  • Theoretical Prediction of Propagation for Future Mobile Communications--Reviewing and Looking Forward--

    Theoretical prediction of propagation is required for the future urban mobile communications, in order to make possible precise and universal prediction for arbitrary conditions. The necessity and the fundamental concept of theoretical prediction are introduced, and the theoretical prediction of mean field strength in urban areas is reviewed and discussed. Theoretical method is important particularly in prediction of multipath delay characteristics, in relation to the prediction of error rates in digital mobile radio communications.

    This paper describes a fiber-optic microcell radio system with a spectral delivery switch to meet traffic demands. Optical link performance is discussed from the view points of link loss and noise figure aimed at system design. The theoretical carrier-to-noise ratio (CNR) performance is shown as a function of the input electrical power of the laser and the received optical power. Improvement of dynamic range defined by both CNR and intermodulation distortion is proposed by using the frequency modulation (FM) technique. The experimental results using the proposed technique indicate that the performance is much better than that of conventional methods. Moreover, economical diversity planning delivery methods over fibers are presented. This strategy will provide more cost effective and flexible networks.

    A typical fault-tolerance technique of systolic arrays is to include redundant processors and links so that the array is reconfigurable when some processors fail. Another typical technique is to implement each processor by a majority voter and N (N3) copies of processors so that the faults of up to N-2 copies of processors can be masked without reconfiguration. This paper proposes a systolic linear array called reconfigurable modular redundant linear array (RMA) that combines these techniques with N4. When up to 2 copies of each processor fail in RMA, the faults can be masked without reconfiguration. When some voters or more than 2 copies of a processor fail, RMA can be reconfigured by specifying a new switch pattern. In order to perform reconfiguration efficiently, we present a reconfiguration algorithm with time complexity O (n), where n is the number of processors in RMA.

    Recently, making good use of the advantages of optical fibers such as wide bandwidth and low loss, it has been investigated to apply optical fiber link to microcellular mobile communication systems. This system allows complex equipment to be located at microcell control station, and can simplify the equipment of microcell base stations compared with the conventional systems. In this paper, we analyze the performance of optical fiber link for microcellular mobile communication systems, taking radio link fading and optical link nonlinear distortions into consideration. From the calculated results, it is disclosed that the effect of both items does not generate the significant excess CNR degradation, and the correct CNR can be approximately calculated by using CNR of non-faded case. And it is also disclosed that the degradation of CNR due to optical link nonlinearity is slightly improved by taking adjacent channel signal fade into consideration.

    We propose a direct-sequence spread-spectrum multi-access (DS/SSMA) receiver that incorporates multipath diversity combining and multistage co-channel interference (CCI) cancellation. This receiver structure which is more resistant to the near/far problem essentially removes more and more of the CCI with each successive cancellation stage. With the assumption that perfect channel estimates have been obtained, we analyze the bit error rate (BER) performance of this system when received powers are unequal. Results show that the BER can approach that of a single-user case as the number of CCI cancellation stages increases.

    A new theoretical propagation model for wideband fading channel simulation in mobile radio environments is presented. It is based on a path model which produces scattered waves according to Poisson process. The typical properties of transmission characteristics deduced from the theoretical and experimental studies are taken in the model. Using the propagation model, an analytical method for the near-far problem of CDMA in mobile radio environments is proposed. An example of the analysis by means of a simulation is also presented.

    This paper proposes a new speaker adaptation method using a speaker weighting technique for multiple reference speaker training of a hidden Markov model (HMM). The proposed method considers the similarities between an input speaker and multiple reference speakers, and use the similarities to control the influence of the reference speakers upon HMM. The evaluation experiments were carried out through the/b, d, g, m, n, N/phoneme recognition task using 8 speakers. Average recognition rates were 68.0%, 66.4%, and 65.6% respectively for three test sets which have different speech styles. These were 4.8%, 8.8%, and 10.5% higher than the rates of the spectrum mapping method, and also 1.6%, 6.7%, and 8.2% higher than the rates of the multiple reference speaker training, the supplemented HMM. The evaluation experiments clarified the effectiveness of the proposed method.

    An optical On-Off Keyed (OOK) pulse is often stretched in dispersive channels, thus producing intersymbol interference (ISI) and degrading the performance. In this paper, error probability is presented for a convolutionally encoded optical OOK channels with ISI. Both ISI-matched and ISI-mismatched decoders are taken into account in the error probability analysis. The encoded optical OOK signal is received by Avalanche Photo Diode (APD) and the number of APD output photo-electrons is counted for soft decision Viterbi decoding. Error probability is derived for a 3-bit and an ideal soft decision schemes in ISI-mismatched decoder and for an ideal soft decision scheme in ISI-matched decoder. Numerical results demonstrate the effects of mismatching or 3-bit soft decision scheme. Some computer simulations are carried out to confirm the validity of the analysis.

  • The Realities and Myths of Multipath Propagation

    In this paper, some misconceptions about "multipath propagation" are discussed for those propagation engineers, who are not familiar with the close relationship between multipath propagation and a communication system in a mobile/portable radio communication environment. It is shown that believed facts about multipath propagation are not always true. Namely, it is well-known that multipath propagation is undesirable if a conventional sample-and-decision receiver is assumed. It is not well-recognized that it can be a desirable phenomenon if a sophisticated communication system uses adaptive equalization, anti-multipath modulation, or spread spectrum communication, for example. On the other hand, it is widely accepted that root mean square (rms) multipath delay spread is a good measure of bit-error-rate performance, i.e., as rms delay spread gets larger, bit-error-rate generally gets worse. However, it is pointed out that this is not always true, especially in propagation conditions with very long-delayed multipath signals. In short, it is the purpose of this paper to show examples that the facts believed to be true sometimes turn out to be false, unless we pay attention to both aspects of propagation and system design in the field of mobile/portable radio communications. In fact, for highly efficient communication systems design, propagation, antenna and system factors should be taken into account simultaneously.

    Power-law decay of current for the application of step-function voltage observed for amorphous materials can be expressed by an admittance sa(0a1) of a linear diode using complex angular frequency s. It is shown that power-law decay can be interpreted as a superposition of exponential decays having fractally distributed relaxation times and simulated using RC networks. By use of a similar manner, admittance s-b (0b1) showing the relation of duality can be simulated using RL networks. According to these methods, we can synthesize the admittance involving non-integer exponents systematically.

    Complex filters are used to synthesize real filters in digital signal processing, but few in analog one. In this paper, we propose a leapfrog synthesis of complex analog filters. By shifting frequency response of an LCR network along the ω-axis, we have a complex filter with imaginary resistances, which is called an "LCRRi filter." The complex resonator is then used to simulate series- or parallel-arms of the LCRRi filter. We analyze nonideal properties of the complex resonator due to finite gain-bandwidth product of operational amplifiers and propose a compensation method to put a pole on correct location. Experimental results show good performance of the proposed method.

    In this paper, the effects of the grouping and the addressing methods on the accuracy and the response time in a visual search task were investigated. Four grouping conditions (4, 8, 16 and 32 groups) and four addressing methods (random, ordered, cartesian and polar) were selected in the experiment. For each combination of grouping and addressing methods, subjects repeated the search task 30 times. No remarkable differences of the percent correct were observed both among the levels of grouping and among the addressing methods. The mean response time increased with the increase of the number of groups. Moreover, the interaction between addressing methods and grouping for both percent correct and response time was clarified.

  • Performance Analysis of the Capacity Controlled System with Adaptive Equalizer

    This paper analyzes the performance of the capacity controlled radio system under a frequency selective fading environment. This system controls the number of modulation levels according to the number of active subscribers. In the analysis, we consider the capacity controlled system either with or without adaptive equalizer. As the results of analysis, it is clarified that the system is superior to the conventional fixed capacity system, and can be considered as a good countermeasure for multi-path fading. And it is found that there exists a synergistic effect due to capacity controlling and adaptive equalizing.

    We apply Fahlman and Lebiere's (FL) algorithm to network synthesis and incremental learning by making use of already-trained networks, each performing a specified task, to design a system that performs a global or extended task without destroying the information gained by the previously trained nets. Investigation shows that the synthesized or expanded FL networks have generalization ability superior to Back propagation (BP) networks in which the number of newly added hidden units must be pre-specified.

    The robust finite settling time stabilization problem is considered for a multivariable discrete time plant with structured uncertainties. Finite settling time (FST) stability of a feedback system is a notion introduced recently for discrete time systems as a generalization of the dead-beat response. The uncertain plant treated in this paper is described by (E0+ΣKi=1qiEi)x(t+1)(A0+ΣKi=1qiAi)x(t)+(B0+ΣKi=1qiBi)u(t), and y(t)=(C0+ΣKi=1qiCi)x(t) where Ei, Ai, Bi and Ci (0iK) are prescribed real matrices and qi (1iK) are uncertain parameters restricted to prescribed intervals [qi, i]. It is shown in this paper that a controller robustly FST stabilizes such an uncertain plant, if, the uncertain plant satisfies some conditions, and the controller simultaneously FST stabilizes a finite set of plants. The result leads to a testable necessary and sufficient condition of the existence of a solution to the robust FST stabilization problem, and a systematic method of designing a robust FST stable feedback system, in the case where the plant contains only one uncertain parameter.

  • Speaker Adaptation Based on Vector Field Smoothing

    This paper describes a new supervised speaker adaptation method based on vector field smoothing, for small size adaptation data. This method assumes that the correspondence of feature vectors between speakers can be viewed as a kind of smooth vector field, and interpolation and smoothing of the correspondence are introduced into the adaptation process for higher adaptation performance with small size data. The proposed adaptation method was applied to discrete HMM based speech recognition and evaluated in Japanese phoneme and phrase recognition experiments. Using 10 words as the adaptation data, the proposed method produced almost the same results as the conventional codebook mapping method with 25 words. These experiments clearly comfirmed the effectiveness of the proposed method.

In this paper, we will describe our approach to understanding and describing the problem, from a process/product relation view, and synchronization/concurrent view. Also, we will show that a description of the problem is translated for execution and its correctness is validated.

    A new method for interpolating boundary function values and first derivatives of a triangle is presented. This method has a relatively simple construction and involves no compatibility constraints. The polynomial precision set of the interpolation function constructed includes all the cubic polynomial and less. The testing results show that the surface produced by the proposed method is better than the ones by weighted combination schemes in both of the fairness and preciseness.

    The problem of two-dimensional scattering of electromagnetic waves by a grating with several strips arbitrarily oriented in one period is analyzed by means of the Wiener-Hopf technique together with the formulation using the concept of the mutual field. A formulation for the analysis of multiple scattering from the grating is based on the representation of the scattered field by a grating composed of one strip in one period. The Wiener-Hopf equations and a representation of the scattered wave are obtained. The characteristic of the sampling function is used to expand the unknown function associated with the field on the strip into a series, and then the Wiener-Hopf equations are reduced to a set of simultaneous equations. For evaluation of the convergence and the errors in the numerical results, the relative error with respect to the extrapolated value and the square error for satisfaction of the boundary condition are computed. From numerical comparison of the present method with other various methods, it is found that the present method provides us accurate results. Some numerical examples of the reflection coefficients are presented for the reflection grating and transmission gratings.
