-division multiple access (OCDMA) system using an LED array having a plurality of light-emitting elements arranged in a lattice pattern. The OCDMA system using the 2D optical ZCZ sequence can be increased the data rate and can be suppressed interference by the light of adjacent LEDs. By using the proposed generation methods, we can improve the peak autocorrelation amplitude of the sequence. This means that the BER performance of the OCDMA system using the sequence can be improved.

The matched filter banks are implemented on a field-programmable gate array (FPGA) with 51,840 logic elements (LEs). The proposed matched filter bank for an MO-ZCZ sequence set of length 160 can be constructed by a circuit size that is about 8.6% that of a conventional matched filter bank.

In this paper, we propose a new structure for a compact matched filter bank (MFB) for an optical zero-correlation zone (ZCZ) sequence set with Zcz=2z. The proposed MFB can reduces operation elements such as 2-input adders and delay elements. The number of 2-input adders decrease from O(N2) to O(N log2 N), delay elements decrease from O(N2) to O(N). In addition, the proposed MFBs for the sequence of length 32, 64, 128 and 256 with Zcz=2,4 and 8 are implemented on a field programmable gate array (FPGA). As a result, the numbers of logic elements (LEs) of the proposed MFBs for the sequences with Zcz=2 of length 32, 64, 128 and 256 are suppressed to about 76.2%, 84.2%, 89.7% and 93.4% compared to that of the conventional MFBs, respectively.

Nowadays, open source software (OSS) systems are adopted by proprietary software projects. To reduce the risk of using problematic OSS systems (e.g., causing system crashes), it is important for proprietary software projects to assess OSS systems in advance. Therefore, OSS quality assessment models are studied to obtain information regarding the quality of OSS systems. Although the OSS quality assessment models are partially validated using a small number of case studies, to the best of our knowledge, there are few studies that empirically report how industrial projects actually use OSS quality assessment models in their own development process. In this study, we empirically evaluate the cost and effectiveness of OSS quality assessment models at Fujitsu Kyushu Network Technologies Limited (Fujitsu QNET). To conduct the empirical study, we collect datasets from (a) 120 OSS projects that Fujitsu QNET's projects actually used and (b) 10 problematic OSS projects that caused major problems in the projects. We find that (1) it takes average and median times of 51 and 49 minutes, respectively, to gather all assessment metrics per OSS project and (2) there is a possibility that we can filter problematic OSS systems by using the threshold derived from a pool of assessment metrics. Fujitsu QNET's developers agree that our results lead to improvements in Fujitsu QNET's OSS assessment process. We believe that our work significantly contributes to the empirical knowledge about applying OSS assessment techniques to industrial projects.

Recently, asymmetric zero-correlation zone (A-ZCZ) sequence sets that are composed of several sequence subsets have been proposed. In A-ZCZ sequence sets, the zero-cross-correlation zone (ZCCZ) length between different sequence subsets is larger than the zero-correlation zone (ZCZ) length in each sequence subset. However, the ZCCZ length between different sequence subsets was not precisely shown in previous studies. The present letter shows precisely the ZCCZ length between different sequence subsets. This information is useful for estimating the magnitude of inter-cell interference when designing approximately synchronized code-division multiple-access (AS-CDMA) systems.

A polyphase sequence set with orthogonality consisting complex elements with unit magnitude, can be expressed by a unitary matrix corresponding to the complex Hadamard matrix or the discrete Fourier transform (DFT) matrix, whose rows are orthogonal to each other. Its matched filter bank (MFB), which can simultaneously output the correlation between a received symbol and any sequence in the set, is effective for constructing communication systems flexibly. This paper discusses the compact design of the MFB of a polyphase sequence set, which can be applied to any sequence set generated by the given logic function. It is primarily focused on a ZCZ code with q-phase or more elements expressed as A(N=qn+s, M=qn-1, Zcz=qs(q-1)), where q, N, M and Zcz respectively denote, a positive integer, sequence period, family size, and a zero correlation zone, since the compact design of the MFB becomes difficult when Zcz is large. It is shown that the given logic function on the ring of integers modulo q generating the ZCZ code gives the matrix representation of the MFB that M-dimensional output vector can be represented by the product of the unitary matrix of order M and an M-dimensional input vector whose elements are written as the sum of elements of an N-dimensional input vector. Since the unitary matrix (complex Hadamard matrix) can be factorized into n-1 unitary matrices of order M with qM nonzero elements corresponding to fast unitary transform, a compact MFB with a minimum number of circuit elements can be designed. Its hardware complexity is reduced from O(MN) to O(qM log q M+N).

In this paper, we propose a generation method of new mutually zero-correlation zone set of optical orthogonal sequences (MZCZ-OOS) consisting of binary and bi-phase sequence pairs based on the optical zero-correlation zone (ZCZ) sequence set. The MZCZ-OOS is composed of several small orthogonal sequence sets. The sequences that belong to same subsets are orthogonal, and there is a ZCZ between the sequence that belong to different subsets. The set is suitable for the M-ary quasi-synchronous optical code-division multiple access (M-ary/QS-OCDMA) system. The product of set size S and family size M of proposed MMZCZ-OOS is more than the upper bound of optical ZCZ sequence set, and is fewer than the that of optical orthogonal sequence set.
