MT19937 is a kind of Mersenne Twister, which is a pseudo-random number generator. This study presents new designs for a MT19937 circuit suitable for custom computing machinery for high-performance scientific simulations. Our designs can generate multiple random numbers per cycle (multi-port design). The estimated throughput of a 52-port design was 262 Gbps, which is 115 times higher than the software on a Pentium 4 (2.53 GHz) processor. Multi-port designs were proven to be more cost-effective than using multiple single-port designs. The initialization circuit can be included without performance loss in exchange for a slight increase of logic scale.

We had recently measured a chromatic dispersion of optical fiber and a time delay of chirped fiber grating based on a bidirectional modulation of an optical intensity modulator. In this paper, we analyze characteristics of the chromatic dispersion measurement method using a bidirectional modulation of an optical intensity modulator, and give a detailed explanation about the selection of measurement setup parameters to achieve an accurate measurement. We also propose a modified measurement system to decrease relative intensity noise caused by the bidirectional transmission through a device under test.

It is known that the thickness of the λ/4 type EM wave absorber having a resistive film with the capacitive reactance is thinner than 1/4 wavelength. This paper investigates EM wave absorbers using the resistive film with capacitive reactance. We introduced the impedance into the resistive film, and then clarified the relationship between the impedance and the matching thickness in the single layer EM wave absorber. Practically, we carried out to grasp the impedance of the resistive films, which were prepared using the conductive flake powder. As the results, we have proven that the matching thickness in the single layer EM wave absorber could be realized 0.17 λ-0.09 λ in the frequency range from 2 GHz to 8 GHz by using these resistive films. We also fabricated the single resistive layer and the double resistive layers EM wave absorber using these resistive films for Dedicated Short Range Communications (DSRC) and wireless Local Area Network (LAN), in which the matching thickness could be reduced to 45% and 30%, respectively, as compared with the each absorber using the non-capacitive reactance.

This paper aims at challenging Bernstein's problem called the "Degrees-of-Freedom problem," which remains unsolved from both the physiological and robotics viewpoints. More than a half century ago A.N. Bernstein observed that "dexterity" residing in human limb motion emerges from accumulated involvement of multi-joint movements in surplus DOF. It is also said in robotics that redundancy of DOFs in robot mechanisms may contribute to enhancement of dexterity and versatility. However, kinematic redundancy incurs a problem of ill-posedness of inverse kinematics from task-description space to joint space. In the history of robotics research such ill-posedness problem of inverse-kinematics has not yet been attacked directly but circumvented by introducing an artificial performance index and determining uniquely an inverse kinematics solution by minimizing it. Instead of it, this paper introduces two novel concepts named "stability on a manifold" and "transferability to a submanifold" in treating the case of human multi-joint movements of reaching and shows that a sensory feedback from task space to joint space together with a set of adequate dampings enables any solution to the overall closed-loop dynamics to converge naturally and coordinately to a lower-dimensional manifold describing a set of joint states fulfilling a given motion task. This means that, without considering any type of inverse kinematics, the reaching task can be accomplished by a sensory feedback with adequate choice of a stiffness parameter and damping coefficients. It is also shown that these novel concepts can cope with annoying characteristics called "variability" of redundant joint motions seen typically in human skilled reaching. Finally, it is pointed out that the proposed control signals can be generated in a feedforward manner in case of human limb movements by referring to mechano-chemical characteristics of activation of muscles. Based on this observation, generation of human skilled movements of reaching can be interpreted in terms of the proposed "Virtual-Spring" hypothesis instead of the traditional "Equilibrium-Point" hypothesis.

This paper makes an examination of BER (bit error rate) performance in 22 MIMO (Multi-Input Multi-Output) systems using spatial multiplexing in a LOS (line-of-sight) environment by analysis using the eigenvalue and eigenvector of the channel matrix and simulation. It is shown that BER performance in a LOS environment is dependent on the phase relation of direct paths and the minimum squared absolute value of the eigenvalue, which are determined by the propagated distance. A technique for improving BER performance in a LOS environment is then considered based on these findings. A receive antenna selection (RAS) technique is presented which uses the minimum squared absolute value of the channel matrix eigenvalue. Proof is then given that BER performance is improved using this RAS technique, thus making clear the validity of this approach for obtaining optimum BER performance in a LOS environment.
Some statistical analyses of modulo-2 added binary sequences are generalized to modulo-p added p-ary sequences. First, we theoretically evaluate statistics of sequences obtained by modulo-p addition of two general p-ary random variables. Next, we consider statistics of modulo-p added chaotic p-ary sequences generated by a class of one-dimensional chaotic maps.
Multilayered filters with a dielectric distribution along their thickness forming a one-dimensional quasi-fractal structure are theoretically analyzed, focusing on exposing their resonant properties in order to understand a dielectric Menger's sponge resonator [4],[5]. "Quasi-fractal" refers to the triadic Cantor set with finite generation. First, a novel calculation method that has the ability to deal with filters with fine fractal structures is derived. This method takes advantage of Clifford algebra based on the theory of thin-film optics. The method is then applied to classify resonant modes and, especially, to investigate quality factors for them in terms of the following design parameters: a dielectric constant, a loss tangent, and a stage number. The latter determines fractal structure. Finally, behavior of the filters with perfect fractal structure is considered. A crucial finding is that the high quality factor of the modes is not due to the complete self-similarity, but rather to the breaking of such a fractal symmetry.
In this paper, we briefly describe situations that may cause HFN de-synchronization for ciphering applications in UMTS. Detection methods of HFN de-synchronization are discussed and the lower bound of the HFN de-synchronization perceptibility is derived. A supporting simulation result of the perceptibility is given. Then, an Automatic Recovery of HFN Synchronization (ARHS) algorithm is presented. The average lost PDU number of the ARHS algorithm is derived and supported by simulation results. The average lost SDU number is used as the figure of merit for HFN synchronization recovery procedures. Simulation results of the average lost SDU number show that the ARHS algorithm is quite effective to recover HFN synchronization after HFN de-synchronization situations happen.

We studied 10 Gbit/s-based time-spreading and wave-length-hopping (TS-WH) optical code division multiplexing (OCDM) using fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs). To apply it to such the high bit rate system more than ten gigabit, two techniques are adopted. One is encoding with the maximum spreading time of 400 ps, which is four times as data bit duration, to encode without shortening chip duration. Another is encoder design. The apodized refractive index profile to the unit-gratings composing the encoder is designed to encode the pulses with 10-20 ps width at 10 Gbit/s rate. Using these techniques, 210 Gbit/s OCDM is demonstrated successfully. In this scheme, transmission distance is limited due to dispersion effect because the signal has wide bandwidth to assign a wavelength-hopping pattern. We use no additional devices to compensate the dispersion, in order to construct simple and cost-effective system. Novel FBG encoder is designed to incorporate both encoding and compensating of group delay among chip pulses within one device. We confirm the extension of transmission distance in the TS-WH OCDM from the demonstration over 40 km-long single mode fiber.
The resource allocation problem in multi-agent systems is one of the crucial problems hindering the development of multi-agent technologies. This study demonstrates that "time delay" functions as an effective factor in a resource allocation, contrasting to the conventional real-time oriented multi-agent paradigm by 1) introducing a "fickle" agent, whose own strategy fluctuates randomly, and 2) an agent repository mechanism. This study also demonstrates that in the resource allocation process, time delay induces dramatic changes in performance, the specific phenomenon is the so-called "phase transition phenomenon". This finding means emergence of the phase transition is cited as a major factor governing multi-agent system performance. This knowledge is of essential importance in the regulation in multi-agent performance.
Fast and simple algorithm of a parity checker for a large residue numbers is presented. A new set of RNS moduli with 2r-(2l1) form for fast modular multiplication is proposed. The proposed RNS moduli has a large dynamic range for a large RNS number. The parity of a residue number can be checked by the Chinese remainder theorem (CRT). A CRT-based parity checker is simply organized by the Montgomery reduction method (MRM), implemented by using multipliers and the carry-save adder array. We present a fast parity checker with minimal hardware processed in three clock cycles for 32-bit RNS modulus set.
A statistically uniform E-field is created in a reverberation chamber by moving mechanical stirrers to vary boundary conditions. The uniformity of the spatial electric-field distribution in an ideal reverberation chamber can be theoretically estimated by calculating the probability density function of its distribution. However, uniformity in an actual chamber is affected by the dimensions of the chamber and the structure of the stirrers. We experimentally and theoretically evaluated the effect of stirrers on the spatial uniformity of the average, median, and maximum electric-field distributions. When the dimensions of a chamber equipped with effective stirrers are large compared to the wavelength at the operating frequency, that is, when resonant modes above approximately 105 exist below the operating frequency, the spatial uniformity experimentally evaluated agrees well with theoretical values estimated by calculating the probability density function of their distributions.

The measured values of electromagnetic disturbances should strongly correlate with degradation in the communication quality of digital wireless communication systems. The Amplitude Probability Distribution (APD) of a disturbance represents statistical information as applicable measurement readings that meet the above requirement. In this paper, correlations between APD measurements of disturbances and the bit error rate (BER) as a quality degradation index for victim systems are quantitatively investigated. Disturbance regulation by APD measurements is discussed from the viewpoint of protecting systems from disturbances. This investigation specifically considers the situation in which a repetition pulse disturbance impacts PHS and W-CDMA systems assumed as victims. The results confirm high correlations between the APD and BER not only experimentally but also theoretically under some conditions. A disturbance regulation criterion based on APD measurements is thus proposed for compliance testing of electronic appliances with the potential to act as disturbance noise sources.

Optical connectors for printed circuit board interfaces are required for the implementation of reliable high-density multi-fiber connection. We developed a 16-fiber fiber physical contact (FPC) connector with an MU connector coupling mechanism and a compact shutter to meet this requirement. In the FPC connector, two arrays of fibers are aligned in micro-holes without ferrules. A micro-hole array is a key component as regards the optical characteristics of the FPC connector. We developed a 16-ch micro-hole array composed of injection molded zirconia ceramics. The 16-fiber FPC connectors with a zirconia ceramic micro-hole array had an insertion loss of less than 0.3 dB with an average value of 0.07 dB and a return loss of over 45 dB. The optical characteristics remained stable in environmental and mechanical tests.

The increasing number of channels in dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) systems has led to the need for wiring involving a large number of optical fibers in the system racks. We have developed a novel scalable optical fiber wiring system designed to realize as many as 10,000-fiber shuffled interconnections without fiber congestion. We propose a scheme for constructing a large-scale shuffler capable of permuting interconnected fibers that employs plural optical fiber sheets, and for arranging optical fibers without congestion in racks. We constructed a 16,384-fiber shuffler system with sixty-four 256-fiber shuffler sheets and 16-fiber fiber physical contact (FPC) connectors for a 128128 switch system with 1128 planar lightwave circuit (PLC) type thermo-optic switches (TOSW). In this paper, we propose a novel array antenna-assisted adaptive modulation scheme for fast fading environments. Although adaptive modulation is an efficient technique capable of establishing high bit-rate digital transmission in a multi-path fading environment, it is sensitive to the fast time variation of the channel because of difficulties in tracking the channel state. To resolve this problem, an array antenna-based Doppler spread compensator was applied to the adaptive modulation scheme. Computer simulation results indicated that the proposed scheme can markedly improve the bit error rate and throughput performance for the region in which the maximum Doppler frequency normalized by the packet length is up to 0.1.

A procedure for estimating radiated power of radio transmitter is proposed based on a statistical property of field intensity time variation distribution in a reverberation chamber. When random varying multipath waves produced by stirrers in a reverberation chamber are received together with a direct wave, the resulting mixed waves are regarded as a kind of multipath waves. Theoretical and experimental results are reported regarding a procedure for estimating radiated power from the 63.2% value of CDF (Cumulative Distribution Function) of an envelope of multipath waves.

The site attenuation is an important parameter to evaluate an anechoic chamber. The ray-tracing method has been applied to analyze it. However, the lowest applicable frequency has not been cleared. In this paper, the FDTD method has been applied to analyze the site attenuation of a compact anechoic chamber from 30 MHz to 250 MHz, and this has been compared with the calculated one by the ray-tracing method to evaluate the lowest frequency where the ray-tracing method could be applied. The compact anechoic chamber, where the absorbers are placed on the all walls, has been used for the calculation. For FDTD analysis, the dipole antenna and the absorber have been modeled by using the large cell, whose size is larger than the diameter of the antenna element. For verification, the site attenuation of a compact anechoic chamber has been measured and compared with the calculated values by the FDTD method and the ray-tracing method. As the results, the calculated values by the ray-tracing method have larger deviation than the ones by the FDTD method when the frequency is less than 180 MHz.

A speech signal captured by a distant microphone is generally smeared by reverberation, which severely degrades both the speech intelligibility and Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) performance. Previously, we proposed a single-microphone dereverberation method, named "Harmonicity based dEReverBeration (HERB)." HERB estimates the inverse filter for an unknown room transfer function by utilizing an essential feature of speech, namely harmonic structure. In previous studies, improvements in speech intelligibility was shown solely with spectrograms, and improvements in ASR performance were simply confirmed by matched condition acoustic model. In this paper, we undertook a further investigation of HERB's potential as regards to the above two factors. First, we examined speech intelligibility by means of objective indices. As a result, we found that HERB is capable of improving the speech intelligibility to approximately that of clean speech. Second, since HERB alone could not improve the ASR performance sufficiently, we further analyzed the HERB mechanism with a view to achieving further improvements. Taking the analysis results into account, we proposed an appropriate ASR configuration and conducted experiments. Experimental results confirmed that, if HERB is used with an ASR adaptation scheme such as MLLR and a multicondition acoustic model, it is very effective for improving ASR performance even in unknown severely reverberant environments.

This letter discusses the prediction of the time-varying bit error rate (BER) for a transmitting channel using recent transmissions and retransmissions. Depending on the predicted BER, we propose a maximum frame size control to improve the goodput in wireless networks. It is shown, using simulation, that when the maximum frame size is controlled relative to the time-varying BER the goodput of the network is improved.
