  • Development of an Environmental ICAI System for English Conversation Learning

    This paper describes the development of an environmental ICAI system for English conversation learning, which is equipped with a simulation-based learning environment and an advisor function. Recently there have been various educational applications or tools for adult second language education, where the learning target is the acquisition of formal knowledge of a language. When considering the implementation of a practical CAI system, methods for developing communicative competence in learners are required. Although there are a number of ICAI systems for conversation learning, often the methodologies which they apply are not completely suitable for the acquisition of the required fundamental knowledge. Our system, based on the architecture of environmental CAI, enhances communication skill acquisition. The system has a learning environment with the following features: (1) A simulation of language activities, implemented in the role-playing game style, which helps to promote a learner's motivation. (2) Educational behavior of the system is varied through the modification of the learning environment and changes in the simulation progress and control commands. (3) An induction strategy, which can cause learners to fail to achieve a learning target, is executed by an advisor mechanism. The system is a prototype architecture for application in environmental ICAI systems for simulation based learning. We believe that the architecture of this system is an efficient framework for linguistic education.

  • An Interactive Learning Environment for an Intelligent Tutoring System

    This paper presents an experimental environment of an intelligent tutoring system called EXPITS. In this environment, users learn functions and the structure of the intelligent tutoring system and characteristics of knowledge processing. EXPITS provides facilities for investigating internal processes and internal states of the intelligent tutoring system. These facilities include visualization tools and controllers of internal processes. Because the internal states and behavior of ITS depend on student's understanding states, one cannot get total understanding of ITS without information about student's knowledge states. To solve this problem, we introduce a pseudo student which simulates a human student in order to visualize explicitly all information which affects ITS behavior. Target users of EXPITS are school teachers, who are users of intelligent tutoring systems, university students who are studying artificial intelligence and postgraduate students who are specially studying intelligent tutoring systems. We have designed EXPITS to achieve different learning objectives for these three kinds of users. The learning objective for school teachers is to understand the differnce between intelligent tutoring systems and traditional CAI systems. University students are expected to understand characteristics of knowledge processing and rule based systems. Lastly, EXPITS provides postgraduate students who are studying intelligent tutoring systems with a test bed for examining ability and efficiency of the system in different configurations by changing parameters and by replacing constituents of the system. To achieve these purposes, EXPITS has experimental facilities for the following four themes; relationship between the domain knowledge representation method and teaching activities, the selection method of teaching paradigms, relationship between problem solving processes and teaching activities, and student modeling.

    This paper describes the current situations and future directions of intelligent CAI researches/development in Japan. Then necessity of intelligence in CAIs/Educational systems are thought over corresponding to the model of teaching and the cognitive model of human learning like the situated learning, knowledge construction and so on. Originally, the main aims of ITSs/ICAIs are to tealize the high level environment of individual teaching/learning. So it is the most important to incorporate the intellectual function of teaching into the system. Whatever kinds of teaching purposes ITSs have, they have the quite complex structure which consists of the domain knowledge base (Expert system), student model, the tutoring knowledge base, the powerful human interface, and sophisticated inference engine with plural functions by artificial intelligence technology. In this paper, the technological and educational points of view are discussed, surveyed and summarized based on intelligent teaching functions of ITSs/ICAIs. Moreover, the meaning of new paradigm from ITSs to ILE are mentioned under the new technology of networking and multi-media.

  • Interactive Learning Environment for Dynamics: IPE

    The learning environment called IPE (Interactive Physical Environment) for Dynamics is developed on the computer. IPE can understand the simulated phenomena started from the arbitrary conditions set up by the learner. IPE has several scripts which describe the dynamical phenomena. The understanding of the simulated phenomena by IPE is obtained by matching these scripts with status list and phenomena list which are generated by the simulator using difference scheme. IPE gives the learner the explanation sentences which explain the features of simulated phenomena. This explanation strongly assist the learner in recognizing the details of result of the simulation.

    Electronics and automobiles were bound together by the introduction of emission regulations in the 1970's. The rapid progress of control technology and semiconductors that typify microcomputers has brought still closer relations between them. Without electronics, it would be impossible to realize features such as pursuit of comfort and environmental and safety measures which should be added to the automobile's fundamental features. In looking ahead to the future, the role of electronics in achieving electric automobiles and the ultimate goal of "automatic driving" is ever-increasing. Everyone knows that automobiles have become indispensable in our lives. In the future, the role of electronics will become increasingly important in order to evolve automobiles even further to allow harmonization with society.

  • Phoneme Power Control for Speech Synthesis

    This paper proposes a new method of phoneme power control for speech synthesis by rule. The innovation of this method lies in its use of the phoneme environment and the relationship between speech power and pitch frequency. First, the permissible threshold (PT) for power modification is measured by subjective experiments using power manipulated speech material. As a result, it is concluded that the PT of power modification is 4.1 dB. This experimental result is significant when discussing power control and gives a criterion for power control accuracy. Next, the relationship between speech power and pitch frequency is analyzed using a very large speech data base. The results show that the relationship between phoneme power and pitch frequency is affected by the kind of phoneme, the adjoining phonemes, rising or falling pitch, and initial or final position in the sentence. Finally, we propose that the phoneme power should be controlled by pitch frequency and phoneme environment. This proposal is implemented in a waveform concatenation type text-to-speech synthesizer. This new method yields an averaged root mean square error between real and estimated speech power of 2.17 dB. This value indicates that 94% of the estimated power values are within the permissible threshold of human perception.

    In the future, it will be necessary that robot technology or environmental technology has an auditory function of recognizing sound expect for speech. In this letter, we propose a recognition system for the species of birds receiving birdcalls, based on network technology. We show the first step of a recognition system for the species of birds, as an application of a recognition system for environmental sound.

  • A Signal Processing for Generalized Regression Analysis with Less Information Loss Based on the Observed Data with an Amplitude Limitation

    In this study, an expression of the regression relationship with less information loss is concretely derived in the form suitable to the existence of amplitude constraint of the observed data and the prediction of response probability distribution. The effectiveness of the proposed method is confirmed experimentally by applying it to the actual acoustic data.

    A superresolution technique is considered for use in antenna gain measurements. A modification of the MUSIC algorithm is employed to resolve incident signals separately in the time domain. The modification involves preprocessing the received data using a spatial scheme prior to applying the MUSIC algorithm. Interference rejection in the antenna measurements using the fast Fourier transform (FFT) based techniques have been realized by a recently developed vector network analyzer, and its availability has been reported in the literature. However, response resolution in the time domain of these conventional techniques is limited by the antenna bandwidth. The MUSIC algorithm has the advantage of being able to eliminate unwanted responses when performing antenna measurements in situations where the antenna band-width is too narrow to support FFT based techniques. In this paper, experimental results of antenna gain measurements in a multipath environment show the accuracy and resolving power of this technique.

  • Guidance of a Mobile Robot with Environmental Map Using Omnidirectional Image Sensor COPIS

    We have proposed a new omnidirectional image sensor COPIS (COnic Projection Image Sensor) for guiding navigation of a mobile robot. Its feature is passive sensing of the omnidirectional image of the environment in real-time (at the frame rate of a TV camera) using a conic mirror. COPIS is a suitable sensor for visual navigation in real world environment with moving objects. This paper describes a method for estimating the location and the motion of the robot by detecting the azimuth of each object in the omnidirectional image. In this method, the azimuth is matched with the given environmental map. The robot can always estimate its own location and motion precisely because COPIS observes a 360 degree view around the robot even if all edges are not extracted correctly from the omnidirectional image. We also present a method to avoid collision against unknown obstacles and estimate their locations by detecting their azimuth changes while the robot is moving in the environment. Using the COPIS system, we performed several experiments in the real world.

  • Performance Evaluation of Block SR-ARQ Scheme in High-Speed Communication Environments

    In high-speed packet networks, protocol processing overhead time becomes remarkable in determining the system performance. In this paper, we present a new Selective-Repeat ARQ scheme (called Block SR-ARQ sheme), in which a packet is transmitted or retransmitted in the same way as basic SR-ARQ scheme, but a single acknowledgement packet is used to acknowledge a block of packets. The maximum number of packets acknowledged by an acknowledgement packet is defined as block size. We analyze the system throughput and the average packet delay over the system, and the accuracy of approximately analyzed results is validated by simulation. Furthermore, we show that there exists an optimal block size which obtains both the maximum throughput and the minimum average packet delay.

  • Applying Attribute Grammars to Construct Fault-Tolerant Environments for Distributed Software Development

    When a group of developers are involved in the distributed development of some software product, they must communicate with one another frequently to exchange information about the product. To reduce the penalty of communication, the support environment should provide developers with their necessary information and update the information automatically while the product is modified by developers. Furthermore, the environment must meet the following requirements despite of workstation failures: whether a specific information is correct or not should always be decidable; as much information as possible should be updated correctly and efficiently. This paper presents a framework to construct such a fault-tolerant environment based on attribute grammars. In the framework, a product is represented by an attributed tree, which is partitioned into several subtrees {T1,,Tm}. Attribute values in each subtree Ti(1im) express the information about the product required by a developer. We introduce a set of redundant data and algorithms to meet the fault-tolerance requirements mentioned above. The correctness of an attribute value in Ti can then be decided in O(mn0log n) time, where n0n, and n is the number of attribute instances in Ti. All available attribute values can be updated with time complexity O(m2n1 log n) and communication complexity O(m2), where n1 is the number of attribute instances that must be reevaluated.

  • Computer-Aided Stepwise Service Creation for the Intelligent Network

    This paper describes a computer-aided service creation environment (CSCE) for the intelligent network which supports easier graphical specification description for service designers of various skill levels, and service logic program (SLP) generation. The CSCE design concept consists of stepwise service specification description and SLP generation, message sequence chart description language (LSDL: Layered Service Specification Description Language), computer-aided sophisticated interface (IEDs: Intelligent Editors), automatic specification verification and rapid service prototyping. Service specification is described by three steps and in LSDL or SDL, and SLPs are generated through three converters referring to two knowledge databases. Three tests are conducted on the specifications described. The effectiveness of the CSCE is demonstrated by the results that the amount of SLP descriptions for five new practical services using the CSCE is reduced to less than about 20% in LSDL description, compared to C language description.

  • An Integrated User-Friendly Specification Environment for LOTOS

    This paper presents unique specification environments for LOTOS, which is one of FDTs (Formal Description Techniques) developed in ISO. We first discuss the large gap in terms of syntax and semantics between informal specifications at the early stage of specification design and formal specifications based on FDT such as LOTOS. This large gap has been bridged by human intelligent works thus far. In order to bridge the large gap, we have designed user-friendly specification environments for FDTs. The outlines of SEGL (Specification Environment for G-LOTOS), CBP (Concept-Based Programming environment) and MBP (Model-Based Programming environment) are described. The effectiveness of software development under such an environment is demonstrated using application examples from OSI and non-OSI protocols.

  • A Petri Net Based Platform for Developing Communication Software Systems

    An integrated platform INTEGRAL has been developed for developing large complex communication software systems. At the heart of INTEGRAL, a pair of graphical and textual specification languages, DISCOL (DIStributed Communication-Oriented Language), has been developed based on Petri nets. Around DISCOL, a wide variety of design and analysis tools have been integrated in coherent manner so that a seamless support from design to verification and testing are made available along with software life-cycle. The platform has been applied to the development of a PBX simulator named UICPBX. In the development, some real communication services have been fully specified with DISCOL. Such experiences have revealed the effectiveness of the proposed techniques.

  • A Petri-Net-Based Programming Environment and Its Design Methodology for Cooperating Discrete Event Systems

    This paper describes MENDELS ZONE, a Petri-net-based concurrent programming environment, which is especially suitable for cooperating discrete event systems. MENDELS ZONE adopts MENDEL net, which is a type of high level (hierarchical colored) Petri net. One of the characteristics of the MENDEL nets is a process-oriented hierarchy like CCS, which is different from the subnet-oriented hierarchy in the Jensen's hierarchical colored Petri net. In a process-oriented hierarchy, a hierarchical unit is a process, which is more natural for cooperating and decentralized discrete event control systems. This paper also proposes a design methodology for MENDEL nets. Although many Petri net tools have been proposed, most tools support only drawing, simulation, and analysis of Petri nets; few tools support the design methodology for Petri nets. While Petri nets are good final design documents easy to understand, analyzable, and executable it is often difficult to write Petri nets directly in an earlier design phase when the system structure is obscure. A proposed design methodology makes a designer to construct MENDEL nets systematically using causality matrices and temporal logic. Furthemore, constructed MENDEL nets can be automatically compiled into a concurrent programming language and executed on a parallel computer.

  • An Estimation Method of Probability Distribution for a Specific Stochastic Signal Contaminated by an Additional Noise Based on the Arbitrarily Quantized Level Observation

    It often occurs in the acoustic environment that a specific signal is contaminated by the additional noise of non-Gaussian distribution type. In order to extract exactly the various statistical information of only specific signal from the observed noisy data, a stochastic signal processing by use of digital computer is essential. In this study, a stochastic method for estimating the probability function of the specific signal embedded in the additional noise is first theoretically proposed in a suitable form for the quantized level observation. Then, the effectiveness of the proposed method is experimentally confirmed by applying it to the observed data in the acoustic environment.

    A ner trial of statistical evaluation for a nonstationary traffic flow and its traffic noise is proposed as a prediction method of its probability distribution function by considering the temporal change of distribution parameters especially from a structural viewpoint. First, a headway distribution of the nonstationary traffic flow passing through within a road segment is proposed on the basis of an Erlang distribution by reflecting a temporal change of its distribution parameters. Then, an initial phase density concerning with asynchronous counting method and the probability of counting n cars over a long time interval are derived from the above nonstationary expression of headway distribution. Thus, the statistics of noise intensity at an observation point has been predicted by combining the above probabilistic factors and deterministic factors related to noise propagation environment with use of a compound stochastic process model. Finally, te effectivenss of the proposed theory has been confirmed experimentally by applying it to the actual traffic flow on a highway.
