    The analytic expression for the transmission spectrum of cascaded long-period fiber gratings is presented in a closed form. When several identical gratings are cascaded in-series with a regular distance, the transmission spectrum is revealed to have a series of regularly spaced peaks, suitable for multi-channel filters. The analytic solution is obtained by diagonalizing the transfer matrix of each grating unit that is composed of a single grating and a grating-free region between adjacent gratings. The spectrum of the device is simply described with the number of cascaded gratings and a single parameter that has the information of the phase difference between the modes. With the derived equation, the spectral behaviors of the proposed device are investigated. The intensity of each peak can be controlled by adjusting the strength of a single grating. The separation between adjacent gratings determines the spacing between the peaks. The finesse of the peaks can be increased by cascading more gratings. The derived analytic results are compared with the known results of paired gratings and phase-shifted gratings.

    This paper proposes a nonlinear distortion suppression scheme for optical direct FM Radio-on-Fiber system. This scheme uses the interaction between the nonlinearities of DFM-LD and OFD to suppress a 3rd order intermodulation distortion. We theoretically analyze the carrier to noise-plus-distortion ratio (CNDR) and show a controlling method in the MZI type OFD to realize the proposed suppression scheme.

  • Asymmetric Transmission Spectrum of a Long-Period Fiber Grating and Its Removal Using a Beam Scanning Method

    In an ideal fiber grating having a uniform refractive index modulation, the reflection or the transmission spectrum is symmetric with equal amount of side lobes on both sides of the resonant wavelength of the fiber grating. It is observed that a long-period fiber grating made by a non-uniform UV laser beam through a uniform amplitude mask has an asymmetric transmission spectrum. The asymmetric characteristic is explained with Mach-Zehnder effect in the long-period fiber grating. The non-uniform UV laser beam makes also a non-uniform index modulation along the fiber core. Therefore, a beam coupled to a cladding mode at a section of the grating can be re-coupled to the core mode after passing a certain distance. The re-coupled beam makes Mach-Zehnder-like interference with the un-coupled core mode. However, it is presented that the asymmetric phenomenon can be overcome by scanning the UV laser beam along the fiber over the mask. The beam scanning method is able to suffer the same fluence of the UV laser beam on the fiber. Finally, a linearly chirped long-period fiber grating was made using the non-uniform UV laser beam. Due to the asymmetricity the chirping effect was not clearly observed. It is also presented that the beam scanning method could remove the asymmetric problem and recover the typical spectrum of the linearly chirped fiber grating.

    Chen et al., have proposed a new estimation method for the membership values in fuzzy sets. The proposed scheme takes input from empirical/experimental data, which reflect the expert's knowledge on the relative degree of belonging of the members, and then searches for the best fit membership values of the element. Through the estimation of the practical case (Sect. 3 in [1]) the algorithm suggests to normalize the estimated membership values if there is any among them more than one and change some condition to guarantee its positiveness. In this paper, we show how to use the same imposed condition to guarantee that the estimated membership values will be within the unit interval without normalization.

    This paper describes the evaluation of a fiber-optic reflective displacement sensor that is compensated for variations in light source intensity, pressure, temperature and opacity of ambient medium. Additionally, the distance information is averaged over several points on the target surface, which reduces signal fluctuations due to inhomogeneities. Furthermore, a practical optical fiber reflective sensor model of measuring oil film thickness for thrust bearing is set up in this paper. Actual measurements were made with HEC 3000 tons' thrust bearing and the results were in good agreement with theoretical calculations.

    The performance of a twisted-pair channel under ADSL environment is assumed to be dominated by far end crosstalk (FEXT) and additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN). In this paper, we study the channel capacity of the copper twisted pair and the optimum input power spectral density distribution at this channel capacity in the presence of ADSL environment. The channel capacity under different loop length and different input power will also be given. The simulation results show that the distribution of the optimum input power spectral density in the presence of AWGN and FEXT is not uniform. This is different from the situation where AWGN is the only interference, where the input power distribution is approximately uniform.

  • On the Amount of Embedded Information of Watermarking Methods Based on the Parallel Combinatorial Spread Spectrum Scheme

    The maximum amounts of embedded information that is important in practical system design of two watermarking methods based on the parallel combinatorial spread spectrum (PC/SS) scheme are discussed in this paper. One is a private watermarking method proposed in this paper and has a practical strong point to make the quality of the watermarked image to be constant in any images. The other is a public watermarking method that was previously proposed by the authors. Through this study, the minimum number of orthogonal sequences for embedding the required amount of information under the condition that quantization noise is only assumed is found in each watermarking method.

    In this paper, we describe statistical properties of timing jitter of symbol timing recovery circuit for carrierless amplitude/phase modulation (CAP)-based very high-rate digital subscriber line (VDSL) system. Analytical expressions of the timing jitter for envelope-based timing recovery system, such as squarer-based timing recovery (S-TR) and absolute-value-based timing recovery (A-TR) schemes, are derived in the presence of additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) or far-end crosstalk (FEXT). In particular, the analytical and simulation results of the timing jitter performance are presented and compared for a 51.84 Mb/s 16-CAP VDSL system. The A-TR system implemented digitally meets the DAVIC's VDSL system requirement, which specifies the maximum peak-to-peak jitter value of 1.5 nsec and the acquisition time of 20 msec.

  • Burst Error Recovery for VF Arithmetic Coding

    One of the disadvantages of compressed data is their vulnerability, that is, even a single corrupted bit in compressed data may destroy the decompressed data completely. Therefore, Variable-to-Fixed length Arithmetic Coding, or VFAC, with error detecting capability is discussed. However, implementable error recovery method for compressed data has never been proposed. This paper proposes Burst Error Recovery Variable-to-Fixed length Arithmetic Coding, or BERVFAC, as well as Error Detecting Variable-to-Fixed length Arithmetic Coding, or EDVFAC. Both VFAC schemes achieve VF coding by inserting the internal states of the decompressor into compressed data. The internal states consist of width and offset of the sub-interval corresponding to the decompressed symbol and are also used for error detection. Convolutional operations are applied to encoding and decoding in order to propagate errors and improve error control capability. The proposed EDVFAC and BERVFAC are evaluated by theoretical analysis and computer simulations. The simulation results show that more than 99.99% of errors can be detected by EDVFAC. For BERVFAC, over 99.95% of l-burst errors can be corrected for l 32 and greater than 99.99% of other errors can be detected. The simulation results also show that the time-overhead necessary to decode the BERVFAC is about 12% when 10% of the received words are erroneous.

    By combining the technology of all-optical saturable absorbers and the diffractive optics, a scheme of all-optical time division demultiplexing module is investigated. Following authors' proposal, design, test fabrication of the optical platform in the previous paper, this paper focuses on the characterization of switching performance. Using a multiple quantum well saturable absorber of InGaAs/InAlAs composition, and gain switched semiconductor laser pulses of 25 ps pulse width, the switching function was demonstrated experimentally at wavelength of 1.55 µm. The switching on-off ratio was compared among 4 lens configuration, 2 lens configuration (2L) and free space, collinear geometry. No degradation was observed in the case of 2 lens configuration in comparison to collinear illumination. Thus the feasibility of all-optical switch module with power efficiency and high speed is predicted, under the assumption of the progress in sub-micron lithography.

    Error-free transmission of image fiber-optic two-dimensional (2-D) parallel interconnection using vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL)/photodiode (PD) arrays is demonstrated. Simple constructions of transmitter/receiver modules are proposed. Optical alignment is achieved without power-monitoring. Crosstalk from an adjacent channel was -34 dB. Misalignment tolerance for a BER of less than 10-9 was 85 µm. The results clearly indicate that the interconnection system built around an image fiber and 2-D VCSEL/PD arrays has promise for use in the highly parallel high-density optical interconnects of the future.

    VCSEL output light polarization was controlled by fabricating devices on (311) substrate. Stability was improved by introducing compressive strain to the quantum wells in the active layer. In experiments, the power penalty due to polarization-dependent loss in the transmission line was negligible for both VCSELs with unstrained and strained quantum well active layers on (311)B substrate. The sensitivity at 2.5 Gbps was improved in a device with a strained active layer because the intensity noise due to the polarization instability was reduced. These characteristics are discussed and compared to calculated results.

    We evaluate the BER performance of the OFDM system with the one-tap equalizer bank under the two-ray multipath channel with the frequency offset by the simple Gaussian analysis method and by a proposed modified Gaussian analysis method. The proposed analysis method considers two adjacent inter-channel interferences, separately, and models the other inter-channel interferences as a Gaussian noise. It is shown that the proposed analysis method affords much closer results to the simulations than those by the simple Gaussian analysis method, when the frequency offset exists.

    This paper provides a normalized Iterative Feedback Tuning (IFT) method that assures the boundedness of the gradient vector estimate (ρ) and the Hessian matrix estimate without the assumption that the internal signals are bounded. The proposed method uses the unbiased Gauss-Newton direction by the addition of the 4-th experiment. We also present blended control criteria and a PID-like controller as new design choices. In examples, the normalized IFT method results in a good convergence although the internal signal or the measurement noise variance is large.

    The structural characteristics of clusters are investigated in the partitioning process. Two partition functions, which show opposite properties around the optimal cluster number, are found and a new cluster validity index is presented based on the combination of these functions. Some properties of the index function are discussed and numerical examples are presented.

    We have developed a measuring system for high-Tc superconducting single-flux quantum circuits and evaluated its performance in terms of bit error rate (BER) measurement for given signal voltage levels. The system includes magnetic shields and a high-frequency test fixture mounted on a closed-cycle cooler. The test fixture is made of non-magnetic material. The transmission characteristics of the measuring system were evaluated by using a vector network analyzer at frequencies ranging from 40 MHz to 20 GHz. The operating temperature of the measuring system ranges from 20 K to room temperature. We connected a 12-GHz wideband pulse amplifier to the system and evaluated its high-speed transmission characteristics. We used a standard 50-Ω microstrip line as an impedance-matched sample. The signal used in the experiment was a 215-1 pseudo random bit signal (PRBS) at 3 Gbps. As a result, the output voltage required for an output driver under the experimental condition was 18.8 mV in order to obtain a resolution of BER measurement of 10-12.

    A broadcast distribution system (BDS) is a system for the distribution of digital contents over broadcast channel where the data supplier broadcasts the contents in encrypted form and gives each subscriber a decoder containing a secret decryption key. A traitor is a subscriber who offers the information which allows to decrypt the broadcast. When a pirate decoder is captured, if at least one traitor can be identified from it, a BDS is said to be traitor-tracing. If the data supplier can prevent subscribers from obtaining the contents without recalling their decoders, a BDS is said to be subscriber-excluding. In this paper, we propose an efficient BDS which is both subscriber-excluding and traitor-tracing. We use similar mathematics to a threshold cryptosystem. In the proposed BDS, the maximum number of excluded subscribers reaches the maximum number of traitors in a coalition for which at least one traitor can be identified. We prove that the proposed BDS is secure against ciphertext-only attack if and only if ElGamal cryptosystem is secure against the attack and the discrete logarithm problem is hard. The proposed BDS is the first one which satisfies all the following features: Both subscriber-excluding and traitor-tracing, identifying all the traitors, black box tracing and public key system.

    Orthogonal Multi-Carrier-Code Division Multiple Access (OMC-CDMA) is a scheme that combines multi-carrier modulation with Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum (DS-SS) and allows the efficient utilization of the bandwidth, the resistance against frequency selective fading in broadband mobile radio channels and the efficient implementation by the FFT algorithm. In this paper, we analyze the bit error probability (BER) of OMC-CDMA on two-ray Rayleigh multipath fading channels with the delay time and compare the BER performances of OMC-CDMA according to the number of users (M) and subcarriers (N), and the power of delayed path. We found that the performance of OMC-CDMA depends greatly on the power of delayed signal. If the power of delayed signal is increased from 10% to 50% as compared with the direct path power, the capacity of OMC-CDMA is decreased approximately by 40% at BER=10-3, N=256 and SNR=12 dB. And, though more subcarriers are used in the circumstance that the power of delayed signal is relatively great, the performance is not significantly improved.
