  • A Design Method for Logical Topologies with Stable Packet Routing in IP over WDM Network

    An IP (Internet Protocol) over WDM network is expected to be an infrastructure for the next-generation Internet by directly carrying IP packets on the WDM-based network. Among several architectures for IP over WDM networks, one promising way is to overlay a logical topology consisting of lightpaths over the physical WDM network so that IP packets are carried on the lightpaths. The conventional methods for designing the logical topology have been focusing on maximizing throughput of the traffic. However, when the WDM network is applied to IP, the end-to-end path provided by the logical topology of the WDM network is not suitable to IP since IP has its own metrics for route selection. In this paper, we propose a new heuristic algorithm to design a logical topology by considering the delay between nodes as an objective metric. This algorithm uses a non-bifurcated flow deviation to obtain a set of routes that IP packets are expected to traverse. Our proposal is then compared with conventional methods in terms of the average packet delays and throughput. It is shown that our method becomes effective when the number of wavelengths is a limited resource.

  • Decision Tree Based Disambiguation of Semantic Roles for Korean Adverbial Postpositions

    The case postpositions usually have more than one semantic role in Korean. The adverbial postpositions among various postpositions especially make the development of Korean-based machine translation system difficult, because they have more semantic roles than others. In this paper, we describe a new method for resolving semantic ambiguities of adverbial postpositions using decision tree induction. The lack of training examples in decision tree induction is overcome by clustering words into classes using a kind of greedy algorithm. The cross validation results show that the presented method achieves 76.5% of accuracy on the average, which is 20.3% improvement over the baseline method.

    In this paper, our aim is to extract real-time movement-related potentials, especially readiness-potentials, from EEGs with a small number of scalp electrodes. We proposed a method composed of independent component analysis (ICA), dipole tracing (DT) and scalp Laplacian methods. The proposed method shows a good real-time RP extraction capability from a single-trial of movement by means of the selection of EEGs with high reliability based on the DT and the improvement of the spatial resolution of the scalp potentials based on the scalp Laplacian.

  • Airborne Measurement of the Sea Surface Wind Vector by a Microwave Radar Altimeter at Low Speed of Flight

    A pilot needs operational information about wind over sea as well as wave height to provide safety of hydroplane landing on water. Near-surface wind speed and direction can be obtained with an airborne microwave scatterometer, a radar designed for measuring the scatter characteristics of a surface. Mostly narrow-beam antennas are applied for such wind measurement. Unfortunately, a microwave narrow-beam antenna has considerable size that hampers its placement on flying apparatus. In this connection, a possibility to apply a conventional airborne radar altimeter as a scatterometer with a nadir-looking wide-beam antenna in conjunction with simultaneous range Doppler discrimination techniques for recovering the wind vector over sea at low speed of flight is discussed, and measuring algorithms of sea surface wind speed and direction are proposed. The principle considered and algorithms proposed in the paper can be used for creation an airborne radar system for operational measurement of the sea roughness characteristics and for safe landing of a hydroplane on water.

  • On a Transmission Line Lowpass Filter Using Radial-Line Stubs

    On a transmission line lowpass filter fabricated on a printed circuit board using open-circuited microstrip straight-line stubs, the frequency at the edge of a passband or stopband tends to be higher than the frequency determined by the filter synthesis theory. One of the reasons for this is thought to be the interconnection of a low-impedance straight-line stub and transmission lines. The length of a constituent transmission line cannot be determined precisely because of the finite width. Therefore, as a means of avoiding the frequency shift between a trial circuit and a theoretical one, we first introduce a radial-line stub, and then show the equivalency of a radial-line stub to a straight-line stub in a range of zero to the first resonant frequency from the view point of their input impedances. Dimensional data of radial-line stubs corresponding to low-impedance straight-line stubs are investigated with respect to examples of three-, five- and seven-element Butterworth and Chebyshev filters. It was found that frequency characteristics of trial lowpass filters using radial-line stubs agree well with theoretical characteristics known as the Butterworth or Chebyshev.

  • A Study on Precursor Signal Extraction with PCA for Predicting Significant Earthquakes

    The tectonic activities that precede significant earthquakes release electromagnetic (EM) waves that can be used as earthquake precursors. We have been observing EM radiation in the ELF (extremely low frequency) band at about 40 observation stations in Japan for predicting significant earthquakes. The recorded signals contain, however, several noise components generated from the ionosphere, human activity, and so on. Most background noise in observed signal is attributed to lightning in the tropics. This paper proposes method based on PCA (principal component analysis) to extract signals from large data sets. The good performance of the proposed method is confirmed.

    This paper proposes an optical access networks that guaranteed QoS in bidirections. Our scheme is the PON (Passive Optical Network) systems using OCDM (Optical Code Division Multiplexing) technology. For the bidirectional 100 Mbps guaranteed, we examined the simple decision circuit, code length (the number of chips), the number of simultaneously accesses and transmission distance. Furthermore, we reported the results that evaluated prototype of speed-down (4 Mbps, 16 chips) for the functional check of simple decision circuit.

  • A Formula on the Hermite Expansion and Its Application to a Random Boundary Value Problem

    A new formula on the Hermite expansion is presented in an explicit form. An application of the formula is given to a random boundary value problem: a plane wave reflection from a flat plane, of which position is randomly distributed in the normal direction, is presented. Several numerical results are given for a verification of the formula and for a discussion of the exact behavior of the fluctuation part of the reflection power.

    A mathematical theory is proposed, based on the concept of functional analysis, suitable for operation of network systems extraordinarily complicated and diversified on large scales, through connected-block structures. Fundamental conditions for existence and evaluation of system behaviors of such network systems are obtained in a form of fixed point theorem for system of nonlinear mappings.

    In this paper, we propose a fast full-search block matching algorithm for motion estimation, based on binary edge information. The binary edge information allows a faster search by reducing the computational complexity. It also reduces error, which is generated by the block located on the boundary of moving objects. After we transform the input image into an edge-based image using Sobel masks, we convert the result into a binary edge image using median-cut quantization. We then perform block matching using the binary edge image. If there exists blocks such that the error of the binary block matching exceeds threshold, we only perform edge intensity-based block matching within those blocks. We improve computational efficiency by eliminating an unnecessary searching process in no-motion regions. Simulation results have shown that the proposed method reduces the computational complexity and provides similar PSNR performance to the Full Search Block Matching Algorithm (FS-BMA)

    In this paper, we consider the problem of estimating the time-varying directions-of-arrival (DOAs) of coherent narrowband cyclostationary signals impinging on a uniform linear array (ULA). By exploiting the cyclostationarity of most communication signals, we investigate a new computationally efficient subspace-based direction estimation method without eigendecomposition and spatial smoothing (SS) processes. The proposed method uses the inherently temporal property of incident signals and a subarray scheme to decorrelate the signal coherency and to suppress the noise and interfering signals, while the null subspace is obtained from the resulting cyclic correlation matrix through a linear operation. Then an on-line implementation of this method is presented for tracking the DOAs of slowly moving coherent signals. The proposed algorithm is computationally simple and has a good tracking performance. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified through numerical examples.

    A problem of estimating biopotential sources in the brain based on EEG signals observed on the scalp is known as an important inverse problem of electrophysiology. Usually there is no closed-form solution for this problem and it requires iterative techniques such as the Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm. Considering the nonlinear properties of inverse problem, and signal to noise ratio inherent in EEG signals, a back propagation neural network has been recently proposed as a solution. In this paper, we investigated the properties of neural networks and its localization accuracy for single dipole source localization. Based on the results of extensive studies, we concluded the neural networks are highly feasible in single-source localization with a small number of electrodes (18 electrodes), also examined the usefulness of this method for clinical application with a case of epilepsy.

    The millimeter wave bandpass filter using the Whispering-Gallery mode (WG mode) dielectric disk resonators is presented in this paper. A 4 stage maximally flat bandpass filter is constructed with the PTFE disk resonators. For the filter design, the coupling coefficients of this mode in the coupled disk resonators are calculated by an approximated separation of variables method. Furthermore, the external Q values of the disk resonator excited by a dielectric waveguide are investigated experimentally. Designed center frequency is 60 GHz and 3 dB band width is 150 MHz. Furthermore, as an attempt to improve the spurious characteristics, another filter structure which consists of some kinds of dielectric disk is tested. As a result, some spurious responses are reduced considerably.

  • 25 GHz Band Active Integrated Antenna for Broadband Mobile Wireless Access Systems

    This paper first presents an active integrated antenna configuration designed for broadband mobile wireless access systems using the 25-GHz band. This active integrated antenna comprises a microstrip antenna array and RF front-end circuits adopting spatial power combining schemes for reduced power consumption of the power amplifiers. Furthermore, the antenna and RF circuits are integrated into each side of a thick copper backing plate and both are connected through microstrip line /slot transitions. The developed active integrated antenna achieves the output power of 14.6 dBm and a noise figure of less than 5 dB. The wireless system using the developed active integrated antenna achieves a 6-dB improvement in the packet error rate compared to that using a passive antenna with the same array design as the active integrated antenna. Furthermore, we obtained the first license of the active integrated antenna for commercial use in high-speed wireless communication systems in Japan.

    The OptIPuter is a radical distributed visualization, teleimmersion, data mining and computing architecture. Observing that the exponential growth rates in bandwidth and storage are now much higher than Moore's Law, this major new project of several universities--currently six in the US and one in Amsterdam--exploits a new world of computing in which the central architectural element is optical networking. This transition is caused by the use of parallelism, as in supercomputing a decade ago. However, this time the parallelism is in multiple wavelengths of light, or lambdas, on single optical fibers, creating a LambdaGrid. Providing applications-centric middleware to control the LambdaGrid on a regional and global scale is a key goal of the OptIPuter and StarLight Optical Switching projects.

    We present a new method called the slope nucleation method (SNM) for the growth of high-quality organic 4-dimethylamino-N-methyl-4-stilbazolium tosylate (DAST) crystals. The SNM features the ability to control the nucleation position and the growth orientation of DAST crystals in spontaneous nucleated growth. X-ray diffraction (XRD) rocking curve measurements indicate that the SNM is effective for obtaining high-quality DAST crystals as compared to conventional spontaneous nucleation methods. We evaluated the electro-optic (EO) properties of DAST crystals by an external EO probing technique because DAST crystals are expected to be used in transverse-field probing. DAST crystals exhibits nearly five-times EO sensitivity enhancement as compared to inorganic KTiOPO4 (KTP) crystals at 90 kHz. The larger EO signal power obtained from the DAST crystal was almost constant at low frequencies (30 Hz to 90 kHz), whereas the KTP crystal could not respond below 180 Hz. We also observed excellent signals at all measured points due to the improved crystallinity of the crystal grown by the SNM.

    We report on the first demonstration of single sideband (SSB) modulated time stretch system. In addition, we present an analytical model relating the system performance to the phase and amplitude mismatches in the SSB modulator. The results show that, fortuitously, the system is tolerant to such mismatches. In particular, using commercially available components,the dispersion induced power penalty can be kept below 2.5 dB over 4-20 GHz bandwidth for any stretch factor. The experiments demonstrate 120 Gsample/s real-time capture of a 20 GHz SSB-modulated microwave signal.

    The authors propose a circular polarization generator using a square waveguide with L-type probe located on a side wall of waveguide. The sides of the L-probe forming the right angle are placed perpendicular to the direction of propagation. The position of the right angle is kept at a distance of a quarter-wave length from the side wall. The device provides 27% bandwidth for 3 dB axial ratio at 8.4 GHz on azimuth interval of 160.

  • A Micro-Power Analog IC for Battery-Operated Systems

    The design of the analog part of a mixed analog-digital IC for a commercial wireless burglar alarm system is presented as an example of a very low-power VLSI design for battery-operated systems. The main constraint is battery life, which must be at least five years (with standard camera-battery). An operational amplifier, a power supply monitor and an oscillator are the core of the design. The operational amplifier absorbs 1.5 µA while the entire analog part absorbs 4 µA. Measures on each single part show compliance with specification. Test on working environment show its full functionality. Even though the example is application specific, the design solutions and each single element can also be utilized in many other battery-operated low-frequency devices (e.g. environmental parameter monitoring).

    The system uses spectral shaping of a supercontinuum source followed by wavelength-to-time mapping to generate ultra wideband RF waveforms with arbitrary modulation. It employs an adaptive computer control to mitigate the non-ideal features inherent in the optical source and in the spectrum modulation process. As proof of concept, ultra-wideband frequency hopped CDMA waveforms are demonstrated.
