  • Visible Light Emission from Nanocrystalline Silicon Embedded in CaF2 Layers on Si(111)

    We report on the formation technique and the first observation of visible light emission from silicon nanoparticles (<10nm) embedded in CaF22 Iayers grown on Si(111) substrates by using codeposition of Si and CaF2. It is shown that the size and density of silicon particles embedded in the CaF2 layer can be controlled by varying the substrate temperature and the evaporation rates of CaF2 and Si. The photoluminescence (PL) spectra of Si nanoparticles embedded in CaF2 thin films were investigated. The blue or green light emissions obtained using a He-Cd laser (λ=325nm) could be seen with the naked eye even at room temperature for the first time. It is shown that the PL intensity strongly depends on growth conditions such as the Si:CaF2 flux ratio and the growth temperature. The PL spectra were also changed by in situ annealing process. These phenomena can be explained qualitatively by the quantum size effect of Si nanoparticles embedded in CaF2 barriers.

    There are many instances in which character shape of a class changes smoothly to that of another class. Although there are many ways of the change, the most delicate change is curvature feature. The paper treat this problem systematically in both theoretically and experimentally. Specifically some confusing pairs were constructed which are well known in the field of OCR, such as 2 Z and 4 9. A series of samples generated using each model which change subtly were provided to conduct a psychological experiment. The results exhibit a monotone change of recognition rates from nearly 100% to 0% as the shape changes continuously. To imitate the humans' performance, feature of curvature was extracted based on continuous function representation based on Bezier's spline curve. Specifically two methods were tried from theoretical and engineering points of view and very successful results were obtained.

  • On-Line Japanese Character Recognition Based on Flexible Pattern Matching Method Using Normalization-Cooperative Feature Extraction

    This paper shows that when a pattern matching method used in optical character readers is highly accurate, it can be used effectively in on-line Japanese character recognition. Stroke matching methods used in previous conventional on-line character recognition have restricted the number and the order of strokes. On the other hand, orientation-feature pattern matching methods avoid these restrictions. The authors have improved a pattern matching method with the development in the flexible pattern matching (FPM) method, based on nonlinear shape normalization and nonlinear pattern matching, which includes the normalization-cooperative feature extraction (NCFE) method. These improvements have increased the recognition rate from 81.9% to 95.9%, when applied to the off-line database ETL-9 from the Electrotechnical Laboratory, Japan. When applied on-line to the examination of 151,533 Kanji and Hiragana characters in 3,036 categories, the recognition rate achieved 94.0%, while the cumulative recognition rate within the best ten candidates was 99.1%.

  • Microcrystalline Silicon in Oxide Matrix Prepared from Partial Oxidation of Anodized Porous Silicon

    Microcrystalline silicon embedded in silicon oxide has been prepared by means of a wet oxidation of porous silicon (PS) anodically produced from degenerate Si wafers in a HF solution. As the oxidation proceeded, optical absorptions of the PS specimen in the visible light region shifted obviously to the higher energy side. Visible light emission from the oxidized specimen was observed at room temperature with photoexcitation by a He-Cd laser while the as-prepared specimen emitted no visible lights. These results are discussed in relation to the quantum size effect of the microcrystalline silicon confined in the oxide matrix as well as visible emissions from as-prepared specimens produced from non-degenerate Si wafers.
