  • A Survey of Concurrency Control for Real-Time Database Systems

    Real-time database systems have the properties of database and real-time systems. This means they must keep timing constraints of transactions as required in real-time systems, and at the same time ensure database consistency as required in database systems. Real-time concurrency control is a general approach for resolving this conflict. In this type of control, a concurrency control technique for database systems is integrated with a task scheduling technique for real-time systems. This paper surveys previous studies on real-time concurrency control and considers future research directions.

    An information retrieval system based on a dynamic thesaurus was developed utilizing the connectionist approach. The dynamic thesaurus consists of nodes, which represent each term of a thesaurus, and links, which represent the connections between nodes. Term information that is automatically extracted from user's relevant documents is used to change node weights and generate links. Thus, node weights and links reflect a user's interest. A document retrieval experiment using the dynamic thesaurus was conducted in which both a high recall rate and a high precision rate were achieved.

    This paper describes a fiber-optic microcell radio system with a spectral delivery switch to meet traffic demands. Optical link performance is discussed from the view points of link loss and noise figure aimed at system design. The theoretical carrier-to-noise ratio (CNR) performance is shown as a function of the input electrical power of the laser and the received optical power. Improvement of dynamic range defined by both CNR and intermodulation distortion is proposed by using the frequency modulation (FM) technique. The experimental results using the proposed technique indicate that the performance is much better than that of conventional methods. Moreover, economical diversity planning delivery methods over fibers are presented. This strategy will provide more cost effective and flexible networks.

  • Comparison of Traveling Wave External Modulator Microwave Mixers

    The performance of a traveling wave Mach-Zehnder external optical modulator (EOM) mixer is described and compared with a conventional diode mixer's performance. Additionally, by incorporating external circuitry, the EOM mixer can provide single sideband suppression in addition to the inherent local oscillator suppression. The basic frequency mixing function of the EOM mixer is first described theoretically and then extended to the sideband suppression case. The performance of both configurations is also presented. Achievable electrical isolation between LO (carrier) and RF (upconverted data signal at LOIF) frequencies is greater than 95 dB and total link conversion loss is 37 dB in this demonstration with a laser diode source. Sideband suppression of greater than 43 dB with respect to the desired sideband at the photodetector output is achieved.

  • Design Considerations for High Frequency Active Bandpass Filters

    This paper describes design considerations for high frequency active BPFs up to 100 MHz. The major design issues for high frequency active filters are the excess phase shift in the integrators and high power consumption of the integrators. Typical bipolar transistor based transconductors such as the Gilbert gain cell and the linearized transconductor with two asymmetric emitter-coupled pairs have been analyzed and compared. It has been clarified that the power consumption of the linearized transconductor can be much smaller than that of the Gilbert gain cell because of its high transconductance to working current ratio while maintaining a signal to noise ratio of the same order. A simple high-speed fully differential linearized transconductor cell is proposed with emitter follower buffers and resistive loads for excess phase compensation. A novel gyrator based transformation for the LC ladder BPF has been introduced. This transformation has resulted in a structure with simple capacitor-coupled active resonators which exactly preserves the original transfer function. A fourth order 10.7 MHz BPF IC was designed using the proposed transconductors. It was fabricated and has demonstrated the usefulness of the proposed approach. In addition, an experimental 100 MHz second order BPF IC with Q=14 has been successfully implemented indicating the potential of the proposed approach.

  • Improvement of the Performance of a Shielded Velocity-Matched Ti:LiNbO3 Optical Modulator by Using a Ridge Structure

    A shielded velocity-matched Ti:LiNbO3 optical modulator with a ridge is investigated. The analytical method is based on the second-order triangular element finite element method. The thickness of the coplanar waveguide traveling-wave electrode is taken into consideration and the relationship between the electrode thickness and optimum overlaid layer thickness is clarified. Incorporating a ridge into these Ti:LiNbO3 optical modulators can improve not only their modulation bandwidth but also their driving voltage.

    This paper proposes and investigates an adaptive equalizer with diversity-combining over a multipath fading channel. It consists of two space-diversity antennas and a Ts/2-spaced decision-feedback-equalizer (DFE). Received signals from the two antennas are alternatively switched and fed into the feed forward-filter of DFE. We call this structure a Switched Input Combining Equalizer with diversity-combining (SICE). By using an SICE, the receiver structure for combining diversity equalization can be simplified, because it needs only two receiver sections up to IF BPF. The bit error rate (BER) performance of SICE was evaluated by both computer simulation and experiment over a multipath fading channel. We experimentally confirmed the excellent BER performance, around 1% of BER over a multipath fading channel at 160Hz of maximum doppler fading frequency. Therefore, the proposed SICE is applicable to highly reliable transmission in the 1.5-GHz-band mobile radio.

    This paper proposes fiber optic link configurations for use in microwave and millimeter-wave transmission Higher frequencies,such as millimeter-waves, are well suited to transmission of broadband signals. Photodiodes can operate simultaneously as optical detectors and microwave frequency mixers thanks to their inherent nonlinearities. This allows us to increase the output radio frequncy. But, this also generates undesired spurious frequencies, necessitating the use of microwave filters. We discuss here two fiber optic link configurations, i.e., balanced/image canceling photodiode mixing links utilizing the combination of microwave functional components and optical devices to suppress the local/image frequency without filters. These configurations are experimentally investigated at microwave frequencies and local/image frequency suppression is successfully demonstrated.

  • Performance of Decision Feedback Equalizers in Simulated Urban and Indoor Radio Channels

    A Decision Feedback Equalizer (DFE) structure with a varying number of tap lengths was used with a recursive least squares (RLS) algorithm to determine tradeoffs between equalizer size and performance in mobile and portable digital radio systems. A mobile channel simulator, SMRCIM, was used to demonstrate how much an equalizer can improve the BER in real world urban channels. The results show that at 850MHz, the DFE is unable to improve the BER when the mobile terminal exceeds speeds of 115km/h for U.S. Digital Cellular systems. The performance of adaptive equalization for indoor high data rate systems was evaluated using the indoor channel simulator SIRCIM, and we found that DFEs have excellent performance for indoor radio channels. For simple structures, the BER is less than 10-3 at 15dB Eb/NO using coherent QPSK modulation. Finally, an equalizer structure for non-coherent π/4 DQPSK modulation was developed and simulation results are presented.

  • Characterization of Inverted Slot Line for Travelling Wave Optical Modulator

    The inverted slot line (ISL) has been propoaed for millimeter-wave LiNbO3 optical modulator. It is simple in structure, and capable of achieving the perfect velocity matching between carrier and modulating waves. The excellent performance of the ISL optical modulator has been demonstrated at 100 GHz, and the extension into the 50 GHz range is being expected. This paper addresses the analysis of the ISL based on the spectral domain approach. The major results obtained here are the demonstration of the perfect velocity matching not only at 10 GHz but also at 50 GHz, and the characterization of the ISL in terms of effective refractive index, characteristic impedance, overlap integral factor and transmission loss. The depth of optical phase modulation is also estimated at 50 GHz to show a promising performance in the millimeter-wave frequency range. The effective refractive index and the characteristic impedance are found to be theoretically predictable, but the field profile, the overlap integral factor and the transmission loss are not necessarily in good agreement with measurements. As a result of analysis, it can be concluded that the Y-cut substrate is superior to the Z-cut substrate in the following respects: 1. Coupling with the surface wave mode hardly occurs near the operating frequency range. 2. The perfect velocity matching can be attained with a larger spacing between the electrode and the ground plane. 3. The transmission loss is smaller. 4. The field intensity and the voerlap integral factor do not seem to be much deteriorated in the actual ISL.

    In general, the work on developing an expert system has relied on domain experts to provide all domain-specific knowledge. The method for acquiring knowledge directly from experts is inadequate in oriental medicine because it is hard to find an appropriate expert and the development cost becomes too high. Therefore, we have developed two effective methods for acquiring knowledge indirectly from sample cases. One is to refine a constructed knowledge base by using sample cases. The other is to train a neural network by using sample cases. To demonstrate the effectiveness of our methods, we have implemented two prototype systems; the Oriental Medicine Expert System (OMES) and the Oriental Medicine Neural Network (OMNN). These systems have been compared with the system with the knowledge base built directly by domain experts (OLDS). Among these systems, OMES are considered to be superior to other systems in terms of performances, development costs, and practicalness. In this paper, we present our methods, and describe our experimental and comparison results.

    Recently, making good use of the advantages of optical fibers such as wide bandwidth and low loss, it has been investigated to apply optical fiber link to microcellular mobile communication systems. This system allows complex equipment to be located at microcell control station, and can simplify the equipment of microcell base stations compared with the conventional systems. In this paper, we analyze the performance of optical fiber link for microcellular mobile communication systems, taking radio link fading and optical link nonlinear distortions into consideration. From the calculated results, it is disclosed that the effect of both items does not generate the significant excess CNR degradation, and the correct CNR can be approximately calculated by using CNR of non-faded case. And it is also disclosed that the degradation of CNR due to optical link nonlinearity is slightly improved by taking adjacent channel signal fade into consideration.

    Theoretical prediction of propagation is required for the future urban mobile communications, in order to make possible precise and universal prediction for arbitrary conditions. The necessity and the fundamental concept of theoretical prediction are introduced, and the theoretical prediction of mean field strength in urban areas is reviewed and discussed. Theoretical method is important particularly in prediction of multipath delay characteristics, in relation to the prediction of error rates in digital mobile radio communications.

  • A Leapfrog Synthesis of Complex Analog Filters

    Complex filters are used to synthesize real filters in digital signal processing, but few in analog one. In this paper, we propose a leapfrog synthesis of complex analog filters. By shifting frequency response of an LCR network along the ω-axis, we have a complex filter with imaginary resistances, which is called an "LCRRi filter." The complex resonator is then used to simulate series- or parallel-arms of the LCRRi filter. We analyze nonideal properties of the complex resonator due to finite gain-bandwidth product of operational amplifiers and propose a compensation method to put a pole on correct location. Experimental results show good performance of the proposed method.

    Power-law decay of current for the application of step-function voltage observed for amorphous materials can be expressed by an admittance sa(0a1) of a linear diode using complex angular frequency s. It is shown that power-law decay can be interpreted as a superposition of exponential decays having fractally distributed relaxation times and simulated using RC networks. By use of a similar manner, admittance s-b (0b1) showing the relation of duality can be simulated using RL networks. According to these methods, we can synthesize the admittance involving non-integer exponents systematically.

    Kleene-Stone algebra is both Kleene algebra and Stone algebra. The set of Kleene-Stone logic functions discussed in this paper is one of the models of Kleene-Stone algebra, and they can easily represent the concepts of necessity and possibility which are important concepts for many-valued logic systems. Main results of this paper are that the followings are clarified: a necessary and sufficient condition for a function to be a Kleene-Stone logic function and a formula representing the number of n-variable Kleene-Stone logic functions.

    An optical On-Off Keyed (OOK) pulse is often stretched in dispersive channels, thus producing intersymbol interference (ISI) and degrading the performance. In this paper, error probability is presented for a convolutionally encoded optical OOK channels with ISI. Both ISI-matched and ISI-mismatched decoders are taken into account in the error probability analysis. The encoded optical OOK signal is received by Avalanche Photo Diode (APD) and the number of APD output photo-electrons is counted for soft decision Viterbi decoding. Error probability is derived for a 3-bit and an ideal soft decision schemes in ISI-mismatched decoder and for an ideal soft decision scheme in ISI-matched decoder. Numerical results demonstrate the effects of mismatching or 3-bit soft decision scheme. Some computer simulations are carried out to confirm the validity of the analysis.

    A high resolution iterative algorithm for estimating the direction-of-arrival of multiple wide band sources is proposed in this paper. For equally spaced array structure, two Unitary Transform based approaches are proposed in frequency domain for signal subspace processing in both coherent multipath and incoherent environment. Given a priori knowledge of the initial estimates of DOA, with proper spatial prefiltering to separate multiple groups of closely spaced sources, our proposed algorithm is shown to have high resolution capability even in coherent multipath environment without reducing the angular resolution, compared with the use of subarray. Compared with the conventional algorithm, the performance by the proposed algorithm is shown by the simulations to be improved under low Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) while the performance is not degraded under high SNR. Moreover the computation burden involved in the eigencomputation is largely reduced by introducing the Pesudo-Hermitian matrix approximation.

    In the paper entitled "The effect of varying routing probability in two parallel queues with dynamic routing under a threshold-type scheduling", Kojima et al. derive an expression in the form of a product of powers for the state probabilities of a threshold-type shortest queue problem. In this note it is demonstrated that this expression is essentially more complicated and has the form of an infinite sum of products of powers. In fact, Kojima et al. find the first term in this infinite sum only.

    Recent progress on photoexcited process applications to fabricating of VLSI and flat panel devices in Japan has been reviewed. The excimer laser melt technique makes it possible to form large-grain poly-Si film on a glass substrate, improving TFT electrical characteristics, and to fill metals into high-aspect-ratio contact holes in VLSI metallization. Scanning of CW laser in poly-Si film led to growth of a single-crystal Si layer on SiO2 to fabricate 3-D (dimensional) devices successfully. Direct writing with pyrolytic reaction was put into practice for interconnection restructuring. In the photochemical process, lower temperature epitaxial growth of Si and dry cleaning of a Si wafer employing Hg lamp irradiation were noted. Directional etching was performed by sidewall film formation, while resolution of better than 0.5 µm was difficult to obtain due to diffraction limit. It was proposed that higher resolution would be obtained by introduction of a nonlinear process which enhanced pattern contrast.
