  • On the Average Coding Rate of the Tunstall Code for Stationary and Memoryless Sources

    The coding rate of a one-shot Tunstall code for stationary and memoryless sources is investigated in non-universal situations so that the probability distribution of the source is known to the encoder and the decoder. When studying the variable-to-fixed length code, the average coding rate has been defined as (i) the codeword length divided by the average block length. We define the average coding rate as (ii) the expectation of the pointwise coding rate, and prove that (ii) converges to the same value as (i).

  • Leaky Wave Antenna Using Composite Right/Left-Handed Transmission Line Composed of Ladder Network for UHF Band

    Broadband antennas have various applications in digital terrestrial television (DTV) services. Compact broadband antennas are required for arranging in long and narrow space along the rim of a laptop display. A leaky-wave antenna using the composite right/left-handed transmission line (CRLH-TL) is one of the candidates for achieving the broadband antenna. However, there are not enough to design guideline of small leaky wave antennas using the CRLH-TL for UHF band. In this paper, a CRLH-TL comprising a ladder network is proposed for broadband and simple structure. The paper also discusses the design of a leaky-wave antenna with the CRLH-TL operating in the DTV band. The relation between the operating bandwidth and attenuation constant of the CRLH-TL is discussed. An antenna that can be accommodated in the limited and narrow space available in mobile terminals has to be designed. Hence, the effects of the number of cells and a finite ground plane are discussed with the purpose of achieving the miniaturization of the antenna. In this study, the transmission and radiation characteristics of the fabricated antennas are measured. The gain of the fabricated antenna is confirmed to remain almost constant even when the operating frequency is varied. The maximum gain and operating band achieved in this study are approximately -0.6 dBi and about 54%, respectively.

  • Superfast-Trainable Multi-Class Probabilistic Classifier by Least-Squares Posterior Fitting

    Kernel logistic regression (KLR) is a powerful and flexible classification algorithm, which possesses an ability to provide the confidence of class prediction. However, its training--typically carried out by (quasi-)Newton methods--is rather time-consuming. In this paper, we propose an alternative probabilistic classification algorithm called Least-Squares Probabilistic Classifier (LSPC). KLR models the class-posterior probability by the log-linear combination of kernel functions and its parameters are learned by (regularized) maximum likelihood. In contrast, LSPC employs the linear combination of kernel functions and its parameters are learned by regularized least-squares fitting of the true class-posterior probability. Thanks to this linear regularized least-squares formulation, the solution of LSPC can be computed analytically just by solving a regularized system of linear equations in a class-wise manner. Thus LSPC is computationally very efficient and numerically stable. Through experiments, we show that the computation time of LSPC is faster than that of KLR by two orders of magnitude, with comparable classification accuracy.

  • Power Controlled Concurrent Transmissions in mmWave WPANs

    This letter considers power-controlled transmission from directional antennas in mmWave wireless personal area network (WPAN) systems. The attributes of these systems are studied; these include the number of concurrent transmissions and the power consumption with different system parameters, such as the antenna's beamwidth and radiating efficiency. Numerical results are presented to show that the power controlled transmission enables more concurrent transmissions than the non-power controlled transmission. The results also show that the number of concurrent transmissions increases as the beamwidth and the path loss component become smaller and the antenna's radiating efficiency increases. In addition, the power controlled system generally uses less power than the non-power controlled transmission set up; the overall analysis is verified by simulation.

  • A Semi-Supervised Approach to Perceived Age Prediction from Face Images

    We address the problem of perceived age estimation from face images, and propose a new semi-supervised approach involving two novel aspects. The first novelty is an efficient active learning strategy for reducing the cost of labeling face samples. Given a large number of unlabeled face samples, we reveal the cluster structure of the data and propose to label cluster-representative samples for covering as many clusters as possible. This simple sampling strategy allows us to boost the performance of a manifold-based semi-supervised learning method only with a relatively small number of labeled samples. The second contribution is to take the heterogeneous characteristics of human age perception into account. It is rare to misjudge the age of a 5-year-old child as 15 years old, but the age of a 35-year-old person is often misjudged as 45 years old. Thus, magnitude of the error is different depending on subjects' age. We carried out a large-scale questionnaire survey for quantifying human age perception characteristics, and propose to utilize the quantified characteristics in the framework of weighted regression. Consequently, our proposed method is expressed in the form of weighted least-squares with a manifold regularizer, which is scalable to massive datasets. Through real-world age estimation experiments, we demonstrate the usefulness of the proposed method.

  • Planar Waveguide Arrays for Millimeter Wave Systems Open Access

    Design of high gain and high efficiency antennas is one of the key challenges in antenna engineering and especially in millimeter wave communication systems. Various types of planar waveguide arrays with series-fed traveling wave operation have been developed in Tokyo Tech with the special focus upon efficiency enhancement as well as reduction of fabrication cost. In this review, four kinds of single layer waveguide arrays characterized with the series fed travelling wave operation are surveyed first. To cope with the bandwidth narrowing effects due to long line effects associated with the series fed operation, authors have introduced partially corporate feed embedded in the single layer waveguide. They further extended the study to cover fully corporate feed arrays with multiple layer waveguide as well; a new fabrication technique of diffusion bonding of laminated thin plates has the potential to realize the low cost mass production of multi-layer structures for the millimeter wave application. Secondly, the novel methods for loss evaluation of copper plate substrate are established for the design of post-wall waveguide arrays where dielectric loss and conductor loss is determined in wide range of millimeter wave band, by using the Whispering gallery mode resonator. This enables us to design the planar arrays with the loss taken into account. Finally, the planar arrays are now applied to two kinds of systems in the Tokyo Tech millimeter wave project; the indoor short range file-transfer systems and the outdoor communication systems for the medium range backhaul links. The latter has been field-tested in the model network built in Tokyo Tech Ookayama campus. Early stage progress of the project including unique propagation data is also reported.

    A waveform of an ultra wideband impulse radio (UWB-IR) system can be extremely distorted through a channel even for free-space transmission because of antenna dispersion. This highly degrades the link budget performance. Therefore, the understand of antenna characteristics, which effects on waveform distortion, is necessary. This paper studies the waveform distortion due to antenna in free space transmission in UWB-IR system. The link budget is usually evaluated by using the Friis' transmission formula. However, it is not directly applicable to the UWB-IR transmission system. The link budget evaluation formula attended from conventional Friis' transmission formula that takes into account the transmitted waveform, its distortion due to the antennas, the channel and the correlation receiver is proposed. Since the antenna is significant pulse-shaping filters in UWB-IR system, the example kind of the log-periodic dipole antenna (LPDA) is experimentally examined, especially focused on the effect of the template waveforms.

    The security of permutation-based hash functions in the ideal permutation model has been studied when the input-length of compression function is larger than the input-length of the permutation function. In this paper, we consider permutation based compression functions that have input lengths shorter than that of the permutation. Under this assumption, we propose a permutation based compression function and prove its security with respect to collision and (second) preimage attacks in the ideal permutation model. The proposed compression function can be seen as a generalization of the compression function of MD6 hash function.

  • Design of a Partially-Corporate Feed Double-Layer Slotted Waveguide Array Antenna in 39 GHz Band and Fabrication by Diffusion Bonding of Laminated Thin Metal Plates

    Introducing diffusion bonding of laminated thin metal plates to the fabrication of slotted waveguide arrays enlightens the high potential and the feasibility of multi-layer antennas with high-performance. It is a promising process with low cost even for a double-layer antenna, because the number of etching patterns for thin metal plates is only five. In this paper, a double-layer antenna for broadband characteristics is designed in 39 GHz band as demonstration. A 20 20-element antenna is composed of 2 2 sub-arrays by installing a partially-corporate feed circuit in the bottom layer underneath radiating waveguides in the top layer. The five-element sub-arrays in both the feeding and radiating parts are designed first. A new structure for the last slot coupler with shortened termination is also proposed to avoid an extra slot-free region when assembling the neighbor sub-arrays. As the simulation results by HFSS, the maximum gain of 34.55 dBi with the antenna efficiency of 85.5% is estimated at 38.5 GHz. The test antenna is fabricated by the diffusion bonding of thin copper plates. As the measurement results, a very high aperture efficiency of 83.2% with the directivity of 34.5 dBi is realized at the center frequency of 38.75 GHz, where the antenna gain of 34.4 dBi with the high antenna efficiency of 81.4% is achieved. The bandwidth of 5.0% defined as 1 dB down from the maximum gain is achieved.

  • Timing Offset Interference Canceller in Multi-Link Transmission for OFDM-Based Cellular Radio Communications

    In next-generation mobile communications, it is important to improve the throughput of the cell edge as well as that of the whole cell. Multi-link transmission from two adjacent BSs has been studied for improving the throughput at the cell edge in OFDM-based cellular systems, which are major candidates for next-generation mobile communication systems. In multi-link transmission, an MS at a cell edge receives signals from both adjacent BSs by orthogonally multiplexing those signals in the frequency domain. Therefore, the cell-edge MS can utilize the frequency and power resources of both adjacent BSs, which improves the cell-edge throughput. However, when the received timing difference between the signals from both BSs exceeds the maximum permissible value, adjacent-channel interference is caused by the collapse of the orthogonality. In this paper, to resolve this issue, we propose a novel timing-offset interference canceller. To clarify the performance of the proposed canceller, this paper evaluates its performance with respect to the residual interference power and the BER by computer simulation.

    This paper proposes a new pattern matching architecture with multi-character processing for deep packet inspection. The proposed pattern matching architecture detects the start point of pattern matching from multi-character input using input text alignment. By eliminating duplicate hardware components using process element tree, hardware cost is greatly reduced in the proposed pattern matching architecture.

    Proportional fair scheduling attains a graceful trade-off between fairness among users and total system throughput. It is simple to implement in single carrier transmission systems, while changes to a prohibitively complex combinatorial problem for multi-carrier transmission systems. This letter addresses a couple of conditions that approximate multi-carrier proportional fair scheduling (MCPF) as carrier-by-carrier proportional fair scheduling (CCPF), which has much lower complexity than MCPF. Numerical results show that the proportional fairness metric of CCPF approaches to that of MCPF for those conditions.

    This letter proposes extended single parity check product codes and presents their empirical performances on a Gaussian channel by belief propagation (BP) decoding algorithm. The simulation results show that the codes can achieve close-to-capacity performance in high coding rate. The code of length 9603 and of rate 0.96 is only 0.77 dB away from the Shannon limit for a BER of 10-5.

  • Improvements of the One-to-Many Eigenvoice Conversion System

    We have developed a one-to-many eigenvoice conversion (EVC) system that allows us to convert a single source speaker's voice into an arbitrary target speaker's voice using an eigenvoice Gaussian mixture model (EV-GMM). This system is capable of effectively building a conversion model for an arbitrary target speaker by adapting the EV-GMM using only a small amount of speech data uttered by the target speaker in a text-independent manner. However, the conversion performance is still insufficient for the following reasons: 1) the excitation signal is not precisely modeled; 2) the oversmoothing of the converted spectrum causes muffled sounds in converted speech; and 3) the conversion model is affected by redundant acoustic variations among a lot of pre-stored target speakers used for building the EV-GMM. In order to address these problems, we apply the following promising techniques to one-to-many EVC: 1) mixed excitation; 2) a conversion algorithm considering global variance; and 3) adaptive training of the EV-GMM. The experimental results demonstrate that the conversion performance of one-to-many EVC is significantly improved by integrating all of these techniques into the one-to-many EVC system.

  • A Comparative Investigation of Several Frequency Modulation Profiles for Programmed Switching Controllers Targeted Conducted-Noise Reduction in DC-DC Converters

    This paper investigates the effect of several frequency modulation profiles on conducted-noise reduction in dc-dc converters with programmed switching controller. The converter is operated in variable frequency modulation regime. Twelve switching frequency modulation profiles have been studied. Some of the modulation data are prepared using MATLAB software, and others are generated online. Moreover, all the frequency profiles have been designed and implemented using FPGA and experimentally investigated. The experimental results show that the conducted-noise spreading depends on both the modulation sequence profile and the statistical characteristics of the sequence. A substantial part of the manufacturing cost of power converters for telecommunication applications involves designing filters to comply with the EMI limits. Considering this investigation significantly reduces the filter size.

  • HMM-Based Voice Conversion Using Quantized F0 Context

    We propose a segment-based voice conversion technique using hidden Markov model (HMM)-based speech synthesis with nonparallel training data. In the proposed technique, the phoneme information with durations and a quantized F0 contour are extracted from the input speech of a source speaker, and are transmitted to a synthesis part. In the synthesis part, the quantized F0 symbols are used as prosodic context. A phonetically and prosodically context-dependent label sequence is generated from the transmitted phoneme and the F0 symbols. Then, converted speech is generated from the label sequence with durations using the target speaker's pre-trained context-dependent HMMs. In the model training, the models of the source and target speakers can be trained separately, hence there is no need to prepare parallel speech data of the source and target speakers. Objective and subjective experimental results show that the segment-based voice conversion with phonetic and prosodic contexts works effectively even if the parallel speech data is not available.

  • Arc Erosion of Polarised Contacts Ag-W by High Current

    The paper presents the state of knowledge about thermal-erosion processes in contacts of low-voltage switching devices for power engineering on switching currents under short-circuit conditions. The graphical models of the short arc and the distribution of arc power introduced into contacts are shown. The method for measurements of a contact temperature during an electric discharge has been elaborated. The obtained test results are presented, i.e. changes of a contact temperature as a function of arc parameters such as current, energy, and integral ∫idt. The tests have shown that a "break point" exists on the curve expressing the relationship between a temperature rise and arc parameters in the range of high currents. The location of this point is dependent on a diameter of contacts and a value of current, and is associated with thermal energy delivered to electrodes. It has been observed that for each diameter of contacts there exists such value of an energetic quantity of arc (current, ∫idt, energy), at which diameters of arc roots are the same as a contact diameter. Above this value, the shape of a curve is changed. The obtained results explain and confirm the discontinuity of a curve expressing a contact arc erosion as a function of current, which was observed earlier by the other research workers.

  • Empirical Dispersion Formula of the Conductor-Backed Coplanar Waveguide with Via Holes

    An empirical dispersion formula is proposed and experimentally verified considering higher order modes of the conductor-backed coplanar waveguide with via holes. For this purpose, an effective dielectric constant is extracted up to 100 GHz from measured S-parameters. By fitting the extracted data, an empirical equation is extracted. The simulation of the Gaussian pulse transmission and the comparison results with the modeling data validate the reported expression.

    Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS) have been received considerable attention among the network security researchers as one of the most promising countermeasures to defend our crucial computer systems or networks against attackers on the Internet. Over the past few years, many machine learning techniques have been applied to IDSs so as to improve their performance and to construct them with low cost and effort. Especially, unsupervised anomaly detection techniques have a significant advantage in their capability to identify unforeseen attacks, i.e., 0-day attacks, and to build intrusion detection models without any labeled (i.e., pre-classified) training data in an automated manner. In this paper, we conduct a set of experiments to evaluate and analyze performance of the major unsupervised anomaly detection techniques using real traffic data which are obtained at our honeypots deployed inside and outside of the campus network of Kyoto University, and using various evaluation criteria, i.e., performance evaluation by similarity measurements and the size of training data, overall performance, detection ability for unknown attacks, and time complexity. Our experimental results give some practical and useful guidelines to IDS researchers and operators, so that they can acquire insight to apply these techniques to the area of intrusion detection, and devise more effective intrusion detection models.

  • Cooperative Coding Using Cyclic Delay Diversity for OFDM Systems

    This paper proposes cooperative coding using cyclic delay diversity (CDD) for OFDM systems. The cooperative diversity is combined with channel coding while CDD is applied to the cooperative transmission of the multiple relays to improve the beneficial effects of the cooperating relays. Analyses of frame error probability (FEP) and the average channel power of the proposed scheme are shown. Simulation results show the frame error rate (FER) of the proposed scheme. The proposed scheme provides not only a simple code design and low system complexity compared to conventional space-time processing, but better FER and diversity gain compared to direct transmission and conventional cooperative coding without CDD.
