  • A Filter of Concentric Shapes for Image Recognition and Its Implementation in a Modified DT-CNN

    This paper describes the implementation of a proposed image filter into a Discrete-Time Cellular Neural Network (DT-CNN). The three stages that compose the filter are described, showing that the resultant filter is capable of (1) erasing or detecting several concentric shapes simultaneously, (2) thresholding and (3) thinning of gray-scale images. Because the DT-CNN has to fill certain conditions for this filter to be implemented, it becomes a modified version of a DT-CNN. Those conditions are described and also experimental results are clearly shown.

    Solutions based on error-correcting codes for the blacklisting problem of a broadcast distribution system have been proposed by Kumar, Rajagopalan and Sahai. In this paper, detailed analysis of the solutions is presented. By choosing parameters properly in their constructions, we show that the performance is improved significantly.

    This paper introduces a switched-voltage delay cell with differential inputs. It can be used as a building block for a range of analogue functions such as voltage-to-frenquency converter, A/D converter, etc. Applications incorporating the delay cell are presented. The performances are verified by simulations on PSpice.

    A novel millimeter-wave slotted waveguide array antenna is developed for automotive radar systems. An antenna structure suitable for mass-production is proposed in this paper. The waveguide is composed of two parts; an upper plate and a bottom plate. It is not necessary to contact each other closely because they are divided at the center of the broad wall of the waveguide where the electric current is small. In addition, grating lobes are suppressed by using a cylindrical cavity around each slot and by controlling the slot arrangement without using dielectric material in the waveguide. We have fabricated the proposed antenna by metal injection molding. The measured antenna efficiency results in 55%, which is quite high in comparison with any other conventional low cost millimeter-wave antenna. This efficiency is almost the same as that of the antenna fabricated by precision metal machining. In this paper, it is confirmed that the proposed antenna could be manufactured with low cost.

  • A Distributed Agent Architecture for Intelligent Multi-Domain Spoken Dialogue Systems

    Multi-domain spoken dialogue systems with high degree of intelligence and domain extensibility have long been desired but difficult to achieve. When the user freely surfs among different topics during the dialogue, it will be very difficult for the system to control the switching of the topics and domains while keeping the dialogue consistent, and decide when and how to take the initiative. This paper presents a distributed agent architecture for multi-domain spoken dialogue systems with high domain extensibility and intelligence. Under this architecture, different spoken dialogue agents (SDA's) handling different domains can be developed independently, and then smoothly cooperate with one another to achieve the user's multiple goals, while a user interface agent (UIA) can access the correct spoken dialogue agent through a domain switching protocol, and carry over the dialogue state and history so as to keep the knowledge processed coherently across different domains.

    This work presents a novel description of texture mapping polygons in a geometric view about scanlines and a simplified mapping function to improve the performance. The conventional perspective-correct mapping requires costly division operations. In this work, two concepts in perspective geometry, cross-ratio and vanishing point, are exploited to simplify the mapping function. We substitute the point at infinity on scanline into the cross-ratio equation, then obtain a simple description of perspective mapping in polygons. Our mapping function allows the spatial mapping of a pixel from a scanline on a screen plane to a texture plane taking only one division, one multiplication and three additions. The proposed algorithm speeds up the mapping process without losing any correctness. Experimental results indicate that the performance of proposed method is superior to other correct mapping methods.

  • A New Crossover Operator and Its Application to Artificial Neural Networks Evolution

    The design of artificial neural networks (ANNs) through simulated evolution has been investigated for many years. The use of genetic algorithms (GAs) for such evolution suffers a prominent problem known as the permutation problem or the competing convention problem. This paper proposes a new crossover operator, which we call the selected node crossover (SNX), to overcome the permutation problem of GAs for evolving ANNs. A GA-based evolutionary system (GANet) using the SNX for evolving three layered feedforward ANNs architecture with weight learning is described. GANet uses one crossover and one mutation operators sequentially. If the first operator is successful then the second operator is not applied. GANet is less dependent on user-defined control parameters than the conventional evolutionary methods. GANet is applied to a variety of benchmarks including large (26 class) to small (2 class) classification problems. The results show that GANet can produce compact ANN architectures with small classification errors.

  • Time-Frequency Processing of Scattering Responses from a Dielectric Sphere

    Scattering responses from a dielectric sphere are analyzed in the time-frequency domain by using two types of wavelet transform in order to reveal the scattering mechanisms. In the resulting time-frequency displays, various scattering processes including reflection, refraction, and diffraction can be clearly resolved and identified. The delay time of each scattering process agrees well with that obtained by the ray theory. Furthermore, the natural frequencies that are not easy to extract by the conventional Fourier analysis can be extracted.

    Sector antennas provide many advantages such as when combined with a narrow beam antenna, they become particularly effective in achieving high-speed wireless communication systems and they aid in simplifying the structure. These antennas have a drawback in that as the number of sectors increases, the antenna size rapidly increases. Therefore, downsizing the sector antenna has become a major research topic. A promising candidate is utilizing a phased-array type antenna; however, this antenna requires a phase-shifter circuit for beam scanning and generally the feeding circuit for this type of antenna is very complicated. To address these issues, we propose a self-selecting feeding circuit that is controlled by the same control circuit and is operated similarly to the conventional single port n-th throw (SPNT) switch. We fabricated a small cylindrical 12-sector antenna at 19 GHz employing the proposed feeding circuit for verification purposes. Furthermore, this paper clarifies the design method of this feeding circuit where the antenna diameter is 71 mm, and the results clearly show that the gain is more than 12 dBi.

  • Effective Reference Probability Incorporating the Effect of Expiration Time in Web Cache

    Web caching has become an important problem when addressing the performance issues in Web applications. The expiration time of the Web data item is useful a piece of information for performance enhancement in Web caching. In this paper, we introduce the notion of the effective reference probability that incorporates the effect of expiration time for Web caching. For a formal approach, we propose the continuous independent reference model extending the existing independent reference model. Based on this model, we define formally the effective reference probability and derive it theoretically. By simply replacing the reference probability in the existing cache replacement algorithms with the effective reference probability, we can take the effect of expiration time into account. The results of performance experiments show that the replacement algorithms using the effective reference probability always outperform existing ones. In particular, when the cache fraction is 0.05 and data update is comparatively frequent (i.e., the update frequency is more than 1/10 of the reference frequency), the performance is enhanced by more than 30% in LRU-2 and 13% in Aggarwal's method. The results show that the effective reference probability significantly enhances the performance of Web caching when the expiration time is given.

    In this paper, we propose an ECG waveform compression technique based on the matching pursuit. The matching pursuit is an iterative non-orthogonal signal expansion technique. A signal is decomposed to atoms in a function dictionary. The constraint to the dictionary is only the over-completeness to signals. The function dictionary can be defined to be best match to the structure of the ECG waveform. In this paper, we introduce the multiscale analysis to the implementation of inner product computations between signals and atoms in the matching pursuit iteration. The computational cost can be reduced by utilization of the filter bank of the multiscale analysis. We show the waveform approximation capability of the matching pursuit with multiscale analysis. We show that a simple 4-tap integer filter bank is enough to the approximation and compression of ECG waveforms. In ECG waveform compression, we apply the error feed-back procedure to the matching pursuit iteration to reduce the norm of the approximation error. Finally, actual ECG waveform compression by the proposed method are demonstrated. The proposed method achieve the compression by the factor 10 to 30. The compression ratio given by the proposed method is higher than the orthogonal wavelet transform coding in the range of the reconstruction precision lower than 9% in PRD.

    New equivalent characterizations are derived for Schur stability property of real polynomials. They involve a single scalar parameter, which can be regarded as a freedom incorporated in the given polynomials so long as the stability is concerned. Possible applications of the expressions are suggested to the latest results for stability robustness analysis in parameter space. Further, an extension of the characterizations is made to the matrix case, yielding one-parameter expressions of Schur matrices.

    A lot of efforts have been made to develop the international Internet environment. In order to achieve a better and efficient information infrastructure around the globe, there are very strong urgent demands in the area of Asia and Pacific for a practical working environment where engineers and researchers in related fields work cooperatively. Our AI3 Project was started in 1995 by WIDE Project and JSAT. It has been operating a satellite based testbed network in Southeast Asia and conducting a series of research activities using the testbed. In this paper, we explain AI3 satellite Internet infrastructure and describe our efforts of the deployment in Asia using our developed technology. Furthermore, we evaluate our testbed network from the aspect of sustainable international collaboration.

    In the more general framework "shift invariant subspace," the paper obtains a different estimate of sampling in function subspace to our former work, by using the Frame Theory.     Certificate Revocation is a critical issue for a practical, public-key infrastructure. A new efficient revocation protocol using a one-way hash tree structure (instead of the classical list structure, which is known as a standard for revocation), was proposed and examined to reduce communication and computation costs. In this paper, we analysis a k-ary hash tree for certificate revocation and prove that k = 2 minimizes communication cost.

    This paper addresses a technique for multiplexing voice streams into an IP packet for efficient VoIP transportation. The principles and distinctive schemes are presented and a comparative performance evaluation of the schemes based on a prototype is provided. In this paper, a scheme using a dynamic packet length threshold is proposed. As a conclusion, we show the scheme is beneficial for shortening packetization delay compared with the scheme in which multiple coded blocks in one voice stream are carried by an IP packet and superior with respect to reducing the header overhead and the number of generated packets.

  • The GLI System: A Global System Managing Geographical Location Information of Mobile Entities

    We propose the Geographical Location Information (GLI) system that maps a mobile entity on the Internet to a geographical position. Users can look up the latest geographical location information of registered mobile entities (forward-lookup) and can also search for mobile entities within a specified area (reverse-lookup). The GLI system consists of home and area servers. The home server maintains latest geographical location information of the mobile entities and processes forward-lookup requests. The area server maintains the latest geographical location information of the mobile entities in the area that it manages and processes reverse-lookup requests. To provide a highly scalable system, home and area servers are managed in a distributed manner based on a hierarchical server structure and delegation of authority to servers that manage lower layers. To reduce the amount of traffic due to distributed management, the delegation information of authority is cached by the servers. In our performance evaluation of the GLI system, the prototype implementation can handle 4,500-8,000 requests/sec for location lookup and location registration. We found that 52 home servers and 33 area servers are enough to handle all cars in Japan under some assumed parameters through the performance evaluation.

    The Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) is a United States-Japan joint project to measure rainfall from space. The first spaceborne rain radar is aboard the TRMM satellite. Rain/no-rain discrimination for the TRMM provides useful information for on-line data processing, storage, and post-processing analysis. In this paper, rain/no-rain discrimination for the TRMM has been validated through simulation and theory for the no-rain condition and by comparison with the ground-based radar data for rain conditions.

    This paper explores how to extend the dependency pair technique for proving termination of higher-order rewrite systems. We show that the termination property of higher-order rewrite systems can be checked by the non-existence of an infinite R-chain, which is an extension of Arts' and Giesl's result for the first-order case. It is clarified that the subterm property of the quasi-ordering, used for proving termination automatically, is indispensable.
