A propagation experiment on an actual channel is conducted to confirm the effectiveness of the 1-tap time domain beamforming (TDBF) technique we proposed in previous work. This technique offers simple beamforming for the millimeter waveband massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) applied wireless backhaul and so supports the rapid deployment of fifth generation mobile communications (5G) small cells. This paper details propagation experiments in the 75GHz band and the characteristics evaluations of 1-tap TDBF as determined from actual channel measurements. The results show that 1-tap TDBF array gain nearly equals the frequency domain maximal ratio combining (MRC) value, which is ideal processing; the difference is within 0.5dB. In addition, 1-tap TDBF can improve on the signal-to-interference power ratio (SIR) by about 13% when space division multiplexing (SDM) is performed assuming existing levels of channel estimation error.

We propose two simple weight calculation methods (primary method and enhanced method), that estimate approximated phase plane from a few antenna phase and calculate weights of all antenna elements, for wireless backhaul systems that utilize millimeter wave band massive antenna arrays. Such systems are expected to be used instead of optical fiber for connecting many small cell base stations (SCBSs) to the core network, and supporting the rapid deployment of SCBSs. However, beamforming with massive antenna arrays requires many analog-digital converters (ADCs) and incurs the issue of implementation complexity. The proposed methods overcome the problem by reducing the number of ADCs. Computer simulations clarify the appropriate layout and the number of ADCs connected to antenna elements; the effectiveness of the proposed methods is confirmed by evaluations with measured channel state information (CSI) in propagation experiments on a wireless backhaul system. Experimental verifications on the case of calculating the weight of 200 elements from the phases of just 9 elements show that the array gain degradation from ideal (the case in which the phases of all elements are used estimation) with both methods is less than 0.4 dB in the direct wave dominant environment. In addition, the enhanced method holds the array gain degradation to under 0.8dB in an environment existing reflected waves. These results show that the proposed methods can attain high accuracy beamforming while reducing ADC number.

A waveguide 2-plane hybrid coupler with two operating bands is proposed. The cross-sectional shape of the coupled region inside the proposed coupler is designed with a two-dimensional arbitrary geometry sorting method. Simulations of the proposed hybrid coupler has a fractional bandwidth (FBW) of 2.17% at the center of 24.99GHz, and at the center of 28.28GHz an FBW of 6.13%. The proposed coupler is analyzed by the mode-matching finite-element hybrid method, and the final result is obtained using a genetic algorithm. The analyzed result of the coupling for the main modes in the coupled region is presented. The design result is confirmed by measurements.

This paper proposes a new antenna array design of Massive MIMO for capacity enhancement in line of sight (LOS) environments. Massive MIMO has two key problems: the heavy overhead of feeding back the channel state information (CSI) for very large number of transmission and reception antenna element pairs and the huge computation complexity imposed by the very large scale matrixes. We have already proposed a practical application of Massive MIMO, that is, Massive Antenna Systems for Wireless Entrance links (MAS-WE), which can clearly solve the two key problems of Massive MIMO. However, the conventional antenna array arrangements; e.g. uniform planar array (UPA) or uniform circular array (UCA) degrade the system capacity of MAS-WE due to the channel spatial correlation created by the inter-element spacing. When the LOS component dominates the propagation channel, the antenna array can be designed to minimize the inter-user channel correlation. We propose an antenna array arrangement to control the grating-lobe positions and achieve very low channel spatial correlation. Simulation results show that the proposed arrangement can reduce the spatial correlation at CDF=50% value by 80% compared to UCA and 75% compared to UPA.

This paper proposes a null-space expansion scheme for multiuser massive MIMO transmission in order to suppress inter-user interference (IUI) triggered by the temporal variation of the channel. The downlink multiuser MIMO channel capacity of time varying channels is severely degraded since IUI must be suppressed at the transmitter side by using past estimated channel state information at the transmitter side (CSIT). Massive MIMO has emerged as one of the most promising technologies for further capacity enhancement by increasing the number of base station (BS) antenna elements. Exploiting the excess degrees of freedom (DoFs) inherent in massive MIMO, a BS with the proposed IUI suppression scheme performs multiple null-steering for each UE (User Equipment) antenna element, which expands the null-space dimension. Computer simulations show that the proposed scheme has superior IUI suppression performance to the existing channel prediction scheme in time varying channels.

We propose a novel simplified Viterbi equalizer for high symbol rate FWA (Fixed Wireless Access) systems carrying 64QAM signals. Reduced complexity and improved performance are achieved adopting two approaches. The first one is reducing the number of survival paths, taking advantage of the large D/U common in LOS (line of sight) communications. The second one is using a multi-stage process to generate desired signal replicas based on their likelihoods. Computer simulations confirm that the proposed replica generation method offers a performance improvement of about 1 dB and the proposed Viterbi equalizer offers reduced complexity with no performance penalty compared to full Viterbi equalizer.
In this paper, we propose a novel open-loop Automatic Frequency Control (AFC) circuit suitable for 64QAM point-to-multipoint (P-MP) burst communications. The proposed AFC contains two frequency offset detectors. One estimates the phase rotation over long intervals to obtain accurate estimates at the cost of phase ambiguity. The other estimates the phase rotation over short intervals and its output is used to resolve the ambiguity in the following phase ambiguity compensator. Thus, the proposed AFC circuit calculates the phase rotation over sufficiently long periods to yield accurately estimate the carrier frequency offset while suppressing the phase-unwrapping problem. The proposed AFC approaches the Cramer-Rao bound (CRB) and so achieves very small residual frequency offset. The proposed AFC circuit can be implemented with much smaller circuit scale than the conventional devices. Computer simulations and experiments confirm that its residual frequency error is less than of 10-5 for the frame format considered; this performance is sufficient for the 64QAM -40 Mbaud system targeted.
This paper describes methods used in the design of a high speed burst modem applied for mobile communication systems. The modem has burst mode operations including burst mode AGC (automatic gain control), burst mode BTR (bit timing recovery), adaptive equalization, and diversity based on a selection algorithm to achieve a higher performance in multipath fading channels. Moreover, the performance of the burst modem, which is developed using analog signal processing devices, DSPs (digital signal processors), and FPGAs (field programmable gate arrays), is analyzed experimentally. Results show that the modem can suppress irreducible BER values below 1. 0e-6 and attains a 2 dB implicit diversity gain over multipath fading channels modeled by a two-ray impulse response system with independent Rayleigh fading.

Software radio base and personal station prototypes are proposed and implemented. The prototypes are composed of RF/IF, A/D and D/A, pre- and post-processors, CPU, and DSP parts. System software is partitioned into CPU program and DSP program to use processor resources effectively. They support various air interfaces, some of which are equivalent to the 384 kbit/s transmission rate PHS (personal handy phone system) and a 96 kbit/s transmission rate system. The base station can also be used as a communication bridge between two systems. In order to ease IF filter requirements, the zero-stuff method is employed. Basic transmission and receiving performances are evaluated in an experiment and their results agree well with those expected.

A software defined radio (SDR) prototype based on a multiprocessor architecture (MPA) is developed. Software for Japanese personal handy phone system (PHS) of a 2G mobile system, and IEEE 802.11 wireless LAN, which has much wider bandwidth than the 2G systems, is successfully implemented. Newly developed flexible-rate pre-/ post-processor (FR-PPP) achieves the flexibility and wideband performance that the platform needs. This paper shows the design of the SDR prototype and evaluates its performance by experiments that include PHS processor load and wireless LAN throughput characteristics and processor load.

This paper presents experimental results of our proposed null-space expansion scheme for multiuser massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) in time varying channels. Multiuser MIMO transmission with the proposed scheme can suppress the inter-user interference (IUI) caused by outdated channel state information (CSI). The excess degrees of freedom (DoFs) of massive MIMO is exploited to perform additional null-steering using past estimated CSI. The signal-to-interference power ratio (SIR) and spectral efficiency performances achieved by the proposed scheme that uses measured CSI is experimentally evaluated. It is confirmed that the proposed scheme shows performance superior to the conventional channel prediction scheme. In addition, IUI can be stably suppressed even in high mobility environments by further increasing the null-space dimension.

Stochastic geometry analysis of wireless backhaul networks with beamforming in roadside environments is provided. In particular, a new model to analyze antenna gains, interference, and coverage in roadside environments of wireless networks with Poisson point process deployment of BSs is proposed. The received interference from the BSs with wired backhaul (referred to as anchored BS or A-BS) and the coverage probability of a typical BS are analyzed under different approximations of the location of the serving A-BS and combined antenna gains. Considering the beamforming, the coverage probability based on the aggregate interference consisting of the direct interference from the A-BSs and reflected interference from the BSs with wireless backhaul is also derived.
