    In cyber-physical systems (CPSs) that interact between physical and information components, there are many sensors that are connected through a communication network. In such cases, the reduction of communication costs is important. Event-triggered control that the control input is updated only when the measured value is widely changed is well known as one of the control methods of CPSs. In this paper, we propose a design method of output feedback controllers with decentralized event-triggering mechanisms, where the notion of uniformly ultimate boundedness is utilized as a control specification. Using this notion, we can guarantee that the state stays within a certain set containing the origin after a certain time, which depends on the initial state. As a result, the number of times that the event occurs can be decreased. First, the design problem is formulated. Next, this problem is reduced to a BMI (bilinear matrix inequality) optimization problem, which can be solved by solving multiple LMI (linear matrix inequality) optimization problems. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed method is presented by a numerical example.

    In this letter, we consider a global stabilization problem for a class of feedforward systems by an event-triggered control. This is an extended work of [10] in a way that there are uncertain feedforward nonlinearity and time-varying input delay in the system. First, we show that the considered system is globally asymptotically stabilized by a proposed event-triggered controller with a gain-scaling factor. Then, we also show that the interexecution times can be enlarged by adjusting a gain-scaling factor. A simulation example is given for illustration.

    We consider a regulation problem for an uncertain chain of integrators with an unknown time-varying delay in the input. To deal with uncertain parameters and unknown delay, we propose an adaptive event-triggered controller with a dynamic gain. We show that the system is globally regulated and interexecution times are lower bounded. Moreover, we show that these lower bounds can be enlarged by adjusting a control parameter. An example is given for clear illustration.

    In this paper, event-triggered control over a sensor network is studied as one of the control methods of cyber-physical systems. Event-triggered control is a method that communications occur only when the measured value is widely changed. In the proposed method, by solving an LMI (Linear Matrix Inequality) feasibility problem, an event-triggered output feedback controller such that the closed-loop system is asymptotically stable is derived. First, the problem formulation is given. Next, the control problem is reduced to an LMI feasibility problem. Finally, the proposed method is demonstrated by a numerical example.

    We consider an asymptotic stabilization problem for a chain of integrators by using an event-triggered controller. The times required between event-triggered executions and controller updates are uncertain, time-varying, and not necessarily small. We show that the considered system can be asymptotically stabilized by an event-triggered gain-scaling controller. Also, we show that the interexecution times are lower bounded and their lower bounds can be manipulated by a gain-scaling factor. Some future extensions are also discussed. An example is given for illustration.

    Event-triggered control is a method that the control input is updated only when a certain condition is satisfied (i.e., an event occurs). In this paper, event-triggered control over a sensor network is studied based on the notion of uniformly ultimate boundedness. Since sensors are located in a distributed way, we consider multiple event-triggering conditions. In uniformly ultimate boundedness, it is guaranteed that if the state reaches a certain set containing the origin, the state stays within this set. Using this notion, the occurrence of events in the neighborhood of the origin is inhibited. First, the simultaneous design problem of a controller and event-triggering conditions is formulated. Next, this problem is reduced to an LMI (linear matrix inequality) optimization problem. Finally, the proposed method is demonstrated by a numerical example.

    In this paper, we investigate a model-free design of decentralized event-triggered mechanism for networked control systems (NCSs). The approach aims at simultaneously tuning the optimal parameters for the controller and the event-triggered condition, such that a prescribed cost function can be minimized. To achieve this goal, we employ the Bayesian optimization (BO), which is known to be an automatic tuning framework for finding the optimal solution to the black-box optimization problem. Thanks to its efficient search strategy for the global optimum, the BO allows us to design the event-triggered mechanism with relatively a small number of experimental evaluations. This is particularly suited for NCSs where network resources such as the limited life-time of battery powered devices are limited. Some simulation examples illustrate the effectiveness of the approach.

    In this paper, we propose a distributed subgradient-based method over quantized and event-triggered communication networks for constrained convex optimization. In the proposed method, each agent sends the quantized state to the neighbor agents only at its trigger times through the dynamic encoding and decoding scheme. After the quantized and event-triggered information exchanges, each agent locally updates its state by a consensus-based subgradient algorithm. We show a sufficient condition for convergence under summability conditions of a diminishing step-size.

    A composite system consists of many subsystems, which have interconnections with other subsystems. For such a system, in general, we utilize decentralized control, where each subsystem is controlled by a local controller. On the other hand, event-triggered control is one of useful approaches to reduce the amount of communications between a controller and a plant. In the event-triggered control, an event triggering mechanism (ETM) monitors the information of the plant, and determines the time to transmit the data. In this paper, we propose a design of ETMs for the decentralized event-triggered control of nonlinear composite systems using an M-matrix. We consider the composite system where there is an ETM for each subsystem, and ETMs monitor local states of the corresponding subsystems. Each ETM is designed so that the composite system is stabilized. Moreover, we deal with the case of linear systems. Finally, we perform simulation to show that the proposed triggering rules are useful for decentralized control.

  • Consensus-Based Distributed Particle Swarm Optimization with Event-Triggered Communication

    This paper proposes a consensus-based distributed Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm with event-triggered communications for a non-convex and non-differentiable optimization problem. We consider a multi-agent system whose local communications among agents are represented by a fixed and connected graph. Each agent has multiple particles as estimated solutions of global optima and updates positions of particles by an average consensus dynamics on an auxiliary variable that accumulates the past information of the own objective function. In contrast to the existing time-triggered approach, the local communications are carried out only when the difference between the current auxiliary variable and the variable at the last communication exceeds a threshold. We show that the global best can be estimated in a distributed way by the proposed event-triggered PSO algorithm under a diminishing condition of the threshold for the trigger condition.

    Event-triggered control is a method that the control input is updated only when a certain triggering condition is satisfied. In networked control systems, quantization errors via A/D conversion should be considered. In this paper, a new method for quantized event-triggered control with switching triggering conditions is proposed. For a discrete-time linear system, we consider the problem of finding a state-feedback controller such that the closed-loop system is uniformly ultimately bounded in a certain ellipsoid. This problem is reduced to an LMI (Linear Matrix Inequality) optimization problem. The volume of the ellipsoid may be adjusted. The effectiveness of the proposed method is presented by a numerical example.

    Event-triggered control is a control method that the measured signal is sent to the controller only when a certain triggering condition on the measured signal is satisfied. In this paper, we propose a linear quadratic regulator (LQR) with decentralized triggering conditions. First, a suboptimal solution to the design problem of LQRs with decentralized triggering conditions is derived. A state-feedback gain can be obtained by solving a convex optimization problem with LMI (linear matrix inequality) constraints. Next, the relation between centralized and decentralized triggering conditions is discussed. It is shown that control performance of an LQR with decentralized event-triggering is better than that with centralized event-triggering. Finally, a numerical example is illustrated.

  • Event-Triggered and Self-Triggered Control for Networked Control Systems Using Online Optimization

    Event-triggered and self-triggered control methods are an important control strategy in networked control systems. Event-triggered control is a method that the measured signal is sent to the controller (i.e., the control input is recomputed) only when a certain condition is satisfied. Self-triggered control is a method that the control input and the (non-uniform) sampling interval are computed simultaneously. In this paper, we propose new methods of event-triggered control and self-triggered control from the viewpoint of online optimization (i.e., model predictive control). In self-triggered control, the control input and the sampling interval are obtained by solving a pair of a quadratic programming (QP) problem and a mixed integer linear programming (MILP) problem. In event-triggered control, whether the control input is updated or not is determined by solving two QP problems. The effectiveness of the proposed methods is presented by numerical examples.
