    STM/STS measurements have been carried out for TTF-TCNQ complex films evaporated on hydrogen-terminated silicon substrates, and the variation of tunneling spectra has been investigated on morphologically different crystal grains. Very thin semiconductive adsorbed layers were found to cover the as-deposited film surfaces. By removing the adsorbed layers, the intrinsic electronic structures of two different phases were revealed. A 'needle phase' which appears at the early stage of film growth has a semiconductive character and a 'granular phase' which grows later has a metallic character similar to bulk crystals. The electronic structure of the needle phase is considered to be affected by the substrate although the crystallographic structure is similar to the bulk crystal of TTF-TCNQ.

    A study of apple flavor, banana flavor, and their chemical components was performed using an array of quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) gas sensors coated with sensing films such as lipids or stationary phase materials for gas chromatography (GC). The steady state sensor responses measured by a static measurement system were used to evaluate the characteristics of the different samples by principal component analysis (PCA) method. Since the array has shown good discrimination properties for fruit flavor components providing useful information, it was used to investigate the components that primarily contribute to the odor of the flavors. The results obtained from principal components analysis aided by sensory test were also used for an attempt to synthesize apple and banana flavors using only three of its odor components.

    Digitalization in electronic systems requires the electronics devices in de-coupler sets with low impedance at high frequency, and high reliability. A shield strip type line component with aluminum substrate, its surface oxidized dielectric layer and a conducting polymer electrolyte has been developed. The conducting polymers of polypyrrole and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) have been formed by direct chemical oxidative polymerization and electrochemical polymerization on a dielectric layer. Thus, the surface of the dielectric layer is covered with conducting polymer films. The structure of the line component is strip line conformation just like a crushed coaxial cable with in-put and out-put terminals surrounded by the conducting polymer electrolyte. Two types of the components, i.e., a large surface area, 10 20 mm, and a small surface area, 4 4 mm, have been fabricated with polypyrrole and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene), respectively. The dielectric properties of these line components have been investigated with a Impedance/Gain-phase analyzer and a network analyzer. Due to the high conductivity of the polymer electrolytes, the line components demonstrate low impedance at resonance frequency. Regarding the frequency characteristics of the line components, the impedance and ESR at high frequency are lower than those of the conventional capacitors. Furthermore, the transfer coefficients, S21, are three orders lower than those of other capacitors in a wide frequency band from 10 kHz to 6 GHz. The results indicate the excellent characteristics of the line components for the power line de-coupler set at the boundary of the closed circuit unit.

  • Loop and Address Code Optimization for Digital Signal Processors

    This paper presents a new DSP-oriented code optimization method to enhance performance by exploiting the specific architectural features of digital signal processors. In the proposed method, a source code is translated into the static single assignment form while preserving the high-level information related to loops and the address computation of array accesses. The information is used in generating hardware loop instructions and parallel instructions provided by most digital signal processors. In addition to the conventional control-data flow graph, a new graph is employed to make it easy to find auto-modification addressing modes efficiently. Experimental results on benchmark programs show that the proposed method is effective in improving performance.

  • Current Feedforward Phase Compensation Technique for an Integrator and Its Application to an Auto-Compensation System

    The transfer characteristic of an integrator is affected by excess-phase shift caused by the parasitic capacitance. The phase compensation is obtained by introducing zeros to generate phase lead. This paper proposes a phase compensation technique for the differential signal input integrator. The proposed technique is employing feedforward signal current source. The fifth-order leapfrog Chebyshev low-pass filter with 0.5 dB passband ripple is designed using the integrator with the proposed phase compensation. Further, an autotuning phase compensation system using the proposed technique is realized by applying a PLL system. The effectiveness of the proposed technique is confirmed by PSPICE simulation. The simulation results of the integrator with the proposed phase compensation shows that excess-phase cancellation is obtained at various unity gain frequencies. The accurate filter characteristic of the fifth-order leapfrog filter is obtained by using the autotuning phase compensation system. The passband of the filter is improved over wide range of frequencies. The proposed technique is suitable for low voltage application.

    Blind adaptive channel identification of communication channels is a problem of important current theoretical and practical concerns. Recently proposed solutions for this problem exploit the diversity induced by antenna array or time oversampling, leading to the so-called, second order statistics techniques. Adaptive blind channel identification techniques based on a off-line least-squares approach have been proposed but this method assumes noise-free case. The method resorts to an adaptive filter with a linear constraint. This paper proposes a new approach based on eigenvalue decomposition. Indeed, the eigenvector corresponding to the minimum eigenvalue of the covariance matrix of the received signals contains the channel impulse response. And we present a adaptive algorithm to solve this problem. The performance of the proposed technique is evaluated over real measured channel and is compared to existing algorithms.

  • The SCED Service Discipline with O(1) Complexity for Deadline Calculation

    In order for a service discipline to be used for guaranteed service networks at very high speed, its overall implementation must be scalable while it provides as wide a network schedulability region as possible. From this point of view, GPS-based service disciplines provide a narrow network schedulability region while EDF-based disciplines suffer from the implementation complexities of rate-controllers and admission control. Alternatively, although service disciplines based on service-curves can provide a wider network schedulability region than GPS-based and EDF-based disciplines, they may have even worse implementation complexities than EDF-based disciplines. In this paper, we propose to employ a service discipline based on our specific service-curves. We show that our service discipline has comparable implementation complexity to GPS-based disciplines while providing the same wide network schedulability region that EDF-based disciplines can provide. In fact, this service discipline is an SCED service discipline proposed in [14]. However, our specific service-curves provide the SCED service discipline with the same network schedulability region that EDF-based disciplines can provide, O(1) complexity for deadline calculation, and O(N) complexity for admission control where N is the number of sessions.

    A uniform raised-salicide technology has been investigated using both uniform selective-epitaxial-growth (SEG) silicon and salicide films, to reduce a junction leakage current of shallow source/drain (S/D) regions for high-performance CMOS devices. The uniform SEG-Si film without pits is formed by using a wet process, which is a carbon-free oxide removal only using a dilute hydrofluoric acid (DHF) dipping, prior to the Si-SEG process. After a titanium-salicide formation using a conventional two-step salicide process, this uniform SEG-Si film achieves good S/D junction characteristics. The uniform titanium-salicide film without bowing into a silicon is formed by a smaller Ti/SEG-Si thickness ratio, which results in a low sheet resistance of 5 Ω/sq. without a narrow-line effect. Furthermore, the drive current is maximized by this raised-salicide film using a Ti/SEG-Si thickness ratio of 1.0.

  • NP-Hardness of Liveness Problem of Bounded Asymmetric Choice Net

    This letter treats computational complexity of bounded asymmetric choice (AC) net. AC net is a subclass of Petri net that properly includes the class of well-known extended free choice net. It is shown that satisfiability problem of Boolean expressions is polynomial time reducible to liveness problem of bounded AC nets. This implies that the problem is NP-hard.

    In this paper we deal with Voronoi diagram in simply connected complete manifold with non positive curvature, called Hadamard manifold. We prove that a part of the Voronoi diagram can be characterized by hyperbolic Voronoi diagram. Voronoi diagram in simply connected complete manifold is also characterized for a given set of points satisfying a distance condition.

  • Diagnosability of Butterfly Networks under the Comparison Approach

    We consider diagnosability of butterfly networks under the comparison approach proposed by Maeng and Malek. Sengupta and Dahbura discussed characterization of diagnosable systems under the comparison approach, and designed a polynomial time algorithm to identify the faulty processors. However, for a general system, it is not algorithmically easy to determine its diagnosability. This paper proposes two comparison schemes for generating syndromes on butterfly networks, and determine the diagnosability of the network.

  • On H-Coloring Problems with H Expressed by Complements of Cycles, Bipartite Graphs, and Chordal Graphs

    Coloring problem is a well-known combinatorial optimization problem of graphs. This paper considers H-coloring problems, which are coloring problems with restrictions such that some pairs of colors can not be used for adjacent vertices. The restriction of adjacent colors can be represented by a graph H, i.e., each vertex represents a color and each edge means that the two colors corresponding to the two end-vertices can be used for adjacent vertices. Especially, H-coloring problem with a complete graph H of order k is equivalent to the traditional k-coloring problem. This paper presents sufficient conditions such that H-coloring problem can be reduced to an H-coloring problem, where H is a subgraph of H. And it shows a hierarchy about classes of H-colorable graphs for any complement graph H of a cycle of order odd n 5.

  • An Approach to Adaptive Network

    This paper describes the concept of an adaptive network, that is, a network environment that can rapidly and autonomously adapt its behavior according to network conditions and traffic status. The user interface of the adaptive network can access any resource in the network as a memory-mapped I/O device, as if it were attached to the local bus of the user's PC. This network concept has several benefits. From the application development viewpoint, no network related programming is required, and applications do not have to be modified even if the network topologies and protocols are changed. Network maintenance and upgrading can be done anytime without having to worry about the application users, because the network itself is concealed from the applications. In addition, the reconfigurable hardware technology functions as an autonomous network control through the use of a lower-layer protocol. We developed a testbed that makes heterogeneous resources available to users and used it to demonstrate the feasibility of our concept by implementing and running some applications over it.

    In this paper, we describe design considerations for inverse dispersion fiber (IDF) whose chromatic dispersion is designed to compensate for that of conventional 1.3 µm zero-dispersion single-mode fiber (SMF). We clarify the appropriate structural parameters for W-type, triple-clad-type and ring-type refractive index profiles to realize a hybrid transmission line composed of SMF and IDF taking into consideration the bending sensitivity and the available wavelength bandwidth that achieves an average chromatic dispersion of below 1 ps/nm/km in the 1.55 µm region. We also show that, when the launched power is less than 0 dBm/ch, a hybrid transmission line composed of SMF and IDF provides better 40 Gbps 8 ch dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) transmission performance than a conventional dispersion compensation scheme with a dispersion compensating fiber (DCF) module.

    This paper presents a historical review of fiber technologies from the 1970s till now, focused on design, transmission characteristics, and reliability assurance of silica optical fibers. Discussion is made by dividing the period into two phases; the first phase closing nearly at the end of the 1980s and the second one starting at the same time. As for the first phase, we present designs of graded-index multimode fiber and single-mode fiber, and development of dispersion shifted fiber. Mechanical reliability assurance and loss increase phenomena due to hydrogen are also described. Development of an optical fiber amplifier triggered the start of the second phase. Due to the introduction of WDM transmission systems as well as demand on high bit-rate transmission, fiber dispersion and nonlinearity have become indispensable factors to be taken into consideration for system design and performance evaluation. We discuss novel non-zero dispersion shifted fibers and dispersion compensating fibers, developed to meet the requirements for long distance and high bit-rate WDM transmission systems. Finally, discussions are made on the future research and development items, which are necessary to realize anticipating photonic networks.

  • A Graph-Based Class Structural Complexity Metric and Its Evaluation

    Properly representation of the complexity of class structure will be useful in object oriented software developments. Although some class complexity metrics have been proposed, they have ignored directions of coupling relationships among methods and attributes, such as whether a method writes data onto an attribute or reads data from the attribute. In this paper, we use a directed graph model to represent such coupling relationships. Based on the directed graph model, we propose a metric of class structural complexity. The proposed metric satisfies necessary conditions of complexity metric suggested by Briand and others. The following fact is showed by experimental data of Java classes. While the proposed metric follows a conventional metric, the proposed metric can capture an aspect of class structural complexity which is lost by the conventional one.

    Agent-based computing has been advocated by many researchers and software developers as a promising and innovative way to model, design and implement complex Web-related applications. KODAMA (Kyushu university Open & Distributed Autonomous MultiAgent) project, which is described in this paper, is our endeavour to advance both the technology and engineering of well-known multiagent systems. In particular, we have noted that software agents might be the potential solution to many problems faced by today's Web. However, building a high-quality, large-scale multiagent system, which can operate in open environments, is a great challenge. So far, we have devoted a lot of effort to design and implement a generic agent architecture, a hierarchical agent community structure, and an independent network communication middleware. To ensure that KODAMA can be used to create Web-agent applications, its network communication performance and a prototype distributed database retrieval system have been tested. The result shows that KODAMA is suitable for developing network-aware applications.

  • Adaptive Bitwidth Compression for Low Power Video Memory Design

    Due to large capacitance, high access ratio and wide access bitwidth, frame memory is one of the most energy consuming devices in modern video encoders. This paper proposes a new architectural technique to reduce energy dissipation of frame memory through adaptive bitwith compression. Unlike related approaches, the technique utilizes the fixed order of memory accesses and data correlation of video sequences, by dynamically adjusting the memory bitwidth to the number of bits changed per pixel. Instead of treating the data bits independently, we group the most significant bits together, activating the corresponding group of bit-lines adaptively to data variation. The approach is not restricted to the specific bit-patterns nor depends on the storage phase. It works equally well on read and write accesses, as well as during precharging. Simulations show that using this method we can reduce the total energy consumption of the frame memory cell array by 20% without affecting the picture quality. The implementation scheme is simple yet compact.

  • High Performance Dispersion-Flattened Hybrid Optical Transmission Lines for Ultra-Large Capacity Transoceanic Systems

    This paper describes design optimization and performances of hybrid optical transmission lines consisting of effective-area-enlarged pure silica core fiber and dispersion compensating fiber. As a result of the design optimization, considering low nonlinearity and good bending characteristic, the developed fibers exhibit a span average loss of 0.208 dB/km, a span average dispersion slope of 0.02 ps/nm2/km and low nonlinearity with an equivalent effective area of 60 µm2. Further optimization of the relationship among the nonlinearity, the dispersion slope and the bending characteristic enables perfectly dispersion-flattened hybrid optical transmission lines exhibiting a low transmission loss of 0.211 dB/km, low nonlinearity with an equivalent effective area of 60 µm2 and small dispersion deviation of 0.03 ps/nm/km in a wavelength band wider than 40 nm.

    In this paper, we study system-level diagnosis under the comparison approach proposed by Maeng and Malek. Sengupta and Dahbura designed an O(n5) time diagnosis algorithm for identifying all faulty nodes in general graphs (n is the number of nodes in a system). We consider diagnosis on a butterfly network BF(k,r) and propose O(k2 n) time diagnosis algorithms for locating all faulty nodes in BF(k,r).
